The Village of Alsip is located in the south-central part of Cook County in Worth Township, 19 miles southwest
of downtown Chicago. The Village covers nine square miles, and is accessible via two Cicero Avenue and two
127th Street exits from the Tri-State Tollway (I-294). Easy access to Interstates 57, 80, 94 and 294 makes Alsip's
location a major factor in the commercial, industrial and residential growth of the community.
Chicago O'Hare Airport is just a 40-minute drive from Alsip, and Chicago Midway Airport is 20 minutes away.
A heavy concentration of commuter and interstate rail networks serve the Village, and the Regional Transit
Authority's PACE bus system provides public transit within Alsip.
There is waterway and barge access via the Cal Sag Channel to the port of Chicago, Lake Michigan and the
Illinois River.
Both within and around Alsip, visitors have access to a wide range of cultural attractions, as well as many dining
and lodging options to accommodate the business traveler, vacationing family or sightseer.
In addition to the endless activities available throughout the city of Chicago, Alsip and its neighboring towns
offer cultural entertainment to suit every taste. Among the most popular venues are the Beverly Arts Center in
Chicago, the Oak Lawn Childrens Museum and the Southwest Symphony Orchestra.
There are lodging accommodations in abundance in Alsip, which cater to any guest, from business travelers to
vacationers, regardless of budget and choice of activities. Visitors can choose from budget motels or upscale
hotel and banquet facilities.
Serving to its multicultural makeup, Alsip has many dining options, from traditional fare and fast food, to ethnic
and upscale cuisine.
Visitors to Alsip can find plenty of things to do in and around the village.
Careful planning has given Alsip a solid sense of residential unity, combining traditional properties with newer
developments to ensure ample space for all. Housing is abundant, from rental units to town homes and condos
and many single-family residences, from modest to magnificent.
The quiet neighborhoods of tree-lined streets offer the best in family living. Carefully maintained homes,
townhomes and condos abound, seamlessly blend with newer neighborhoods.
Alsip has recognized the needs of the growing aging population. Two senior citizen apartment complexes owned
and operated by the Village of Alsip accommodate the special needs of these area residents. The 500 units
provide independent living in a safe and pleasant environment at reasonable rates for seniors 55 and over.
The Alsip Park District maintains over 200 acres of beautiful parkland. The District is a past recipient of the Gold
Medal Award for excellence in park management and for providing outstanding leisure services to the
community.
The District's facilities include playgrounds, sports fields, ice rinks, a fitness center, a skate park and an aquatic
park. A public golf course, public tennis courts and pleasant walking and bike paths are also under the care of the
Alsip Park District.
Howe's Landing, a municipally owned public boat launch facility for recreational vehicles on the Cal Sag
Channel provides opportunities for fishing and boating. Open from April through October, it provides months of
launch opportunities to area boaters. The launch has also hosted several amateur and pro fishing tournaments and
other water related events over the last few years.
Several neighborhood centers provide retail-shopping opportunities for Alsip residents and businesses. New retail
businesses have opened in Alsip over the last few years, and the Village continues to work to attract new retailers
to Alsip. Several land sites along major Alsip routes are being developed or redeveloped for retail use. The
Village is also home to the Midwest's largest indoor/outdoor flea market open every weekend year round. Alsip
residents also have easy access to Regional and Chicago, area malls, antique and specialty shops.
Alsip is served by a quality public education system that has a reputation for excellence. Four grade schools and
two junior high schools are located within the Village limits, and high school students attend one of the public
or private high schools, just outside of the Village.
Alsip offers a unique combination of formal education within a personalized environment. Curriculum and
technology are continuously upgraded to meet student needs. Students who function more successfully in a
nontraditional learning environment are encouraged to take advantage of various other programs.
Alsip is home to the IBEW/NECA Technical Institute for Electrical Workers, The Sprinkler Fitters &
Apprentices Local #28 and the Plasters Union Local #5. These apprentice schools attract students from all around
the Chicagoland area and prepare them to be the construction workforce of the future.
Several outstanding private and religious schools are also located nearby, and Moraine Valley Community
College serves Alsip's continuing education needs. The campuses of many of Illinois' top rated colleges
(including St. Xavier University, Prairie State College, Governors State University, The University of Illinois at
Chicago, the University of Chicago, DePaul University, Loyola University and Northwestern University) are all
within an easy commute.
The Alsip Merrionette Park Library District serves the area with an extensive collection of materials, publications
and an ongoing schedule of programs. The Library provides an extensive reference collection, and provides
computer and Internet access at the library.
Alsip has a diverse economic base of business and industry. Alsip is home to more than 850 companies, ranging
from family-owned businesses to national and international companies. Major employers in Alsip include Coca
Cola Co., Crown Cork & Seal, Landis-Berry Plastics, Madison Paper, Greif Containers, Anixter Inc., Griffith
Labs, SCA Tissue/North America, At Home America, Union Carbide and Prestone Products.
The Village has a long history of being a pro-business community. The city officials recognize the importance on
a strong business community. Alsip's location, area workforce, availability of water and other utilities, combined
with this pro business attitude have attracted a large commercial and industrial tax base. This base provides real
estate taxes for top notch educational, recreational and municipal services to Alsip residents and businesses. Both
enjoy lower tax rates than many of their neighbors in Worth Township and Cook County.
The Alsip Chamber of Commerce works with the Village of Alsip to promote, attract and retain commercial and
industrial development by providing community data, site information, development assistance and financing
information.
The Alsip Chamber of Commerce has over 40 years of service in creating and protecting a healthy business
environment in the Alsip area. With over 300 members, the Chamber speaks with a strong and credible voice for
business, industry and professionals. They maintain a healthy positive relationship with local government
officials.
The Alsip Industrial Association works to keep Alsip a viable location for industrial entities. Its main focus is the
industrial and manufacturing segments of the community, and it maintains a continual relationship with Alsip
officials on behalf of Association members.
These business organizations, in conjunction with the Mayor and Village Board, recognize the importance of
businesses to the Village of Alsip and the contribution they make to the real estate tax base and employment in
Alsip.
Alsip is governed by a body of dedicated civil servants entrusted to maintain quality living standards, uphold the
law and enrich the lives of Alsip's citizens. An elected Mayor and six Trustees form the government that
determines and legislates Village policy and maintains the community's administrative, operational and financial
needs. The Village of Alsip also has fulltime fire, police, water, building, health and public works departments.
Recent surveys show that Alsip residents and business owners feel safe in all parts of Alsip, day or night. Both
the Alsip Police Department and the Alsip Fire Department receive high praise from residents and business
owners for their performance in maintaining the safety and security of Alsip residents and business owners.

outpatient and inpatient surgery, emergency services, critical care, community education, wellness programs and
complete diagnostic services. Local providers of medical, dental and rehabilitation services serve the every day
needs of the business and residential community.
Several of Chicago's world-renowned hospitals (University of Chicago, Loyola, Children's Memorial Hospital
and Rush/ Presbyterian, St. Lukes) are within a short drive.
Churches of many faiths are located in Alsip, and religion plays an important role in the community. These
churches address the spiritual as well as social needs of their members and the community as a whole.
