DEVELOPING CHAMPIONS AROUND THE WORLD
When you own a Har-Tru court, you share a piece of
history. Har-Tru is made from natural, green stone formed
hundreds of millions of years ago in the Appalachian
Mountains. This stone is quarried in Charlottesville, Va. just
below historic Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson.
This uniquely hard and angular stone was first used for
Har-Tru in 1932 when a test court was built in Hagerstown,
Md. It was easy to build with, easy to maintain and fast
to dry and steadily became the surface of choice for avid
tennis players and aspiring champions. Har-Tru courts
have been a part of the US Open and the 2014 Davis Cup
by BNP Paribas First Round Tie, USA versus Great Britain.
With courts and products in 23 countries and
every state in the U.S., this uniquely American surface
is the training ground for the next wave of Grand Slam
champions. Har-Tru remains dedicated to developing
these champions through a variety of activities, including
partnerships with tournaments, leagues, training centers
and grassroots programs. Our consulting activities and
seminars assist club and resort operators, as well as
contractors, provide the ultimate court experience for
current and future players.

testing. We are thrilled to be able to share with you Tour Clay
Green from Wilson, a tennis ball designed for Har-Tru courts and
endorsed by us! This product is enhanced with Element Guard
Technology to prevent the balls from picking up moisture and
clay. This improves performance, while increasing ball life and
visibility. It’s a must for indoor Har-Tru courts and sub-surface
irrigated courts.

Our European Red is ideal for topdressing existing real clay
courts and covering red ClayTech courts. It has also been used
as a cap on top of existing Har-Tru courts to seal off the green
and leave the fiery red/orange finish on display. The product is
produced from crushed bricks and is imported in 55-lb bags.

Har-Tru nets are made of polyester, a stronger, crisper-looking
material that drapes extremely well compared with polypropylene,
which typically produces a stiffer-bodied, duller-looking net.

PACKAGING
We offer many packaging options for both the contractor and court owner. Most of our products come in 80-lb plastic bags, with the
option of getting that product in an Easy-Lift 50-lb plastic bag, as well. The 50-lb-bag option is intended for those of us not used to
handling bags all day. Some insurance company requirements in certain areas will dictate using a 50 lb bag. Both the 80-lb and the
50-lb bags can be palletized and stretch-wrapped for easy handling and additional weather protection.
For our contractors, we also stock and load Har-Tru or HydroBlend in bulk bags. These disposable bags are available in 2000 lbs, 2500
lbs and 2800 lbs and can be taken right from the truck to the court with a forklift.

Tow Model Gator Rake

The Har-Tru Gator Rake is one of the finest grooming and leveling
tools we have ever offered. The product is all aluminum and
stainless steel. The tine system is composed of stainless steel
rods less than 1/8 inch in diameter that put just the right bite into
your court surface, leaving a finely groomed, highly manicured
appearance. The Har-Tru Gator Rake can be towed behind a
cart or pulled by hand, depending on your needs. Weight can
be added to the top of the rake on special weight towers (must
be purchased separately) to increase the aggressiveness of the
tool and help it dig into hard-packed courts, regenerating loose
sliding material.

prior to patching and topdressing. It also works great as a
maintenance tool on small hard-pan areas and along fence lines.

Designed to agitate the court surface without removing or
damaging existing line tapes, it also helps prevent and break up
mineral deposits, mold, algae and fungus that tighten the court
surface. It scarifies the court with circular steel blades mounted on
free-turning axles. For best results on the court, add no more than

This smaller, hand-model Court Devil is designed for maintaining
areas along court perimeters and beneath the net line. It is also

This 48" wide heavy-duty tow model scarifier is truly a
workhorse for loosening the top surface on Har-Tru courts. It is
especially good for indoor courts and sunbaked Southern courts
that have excess calcium buildup. The unit is heavy enough to allow its two rows of case-hardened nails to really penetrate
the surface.

The lute/scarifier is two tools in one, made of all-aluminum for
scarifying, leveling and removing loose granules. It is strong
and sturdy, yet light enough to use all day and excellent for
spreading new material during topdressing. The concave shape
of the 30" wide blade allows the tool to “float” along the surface,
without grabbing or digging in.

The Knee Nailer was designed
to reduce the grind of hand
nailing. It is constructed of
highly durable 11-gauge steel,
stable wheels and a removable,
1" heavy-density foam pad to kneel on. The top of the unit is
3 3/8" off the ground. By placing one knee on the cushioned
surface, an individual can roll comfortably along the length of the
line without having to constantly get up and down. With 2000
nails in one court, this little accessory provides big relief.
Court TAPE Nailing system
TAPE STRETCHER
Easy to operate, this heavy-duty pneumatic coil-type nailing
machine reduces tennis court installation time by 70%. When
pushed along a preset boundary tape, nails are set every 6
inches along the tape edge, with the process repeated along
the other side of the tape. Its adjustable dual chassis allows the
nail gun to recoil and not affect the chassis alignment. Pivoting
rear axle compensates for uneven court surfaces. Automatic or
manual control. Requires air compressor with a minimum of 5 hp
and 8 cfm. 60 lbs.
The tape stretcher ratchet has a 2"-wide
slot to insert tape for quick and easy
installation of straight line tapes by one
person. The leather pad and support strap
allow the ratchet to pull the tape straight
and taut just above the surface so it can
be nailed securely. The tape stretcher will
improve the straightness of your tape and
decrease installation time. It is especially
helpful with old tapes.

This Designer tape is the best line tape
you can buy for your court, with its surespin feature and unique raised pattern,
specifically designed to allow consistent
ball spin and speed at any angle the ball
strikes the tape. It offers easy cleaning,
long life, and stability, and will not yellow
with age. The webbing is made from the
finest synthetics available, and has a pure
PVC coating. It is available with or without

Our 36' temporary lines come in red to
match the red ball used on 36' courts and
to show up sharply against the Har-Tru
green. The system comes in two pieces,
an outside rectangle and an inside I. The
pieces are attached with Velcro and secured to the court surface with just
twelve nails. Nails are included with the
lines. Lines are 1" wide.
These lines are identical to the 36' lines
except they are colored orange to match
the orange ball used in 60' tennis. Ten
nails (included) secure these to the court.
One Velcro intersection allows you to
install the lines without disconnecting the
center strap. All intersections are stitched
together. Lines are 1.5" wide.

The Tow Roller model is an easy-to-use alternative to the power
roller. It can be pulled by a golf cart, lawn tractor or utility vehicle
and still offers the same rolling speed and convenience as the
power roller. This unit can be upgraded to a motorized roller by
adding the power head of the CourtPac Pro as shown on page
11. It comes with a towing tongue, hitch pin, urethane blades, and

AUXILIARY WHEELS
ROLLER BRUSHES
Auxiliary wheels have been designed to ease roller movement
over difficult terrain. Leverage handles raise or lower the wheels,
lifting the roller off the ground to prevent damage. A heavy-duty
locking pin secures the wheels in position. The auxiliary wheels
will increase the life of your roller and make it much easier and
quieter to use when difficult transporting is required.
The complete brush assembly includes the brush, upright

The drag brush/lute combination has three
individual rows of 6" bristles. Two softer,
outer bristles move the finest particles of

how to choose windscreens

Windscreens are a functional and aesthetic addition to your tennis
courts. They provide a dark backdrop against which players can
see and react to ball movement better. They serve to break up
gusting winds and allow consistent, even air flow. Windscreens
minimize annoying distractions from nearby swimming pools,
parking lots, highways and players on adjacent courts. They give
courts a professional appearance and increase playing pleasure
by providing a consistent background and color.
With today’s various windscreen materials, the decision regarding
which one to use should be based primarily on cost and aesthetic
considerations rather than on wind reduction, because all
windscreens work well to break up gusting winds.
Another consideration is how dense a windscreen can be installed
without risking fence damage from strong winds. Nine-foot
windscreens are recommended for nearly all courts, and they
should include anti-billow tabs as well as 6" x 12" openings placed
5' to 10' apart. Six-foot windscreens generally do not look as
attractive as, nor reduce wind as well as, nine-foot windscreens.
They should only be used if the facilities are located near the
water with very strong winds, which would destroy fences with 9'
windscreens attached.
Our most highly recommended windscreen is the Mastershade
Plus. Made of knitted high-density polyethylene monofilament, it
has superior UV resistance and a special “heat-set” treatment that
allows the windscreen to lie flat and straight on the fence without
billowing. Mastershade Plus hems are 3-ply construction with
heavy-duty binding, and anti-billow tabs built into every nine-foot
piece. It is moderately priced, easy to install, very durable, and

looks good over time, making it perfect for nearly all applications.
However, if privacy is an issue, you may need a more opaque
windscreen to minimize visual distractions from public
thoroughfares. The Royale Screen, made of vinyl-coated
polyester, is an excellent choice and offers a high level of opacity.
For smaller budgets, the PVC offers high mildew and sun
resistance at an excellent price, while the polypropylene Air
Master I is an excellent choice for controlling wind while providing
consistent airflow. They both look great on the court and add to
your playing pleasure.
At the high end, the nine-foot-high Pro Screen offers a particularly
attractive and distinctive look with its five-foot-high vinyl center
(for maximum ball visibility) and two-foot-high PVC top and
bottom (for optimal airflow).

Har-Tru allows for the player to slide into
the shot, which dramatically reduces
the amount of injury and stress that can
occur in the lower part of the body on a
hard court. The court is also much cooler
during the hot summer months. From a
developmental standpoint, Har-Tru slows
the pace of the ball down as it bounces.
This forces longer rallies, which causes
the player to think through the point
more. The slowness of the game also
makes it more enjoyable for recreational
and senior players because they are able
to get to more balls and play longer into
the day.
Laser technology and its use with grading
equipment have helped modernize the
tennis court building industry. Courts
can now be graded accurately to within
one half of an inch, an 80% improvement
over previous tolerances. Additionally, it
takes only one eighth the time to build
a court. Because of these advances,
most larger and reputable tennis court
contractors either own laser-guided
grading equipment or subcontract the
laser grading out.
Typically, the base of a Har-Tru court
consists of a stable, well-graded, porous,
crushed stone material. There are guide
specifications available for prospective
builders. Some bases, such as cocina
and soft, water-soluble limestones, will
actually recalcify over time and become
impervious to water. These materials
should be avoided. Feel free to send in
potential base samples for us to approve.
Typical construction uses a two-layer
system. The top layer made of the
crushed stone screenings (1/4" to dust)
and a sub-base layer of larger, wellgraded stone (3/4" to dust).
Another option is to build your own
court with help from Har-Tru. Typically,
carpentry tools, a surveyor’s level or laser
level, screed rails and a straight edge,
rakes, shovels and lutes are the key tools
needed to construct your own court.
It isn't very complicated and just takes
some time and planning, and—of course—
hard work.

When Har-Tru Sports purchased the
rights to HydroCourt in 1990, the
first thing we did was standardize
construction materials and installation
methods. All HydroCourt systems
are installed by company-trained and
company-authorized contractors using
the latest technology—such as laser,
guided grading equipment—to ensure
level, consistent courts.
For more than 25 years, we’ve greatly
refined the HydroCourt sub-surface
irrigation system for Har-Tru courts. Our
concept provides a highly uniform playing
surface with little to no maintenance.
HydroCourt uses a two-layer system,
where the layers are separated by a
geotextile filter fabric. The layer below this
fabric is made of 3/4" or 1/2" clean drain
rock. The layer above acts as a “wicking”
layer and pulls moisture from the clean
stone reservoir below. This top layer is a
stone screening as well (1/4" to dust).
Water introduced underneath the court is
evenly dispersed across the playing surface
through 6 independently controlled cells,
resulting in highly uniform, consistent
playing conditions all day, every day.
It’s a proven system that works from
the deserts of California and the Middle
East to the frozen winters of Canada.
