Commercial Angus Seminar at Ohio Beef Expo
Commercial Angus Production and the Packing Industry Seminar to highlight Ohio Beef Expo
Sponsored and organized by the Ohio and American Angus Associations and JBS, this educational
seminar is one of many to be conducted in the sale rings at the Ohio Beef Expo on Friday, March 18.
In this session which should be of particular interest to commercial beef producers using Angus
bulls, the American Angus Association staff will discuss the basics of the Angus Source program for commercial cattlemen, including how to get involved, and the benefits to your bottom line. Following the
introduction and explanation of the Angus Source program, meat industry representative Chandler Keys of
JBS will discuss the impact of the Angus breed on the feedlot and packing segments of the industry. Chandler if the former Chief lobbyist and Vice President for government affairs for the National Cattlemen’s Beef
Association, and has been a career promoter and lobbyist of the beef industry. Chandler now has that same
position and role at meat industry leader JBS Swift Company.
This rare opportunity to visit with Chandler and American Angus Association staff in Ohio will be
held at 1:45 PM in the sale ring at the Voinovich Building during the Ohio Beef Expo. Just prior to the seminar, Angus enthusiasts can view the Angus sale cattle in a parade of entries, held at 11 a.m. in nearby Coper
Arena. Sale cattle will be on display in the O’Neill barn prior to and following the parade as well.
Strayer Angus and other farms/businesses will sponsor door prizes with Certified Angus Beef products / promotinoal items during the educatinal seminar, so be sure to arrive early and get yourself entered!

Secretary’s Corner
In this issue...
Fellow Angus Breeders:
I hope everyone is off of a great start in 2011 with a successful
start to the “spring” calving season! We always refer to them
as spring calves, but there is usually no spring in the air when
we are struggling to keep the ears and tails from freezing
and have to dig those January and February calves out of
snowbanks! It is times like those that I pat myself on the back
for switching to a primarily fall calving herd a few years back,
but we do get to enjoy a few remaining in the “spring herd,”
which naturally always come on the coldest, darkest nights!
Whatever your calving season, I hope it is a successful one
with few problems and great rewards as we enter into an
exciting time in the Angus business with cattle markets
continuing to climb and chase the much speedier corn and
grain markets! The strong price outlook is starting to have
a good effect on demand and price for seedstock across the
country as early bull sales are breaking records and demand
getting strong for bred females. Speaking of such, I hope you
all have the 2011 Ohio Beef expo on your calendar, specifically
the Angus Sale on Saturday, March 19, at noon. We have 31
superior Angus bulls ready to go home and work for you, and
a tremendous offering of show heifers and replacements. 2
high powered embryo lots will also be featured. And don’t
forget the educational seminar on the Angus Source program
and the packing industry which has details on the front page
of this issue.
If you are looking to obtain or sell Angus genetics this
spring or summer, please feel free to contact me to find a
sale for your cattle or to help locate your next herd bull or
replacement female. It’s not too early to think about what you
might consign to the Fall Ohio Angus Female Sale, building on
the success of the 2010 sale, which is reported in this issue.
Sincerely,

“Brent, I have never sold calves that young and heavy before. They did
excellent in the grow yard. They were receiving 8½ pounds of grain per
head per day and free choice hay of a lesser quality and still had a 2.47
pound ADG. They were a quiet set of calves to handle.”
– Mel Earich, Earich Cattle Company, Ohio
“Those calves out of the heifers we bred to ‘811’ have performed great.
The performance, muscling and overall eye appeal is most pleasing.
The ‘811’ calves have caught up and in some cases went around the
calves from our mature cows. We used him on some neighbors heifers
and our heifers again this past breeding season.”

“Bill and Brent, have been watching the ‘811’ calves this past year. I
used him on cows and the birthweights were most acceptable. Growth
has been very good as has the dispositions. Kind wise, he is siring the
type of cattle that ranchers need. The bulls are the thick, easy keeping
kind that should be easy to sell.”

AngusSource® Calves Earn More
Superior Livestock Auction data shows enrolling in AngusSource pays.
Enrolling Angus-sired cattle in AngusSource helps cattlemen capture added value from their herds —
that’s according to the latest data from Superior Livestock Auction video sales conducted between June and
September 2010.
According to Superior, age- and source-verified calves sold through AngusSource earned significantly higher prices in the auction market’s video sales compared with calves not age- and source-verified.
Calves enrolled in the American Angus Association®’s program, which documents source, group age
and Angus genetics, brought $0.91 more per hundredweight (cwt.) than other age- and source-verified programs; and $2.58 more per cwt. than non-verified calves.
“The latest data from Superior speaks to the increasing value of Angus genetics in the marketplace,
and the AngusSource program’s ability to capture that value,” Sara Snider, AngusSource director says. “The
number of lots of AngusSource calves marketed through Superior video auctions has increased in each year
of this study, which reflects our increasing enrollment numbers.”
In fiscal year 2010 the program grew in number of head enrolled by 14.3%.
“We’ve seen positive growth every year since establishing AngusSource as a USDA PVP in 2005, and
we look forward to steady increases in the future as producers prepare for marketing spring calves,” Snider
says.
Producers with cattle not meeting AngusSource genetic requirements can enroll calves in Gateway, a
second-tier program that verifies age and source.
And whether enrolled in AngusSource or Gateway, ranchers can take advantage of the program’s online listing service, which is available at www.angus.org/angussource and features stocker/feeder cattle and
replacement females enrolled in the programs. The list is distributed to more than 600 potential buyers each
week.
Visit www.angus.org to learn more about AngusSource, Gateway or the many other American Angus
Association programs designed to help commercial producers market Angus-sired calves.

January seems like a fitting month to talk about change. A new year, a fresh slate, new challenges, vast opportunities.
If you embrace that enthusiasm then you understand what we’re feeling in the Brand Assurance Division of Certified Angus
Beef LLC (CAB). We’ve undergone some reorganization, and one result is that our team is smaller by three. But that’s not
going to be a problem.

Industry News and Notes
New Beef Position to Focus on Animal Care, Food Safety and Profitability
A newly created position in Ohio State University Extension will address animal welfare, beef management and
production, and pre-harvest food safety for Ohioans.
"Animal care and food safety are key issues for Ohio farmers and consumers alike. This position will help promote practices recommended by the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board," said Keith Smith, associate vice president
for agricultural administration and director of OSU Extension.
The OSU Extension Beef Coordinator position will be based out of The Ohio State University South Centers in
Piketon, Ohio, and will be funded in partnership with the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) and the Ohio Beef Council
(OBC).
“This position is about sharing information across all industry sectors to add economic value to Ohio’s beef production,” said Elizabeth Harsh, executive director of OCA and OBC.
"We are grateful to the Ohio Cattlemen's Association and the Ohio Beef Council for partnering with us to create
this new position,” Smith said. “The economic realities of the day require creativity so we can continue to address the
needs of Ohioans."
The position helps Extension fulfill its mission, Smith said. "Part of Ohio State University Extension's mission is
to help Ohio businesses grow and be more profitable," Smith said. "This new effort strengthens our ability to provide
Ohio's $1.3 billion beef industry with the information its producers need to succeed."
John Grimes of Hillsboro will be filling the role of OSU Extension Beef Coordinator starting this month. "John
Grimes' experience with livestock and passion for education has prepared him to take on this important effort," Smith
said.
Grimes has been employed by OSU Extension for nearly 25 years as an Extension educator in Brown, Adams and
most recently Highland County. He received both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from The Ohio
State University, where he majored in animal science.
Grimes plans to focus programming on increasing consumer confidence and awareness regarding Ohio’s beef
industry. He will also emphasize adding economic value to Ohio’s beef production, adoption of on-farm management
practices and marketing techniques that will add value to the state’s feeder calf production, niche markets as a viable
marketing option, and efficient forage production and utilization systems. Grimes can be reached at 1864 Shyville Road,
Piketon, OH 45661; by office phone at 740-289-2071, extension 242; cell phone at 937-763-6000, or e-mail at: grimes.1@
