Expires June 30, 2012 CONGRATULATIONS TREY! Congratulations to CCL Assistant Golf Professional Trey Howell for finishing 2nd and qualifying for the Rex Hospital Open Nationwide Tour. Trey shot a 71 despite battling 20-30 mph winds! We wish you luck in May when you compete in the tournament! 4 G olf GREEN’S CORNER by Jeff Mack My staff and I would like to warmly welcome CCL’s new General Manager, Mr. Steve Salzman. We are very excited for the opportunity to work with him, and look forward to continuing the pursuit of excellence at CCL with him at the helm. This is typically the time of the year where Mother Nature provides the type of weather that the CCL Bent greens absolutely adore. Consistent “working” and “massaging” of the greens will continue to take place to provide the ultra-smooth surfaces that the membership expects and deserves. CCL is going to be working closely with representatives from Syngenta and their newly labeled product for nematode control on greens, Avid. Avid has been utilized for years in the turf industry as an effective insecticide/ miticide. In 2011, this product received a special needs permit in NC and SC to be utilized as a nematicide specifically on putting surfaces. Syngenta wants to better “nail down” the most effective treatment regimen(s), and will provide CCL with the product for the remainder of the season. CCL in turn will supply Syngenta with monthly results of the sampling that takes place to monitor the nematode population levels and the effects of the product. Irrigation was recently installed along the property line in the vicinity of the fairway bunker on #9 Marsh. Sod was installed and new straw beds were created around the drip-line of the existing trees to give this area a much better appearance while playing the hole and looking back up the fairway from the Landfall Clubhouse. The new landscape bed on #7 Ocean roadside looks great, and seems to be very well received by the CCL membership. Kudos to Rick Johnson and his team for the, as we say, “pretty work”. More landscape additions to the TIP OF THE MONTH by Greg Guman Stop Slicing Slicing the ball is a common problem for golfers. The path of the swing and the angle of the club face will determine the curvature of your golf shot. If you are slicing or fading the ball, the swing path is outside to in and the club face is open. The proper path is inside to out, as the club face releases over or closes. This correct method will give you a draw instead of a slice. No more slicing, good luck! CCL courses are slated to be introduced this summer. The CCL Board recently approved funding toward the addition of trees to the CCL courses. The Green Com- Target Line mittee and staff are finalizing a plan to where these 50-70 trees will be placed sporadically throughout the courses. Planting will take place during the fall and winter months. Will Epperson, Bart Bradshaw, and Allen Cole, who are all members of this department, will enthusiastically volunteer their services at this year’s Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield CC. This will be a wonderful experi- Ball Position ence as well as create opportunity to bring back new idea(s) to CCL that may potentially be incorporated into our program. Focus group meetings regarding the potential conversion of the Nicklaus greens to an Ultradwarf Bermuda took place on a frequent basis throughout the month of April. Representatives from CCL’s various golf groups and golf associations attended. Factual information was presented, followed by a question/answer session and a “lab” on the Ultradwarf Bermuda chipping green at the Dye. Everyone’s participation was sincerely appreciated. We would like to welcome Randy Cook, who recently joined our team and will be assisting Brian Brooks, CCL’s stellar Equipment Manager, in diligently maintaining our large fleet of equipment. Randy has approximately 25 years of top-notch experience in the field. His most recent position was at the prestigious Alotian Club, where he was the Equipment Manager for nearly 8 years. As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to stop me on the course, or make an appointment to see me in my office. JUNIOR GOLF Junior Skills Challenge - This summer’s big event for junior golf is right around the corner! The Carolinas Junior Skills Challenge is on Saturday, July 7 and will feature a Drive, Chip and Putt Contest. The event is broken into age divisions to make this event fun and competitive for all. More information and signup is now available on the club website! The CCL website is your place for junior golf information. Be sure to check out the junior golf page for tips, drills and other information about our program. Who knows, there may be a tip that could help out your game. 5 Inside path to ball Club face over at contact G olf COMING GOLF EVENTS MGA NEWS & EVENTS Men's Member/Member (N) teenth, sixteenth holes will count 1 best ball net, while holes two, five, eight, eleven, fourteen, seventeen will count Attention all new CCL Members– it’s time to sign up for fun, competitive golf every Wednesday by joining the MGA! We will miss his smiling face on Thursdays, but Justin Bush has stepped up to the plate and will be helping us from now on. Thanks for taking on the L9GA, Justin! The “Swing into Spring” cocktail party was a big hit. The club provided delicious hors d’oeuvres, thanks to the wonderful selections by Susan Lackman and Joann Bain. Another fun event was the first Couples’ Twilight held on Tuesday, April 17, which was followed by prizes and a delicious dinner. As an avid golfer and exercise enthusiast, Ed is no stranger to the gym or hard workouts. His initial goals of increasing flexibility, building strength and adding an additional 20 yards to his tee shot seemed reasonable. Seeking advice from a golf-specific fitness professional was a key move for Ed to reach his goals in a timely and safe manner. Ed and Michael have been working together as a team for over 7 years and continue to keep their routine interesting, safe and right on point for Ed’s changing needs. With the addition of balance, stability, and postural exercises, Ed has achieved his goals of increasing his “X” Factor, decreased low back pain and greater understanding of how the body works. Ed attributes his success to his commitment for his exercise routine, working out two times a week with Michael and at least another day on his own. With all of the challenges a warrior faces with increasing age, Ed is ready to raise the bar for everyone with his wonderful attitude towards exercise, country club living and life. Feel free to approach Michael with any questions about health and wellness. FEATURED GROUP EXERCISE CLASSES BOOT CAMP We've made a change to the Saturday class line up. Do you sometimes wake up with a headache, find yourself unable to look over your shoulder, or simply feel that your neck is “out of whack?” If so, therapeutic massage can work on multiple levels to help you relax, reduce pain and help regain movement in your neck and shoulder. Massage can be one of the most effective measures for relieving neck and shoulder pain. Massage kneads away tension and painful muscle spasms, gently encouraging relaxation and increasing circulation. Improved circulation can cleanse tissues of irritating waste products that contributing to pain. Oxygen and nutrients flow to tight or injured areas, helping to reduce discomfort and promote healing. Therapeutic massage can also powerfully support additional treatments for neck pain such as chiropractic, physical therapy or other medical care.
