Story By: Andrew Frinkle
Johnny loved apples. He could eat them a dozen ways every day!
First, he liked to eat them fresh. He would pick it from the
tree and eat it.
Second, he liked to eat them sliced. He would bite the white
part first and then the skin.
Third, he would dip them in peanut butter. They were nutty
and sweet.
Fourth, he would eat a caramel apple. There were nuts on
the sticky caramel.
Fifth, he would eat a candied apple. The cinnamon candy
coating was so nice.
Sixth, he would eat them as apple sauce. It was easy to use a
spoon with his apples.
Seventh, he would eat them baked in dumplings. The
cinnamon butter melted on top was savory!
Eighth, he would eat them in Dutch apple pie. The crunchy
and creamy toppings were delicious.
Ninth, he’d eat a peeled apple. The white part was cool and
crisp.
Tenth, he’d eat spiced apple jam on toast. It was perfect for
crunchy toast.
Eleventh, he’d have apple crisp. The oatmeal was hot and
tasty.
Twelfth and last, he would share one with a friend! They’d
take turns biting different sides.
So you see, Johnny really did love his apples. He’d find a new way or a new kind of apple
every day if he could. How do you like your apples?

A Day at the Amusement Park
Story By: Judie Eberhardt
Robert and his friend, Mike, were headed to
the amusement park for the day. It had been Mike’s birthday, and his mom promised him a day at the
amusement park with a friend. The boys were so
excited to try the whirl around ride. Then, it would
be the rollercoaster. Mike talked his mom into going
on the rollercoaster too, but she was so scared all
she did was scream! The Ferris wheel had always
been Robert’s favorite. He liked to be high up. He
especially liked it when the seat came to a stop at
the top and rocked back and forth.
The boys were hungry so Mike’s mom gave them tickets to get cotton candy, hotdogs, and some popcorn. While getting the food, Mike
saw a boy about his age standing at the whirl around ride. He just stood there and stared.
“That boy was standing at the whirl around ride when we were on it,” said Mike. “I wonder why he doesn’t go on the ride?” asked Robert. “Maybe he’s scared.” The boy was by himself and looked poor. His shirt and jeans were torn and dirty. Even his hair was messy. After the
boys finished their food, they walked over to Mike’s mom and told her about the boy. “Can we do something to help him?” asked Mike. “What do you want to do?” his mom asked. “Let’s give him the extra tickets we have, and we can give him a ticket for a hotdog.” Mike and Robert went over to the boy and said they had some extra tickets, and he could have them.
The boy gave them the biggest smile and said, “Thanks that would be great!” “We have some
extra food tickets too.” “Wow, I would really like a hotdog,” said the boy. He said his name
was Chris and that he comes to the amusement park often, but he doesn’t have the money to go on the rides. “I just watch everyone else and wish I could go on all the rides.” Mike’s mom came over and told the boys it was getting late. “This is Chris,” said Mike to his mom. “It’s nice
to meet you Chris.” “Well boys, we need to head home.” “It’s been a long day.” They said
goodbye to Chris and left. Mike’s mom told the boys what they did for Chris was very special.
“You both brightened a boy’s day that is less fortunate than you.” “I’m proud of you both.”

Baby Sister
Mark frowned. His sister was getting a lot of presents for her first
birthday. She had cake. She had lots of attention, too. Grandma and Grandpa
were here for the party. His Aunt and Uncle were here. Even some of his cousins
and some family friends were here. They were all gathered around the baby
taking pictures.
What about him? He used his fork to play with his piece of birthday cake. He finished his cake
and sat there. No one was looking at him. No one cared what he was doing. Fine! He thought. If no
one cares, then I can do what I want. He got up and poked a balloon with his fork. POP!
“Mark, stop that.” Mother said quickly.
POP! He did it again.
“MARK!” Mother shouted.
Grandpa looked at him. A look crossed his face, and Grandpa came over to take him by the
shoulder and lead him to the kitchen. “Sit down.” He ordered, pointing to a chair beside the kitchen
table.
Mark sat down and crossed his arms. He expected to get yelled at. Instead, Grandpa sat down
next to him.
“It’s a big responsibility having a baby sister.” Grandpa said.
“Not really. She cries, goes to the bathroom, and plays.”
Grandpa smiled. “That’s not what I mean. I mean it’s hard to share with your little sister when
you used to be the only one anyone ever cared about, right?”
Mark looked at him. Grandpa knew exactly what he was thinking! “I don’t see why she’s so
special. What about me? Why doesn’t anyone watch me anymore?”
“You had your time, Mark. There was no one to share with. You were lucky. Your sister has to
share your parents with you, so you have to share your parents with her. You’re also older, so you’ll
have to be a big boy and help your parents out.”
“I didn’t ask for a sister.” Mark complained.
“No, but you have one. I know you’ll be helpful. I know you can share, and if you can share, I
promise I’ll come by and take you fishing or do something just for you.” Grandpa smiled.
“Really?”
“Sure. Just because you have a sister doesn’t mean you’re not special anymore. We can have
some fun together, but right now we need to have fun with your sister. Deal?”
“Deal.” They shook hands to make the deal official. Then they went back to the party, and
there were no more balloons getting popped. Mark actually had some fun, too.

Bobby liked wearing hats. Hats made him feel

The Beautiful Butterfly
The butterfly is a flying insect with two wings and two antennae.
They have three main body parts: The head, thorax and abdomen.
Butterflies have a long proboscis, or tongue, that they use to drink
nectar from plants.
Butterflies come in many different colors and sizes. The world’s
smallest butterfly, The Blue Pygmy, has a wingspan the size of a nickel.
The world’s biggest butterfly, Queen Alexandra’s Birdwing, has a
wingspan of 12 inches!
When you see a butterfly, you must enjoy the moment. The
lifespan of most butterflies is only 20 to 40 days. Some butterflies only
live for three to four days.
A butterfly starts out as an egg and grows into a caterpillar. The
caterpillar then forms a hard shell called a chrysalis. Inside of the
chrysalis, the caterpillar turns into a butterfly.
You can find butterflies anywhere in the world, except for
Antarctica. Why do you think butterflies don’t live in Antarctica?

The Beautiful Moon

Have you ever dreamed of
going to the moon? In July 1969,
two American astronauts walked
on the moon. Their names were
Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.
If you visited the moon today,
you would still be able to see
their footprints! They also left
behind the American flag.
When the astronauts went to the moon, they needed to wear
spacesuits and helmets to protect them, because sometimes the
moon is very cold and at other times it is very hot. The helmets
helped them breathe because there is no air on the moon.
Did you know that if you weighed 70 pounds on Earth, you
would weigh only 11 ½ pounds on the moon? And if you went
for a walk on the moon, you would bounce with each step.
Some people say the moon is made out of Swiss cheese because
there are holes, called craters, on the moon. The craters were
caused by large rocks from space, called meteorites, hitting the
moon. Here is another interesting thing about the moon: Did
you know that the moon is like a mirror? It reflects the light of
the sun and sends it to Earth and makes the moon look bright
and beautiful! Don’t you agree we have a beautiful moon?

The Big Blue Thing
Dad brought home one big box. It looked like a boring old box.
Dad opened the box. There were three more boxes inside the first box!
The first box had a lot of white tubes. Dad lined those up. There were a
few kinds of tubes.
The second box had a big blue thing. Dad flattened it out. It looked like a circle.
The third box had pipes and a machine with a plug. Who knew what that was for?

I rode my bike
As fast as can be

The Bird’s Nest
Sherry found a bird nest in her backyard one day.
It was in the tree next to her house.
There were three white eggs in it. She wanted to
see them hatch. The mother bird kept the eggs
warm.
Sherry liked to watch the nest. She came home
from school very quickly to see the eggs. For
many days there was no change.
One day the eggs had hatched. There were three grey little birds in the nest. They
were not cute birds. They had almost no feathers. They cried for their mother.
Mother came back and fed them. She fed them often to make them big and
strong. One day the birds were finally pretty. They had nice feathers. They were
bigger and stronger. Now they wanted to fly.
Sherry watched them practice flying. They flapped their wings and cried. Their
mother tried to get them out of the nest. The birds were scared, but they had to
try.
The first one jumped out of the nest. He flapped his wings. He was flying! The
other two tried also. Now they were all flying. All three of them could fly with their
mother.
Sherry watched the four birds fly away. She was happy, but she was sad, too. She
was happy they could fly, but she was sad that they were leaving.
Maybe they would come back some day…

A Broken Leg
All the kids were getting ready to go outside for
recess. Miss Riley had talked about playground rules
with her class on the first day of school. “No jumping
off the swings,” said Miss Riley. “You could get hurt.”

After reviewing the playground rules, the class

said Miss Riley. “Robbie, why did you jump from the swing after we talked about this in class?”
Robbie did not answer. She told Jeff to go inside and get the school nurse. Miss Tanner came
out and said she called the ambulance to come get Robbie. After they took Robbie to the
hospital, it was time for the class to go back inside. Miss Riley had another talk with the class
about following directions and the rules for the playground. “What have you learned from
what happened today to Robbie?” asked Miss Riley. Lucy raised her hand and said, “We need
to listen to the rules and follow them so we don’t get hurt.” “Very good,” said Miss Riley. “If
Robbie would have listened to my directions and not jumped off the swing, he would not have
broken his leg.” “I hope you have all learned something from this.” “You can play outside and

Carson was going back to school after
Spring Break. He had heard that a new boy
would be starting at his school. Carson was
anxious to meet him and make a new friend.
That day at lunch, the new boy came and sat
across from Carson. Carson said hi and asked

business.” Carson was surprised that the boy
would be so mean. Carson ate his lunch in

me at lunch when I asked him his name,” said Carson.
The next day Carson’s mom went to the school and told the principal what had
happened. Jack was called to the office and admitted he tripped Carson. “Why?” asked Mrs.
Rogers the principal. Carson was only trying to be nice to you in the cafeteria yesterday when
he asked you your name.” “This is the third school I’ve been in since school started,” said Jack.
“I guess I was trying to be a tough guy so no one would mess with me.” “Well, did it ever cross
your mind that if you would just be yourself and be kind, the kids would be your friend?”
asked Mrs. Rogers. Jack said he was very sorry. Mrs. Rogers said that Jack needed to talk to
Carson and tell him he was sorry. Jack did apologize to Carson and his mom. Carson’s mom
invited Jack to the house for dinner. Carson told his mom that Jack is really nice but just had a
hard time fitting in. “I’m glad you have a new friend,” said Carson’s mom.

Busy Daddy
Katie wanted to play with her Dad, but he was always busy.
During the week, he worked long hours. When he came home, he showered and ate. If
she tried to play with him, he was usually too tired. He just wanted to watch TV, read a book,
or go to sleep.

On Saturdays he got up early and cut the grass. This usually took two hours. He pruned

By then, he was very hungry and tired. He ate and wanted to rest on the sofa and relax.

On Sundays, sometimes they went to church, if Dad got up early enough. It was his
second day to rest. They often ate a nice lunch together as a family. Then he would work on
the computer. Katie wasn’t sure what he did, but it required a lot of numbers. It didn’t look
fun, and it made Dad grumpy.
Sunday afternoons usually meant more sofa time and more football. It made Katie sad.
Dad was so busy and always so tired. She brought him coffee and smiled at him. He drank it
and when he finished, he sat up with a not-so-tired smile and turned the TV off. Then he asked
her, “What do you want to do, pumpkin?”
She said, knowing he’d like to do something that he really
wanted to do, “How about fishing?”
He looked at her, almost surprised, and nodded. A big
smile crossed his face. Now he didn’t look tired. “Fishing it is.”
Now she didn’t really love fishing all that much, but she
sure loved to see him smile, and she loved to spend time with
him, so fishing wasn’t bad. It was worth every moment.

Jennifer and her twin sister Katie
had heard in Sunday School how they
should care for others. This gave them
a great idea! “Let’s start a new club
at school called The CARE CLUB!”
Katie said. “CARE can stand for The
Caring and Respecting Everybody
Club.” Jennifer agreed it was a wonderful idea. Every night
they planned what they would do the next day to show others
they were loved.
One day they stuck up for a little boy on the playground
who was being picked on by other kids. Another day they
stayed after school to help a little girl learn to read. On the
weekend they walked a neighbor’s dog and even gave the dog a
good bath. Katie and Jennifer’s parents didn’t know what had
gotten into their girls. They loved helping others and they were
having so much fun doing it as well.
Before too long, the other kids at school were begging to
join the club. So Katie and Jennifer opened the club up to new
members. Everyone had to promise to show love to others.
They had weekly meetings where they planned who they would
help and how they would do it. Everyone pitched in some
money each week so they could buy flowers for sick people or a
card to cheer them up. Before long, EVERYONE had heard of
THE CARE CLUB and everyone wanted to join!

Carly was a beautiful canary that had a black cage with

sing a wonderful song. Jill knew when she heard Carly singing it

she be?” “She was in the cage when I went to sleep,” said Jill. Just then Jill’s mom saw that the cage door was unlocked. “Her cage was open and she must have flown out,” said her mom. “She has to be in the house somewhere.” They began looking all over the house, but no Carly.
“Jill, you need to get to school.” “We will look for her when you get home.” Jill left for school
but was not very happy. All day long Jill kept thinking where Carly might be. Did she fly out of
the house? Did she get scared and go hiding under the couch? Jill found it very hard to
concentrate on anything at school. All she thought about was Carly.
Jill rushed home. Mom was still at work. Jill looked all over the kitchen and then the
bedrooms. She checked under the tables. All of a sudden, Jill thought she heard a tweeting
sound. That sounds like Carly, she said to herself. Jill listened again very carefully and started
following the tweeting sound. It sounds like it’s coming from the garage Jill thought. Jill went
into the garage, and Carly was sitting up on a high shelf in the corner. She looked a bit scared.
“How did you get up there?” Jill asked Carly. Carly just kept tweeting to her. Her mom came
home, and they went into the garage to get Carly. Mom was able to get Carly to sit on her
finger and bring her back into the house and into her cage. “I bet when I thought I closed the door all the way, it was open just enough for Carly to get into the garage.” I guess I didn’t close her cage all the way either,” said Jill. Mom laughed and said, “At least she is okay, but I would set my alarm tonight if I were you.” Jill said, “I was thinking the same thing!”

Presents were great.

The brown owl sat on a branch and watched.
He was very good at watching. His big eyes blinked.
Down below, a white rabbit played in the grass.

black rabbit next to him. The white rabbit stared. He didn’t know there was a black

Without warning, the black rabbit disappeared, and in its place was the owl.
The rabbit cried out and tried to run for his hole, but the owl was waiting for him.
The rabbit ran right into the owl’s claws and became his dinner.

Cookie Cutters
Sun Yi was making cookies. She liked to make cookies
for holidays. Soon it would be Valentine’s Day. She wanted
to make Valentine’s cookies.
She went to the cabinet. She looked for her cookie
cutters. They could cut shapes in the dough. They would
make cute cookies. Cute cookies seem more delicious.
She found a bear. That was not good for Valentine’s
Day. She found a rabbit and a tree. Those were not good
either. What would she use?
She found a heart. That was good for Valentine’s Day. She would make heart
cookies. Everyone would like them.
She made some dough. She needed flour, butter, eggs, sugar, and salt. She mixed
them together. She rolled out the dough. She used a rolling pin. Then she cut the
shapes. She rolled the dough again and cut more shapes.
Then it was time for the oven. She put the cookies on a sheet. She put them in the
oven and baked them. While she was waiting, she made frosting.
For the frosting, she used butter, powdered sugar, and
food coloring. She made three colors of frosting. One was red,
one was white, and the last was pink.
When the cookies came out, they were hot. She had to
wait. When they were cool, she put on the frosting. She had
pink, white, and red hearts to give her friends and family. On
some she even wrote things in different colors.
Everyone loved Sun Yi’s Valentine’s Day cookies.

The Cowboy

David’s Mom and Dad were going away for the
summer. They were going to another country to help
sick children get well and teach them about Jesus. David
could not go, so he would stay with his Granny and
Pappy. Pappy lived on a ranch in the country. David
was very excited. He would miss his parents a lot, but he
was going to have fun learning to be a cowboy.
Mom and Dad took David shopping. They bought
him lots of new clothes and even bought him some cowboy boots and a cowboy hat.
But when he put them on, he did not feel like a cowboy. Mom said, “David, by the
end of the summer, you will feel like a cowboy.”
Soon Mom and Dad took David to his Pappy’s house. He promised to be
brave and to pray for them each day, as he kissed them goodbye. He felt sad when
he went to bed that night and he almost cried, but he didn’t.
The next morning, and every morning after that,
David got up with Pappy. It was still dark when they
went out to the barn to milk the cows. He learned how to
feed the chickens, the cows and the horses. Then he ate a
Cowboy Breakfast with eggs, bacon, biscuits and gravy.
After breakfast they had more work to do. He learned
how to put clean hay in the horse’s stalls for them to sleep
on, and how to gather the eggs that the chickens laid. He
helped Pappy move the cows to another pasture, and he
learned how to fix broken fences. Every day Pappy
taught David how to ride horses. At lunch and supper
David ate a lot because he had been working so hard. At
the end of the day David would be so tired that he fell
asleep before it got dark! On Saturdays Pappy took David fishing at the creek and
on Sundays they went to church, but every day there was work to do.
It wasn’t long until summer was over and Mom and Dad returned. They were
happy because they had helped other children in a far away land. David was happy
his Mom and Dad were home, and do you know what? His mom was right! He
really did feel like a cowboy!

Debbie smacked her lips as she chewed down on the last bit of her
strawberry frosting cupcake. Off in the distance, she heard someone calling
for her, so she went running.
“What is it?” She called out.
“It’s your turn to race!” Her friend Wendy told her. “Where have you
been and what is that on your face?”
“It’s frosting.” Debbie replied. She wiped her face on her sleeve and
ran across the grass to the starting line.
The other five racers grinned at her. She smiled back. She figured she
must still have frosting on her face somewhere.
“ON YOUR MARKS!” The official shouted, raising the starting gun. Everyone got down in their
starting poses low to the ground.
“SET!” All six runners lifted up off the ground.
“GO!” The gun cracked. All the runners took off from their starting blocks.
Debbie wasn’t sure what it was, but her first few steps put her out in front of the others. She
kept her lead the whole way to the finish line. When she crossed the finish line in first place, she
looked over at Wendy.
Wendy’s eyes were big and round. “Wow! Where did that come from?”
Debbie shook her head and laughed. “I’m not sure. Maybe it was cupcake power?”
Wendy frowned. “Cupcake power? Those things are not good for you. It should slow you
down.”
“I think they’re my lucky charm. I’m going to eat one before the next race, too.” Debbie
announced.
“Go ahead and try.”
Debbie and Wendy went off to buy another cupcake. In fact, she bought two. Debbie ate both.
“One made me fast. Two should make me super fast!”
“Aren’t you full?”
“I fell really full.” Debbie groaned as she walked to the starting line for her next race.
This time, when the race started, Debbie came off the starting block slow. She came in last
place. When she finished, she was holding her side, because she had a cramp.
“So much for cupcake power.” Wendy said sadly.
“I think they have the power to help, or the power to hurt.” She rubbed her side. She was done
with her races for the day.

Ethan loved eating chicken nuggets, pizza, fries, and
burgers. To drink, he always liked milk shakes, cola, or sugary

“No, I’m not!” Ethan denied it. He took another bite to prove he was fine. His teeth really
ached, though.
“See?” His mother sighed.
“Why do all the delicious things have to be bad for me? I can’t eat broccoli forever. I’m not a
rabbit.”
“I know, but you don’t get all the vitamins and minerals you need from the stuff you like to eat.
All that food is sugar and fat. You need good food for healthy teeth, eyes, and even your brain!” His
mother explained. “If you can’t start making healthy choices more often, I won’t buy any junk food or
sweets to keep in the house for snacks.”
“That’s not fair!” Ethan whined.
Whining didn’t work with mother. It made her more serious. “Snacks are supposed to be
occasional treats, not your regular meals. I should have bought more healthy breakfast foods for you.
Tomorrow you will have eggs, toast without jam, bacon, some fresh fruit, and a glass of milk.”
“That doesn’t sound too bad.”
“I’m not going to put all these sweets in your lunch anymore, either. You will get yogurt,
raisins, or fresh fruit for your dessert in your lunch, okay?”
Ethan didn’t want to agree, but his mom’s suggestion wasn’t really that bad. Maybe his teeth
wouldn’t hurt so much anymore, either. He really didn’t like trips to the dentist.

Chuck stared at his math homework. His teacher had written it on a piece of white

“Why does Mrs. Lee give us such hard homework?” Chuck whined. He thought this was
going to be really hard.
When Chuck got home, he showed his homework to his big sister,
Serena. She smiled. “That is so easy!”

Serena smiled and handed him a book. “Here you go.”
“What is this for?” Chuck asked. He was confused. He didn’t need a book. He
needed help on his homework.
“It’s a rectangle.” Serena answered. “There are regular shapes all over the
house. This will take you just a few minutes to do.”
“Wow.” She was right! He couldn’t believe it was that easy to find a
rectangle. Surely the other shapes would be harder, right?
He got a drink while he thought about it. Just then, he looked at the top of
his cup. It was a circle!
Chuck started looking harder. The cabinet door in the kitchen was a
square! He’d found three now. The triangle came next. He found that in the
folded flag hanging on the wall.
The last one took a while longer. Chuck walked everywhere through
the house, but couldn’t find it. At last, he walked outside and looked around the house instead
of just inside it.
Suddenly, he saw the last shape. There it was in the shape of the house!
He’d found the pentagon. As easy as walking through the rooms of his house,
he’d finished his homework.
The next day, his teacher gave him a new assignment. It said, “Find an

Mannerless Marty
Marty had no manners. He acted like a pig. He was rude, loud, and gross. Marty
was trouble, and he thought it was funny.
At the table, he burped after each bite. He wiped his mouth on
his sleeve. He sneezed on the tablecloth. He chewed with his mouth
open. He slurped his soup.
In school, he interrupted constantly. He took people’s stuff without asking, ruined
it, and then returned it. He tore pages in books and picked his teeth with them. He
made rude comments without apologizing.
On the bus he wiped his nose on the seats. He rubbed dirty
hands on his neighbors. He snored loudly, even if he wasn’t really
asleep. He took his shoes off and put them up on the next seat.
At home, he hogged the bathroom, but wouldn’t flush. He drank
out of the milk jug. He didn’t wipe his feet before he came in, so he left
mud everywhere. He tore out all the good parts of the newspaper.
Marty didn’t get invited to birthday parties. He had to clean up his room on
weekends instead of playing. No one wanted to sit near him on the bus. He made
people uncomfortable. He missed out on a lot of chances. Even his grandmother didn’t
want him to visit!
Mannerless Marty got tired of being alone. He decided to clean up his act.
Eventually, he made a few friends and a few good habits.

backpack on his desk and made a big mess.
“Line up for gym,” the teacher demanded. He went and sat down finally instead.
“Please be quiet,” the teacher begged. Ollie told him his life story, in extreme detail.
“Sit in your chair,” the teacher pleaded with him. He sat next to his chair. Then he sat
under his chair. After that he stood on his chair. He couldn’t quite tell what the opposite was.
The teacher looked like they might finally give up, but then he had an idea and said, “Be
loud, be rude, be lazy, and most of all, don’t follow rules.”
Ollie did the opposite of all that, and the teacher was happy.
The teacher had tricked him!
