Go with the flow
FIT (Fluid Interval Training) Circuit
Never look back unless you are planning to
go that way. Henry David Thoreau
Monday - Friday
Monday - Thursday
Sometimes I’m in charge of my schedule and
sometimes it just controls me. It would drive
a bean counter’s brain to sheer madness – and
there’s probably a few that it has.
But I’m blessed with an artist’s mind. I take flexibility in stride
and roll with the punches. When I stumble, and I know that I will,
I land on my feet (usually) and I watch for the lesson that I know
is attached. The rare times I have to just go with the flow, I notice
that not everyone does.
As the Serenity Prayer suggests, I change what I can and accept
what I can’t – and also know that it won’t be enough. I live in the
same imperfect world as you – I think it’s just all part of life.
When the ‘rain bomb’ on Halloween dumped 15 inches of rain
in four hours, I watched flood waters from the river outside my
front door rise faster than I’ve ever seen. Water that was pouring
down from uphill filled my yard four inches deep, long before the
river ultimately came in. If that rain had shifted slightly upstream,
the whole house (and maybe me) could have been taken away.
When I considered year end changes, this is not the changes that I
had in mind. Thank God, it could have been so much worse.
If anyone emailed me and got no response, please email me
again. A span of emails covering almost three weeks was ‘accidentally’ deleted by my server when they performed unannounced
maintenance that improved nothing again. Thank God no hardware crashed. Thank God I don’t have the million customers that
those poor repair guys could have.
Our Canyon Lake Community Profile for this month of change
is Charles Slater who is in the middle of transition as well. He
was President of the Canyon Lake Hawks Youth Football group
until medical treatment demanded most his time. Charles has been
through considerable hardship and always maintains a great smile;
I ‘use’ it to put my petty complaints in proper perspective. I, for
one, will be glad when this tumultuous year gets beyond us and
into the past. And I know I’m not alone on that. Have a great new
year! I am looking forward to it!

...when the giver receives
It was all new ... there was so much he
didn’t know. Was he up for it? “What if I
can’t?” he said, remembering the stress of
second thoughts. “All I could do was give it my best.” It was the
first day Charles Slater volunteered as Head Coach. Welcome to kid
sports, dads.
Youth sports organizations introduce students to different sports
in phases at different ages to help them develop basic skills. Parents
who get involved – and they need many to do so, also learn.
“I’d already coached soccer when Ethan was four or five years
old, but soccer was easy. I played high school football (Right
Guard) and I played well, but there’s so much about the game to
know,” Charles said. His initial insecurities were quickly overshadowed by what the kids needed; and a coaching clinic set up by
(former) Coach Monzingo helped! Two of his six years with the
Canyon Lake Hawks Youth Football (CLHYF ) program were as
President, while he was coaching as well.
CLHYF, the kids and his kids, the league’s needs, and the rules
and the games were almost all he talked about. I wondered if he
was born “there” with no life before or since, and, because his family was beside him the years he was there. In many ways, I was
right. It was their life; and it’s the years Charles made a difference.
Charles met his wife Jamie when both were playing community
softball. Sports is an interest they share. When sports are on TV, she
enjoys watching them too.
When the Slaters moved to Canyon Lake about ten years ago,
Charles’ mother was known locally for her community service
and her job at the Chamber as well, so at first, Charles was known
around town as “MJ Slater’s son.” When his son started school
soon after, he was known as “Ethan’s Dad.” Charles is proud of
both and accepts either designation.
Excited to be parents, Charles and Jamie chose a house a few
blocks away from Smithson Valley High and were soon regular
fans in the Smithson Valley stands cheering the football team to
win, even though their son, Ethan, was still an infant. Daughter
Emma completed the family five years later.
Charles was also our insurance columnist when he first opened
his Farmers Insurance office in Startzville.
As the world turns, although the Slaters have’t moved, they now
live about as far from the high school as they possibly could – since
the new Canyon Lake High opened on the other side of the lake. A
little disappointed initially, the location is irrelevant now; Charles
meant to highlight the irony of preplanning gone awry. “Of course,
we love Canyon Lake High and everything that goes with it – oh,
what we would have missed without it ...” as his hands spread, he
stops – at a lost for words to explain the depth of all they found
there. “We’re like family,” Charles continued.
It was just over two years ago, and a month before Christmas
that Charles and Jamie were sitting in a form of shock outside the
smoldering ruins after their house burned down. The staff of coaches and wives, already close friends, surprised them at their new
temporary home with a tree, lots of gifts, and a holiday meal.
“We made a great team,” he said. The staff of Assistant Coaches, the same set of dads, “were with me from Day One when we
started,” he said (a couple trickled in the next season) – the same
group of kids and parents and fans as they phased through the various sports that their age group allowed too. They bonded as family.
The team of kids and adults with historically zero wins – leaguewide – won the first game on record and won all the way to the
playoffs! They didn’t win the “Super Bowl” but they were winners
to make the playoffs and they started the winning trend of today.
Charles said that the title of President of the Canyon Lake Youth
Hawk Program meant you volunteered for everything: mowing,
meetings, fitting for and ordering uniforms, concessions, etc. The
board accomplished more. The field was a pasture with goal posts
back then. He secured funding and the slab for the equipment room
from the County and the coaches pitched in and assembled the
building. About 30 helped sod the field; there’s a scoreboard, and
the new board installed big stands. Importantly, his board separated
their league into a smaller association of teams their size.
Charles was nominated by Lisa Peters for Coach of The Year in
the myplate.com contest. He made it to the 2nd round in the statewide competition–hoping to snag the $25,000 prize for CLHYF&C.
Optimist President Glenn Erickson described Charles as a “shining example of someone who has experienced a major difficultyand
came back even stronger with a more positive attitude.” Back on
the practice field, coaching late in the last season in 100º temps, he
is returning to habits of giving back. He is proud the Hawk Youths
teams have continued their climbing successes.
There are times when givers must learn to receive; but it’s a
pairing that won’t last long. Relearning physical balance after his
surgery isn’t enough. Depending on others, graciously receiving,
expressing gratitude, and contributing too – all are part of finding
the right balance of the give and take of life. The key to happiness,
they say, is a shifting balance of all parts. The smile on his face
shows he is getting it right.
The coach staff Charles describes consisted of Mark Robinson, Bill Rowe, Jimmy Allen, Dennis Williams, Matt Hertzog and Mike
Crownover. The Canyon Lake Hawks Youth Football & Cheer Organization provides a positive environment to teach, play, and learn the
fundamentals of flag and tackle football and cheerleading in a competitive, yet non-select team format; they are committed to develop character, athleticism, sportsmanship and teamwork. They can be contacted at 855-429-5725 (855-HAWKS-CL) or at [email protected]. Email
Charles at [email protected]. (Congratulations to Coach Verette’s freshman team for completing a 7-0 season!)

By now you guys should be able to
tell whWell, here we go again. Why have
pest control in the fall and winter months?
We’ve enjoyed some cool weather and some
downright cold spells. Before that, we were
blessed with twelve inches of rain in some areas. Today, as I write,
it’s 80 degrees. Good ole South Central Texas, ya gotta love it! We
don’t know whether to break out a blanket or a beach towel.
I wanted to tell you guys that only bats, birds, and butterflies
fly south for the winter. Everything else – ants, roaches, spiders,
scorpions, centipedes, fleas and ticks – all stay put. Granted, some
of them don’t move too well in the winter (I can relate to that), but
they are still around. Rest assured, they like a warm spot as much
as you do. So therefore, you definitely need to continue your pest
control service. We always get calls through the holidays for attic
thingies like silverfish for example, because once a year we dig
out all the crappie Christmas decorations and such that we swore
to get rid of last year. You find something has been residing in the
boxes for quite some time. Somebody should invent holiday decorations that melt away into the atmosphere after 30 days. Of course
it would have to be bio-degradable.
Yes, I wanted to tell you guys that only bats, birds, and butterflies fly south for the winter but I cannot! Why oh why, you ask?
Ya’ll remember way back when I told you there is no normal to the
seasons anymore? Seems as though Mother Nature is slowly proving my prediction. Our beloved Mexican free tail bats have been
hesitant to migrate and some species of birds are hanging around
much longer than before.
I hope the climate change doesn’t affect my favorite migrators,
“The greater North American Snow Bird.” The price of fuel is
what concerns them the most.
Keep your pest control current. You never know what’s going
to migrate in or out!

Buying a home?
Get preapproved for a loan
by Kathy Martinez
Although you know how much you can afford, what will a bank say? You need to know
what the bank will let you borrow before you
even think about shopping for a house. You
don’t want to think you can afford a $350,000 house, start looking,
and then find out that you can only get a loan for $250,000.
Getting preapproved is pretty easy. It’s just a matter of calling a few lenders and giving them about 20 minutes worth of personal and financial information, then following up with supporting
documentation and waiting for a decision from an underwriter. To
streamline the process, gather the following data before you call.
Getting pre-approved for a mortgage.
In order to get pre-approved for a mortgage, you will need to
provide information for everyone who will be a borrower on the
loan (for example, both you and your spouse):
• Zip code: This tells the bank where you plan to purchase.
• Down payment: This is the amount you’re putting down. The
minimum percentage lenders require depends on the type of loan.
• Social Security number: The bank will use your SSN to do a
credit check during the application process; this can be done instantly while you’re on the phone.
• Income: Know your base annual or monthly income before
taxes if you work for someone else, after taxes if self-employed,
anticipated for the current year and actual for the previous year.
• Insurance: You should research and bring estimates for homeowner’s insurance. • Net worth: Add up how much money you have in all your accounts (one by one): retirement, savings, checking brokerage, etc.
The loan officer will let you know what purchase price you can
afford; this is commonly referred to as a pre-qualification. At the
pre-qualification stage, lenders will usually give you a preliminary
good faith estimate listing the loan amount you might qualify for,
interest rate you might qualify for and what your closing costs
might be. These numbers are all estimates.
The most important thing in choosing a lender is not choosing
the one that gives you the cheapest good faith estimate, but choosing the one that seems the most trustworthy, knowledgeable and
reliable.

I have quoted Brian Wansink, author of
“Mindless Eating,” in previous columns and was
reminded of him when I came across one of his
articles torn from an AARP Magazine. It talks
about eating smart and easy ways to eat better.
We remember as children being told to “clean
our plate, not to be wasteful” or “remember the
starving children in Africa.” That doesn’t serve
us well anymore; we need to rethink this and plan better.
Brian brings it home to us when he asked, “Have you ever eaten
dessert after a massive entrée, even though you were stuffed? Ever
helped yourself to the last bit of room-temperature casserole, just
because you didn’t want to throw it out or put in fridge? As a result, many of us eat too much salt, too much fat, and not enough
fruits and vegetables. He says the typical American diet is largely
responsible for rising rates of hypertension, heart disease and type 2
diabetes among 50-plus Americans. And the older we get, the more
important it is to eat well in order to stay healthier.
We think we are the master and commander of what goes in
our mouths, but we aren’t. External cues and our environment have
influenced us without our even realizing it. By changing our environment and some of our habits, we can trick ourselves into eating
better. Where do you keep your snacks? Brian found that “those
who kept the candy dishes on their desk ate more than twice as
many candies as those who had to walk six feet to access the candy.
Here are a few tricks to try.
1) Keep unhealthy snacks in small single-serving food storage
bags – you’ll eat up to 20% less!
2) Dedicate the middle shelf of the fridge to fruits and vegetables
– if already cut up and in small bags, they’ll be visible and handy.
3) Always have a filled fruit bowl on your counte; move the ice
cream to the freezer in the garage – it won’t be so convenient.
4) Use smaller plates – it looks like you have more food.
5) Here’s the tough one: Eat only in the kitchen or dining room,
where there is no TV.
6) Eat an afternoon snack only if you first eat fresh fruit first.
Brian recommends that people who want to eat better make three
small changes—and try to stick with those three for a month. We can do it! May you have good luck and good health in the
coming new year.

Puppies are cute. Puppies give us an urge to
nurture and love a creature that looks to us for
comfort. It’s very hard to resist the temptation to
cuddle and baby the puppy all day long. But we’re
not going to talk about cute puppies. Instead, I’d like to call your
attention to the fact that all living things must eventually grow.
The first six months of dog’s life are the most important ones.
Most people don’t realize this. There are a couple of priorities to
keep in mind when raising a puppy: socialization and discipline.
Because puppyhood is a short period of time in a dog’s life,
I have seen many dogs develop behavior problems as a result
of poor socialization in this stage. A puppy that is exposed to as
many different people (age, height, weight, race, odd clothing) in a
healthy and happy way is less likely to develop people aggression
than a dog that has not. Myths about dogs being racist are nothing
more than a lack of socialization to a particular race in the puppy
stage. And the phrase “If my dog doesn’t trust you, neither will I,”
is overused and more often than not, poor socialization.
A puppy should also get socialized to as many different types of
friendly animals as is convenient for you to arrange. If you want to
reduce the likelihood of your dog becoming a cat killer, socialize
your puppy to a friendly cat. By the way, just because you have
more than one dog, it doesn’t mean your puppy is getting socialized. Your puppy sees your dogs as members of the family.
Discipline is important mostly for the owners. Teaching the
puppy that “the world is his” will only create behavior problems
and confusion when you finally decide “he’s too big for that.” Limits need to be set to provide a clear picture for the puppy as to his
boundaries from now till adulthood. Picturing your pup as an adult
will help you decide: Which actions will be unacceptable? Which
actions are you willing to live with? This is a good blueprint as to
how you should raise your puppy.

Is it humane
to declaw my cat?
l o c a l ly
since
by Keith Leakey, DVM
Google “cat declawing” and you’ll soon see
that this can be a touchy subject. That’s because
there’s several horror stories out there of “declaws gone wrong.” Although considered elective, the procedure
can seem mandatory for many cat owners. Cats can destroy very
valuable furniture, carpeting, etc with their front claws and, in
some cases, it’s either declaw them or find them a new home.
Different procedures have been used over the last 30-40 years
in order to find a faster and easier alternative for both the vet and
the patient; some led to a decline in results. The method that’s considered the gold standard is called an onychectomy. In this method,
the entire last digit, including the bone that the nails are attached
to, is removed from the paw at the joint. This is much less painful
than some of the older methods that involved cutting the nail away
from the paw through the bone known as the “guillotine method.”
There’s also much less chance for complications – such as bone
infection and nail regrowth – using the onychetomy method.
The recent development of radiowave cautery and CO2 lasers
in veterinary medicine has made a huge improvement in declaw
surgeries by using the cautery and laser units instead of a scalpel
blade to excise the nail from the paw. This allows for cauterization
of nerves and vessels; because they’re cut, there’s less pain and
faster healing times. As a veterinarian who has performed several
declaws using a scalpel, radiowave cautery, and CO2 laser, I can
personally attest how much better my patients do using this new
technology compared to a scalpel blade. At least 90% of the time,
the patient is walking around, sticking their paws out of the cage
to play on either the same day of the surgery or the next day. All
of our patients are comfortable and not limping after their surgery
and can usually resume normal activities 10-14 days after surgery.
Now, when my clients ask me if I think declawing is an ethical
and humane procedure, my answer depends upon how the procedure is to be performed. If it’s done using older methods, I think
it’s questionable, but if these newer technologies are used with the
onychetomy method then I believe it is absolutely ethical and humane. If you are considering having your cat declawed, set up a
time with your veterinarian to discuss the pros and cons in your
specific circumstances.

Canyon Animal Clinic and Canyon City Animal Hospital, full
service primary care veterinary hospitals. Jeff Quinn, DVM, and
Stephanie Horstmann, DVM, complete the veterinarian staff. For

The glitz and glamour of Las Vegas will come
alive on Friday, January 17th, at the Tye Preston
Memorial Library for “Lake Vegas.” Everyone in the community
is invited to play Blackjack, Roulette, Slots, Texas Hold’em Poker,
Craps, and more! Standard Las Vegas casino rules apply at all the
Casino game tables. Some rules actually differ from one casino to
another, so we have selected the rules which statistically offer the
player a greater chance of winning.
Tickets for “Lake Vegas” are sold prior to the event for $30 per
person. Once again, you do not have to be a member of the Chamber to attend, everyone is invited. There will be a cash bar, food,
great prizes and plenty of fun. All proceeds will go to the Canyon
Lake Area Chamber to help our community.
Each guest, upon arrival, receives $20,000 in chips and a Vegas
style commemorative casino cup. The Casino is open at 5:30pm on
January 17 for two to three hours. At the end of the evening, guests
are given an opportunity to cash in their Casino winnings for raffle
tickets. You will get one raffle ticket for each 5,000 in winnings
and the opportunity to purchase additional tickets for the raffle.
Prizes this year will be a 40” Flat Screen TV, a Sound Bar with
wireless receiving and an iDea7 tablet with voice control/conversation technology pre-installed!
All the dealers are accustomed to dealing with both experienced
and inexperienced players and are eager to teach the games to everyone. What better way to learn to play these games than in an
un-intimidating environment in which you have nothing to lose?
Tickets are now on sale at the Canyon Lake Area Chamber of
Commerce at 3934 FM 2673. With all of the great prizes and food,
this event promises to be lots of fun. Come by or call now.

Knowing what’s important
by Mark Hannah
As we look to the New Year, let’s remember
the important things in life that can’t be purchased. Too often we focus on trying to buy
great memories for our loved ones.
Make a promise to make great memories
next year. Instead of getting wrapped up trying to make everything perfect for family gatherings – that can’t
be perfect if you wear yourself down – and work on making those
get-togethers memorable instead.
As I grow older, I realize the importance of spending quality
time with those I love, both people and pets. Sometimes spending
time with loved ones is overlooked until it’s too late. As a handyman, I write something every month which I hope
serves as a reminder to you to not to let little things become big
issues. Keep on top of your home repairs while they are small so
they don’t have a chance to grow and weigh on you – or your
loved one. Remember some things that seem insignificant to you
can bother them a lot.
The internet has made it easier than ever to look up how to complete simple repairs yourself and some are really fun for couples
or families to tackle together. Some happy couples have learned
to never tackle a project together again and spend time together in
other ways; they joke that a call to their trusty handyman saved the
marriage more than once. Getting a stale ‘honey do’ off a pester list
can be a great treat for both when the task is finally changed from
‘Honey, please...’ to a ‘Honey, it’s done!” … aaahhh…
When you don’t have the time or don’t see it as fun to try and
tackle yourself, it’s better to call a handyman to get it done and
check it off your list. As you pause to make your resolutions this
year, I hope you take stock in who and what you love and focus on
it – don’t let the little things be a big issue.
Have a great new year!

What Goes Around Comes Around
The hard facts about
water softeners
mostly new
by Randy Lawrence
For decades, many have tried to come up
with a method of treating hard water without
the use of salt. These alternatives have included the use of electricity, magnetic fields, and catalytic “stabilizer” units. The latest “salt free” technology is Template Assisted
Crystallization, which uses a specially designed media to join calcium ions into an organized crystal structure which won’t stick to
downstream surfaces. In some parts of the country, these alternative technologies have met with some success. This is mostly due
to lower levels of calcium in the water to begin with.
Most wells in central Texas have hardness levels that fall into
the “extremely hard” category, exceeding 14 grains per gallon as
described by the Water Quality Association. It is common in our
area to see well water that exceeds 100 grains. Typically, these alternative technologies are not designed for extreme hardness. The
information regarding the maximum starting hardness appears to
vary wildly depending on whose information you are viewing.
Claims that the alternative technologies will soften your water are
untrue.
The only way to “soften” water is to physically remove the
hard minerals (calcium, magnesium, iron), and replace them with
a softer mineral such as sodium or potassium. Traditional salt
based water conditioning is the only method which accomplishes
this task. All other methods are attempting to change the characteristics of the water in an effort to reduce scaling downstream.
The Texas Water Code states that individuals who work with
water treatment equipment, or who analyze water in order to recommend treatment, must hold a valid Water Treatment Specialist
license issued by the TCEQ. There’s a public database containing
information about all licensed individuals available at www.tceq.
state.tx.us.
The person you choose to do business with should be able to
explain the differences in treatment methods in terms you can easily understand. Be wary of “one size fits all” claims. The best thing
you can do as a consumer is to be vigilant in your search for the
right equipment to solve your particular water problems. It’s wise
to check references and best to be careful about who you trust to
handle the most important thing in your home – your water.

The good news
by Dr. Franklin D. Watts
What exactly is the Christian community celebrating at Christmastime? Is it the advent of a
great and wise teacher or a supreme role model
for human behavior? A social revolutionary, a community organizer? All of the above and much more! According to the original
Christian message, Christmas is the celebration of the unique incarnation, the “infleshment” of the high and nightly Lord of the
Universe in the flesh and bone and muscle and sinew of a particular man known as Jesus of Nazareth.
This radical assertion cuts across the grain of many philosophies: gnosticism, Kantian dualism, Enlightenment rationalism,
post-modern relativism and many more. If it is not true, then it is
a vicious fraud and Christian churches should be closed and padlocked. But if it is true, that Jesus Christ is God, then it is the best
news that fallen, broken humanity could ever receive. Jesus is the
ultimate Christmas gift!
The trilema in relation to Jesus’ repeated claims to deity is: liar,
lunatic or Lord. I have found no compelling reason to believe He
was a liar or a lunatic and there are sufficient marks of transcendence associated with Him as to make a warranted case for His
deity.
He is the divine, loving Lord who came to our world that He
might take us to His world. He made the way by means of His
vicarious redemptive death and by His factually-attested empirical
resurrection. Thus His kingship has been purchased with blood and
His kingdom on earth will surely come.
The good news is that we can be citizens of that kingdom now
by receiving and embracing Him as Divine Lord and Sin-Bearer.
We welcome you, believer and non-believer alike, to
experience Him with us!? To begin your new year,
join us for our Sermon Series on Sundays. Learn about
God’s answers to vital issues facing the
Christian belief in today’s world.

Fun Fish set for February 23
Since 1941®
Fun Fish, WORD’s 18th annual FREE kids fishing event for
all kids ages 3-16 is scheduled for Sunday, February 23, at Camp
Huaco Springs on River Road. Timed to coincide with Texas Park
& Wildlife’s trout stocking does improve the odds for success.
Loaner poles, and there are many, used to be provided for all the
kids but are now loaned on a first come first served basis while they
last; attendees now outnumber the poles, a side effect that signals
the event’s popularity and explosive growth. Turnover may free up
some but, if you can, bringing your own is far better. Read more

CASA of Central Texas advocates for abused and neglected
children in the court system by recruiting, training and supporting
community volunteers from all walks of life in all shapes and sizes. More advocates are needed. There are still children who have
no one while the Court removes them from their home, and every
child deserves a voice – a CASA. Short training sessions are held
throughout the year; support systems are available while assigned.

An ‘I Remember When’ Story
by Bobby Beddoe, M.S.
Every seat was taken in the small meeting
room as The Heritage Museum of the Texas Hill
Country members got together, as they do every
now and then, to discuss numerous topics of concern and interest.
This never fails to be interesting as regular attendees get accustomed to various topics up for discussion. For example, once everybody settled around the conference room table, someone asked,
“Anybody have an ‘I remember when’ story to tell?”
A fellow we all know, Mr. Charles Meckel, getting the attention of everyone, got things started right off the bat: “I remember
when…”, and commenced to tell about growing up in the 1940s
and early ‘50s, where the Canyon Lake Dam now exists on the
Guadalupe River.
Nobody said a word; they just listened soundlessly because right
away, it was quite clear that Charles was the real article, born right
there in the exact same spot that the dam spillway now occupies.
For several years, six days a week, Charles, in addition to an assortment of construction equipment, mostly operated a dragline laying rock for the dam. The first large rock removed at the start of
construction, he saved – and said he plans to donate the rock to the
museum – that is , if he can find it.
In a very short space of time, the panoramic view where
Charles grew up has changed. The old cotton fields that his parents farmed, year after-year are just a memory now, recalling that
as a kid he picked cotton. Well, at least he gave it his best shot.
Anyway, Charles still lives in the neighborhood – he has no plans
to stay away from his old stomping ground anytime soon.
So on account of a word-space limit here, I’ll close with this
little annotation: The Heritage Museum has, on display, original
photos showing the sequence of construction stage of the dam
along with a few artifacts, e.g., the first gallon of water, a core
sample, drill bit, and three thick volumes of Canyon Lake documents including maps and articles of the construction.
Speaking of thick volumes, it has occurred to me, and perhaps
also to some of our members, that after listening to Charles Meckel, he no doubt could pen his own thick volume on the building of
The Canyon Lake Dam.
Bobby Beddoe is a retired school teacher and longtime Canyon
Lake resident, a 7th Generation Texan, and a docent at the Heritage Museum that offers much more than dinosaur tracks. He is a
lifelong Collector of Native/Indigenous Artifacts, a skilled Arrowhead Collector and donor of the extensive Native Artifacts Collection that now resides at the museum. For more information, call

Here are a few do-it-yourself calibration tips that will make
your monitor’s colors better and will make looking at your
computer screen more comfortable.
Both Windows and OS X have built-in monitor calibration
tools. Before you start, find the settings button on your monitor
(one of the physical buttons along the front or bottom of
the display). Use the menu to restore the settings to factory
defaults. In Windows, go to the Control Panel and search
“Calibrate Display.” This will bring up the Color Management
tool (in XP, select the Color Management icon). Click “Change

resolution of your monitor. In Windows, go to Start>>Control
Panel>>Adjust resolution. Move the resolution slider up
and hit Apply. The ideal resolution for most monitors is the
highest setting available. Adjust the slider for a look that
is better for your eyes. For the Mac, go to Apple>>System
Preferences>>Displays. Select a new resolution to see how
it looks.
Now that your resolution is correct, let’s change the
text size. In Windows, go to Control Panel>>Appearance
and Personalization>>Personalization>>Adjust Font Size.
For Macs, go to Apple>>System Preferences>>Universal
Preferences>>Seeing.
A more comfortable font size will reduce eyestrain.
However, if you have to increase the text size a lot, it might
be a problem with the way your monitor is physically placed
(or consider a larger monitor).
To reduce eyestrain, your monitor should be about an
arm’s length away from you. Adjust the monitor so that the
top of the screen is at or just below your eye level. Make sure
you position the monitor away from any glare that could be
reflecting off of it.
The ideal position for your monitor is directly in front of
you. You want to be able to see any part of your screen without
moving your head or neck too much.

Reverse 911 Emergency Notification
There is a tri-county system now in place to alert you of local emergency situations and possibly vital
information by sending a message to any “standard voice or text communication device” (phone, cell,
email, etc) that you register.“In the event there is a man-made or natural disaster in the area, local officials
have the ability to send emergency messages [through a] ‘Reverse 911’ emergency call-out system. It's a
quick and easy process that takes only minutes to complete.
To begin receiving alerts, you must register by going to http://www.co.comal.tx.us/Tri_County_Reverse_911.htm and click on the link that says ‘Register Here with the Regional Emergency Notification
Service.’ Don't forget to log in to your email used during the registration process to activate your account.”*
There’s a live link for sign up at WORDcc.com that’s much easier than typing all that. While you’re on
WORD’s site, check out the alternate routes into the area that avoid holiday traffic that may serve you in
reverse, if an evacuation notice were issued for emergency reasons.

Getting into hot water...
by Steve Sherman
Here in Central Texas, we expect the extended
periods of low temps – if any – in February. This
year, the weather got colder, sooner, and for longer than we generally have, so our D-I-Y customers began asking winter questions earlier too. Most have two issues: lack of hot water and fixing leaking or broken pipes. Here are
some common cold weather questions and concerns.
I’m not getting enough hot water from my water heater. The
thermostat may be set too low; otherwise an element is probably
not heating correctly and should be replaced.
Water is leaking from my water heater. What’s the cause? The
pressure relief valve could be leaking. Try operating the valve to
see if it will stop. It also might need tightening. A gasket around
the heating element may need to be replaced, or the tank could be
rusted out, which requires a new hot water heater.
What’s the purpose of a pressure relief valve on a water heater?
This safety device will open in case of high pressure or temperature.
What’s the difference between PVC and CPVC plastic pipe?
CPVC can be used on hot and cold lines, while PVC is for cold
water only. PVC is usually used as a drainpipe.
How should I cut plastic pipe? Any fine-tooth saw will work.
Be sure you remove any burrs.
Is 1/2” CPVC and 1/2” PVC the same size? No. CPVC is measured by O.D., similar to hard copper, PVC by I.D., like iron pipe.
Why do you recommend plastic pipe cleaners and primers?
These are applied to a pipe and fitting before applying the solvent
weld glue to ensure a strong bond. Their use is always a good idea,
especially if it’s for a water supply line.
What is plumber’s putty? It is a sealing putty used for sealing
basket strainers, garbage disposal rims and tub drains, etc.
Which is better for sealing - Teflon™tape or thread joint compound? Both do the same job. Teflon™tape is easier to work with
and makes a cleaner joint.
Got more questions? See the folks at your local hardware store.
Happy New Year from all of us to all of you!

News for the New Year •
•
As we leave a year bombarded with instant news of every twist on national conflicts and every nuance
of world strife, reminders of hope and deeds of good folks are refreshing. While we were busy counting our
blessings – a worthy but admittedly a self-serving task, others were busy helping neighbors in need throughout this wide-spread community – crossing invisible city borders like our magazine does. Although our
monthly format is not conducive to prompt coverage that ‘news’ normally requires, sharing the good news
of giving has a timeless appeal; it never gets old.
Compassion for those who are less fortunate is a requirement for a humane world. While there are some
who prefer to pass judgements instead, the presence of caring folks is good news for the new year ahead.
Happy New Year!
Pearl Gala Honors World War II Veterans
Hope Hospice honored eight local World War II heroes at
its 30th anniversary Pearl Gala on December 7 at the McKenna
Events Center in New Braunfels. Amidst a candlelight décor reminiscent of a 1940s Officers Club Christmas Ball, nearly 300 guests
listened intently as Hope Hospice Foundation Board Member Jay
Brewer read the military biographies of veterans Wallace Johnson, Bill Kolodzie, Victor Campos, Gerald Lutz, Josephine Reaves,
Robert Talbot, Jack Thomson and Wib Amacher.
Following the tribute, members of the New Braunfels High
School Marine Corps Junior ROTC saluted each of the veterans
personally and presented engraved wooden gift boxes from the
Hope Hospice Foundation. Dinner guests danced to the Big Band
sound of Johnny P. and the Wiseguys and enjoyed an elegant steak
dinner prepared by Fred Valdez of Adobe Catering. Texas State
University students assisted with a raffle of flat screen TVs.
A live auction led by Comal County Sheriff Bob Holder and
local auctioneer Gary Rogers of the NB Auction Co. spurred lively
competition among guests. Over 100 items were donated by local
businesses and individuals for a silent auction that included autographed copies of the book “The Greatest Generation” by former
news anchor Tom Brokaw.
Funds raised help support Hope’s Children’s Grief Therapy Programs and to assist uninsured patients, most of whom are workingage professionals whose illnesses caused them to lose their jobs
and, therefore, their insurance. For information, call 830-358-5217.
Fisher House Benefit Exceeds Expectations
On Sunday, November 24th, Max Bordelon and Max’s Roadhouse held their 1st Annual BAMC Fisher House Benefit at Max's
new entertainment venue in Spring Branch. All proceeds from the
200 tickets sold were donated directly to the BAMC Fisher House.
Live and silent auctions were held throughout the evening. Proceeds from both auctions were donated to Santa’s Rolling Reindeer.
The community came together and raised a whopping $49,575
during the event with ticket and donations totaling $21,060 and
$28,515 from auctions. Max donated use of his facility for the
event, his employees donated their time, the five bands who entertained also donated their services including country star Randy
Rogers. This was a spectacular event benefiting two very worthy
causes. The 2nd Annual Benefit is tentatively scheduled for November 23, 2014.
Santa’s Rolling Reindeer is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that began in 2001 to deliver toys to less fortunate children in
Comal, Bexar & Kendall counties and typically reach 400 to 600

New Braunfels Holiday Cheer
Reaches Canyon Lake family and more
Countless individuals, businesses and organizations have made
gifts of all sizes to the Hope Hospice Foundation this season.
Funds raised are used to support Hope’s programs and services,
primarily the Children’s Grief Program and the Community Assistance Program that assists uninsured patients, most of whom lost
their insurance when their illnesses caused them to lose their jobs.
One Canyon Lake man is likely facing his last months of life
and all he wanted for Christmas was to spend time with his family. Mr. Myers’ children and grandchildren were planning to come
home for Christmas, and he and his wife wanted this Christmas to
be a very special one for the whole family. Carol Irwin, owner of Buttermilk Café, and Mark Segovia, one
of their lead chefs, made sure of it. The restaurant donated all the
food. The Chef volunteered his time on Christmas Day to prepare
and deliver Christmas dinner for all twenty-one of them. This Act
of Kindness allowed the family to spend more time visiting with
their husband, father and grandfather.
Adobe Café and Sysco foods donated food and labor to the Hope
Hospice Foundation, To ensure more funds raised go straight to
patient care, Adobe Café and Sysco foods donated food and labor
to the Hope Hospice Pearl Anniversary Gala.
Home Instead, as they do annually, facilitated the adoption of a
dozen Hope Hospice patients so those without friends and family
nearby would get a Christmas gift.
Hope Hospice extends their gratitude on behalf of families like
the Myers, the Board, Staff and Volunteers.
Hope Hospice is a community-owned, not-for-profit hospice care
provider in New Braunfels that has been in service for over 30
years, assisting families and individuals in Canyon Lake as well.
