Piero Piluso - Monsters vs. Aliens - Nickelodeon Animation Studio
Piero Piluso is a veteran storyteller and artist. Classically trained in Illustration and Fine Arts, he
graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York City in 2000. He was immediately in high
demand as an illustrator, and ultimately was featured in American Illustration 24 for one of a series of
“SpongeBob” paintings created for Nickelodeon Marketing. While there, he also worked for a number
of animation companies.
Following his ten years in New York, Piero returned to Los Angeles.
Douglas Lovelace - Dragons: Riders of Berk
- DreamWorks Animation
Douglas Lovelace has been an instinctive storyographer since the age of four, when, in a Calvinesque
rhapsody, he was abducted by alien dinosaurs. This experience was to come in handy at a future
date, when applied to cinematic imagination. Working in the animation industry since 1998, he
has done story art for projects as diverse as Adult Swim’s “The Venture Bros” and DreamWorks’
“Dragons.” In his spare time he enjoys bicycles, coffee and training dragons.
Adam Ford, Deke Wightman, Kevin Mellon, Justin Wagner, Benji Williams - Archer
FX Networks
The Floyd County Productions Storyboard team is often compared to the 1985 Chicago Bears
(in regards to wins, headbands and shuffles.) They have two weeks and two days to complete
each episode -- start to finish, boarding without audio. Deke Wightman, Justin Wagner and Benji
Williams, Adam Ford, and Kevin Mellon are also members of the team. This conflux of scoundrels and
delinquents is led by Art Directors Chad Hurd and Neal Holman. They are both really, REALLY good
looking.
Alonso Ramos-Ramirez - Disney Mickey Mouse
- Disney Television Animation
Alonso Ramirez Ramos is a Storyboard Artist for Disney Television Animation, currently working on
“Gravity Falls” and “Disney Mickey Mouse.” In 2010, Alonso obtained a BFA in Character Animation
from the California Institute of the Arts. He was also a Story Intern at Pixar Animation Studios and a
Graphic Design Associate for Disney Consumer Products. Originally from Leon Guanajuato, Alonso
currently resides in sunny Burbank.
Daniel Chong - Toy Story of TERROR! - Pixar Animation Studios
Daniel Chong joined Pixar Animation Studios in 2009 and has worked as a story artist on several
short and feature productions including “Cars 2” and, most recently, on Pixar’s first TV Special “Toy
Story of TERROR!” He is currently working on Disney•Pixar’s upcoming film “Inside Out,” set to
release in 2015. Prior to joining Pixar, Chong worked as a story artist for Disney Feature Animation,
Blue Sky, Nickelodeon and Illumination. He earned a BFA from Cal State Long Beach and attended
CalArts.

Alonso Ramos-Ramirez - Gravity Falls - Disney Television Animation
Alonso Ramirez Ramos is a Storyboard Artist for Disney Television Animation, currently working
on Gravity Falls and Disney Mickey Mouse. In 2010, Alonso obtained a BFA in Character Animation
from the California Institute of the Arts. He was also a Story Intern at Pixar Animation Studios and a
Graphic Design Associate for Disney Consumer Products. Originally from Leon Guanajuato, Alonso

Guillermo Del Toro, Guy Davis, Ralph Sosa - The Simpsons - “Treehouse of Horror XXIV” Gracie Films in Association with 20th Century Fox TV
Writer-director GUILLERMO DEL TORO has astonished audiences with such films as Cronos, Hellboy
I and II, The Devil’s Backbone and Academy Award winner Pan’s Labyrinth. He co-authored The
Strain trilogy and begins production on his film Crimson Peak in 2014. Artist GUY DAVIS’ work
includes Pacific Rim, Pinocchio, ParaNorman, Steven Universe, The Strain, and Crimson Peak. He
created The Marquis graphic novel. RALPH SOSA has worked on The Simpsons in many capacities
since 1998, including Director.
Paul Watling - Justin Time - Guru Studio
Paul Watling is a storyboard artist based in Toronto, Canada. He got his start in the animation
industry at a.k.a. Cartoons, working on the hit Cartoon Network series “Ed, Edd and Eddy” under the
direction of animation legend Danny Antonucci. Shortly after, he moved to his hometown of Toronto
where he has worked on numerous animated series for US and Canadian studios. Although he has
had many roles in the industry, storyboarding was always his passion.

Steven MacLeod - The Croods
- DreamWorks Animation
Steven MacLeod served as a story artist on DreamWorks Animation’s “The Croods.” As a story
artist, MacLeod was tasked with taking pages of written script and transforming them, with
guidance from the directors, into visual storyboards that illustrated the key actions of a scene.
Eric Favela – Despicable Me 2 - Illumination Entertainment/Universal Pictures
After graduating from the California Institute of the Arts in 2006, Eric Favela joined Blue Sky
Studios’ story team. There, he worked on “Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who,” “Ice Age 3,” “Rio”
and “Ice Age 4.” In 2011, Favela joined Illumination as a story artist on “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax,”
“Despicable Me 2,” and as director of the animated short “Training Wheels.” He works from Tucson,
Arizona where he lives with his wife, two cats, dog -- and his most profound work of art to date, his
newborn son.
Dean Kelly - Monsters University
- Pixar Animation Studios
Dean Kelly joined Pixar Animation Studios in 2009 as a story artist on Disney•Pixar’s “Monsters
University.” Prior to Pixar, Kelly worked at a commercial animation studio in Minneapolis before
relocating to Los Angeles in 2000. Kelly worked at FOX on “The Simpsons,” and at Nickelodeon
on “Avatar: The Last Airbender” and “Penguins of Madagasgar.” Raised in Chelmsford, MA, Kelly
attended the Rhode Island School of Design. He currently resides in Oakland, CA, with his wife and
three children.

Prior to storyboarding on “Planes,” Jason also worked on Disney films “Winnie the Pooh” and “The
Princess and the Frog.”
John Ripa - Frozen
- Walt Disney Animation Studios
John Ripa has played a key role on Walt Disney Animation Studios’ animation team since 1993.
Starting as an assistant animator on “The Lion King,” Ripa soon moved on to become a full-fledged
animator on “Pocahontas” and “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” This was followed by supervising
animator roles on such films as “Tarzan,” “Treasure Planet” and “Meet the Robinsons.” He most
recently served as a storyboard artist on two of the studio’s most successful recent hits: “Tangled”
and “Frozen.”

Adam Arnold, Hugo Morales, Davrick Waltjen - Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness
- Nickelodeon Animation Studio
Adam Arnold is an Animatic Editor who has proudly worked on such productions as The Mighty B!,
Fanboy & Chum Chum, Kung Fu Panda & Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This is Adam’s 3rd Annie
nomination for editing, with a win in 2013! (GO NICK!)
After Cal Arts, Hugo Morales became quite the wizard at mouse clicking. He got his editing career
started in 2004, working on the hit animated series Megas XLR. Since then he has happily hopped,
skipped, and jumped to various shows and studios.
Myra Lopez, Ana Adams, Justin Baker - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Nickelodeon
Animation Studio
Anna, Justin and Myra have worked at Nickelodeon for almost 10 years. They began their journey
together on “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” in 2011. Their diverse editorial skills have enabled them
to work together efficiently and effectively with Anna editing Dialogue, Justin editing Animatics, and
Myra editing Final Picture. They feel truly honored to be recognized for their collaborative hard work.
Lynn Hobson - Dragons: Defenders of Berk - DreamWorks Animation
Lynn Hobson joined the DreamWorks Animation team in 2005 as an associate editor on several
feature length projects, including “Shrek Forever After,” “Monsters vs. Aliens” and “Megamind.” She
worked as lead editor on DreamWork’s “Dragons: Riders of Berk” and “Dragons: Defenders Of Berk.”
Before joining DreamWorks, Ms. Hobson worked on season 2 of “Spawn” for HBO Animation and
the first three seasons of Nickelodeon’s “SpongeBob Squarepants.” This is her second Annie Award
nomination.
Illya Owens - Disney Mickey Mouse - Disney Television Animation
Illya Owens is a Lead Editor at Disney TVA. She began her cartoon journey in 1997 as a scanner in
the Animatic Department, where she was allowed to grow into an Animation Editor. Her schooling
began when she was a child, watching cartoons every day before and after school, usually with a
bowl of cereal in her lap. In those years, she had no idea the research she was absorbing. She enjoys
expressing herself through timing and sound. Animation editing is a home where she’s allowed to be
funny.

As the “Toy Story of TERROR!” editing team, this group brings a trunk full of experience and heart to
these beloved characters. Having worked with Andy and Bonnie’s toys on a variety of Pixar feature
films (including “Toy Story 2” and “Toy Story 3”) as well as the short “Partysaurus Rex,” this group
was excited to reunite with Jesse and help her overcome a terrifying journey at the Sleep Well Motel.
Paul D. Calder - Futurama
- 20th Century Fox Television
Veteran animation editor Paul D. Calder has been with “Futurama” since the very beginning of
production. He has worked on every episode and will miss the well-oiled machine -- and the
day-to-day interactions with the crew.
Paul Douglas - Adventure Time
- Cartoon Network Studios
Ever since Paul Douglas saw his father editing on a Moviola at Hanna-Barbera, he wanted to work
in animation. In his thirty-year career, Paul has worked on such hit series as Smurfs, Scooby-Doo,
Dexter’s Laboratory, The Powerpuff Girls, Captain Planet, Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, Star
Wars: Clone Wars, Samurai Jack, Sym-biotic Titan, Capital Critters, Johnny Quest, The New Yogi Bear
Show, The Jetsons and Johnny Bravo. Paul lives in Ventura with his wife, Michele and his son Reed.
Jason W.A. Tucker - Star Wars: The Clone Wars - Lucasfilm Animation
Jason W.A. Tucker has worked on more than 100 episodes of the critically acclaimed Emmy®
Award-winning “Star Wars: The Clone Wars.” He has over a decade of experience in episodic
television and feature films, editing both animation and live-action. He’s worked in editorial on
“Party of Five,” “Boston Public,” “CSI: Miami,” and the film “Cats & Dogs.” He was the Animation
Editor on Joe Dante’s “Looney Tunes: Back In Action,” Bill Cosby’s “Fat Albert,” and Eric Goldberg’s
“A Monkey’s Tale.”

Darren Holmes - The Croods
- DreamWorks Animation
Darren Holmes served as editor of DreamWorks Animation’s THE CROODS. His animation credits
include HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON, RATATOUILLE, LILO & STITCH and THE IRON GIANT.
Holmes is a member of the American Cinema Editors and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and
Sciences.
James Ryan - Turbo - DreamWorks Animation
James Ryan served as editor on DreamWorks Animation’s “Turbo.” “Turbo” is a high-velocity comedy
about a snail who dares to dream big - and fast. After a freak accident infuses him with the power
of super-speed, Turbo kicks into overdrive and embarks on an extraordinary journey to achieve the
seemingly impossible: competing in the world’s fastest race, the Indianapolis 500.
Fabienne Alvarez-Giro - Ernest & Celestine - GKIDS
Fabienne Alvarez-Giro has edited live action feature films and documentaries for more than 20 years.
She started in feature animation by editing “The Secret of Kells,” directed by Tomm Moore and Nora
Twomey and produced by Les Armateurs. “Ernest and Celestine,” directed by Benjamin Renner,
Vincent Patar and Stephane Aubier (and also produced by Les Armateurs) is the third animated
feature film she has edited. At the moment she is working on a new animated feature: “Yellowbird.”
Greg Snyder, Gregory Amundson, Steve Bloom - Monsters University
- Pixar Animation Studios
From their monstrous combined height of 18 ft, 6 in (and weight of 553 lbs) to their previouslyannoying tendency to think and act like college students, the editors of Monsters University had
many advantages tackling the challenge of a major motion picture. Greg, Steve and Greg would like
to thank their talented, hard-working crew for making them look good, tolerating their carousing,
contraband, and caffeine psychosis -- and for not turning them in for that “thing” back in 2011.
Jeff Draheim - Frozen - Walt Disney Animation Studios
Jeff Draheim served as lead editor for “Frozen.” In that role, he cut together storyboards to create
sequences in the early stages of production -- and to, ultimately, build a story reel. His other Disney
credits include lead editor assignments on the popular Disney feature “The Princess and the Frog,”
as well as such notable shorts and TV specials as “How to Hook Up Your Home Theater,” “Ballad of
Nessie,” “Prep & Landing: Operation: Secret Santa” and “Prep & Landing: Naughty vs. Nice.”

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

As I sat down to write this year’s “president’s message,” I worried about what I might say that would end up
as the usual, imminently forgettable bromides about our annual accomplishments. Accomplishments there
have been, of course. Our membership is growing, our finances are stable, our Animation Archive relationship
with the Motion Picture Academy is progressing beautifully, the Animation Educators’ Forum is becoming
more academically and creatively influential, we have helped members of our community in need through our
Animation Aid Foundation, have re-started our animation preservation efforts and this year we will begin a
long term ASIFA-Hollywood Animation Academy initiative, that we hope will develop into the central meeting
place for animation on a world-wide scale.
All well and good. All important to say, but what I really wanted to get to this year was the root of things.
Then, I remembered...
One hundred years ago almost to this very day, Winsor McCay’s groundbreaking film, “Gertie the Dinosaur,”
was first shown to the general public. Although there were animated films before Gertie, notably, J. Stuart
Blackton’s “Humorous Phases of Funny Faces,” most animation historians credit McCay’s Gertie with the
beginning of true character animation—giving inanimate, sequential drawings not only weight, anatomy and
motion, but also, and perhaps more to the point, allowing an animated character the much more complex and
illusive qualities of emotion and thought, or, as Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston put it, the “illusion of life.”
Much has happened to our community of artists, craftspeople, inventors, technicians, and filmmakers over this
past century, but what drove McCay then, and what drives us today, remains that passion to take an idea and,
with pencils or clay, or armatured foam rubber, or pixels, create completely new worlds and characters that
are...alive!
What we try to do at ASIFA-Hollywood, all year long and especially on Annie night, is celebrate that passion,
honor the hard work that goes into making animation, remind us of where we have come from and try our best
to take a peek at where we are going.
So, here’s to Winsor and Gertie, and to all who have followed from those early beginnings through the last
hundred years. Here’s to the recipients of tonight’s awards and to all of us here and watching from all over the
world. Here’s to everyone who works at and loves creating life a frame at a time. Hooray for our achievements.

Significant and benevolent or charitable impact on the art and industry of animation.
Alice Davis
Alice Estes Davis dreamed of being an animator at time
when women only worked in ink and paint -- but her
contribution to animation has been unique, lasting and
profound.
As a young female artist, Alice won a scholarship to the
Chouinard Art Institute -- however, the only place available
to her was in costume design. Quite luckily for all of us,
she was nevertheless able to take the evening animation
drawing class from Marc Davis.
After graduating, she became a successful designer
of lingerie. “The animation drawing classes helped
tremendously in designing brassieres and girdles and such,
as well as the costumes for the audio-animatronic figures
later,” she explains. “I learned how the body works and
where stresses occur.”
In 1952, she again crossed paths with Marc Davis. Romance
blossomed. The couple married in June of 1956. They
remained together until Marc’s death in early 2000.
It was 1964, when The Disney Imagineers were at work on
the attractions for that year’s New York World’s Fair, when
Davis received a call “out of the blue” from Walt Disney’s
secretary. Walt was asking if she’d like to do the costumes
for the “It’s a Small World” attraction. The answer, of
course, was a resounding yes. She started at 9 o’clock the
next morning.
“Not only did I get to work with Marc, I got to work with
Mary Blair, who was one of my idols,” she recalls. “Mary
set all the colors for the costumes; I did the research
and made pencil sketches. We put the ride together on
Stage One of the Disney
lot. We listened to ‘It’s a
Small World’ from early
morn ‘til late evening, day
after day. They only had
one tape and it made the
dolls work; I was never
able to get the man
handling the sound to turn
it down.”
“Walt always wanted the
best,” she adds. “On ‘Small
World,’ I asked him how
much I would be allowed
to spend on the costumes;
he said, ‘We don’t think
that way. I want the dolls
to be very cute and intricate and to have the flavor of each
country. We don’t worry about what they cost - I have a
building full of accountants who are supposed to do that.
We’re supposed to produce the best, because the public
will always pay you back.’”
After “Small World,” Davis “graduated from sweet little
children to dirty old men overnight.” She went to work
on Pirates of the Caribbean, translating the images in her
husband’s vivid drawings into clothing.
Since Marc’s death, Alice has helped to administer the
Animation Celebration at the Motion Picture Academy
(which the couple endowed). Usually held once a year,
the programs have offered retrospectives of the work
of important animation artists (Nick Park, John Lasseter,
Richard Williams and Frédéric Back among them), as well
as discussions of topics as diverse as industry mentoring
and voice acting. Alice works tirelessly to raise money for
scholarships in animation and art programs.
Although her career in design was interesting and
rewarding, Alice has one regret: “I always wanted to be an
animator, but that just didn’t happen in my time. I’m not
broken-hearted, but I would have loved to try animation.”
She takes pride in knowing that her work helped to pave
the way for a new generation of women artists.

DZED Systems for Dragonframe Stop-Motion Animation Software
This year’s Ub Iwerks Annie Award for Technical Achievement goes to DZED Systems’ Dragonframe
software. DZED designed the software to capture stop-motion animation with digital still cameras.
Developed by brothers Dyami and Jamie Caliri, Dragonframe uniquely meets the specific needs of
professional stop-motion production. It features an intuitive animation interface, built-in camera controls and
a cinematography workspace, so directors of photography can efficiently set and adjust composition and
lighting.
Dragonframe has truly guided the way for the DSLR revolution in stop-motion. Its powerful hardware
integrations wrangle both lighting and motion control, making it possible to shoot complex scenes that
previously within the reach of animation technology.
Because the software combines many critical aspects of stop-motion into one program, Dragonframe’s
usefulness goes far beyond a single department. Animators, audio track readers, lighting crews and DPs all
use the software. Studios wordlwide run Dragonframe; among them, LAIKA, Aardman and Disney/Burning
Windmills, as well as LA-based stop-motion companies including Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, Starburns
Industries, Shadow Machine and Bix Pix.
Beyond its big-studio muscle, Dragonframe shares ASIFA’s pro-individual-artist philosophy. Independent
(and small-studio) accessibility is an important part of DZED’s core values -- and they walk the talk. DZED
has priced its software sufficiently reasonably to put it in the hands of independent and student filmmakers.
This has led to the birth of several Oscar®-nominated (and, of course, Annie-Award-winning) independent
and student films that were produced using the Dragonframe software.
The software’s incredible ease of use, commitment to product development, advancement of the art form
and accessibility to the masses -- both professional and novice alike -- contributed to our decision to award
this year’s Ub Iwerk’s Technology Award to DZED Systems’ Dragonframe.

Ben Adams began designing on “Regular Show” at the beginning of Season 1. He has also
storyboarded a couple of episodes as well as working on a couple of other shows at Cartoon
Network, such as “The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack” and “Secret Mountain Fort Awesome.”

Danny Hynes is a graduate of SVA. He worked as a Character Designer on “The Venture Brothers”

Carter Goodrich, Takao Noguchi and Shane Prigmore served as character designers on
DreamWorks Animation’s “The Croods.” The team worked on early sketches – drawings that
depicted characters that were alternately rough, tough, brute, and, in some instances, scrawny
and goofy – that gave the filmmakers a sense of what the characters could be. They then defined
the look of both the characters and creatures to the point where they suddenly came alive.

Sylvain Deboissy, Shannon Tindle - Turbo - DreamWorks Animation
Sylvain Deboissy and Shannon Tindle worked as character designers on DreamWorks Animation’s
“Turbo.” Heroes need to be distinctive, so designing “Turbo” was a study in broad appeal, since
it was ever apparent that snails don’t have the cuddliest identity in the real world. Deboissy and
Tindle worked on simple matters like mouth size and toothiness, which made all the difference in
securing a likable protagonist.
Craig Kellman – Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2 - Sony Pictures Animation
Craig Kellman’s animation career has ranged from character design work on TV series such as
“Samurai Jack” and “The Powerpuff Girls” to feature film work such as the “Madagascar” film
series, “Monsters vs. Aliens,” “Hotel Transylvania” and “Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2,” for
which he also directed the end credits. Craig has directed for TV as well: including “The Ricky
Gervais Show” on HBO, for which he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy.
Chris Sasaki - Monsters University - Pixar Animation Studios
Chris Sasaki joined Pixar Animation Studios in 2010 as a character designer for “Monsters
University.” Prior Pixar, Sasaki worked as a character designer at Jim Henson, DisneyTV, BlueSky,
and LAIKA. He also interned at DreamWorks Animation where he learned about the production
pipeline and process of a feature film. Raised in Mt. View, CA., Sasaki was drawn to animation
after seeing Pixar’s 2001 feature film “Monsters, Inc.”

Katsuhiro Otomo debuted as a manga writer and artist in 1973.
In 1983, he published “Domu,” “Akira” and other extraordinary

government decorated him with a Chevalier Order of Art and

Phil Tippett, the founder and namesake of Tippett Studio, has thus far
enjoyed a thirty-year career in visual effects and stop-motion animation.

“Robocop,” “Jurassic Park” and “Starship Troopers.” So far, Tippett’s work
has garnered two Academy Awards®, six Academy nominations, one
BAFTA award (and four nominations), two Emmys and the prestigious
Georges Méliès award.
Phil’s strong belief in mentorship and the spirit of creativity in theatrical
illusion has inspired countless artists -- as well as audiences -- to share

ARCHIVE
For nearly 40 years, the ASIFA Animation Archive has collected the films, artwork and business records of
many individuals and animation companies in the LA area and beyond. What we did well during that time
was to take in almost everything that was offered to us and keep the rain off of the work. What we did not
do well was categorize and curate what we had, so that, while the collection grew, it also became more and
more unwieldy and unmanageable. It is not stretching a point very much to say that there came a time when
the accumulation actually became a fire hazard!
We knew that what we were doing was not particularly good stewardship, but we also knew that to do
anything more was not practical for an all-volunteer organization. So, two years ago, with a bit of guidance
from Tony Angellotti, one of our studio advisory board members, we began to discuss the possibility of
partnering with the archive at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Frankly, we were convinced
that, once they saw the mess that our collection had become, they would go screaming into the street,
and write us off as a lost cause. What really happened was just the opposite. With the strong support of
archivists Anne Coco and Howard Prouty, we formed an alliance with A.M.P.A.S.® and began to think of our
collection as the “ASIFA-Hollywood Archive at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.” Soon, the
Academy hired Stephen Danley to begin the daunting assessment of just what we had.
Progress has been remarkable. Much of what crowded our back room has been assessed, inventoried and
moved to the Academy. Other items, not falling into Academy collection guidelines, have at least been
itemized for us. Still, other things, carefully evaluated but of no artistic or historical significance, have been
disposed of.
There is, of course, lots more to do! There
are more than 850 boxes filled with items
that have been sitting in off-site storage
for years and have not yet been assessed
and sorted. Other parts of our collection,
having no ties to theatrical work, will
find a different home, either with us, as
part of our upcoming ASIFA -Hollywood
Animation Academy initiative, or with
another institution, again, under our
auspices but housed and catalogued in a
working archive.
So our collection will continue to grow and
flourish, now with the assurance that when
people or groups leave their legacy with us,
it will be not only available for examination
and study, but also will be taken care of
properly and in perpetuity.

their work on Gollum as one of their career highlights.

Dave Clayton, Simeon Duncombe, Jung Min Chan, Matthew Cioffi and Guillame Francois were
charged with creating the grotesque and flamboyant character of The Goblin King from Peter
Jackson’s film “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.” They are a tight-knit team (including some
members that have worked together at Weta Digital for over 10 years), bringing some of their
best-loved characters to life. The group is currently working on the third film in the trilogy.
Hal Hickel, Chris Lentz, Derrick Carlin, Steve Rawlins, Kyle Winkelman - Pacific Rim
Industrial Light & Magic Hal Hickel, Chris Lentz, Derrick Carlin, Steve Rawlins and Kyle Winkelman comprise the key
animation team behind the Character Animation of “Pacific Rim.” In the film, massive Kaiju
monsters battle with robots of epic scale in an apocalyptic battle for control of Earth. The
challenges of creating a lineup of robots and alien creatures standing taller than 250 feet helped
the team push the boundaries of weight and movement to create creatures that are believable -and full of cinematic energy.

Bradley Schaffer hails from the small town of Benton City, Washington. He is a character animator by
day and a freelance stop-motion filmmaker by night. Bradley graduated from CalArts Experimental
Animation in 2011 and has been working with the League of Buddies ever since.
Eric Urban - Ubermansion
- Stoopid Buddy Stoodios
In addition to animating on “Übermansion” at Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, Eric currently works on
“Robot Chicken.” He has also worked on “ParaNorman,” “Beforel Orel,” “Community,” “Anomalisa”
and various commercials. Eric also develops stop-motion animated video games. He graduated from
SCAD in 2007.
JC Tran Quang Thieu - Toy Story OF TERROR! - Pixar Animation Studios
Jean-Claude Tran joined Pixar Animation Studios in 2004 as an animator on “Cars” and continued to
work on Academy Award-winning films “Ratatouille,” “Wall•E,” “Up,” “Toy Story 3,” “Brave,” as well
as Disney•Pixar’s 2013 film “Monsters University,” and Pixar’s first TV special “Toy Story of TERROR!”
Prior to Pixar, Tran worked at Disney in the Paris and Florida studios. Raised just south of Paris, Tran
attended the French animation school The Gobelins. He currently resides in Dublin, California.
David DeVan - Toy Story OF TERROR! - Pixar Animation Studios Character
David DeVan joined Pixar Animation Studios in 1996, animating on “A Bug’s Life,” “Toy Story 2,”
“Monsters, Inc.,” “Finding Nemo,” “Cars,” “The Incredibles,” “Ratatouille,” “Wall•E” and “Brave.” Prior
to Pixar, DeVan attended CalArts and worked briefly as an animator at LucasArts Entertainment. He
is currently a supervising animator on Disney•Pixar’s upcoming feature “Finding Dory,” set to release
in 2016. DeVan lives in Piedmont, CA with his wife and three children.
Kureha Yokoo - Toy Story OF TERROR! - Pixar Animation Studios Character
Kureha Yokoo joined Pixar Animation Studios in 1998 as a crowd animator on “A Bug’s Life,” and
has since worked on “Toy Story 2,” “Monsters, Inc.,” “Finding Nemo,” “The Incredibles,” “Ratatouille,”
“Up,” “Wall•E” and “Brave.” Born in Japan, Yokoo moved to San Francisco with her parents in 1974.
After earning BA’s in Urban Planning and Animal Husbandry from Brown University, Yokoo went on
to study Character Animation at San Francisco’s Academy of Art College. She resides in Sonoma,
California.
Keith Kellogg - Star Wars: The Clone Wars - Lucasfilm Animation
Keith Kellogg is an animation professional with over 15 years experience working in visual effects and
animated films. He was a Senior and Lead animator working on such films as “The Matrix Reloaded”
and “Revolutions,” “The Chronicles of Narnia” and “Beowulf.” He worked for Robert Zemeckis as a
Digital Performance Supervisor on his performance capture films. Last year he was nominated for his
work on “Clone Wars” and is the Animation Supervisor for “Star Wars: Rebels” from Lucasfilm.

Thom Roberts - Epic

Senior Animator Thom Roberts was born to parents hailing from Durban, South Africa and raised
along with his three brothers in Montreal, Canada. A graduate of the Vancouver Film School, he
began his animation career in earnest after joining the crew at Rhythm & Hues in Los Angeles,
working on projects such as the Oscar® winning “The Golden Compass.” After several years of visual
effects animation, he made the jump to animated features in 2008, joining Blue Sky Studios -- where
he remains today.
Jonathan Del Val – Despicable Me 2
- Illumination Entertainment/Universal Pictures
Graduate in animation from Georges Melies school in 2003, Jonathan Del Val began his career at a
French VFX company. He later was a Character Animator on the short film “French Roast,” which
received an ANIMA award and Oscar® nomination for Best Animated Short Film. In 2007, he made
his first entree into feature films on “A Monster in Paris.” Del Val served as a Senior Animator for
“Despicable Me,” “The Lorax” and “Despicable Me 2.” He is now a Supervising Animator on the 2015
release “Minions.”
Jakob Jensen - The Croods - DreamWorks Animation
Jakob Hjort Jensen served as the animation supervisor of the character ‘Guy’ in DreamWorks
Animation’s “The Croods.” He joined DreamWorks in 1995, where he worked as an animator on the
character of Young Moses in “The Price of Egypt.” A native of Copenhagen, Denmark, Jensen
started his career in animation at the age of 17.
John Chun Chiu Lee - Monsters University
- Pixar Animation Studios
John Chun Chiu Lee joined Pixar Animation Studios in 2006 and has worked as a character animator
on Academy Award®- winning films “Ratatouille,” “Wall•E,” “Up,” “Toy Story 3” and “Brave.” Most
recently, he was a character animator on Disney•Pixar’s “Monsters University.” Prior to joining Pixar,
Lee attended Sheridan College for 2D and 3D animation and worked on several film, television

Kitarō Kōsaka began his career in 1979 at the Oh! Production studio. In 1986, he went freelance
and soon went on to tackle numerous projects as a Key and Supervising Animation Director for
the noted animation studio Studio Ghibli -- with, of course, the famed director Hayao Miyazaki
(of whose work he is himself an acknowledged fan). In 2003, he directed the cycling anime film,
“Nasu: Summer in Andalusia,” adapted from Iō Kuroda’s manga “Nasu” (which Miyazaki, a fan
of cycling, himself recommended to Kōsaka). The film soon went on to become the first work
of anime ever to be selected for Cannes. Kōsaka has worked on many other projects, including
adaptations of manga artist Naoki Urasawa’s works, including “Yawara,” “Master Keaton and
Monster,” “Clover” and “Double X.”
Tony Smeed - Frozen
- Walt Disney Animation Studios
Tony Smeed joined Walt Disney Animation Studios in 1996 as a CG animator trainee and has gone
on to become one of the Studios’ most accomplished animators. In addition to “Frozen,” Smeed
has been a supervising animator on such Disney films as “Chicken Little” and “Wreck-It Ralph.”
He has received two Annie Award nominations (one for “Prep & Landing” and a win for “Prep &
Landing: Naughty vs. Nice”) and three VES Award nominations (“Tangled” and “Wreck-It Ralph”).
Patrick Imbert - Ernest & Celestine
- GKIDS
Born in 1977 in France, Patrick Imbert graduated from Gobelins animation school in 1999. He
has mainly worked as a 2D animator for several years on various productions for TV series, ads
and movies before serving as director of animation for feature-length films such as “Ernest &
Celestine” (2012) and “A Rigged World” (2015).

For “The Croods,” production designer Christophe Lautrette - and art directors Paul Duncan and
Dominique R. Louis - were tasked with creating an incredible new world. Because there was nothing
for the artistic team to reference, it was a chance for their imaginations to run wild. The idea of
fashioning a land from scratch was especially tantalizing for the team. “For an artist, there’s nothing
better than having the opportunity to create a world that doesn’t - but could - exist,” says Lautrette.
Yarrow Cheney, Eric Guillon – Despicable Me 2

“Despicable Me 2” marks the 3rd collaboration for production designers Yarrow Cheney and Eric
Guillon. Guillon previously art directed “Despicable Me” and “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax,” while Cheney
served as production designer on both films. For “Despicable Me,” they received an Annie nomination
for Best Production Design in an Animated Feature Production. For “The Lorax,” Cheney and Guillon—
alongside Colin Stimpson—were nominated for an Annie for Character Design in an Animated Feature

William Joyce (Production Designer) is a renowned children’s book author and illustrator as well as
Creative Partner and Academy Award winning director at Moonbot Studios. Greg Couch (Production
Designer) has been involved in the development of most of Blue Sky’s films. Michael Knapp (Art
Director) art directed the Oscar® nominated short “No Time For Nuts” as well as “Ice Age: Dawn of
the Dinosaurs.” The three of them first worked together on Blue Sky’s second film, “Robots,” in 2001.

Marisa Musy (Zaza) graduated from the Ecole Boulle in Paris in interior architecture. She became chief

stories and books for children, but broadened to thrillers and noir. “Ernest And Celestine” is his

Annie Awards
Since 1972, ASIFA-Hollywood has hosted an annual awards
ceremony to honor individuals who have made significant
contributions to the art of animation. Originally designed to
honor the lifetime achievements of legendary veterans of
the field, the Annie Awards now recognizes the year’s best
animated features, television productions, commercials,
short subjects and outstanding individual achievements
in the field of animation. Qualified members participate
in the nomination process and final voting. The Annie
Awards are regarded as animation’s highest honor, and the
ceremony is one of ASIFA-Hollywood’s most prestigious
and elegant events.
ASIFA Archives and Offices
ASIFA-Hollywood is working diligently in conjunction
with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
to professionally archive nearly forty years of collected
animation artifacts, dating back to the earliest days of our
art form. We hope that, as part of our upcoming ASIFAHollywood Animation Academy initiative that we will also
be able to revitalize our digital archive efforts for the
worldwide use of artists, scholars and students. Additionally,
a concentrated effort is underway to permanently staff
our offices and redesign our facility footprint, making the
Members’ Screenings and Events
Throughout the year members are invited to special screenings
of the latest animated features often featuring an informative
Q & A with the filmmakers. Other screenings are often
programs you cannot see anywhere else. Presentations
include rare animated features, anime, tributes to individual
animators, thumbed collections of Hollywood cartoons,
the best of ASIFA-EAST, Ottawa, and other international
festivals. ASIFA-Hollywood also presents throughout
the year, a number of panel discussions celebrating past
animation classics as well as educational symposiums
aimed at both the student and the professional.
MEMBERSHIP CATEGORIES
We invite you to join the International Animated Film
Society, ASIFA-Hollywood, and to participate in the various
activities that we have to offer, whether attending an
event or volunteering “behind the scenes.” Membership
is available in the following packages:
Professional Membership ($150/year) individual, corporate
individual and out of US
Associate Membership ($45/year) students, studio support
and enthusiasts
Patron Membership ($200/year) professional only
If you are working for one of our corporate member studios,
check with your HR representative to see if you can be
added to their member list. Or you may join on your own
by writing the studio name (subject to verification) on the
enrollment form.
