Art in Aid of Society
Years of experience in various fields and with different
responsibilities at Raad have led me to believe that
charity and art go hand in hand. Art helps in the
evolution and growth of human beings and charity
frees the society of its deficiencies.
It is only because of this outlook; we have witnessed a
voluminous and enthusiastic presence of artists in our
various cultural and charitable activities.
Referring to our history, we must remember examples
set by artists in order to support and help those in
need. Taking into consideration the dedication and
support that we have received from the artists of our
beloved nation Raad has put some fascinating
artworks on display. The heart of the contributing
artists and everyone involved with Raad charity beats
with the hope for your able hands to reach out for
those disabled people.

Raad Charity
In 1985, in line with the rest of the nation, a group of students mainly from the technical faculty
of Tehran University were inspired by a verse from a chapter in Quran called Raad.“God will
not transform the status of a nation unless the nation attempts to transform it itself”.
Inspired by this verse, these graduates decided to lay the foundation of this organization to
extend a supporting arm to the disabled; a foundation that aims to make financial and social
independence a reality rather than a dream for the disabled. In 1984, Raad was officially
registered (with the registration number of 2811) and started its activities. Raad held its
educational courses in two small rooms in Aba Basir blind clinic located in a very poor area in
southern Tehran. Gradually, Raad’s services and facilities were increasingly embraced by the
physically disabled, which came as an encouragement to Raad’s founders to think of a more
equipped building especially designed to cater for the needs of the disabled. In less than 10
years, in late 1980’s Raad was able to purchase 2700 sq. meters of land and initiate the
construction of a building suitable for the disabled. It took 10 years to finally complete various
sectors of this complex, comprising of 4 floors with a built area of 4200 sq. meters.
Today, this building is equipped with educational and cultural facilities such as buffet with
semi-industrial kitchen, library, gallery, conference hall, classrooms, workshops and a
rehabilitation clinic. The center is now proudly an example for other centers aiding to the
disabled.
The initial motive of the founders of Raad was to provide education in applied science and
technology to prepare Raad’s members to meet the requirements of a real job. The absence
of appropriate facilities at universities drained the enthusiasm of the disabled, which led to a
lot of them withdrawing from these institutions. Determined to prevent this, Raad obtained the
necessary legal permits and established the first higher education institution specifically
designed to meet the needs of the disabled.
As a result of these indefatigable endeavors, science and technological center at Raad
managed to attract students for pre-bachelor’s degree in accounting. Shortly after this, Raad
expanded its subjects to include social working, pre-school teachers training, graphic design,
software engineering and sports coach training for the disabled. Raad has also started
enrolling for bachelor’s degree in accounting and social working.
So far, the charitable outlook of the founders of Raad charity has made it possible for its
members to benefit from its services completely free. Raad also provides an opportunity for
the relatives of these members to use its specialized educational services to understand the
special care needs of the disabled.
In 1998, public relations office of the United Nations (UNDPI) officially registered Raad as an
NGO. This made it possible for Raad to get recognized among the international charitable
trusts. Raad’s international activities began with the participation of the national team in the
vocational Olympiad of India in 2003. The team’s constant presence in these Olympiads finally
paid off in the 8th year of the competitions held in Seoul, Korea in 2011. The team was
commendably ranked 9th among 58 countries. Two of the contestants from Raad achieved
bronze medals in the competitions.
The purpose of this brief introduction is to unveil a part of Raad’s activities to all the art lovers
and many stories are going to be left untold. It suffices to say that Raad currently provides
scientific and skill-based education to more than 5000 members with 30% of them successfully
achieved job placements. Raad has set examples for all the other centers aiding to the
disabled. Currently, there are 18 centers with similar activities all across the country. Hence we
believe, “Raad does not do miracles, it merely provides a platform for the disabled by enabling
and motivating them to be a part of the society and achieve their goals”.
