f there is one travel destination which should be
called a dream destination, it’s Rio de Janeiro.
The Brazilian metropolis is a symbol of multi­
cultural life in Brazil and radiates joie de vivre,
a modern urban lifestyle and a southern tempera­
ment. Particular attention will be on Rio de Ja­
neiro next year – not just because the summer
Olympics will be held there from the 5th to the
21st of August 2016, but also because Edelweiss
will be offering two direct flights a week from
Zurich from April 2016. Let yourself be inspired
to take a trip from page 16 on. Joie de vivre, tem­
perament and global culture also characterise the
second holiday destination profiled – the capital
of Cuba, Havana. Our editorial team was able to
photograph for the first time those clubs in which
the Cuban musical culture is celebrated in the most
authentic way. It’s a very exciting report, which we
were able to write thanks to the help of Swiss Cuba
expert and founder of the famous Caliente! festi­
vals Roger Furrer and with the permission of the
Cuban Ministry of the Interior. I wish you exciting

m Gänsemarsch laufen die Gäste den zwei Flight
Attendants über den zum Flugfeld umgebauten
Fussballplatz zum Zeppelin nach. Der Edelweiss
Zeppelin ist ein hochsensibles Fluggerät. Bei zu
viel Wind kann er nicht in die Luft. Trotzdem und
vielleicht sogar gerade deswegen ist er hier in Basel auch ein so beliebtes Fotosujet: Der Edelweiss

the air. Despite this, and perhaps to some extent
because of it, it is an extremely popular subject

Zeppelin weckt Sehnsüchte. Flight Attendant Laura Wahl aus Basel hat sich gut auf ihren Flug vorbereitet. Im Zeppelin sitzt sie direkt neben Captain
Lars Putzek. Vorher fragen sie und ihre Kollegin
Seraina Greminger sich Informationen über den
Zeppelin ab: «Wie viel Mal hätte unser Zeppelin
im legendären Hindenburg-Zeppelin Platz gehabt?» «Was, vier Mal! So gross war der?» Alles
Infos, die ein wissbegieriger Gast fragen könnte.
Da muss eine Antwort parat sein. Aus Sicherheitsgründen ist der Edelweiss Zeppelin im Gegensatz
zur Hindenburg selbstverständlich mit unbrennbarem Gas gefüllt.
Rund um den Flugplatz herrscht Ferienfeeling:

Liegestühle. Man beginnt zu träumen: Eigentlich
fehlt nur das Meer. Ach, Zeppelin, trag mich doch
fort jetzt, irgendwohin an den Strand! So weit geht
for photos here in Basel – the Edelweiss Zeppelin
awakens a desire to fly. Flight attendant Laura

flight. In the Zeppelin she sits right next to Captain
Lars Putzek. Beforehand, she asked her colleague
Seraina Greminger for information about the Zeppelin: “How many times would our Zeppelin have
fitted into the legendary Hindenburg Zeppelin?”
“What, four times! It was that big?” All the information that an inquisitive guest might ask for. Then
she has to have an answer ready. For safety reasons the Edelweiss Zeppelin, unlike the Hindenburg, is of course filled with incombustible gas.
A holiday feel prevails around the airfield – spectators lounge comfortably in one of the Edelweiss
deck chairs. You start to dream – really, only the
sea is missing. Oh, Zeppelin, carry me away now,
to somewhere on a beach! The flight around Basel

Zeppelin wird keine Sekunde alleine gelassen
Nebenan wird gekickt. Der Flugplatz in Münchenstein/BL befindet sich direkt an der Basler Stadtgrenze und neben dem Fussballstadion des FC
Basel. Ein gutes Pflaster für Überflieger: Auch
Roger Federer ist hier aufgewachsen. Irma Pittard und Mireille Haag sind Mitglieder im SuperConstellation-Verein. «Die Super-Connie ist ein
Kult-Flugzeug aus den 50er Jahren. Genauso Kult
ist der Zeppelin. Deshalb wollten wir uns den anwon’t go that far, but it will nonetheless go over
the Rhine. The rows of houses on the river seem
close enough to touch. And again wanderlust
makes itself known – if you kept flying, simply
following the river, all the way to the Netherlands,
where it flows into the North Sea...
The Zeppelin isn’t left alone for a second
Next door there’s a kickabout. The airfield in
Münchenstein/BL is right on the city limits and
next to the FC Basel football stadium. A good
patch for high-fliers – Roger Federer also grew up
here. Irma Pittard and Mireille Haag are members
of the Super Constellation club. “The Super Connie
is a cult aeroplane from the 50s. The Zeppelin is
just as cult. That’s why we wanted to see it.” The
airship is named after its inventor, Count Ferdinand

Was ist das Schwierigste am Zeppelinfliegen?
Das Starten und Landen. Da ist man ganz den
Witterungen ausgesetzt und muss auf wenig Platz
manövrieren.
Ganz speziell hier auf dem Platz in Basel?
Klar, er sieht zwar gross aus, bei Schwenkungen
brauchen wir aber die ganzen acht Fussballplätze.
Was muss ein Zeppelinpilot mitbringen?
Neben 1000 Stunden Flugerfahrung muss er auch ein
bisschen entspannt sein! Schliesslich beträgt die
Reisegeschwindigkeit gemütliche 70 Stundenkilometer.
What’s most difficult about f lying a Zeppelin?
Starting off and landing, because you’re entirely
at the mercy of the weather and have to manoeuvre
in not very much space.
Particularly special here on the ground in Basel?
Of course, it looks pretty big but we need the whole
eight football pitches to turn around.
What does a Zeppelin pilot need?
Alongside 1000 hours of flying experience, they have
to be a little bit relaxed! After all, the cruising speed
is an unhurried 70 kilometres per hour.

wurde 1900 im deutschen Friedrichshafen am Bodensee gebaut, wo auch der Edelweiss Zeppelin
herstammt. Ein Museum erinnert dort an die Verdienste des Grafen und des einst militärisch eingesetzten Zeppelins.
«Über die eigene Stadt zu fliegen ist ein wahnsinnig tolles Erlebnis», sagt Deborah Rosenstein,
welche für Edelweiss die Geburtstags-Events
koordiniert. Die Zürcherin flog vom zürcherischen
Männedorf aus über ihre Lieblingsstadt: «Der Zeppelin schwebt tief und langsam, man kann so fast
durchs Fenster in die eigene Wohnung schauen.»
Während der Flugpausen wird der Zeppelin an
einem Gestänge festgezurrt. Auch dann ist immer
ein Pilot im Cockpit. Alleine gelassen wird das
sensible und teure Fluggerät keine Sekunde: 24
Stunden ist jemand direkt vor Ort. Bisweilen bläst
der Wind den festgemachten Zeppelin leicht nach
oben und er bewegt sich mit dem Wind. Und man
will sich am liebsten mit ihm treiben lassen.

You are reminded of the Count’s achievements
and of the way the Zeppelin was once used for
military purposes.
“Flying over my own city was an incredibly cool
experience,” says Deborah Rosenstein, who is coordinating the birthday events for Edelweiss. The
Zurich native flew from Männedorf over Zurich –
her favourite city: “The Zeppelin floats close to the
ground and slowly, so you can almost see into your
own home from the window.” During the breaks
between flights, the Zeppelin is securely lashed to
a frame. Even then there’s always an experienced
pilot in the cockpit. The sensitive and expensive
flying machine isn’t left unattended even for a
second – someone is right there 24 hours a day.
Sometimes the wind blows the moored Zeppelin
upwards a little and it moves with the wind. And
you’d prefer to float away with it.

Abschnitte, wo sich Subkulturen treffen: Am Cemetério dos Elefantes finden sich Alt-Hippies,

de Valores – zu Deutsch Handtasche für Wertsachen – ist Gay-Treffpunkt, am Posto 8 haben
Strassenkinder ihren Platz. Im Gegensatz zum Strand von Ipanema, wo
Gleichgesinnte gezielt zusammenfinden, ist die
Copacabana der Strand für alle. Vor allem für alle,
die es geniessen, sich in einer lebendigen Menge
Badefreudiger zu tummeln, den Surfern bis in den
Sonnenuntergang zuzusehen und endlose Barfussspaziergänge zu machen. Für Besucher ist der
Strand seit der Eröffnung des Hotels Copacabana
Palace 1923 ein Ort von Glamour und Romantik.

has three further sections where sub-cultures
meet. The ageing hippies, the alternative left and
their art scene can be found in “Cemetério dos
Elefantes”. “Bolsa de Valores” – “Handbag for
Valuables” in English – is a gay meeting point, and
street kids have their place in “Posto 8”. In contrast to Ipanema beach, where you can find
like-minded people in groups, Copacabana is the
beach for everyone, above all for everyone who
enjoys splashing about with a lively crowd of
swimmers, watching the surfers until the sun goes
down and taking endless barefoot strolls. For
visitors, the beach has been a place of glamour
and romance since the opening of the “Copacabana Palace” hotel in 1923. For Rio de Janeiro
residents, called “Cariocas”, the beach is simply
the city’s playground, an open, free place which
offers endless pleasures.
From prohibition to cultural heritage
If well-toned bodies form a circle on the beach to
rhythmic music, playing live and unplugged, then
it is worth stopping to watch. You will then witness
a “Roda”, a battle between Capoeira combat dancers. Capoeira was developed by the slaves of African origin in the Brazilian colonial era. They were
thus able to train in hand-to-hand combat in disguise, since it looked to the uninitiated as if it was
simply a dance ritual. The dance martial art is one
of Brazil’s most vibrant cultural treasures. The
schools are open for taster lessons and for people
who are curious and simply want to watch.
Another result of a prohibition which can be observed in the sands of Rio de Janeiro is “Futevolei”,
a mix of volleyball and football. In principle, the
rules of volleyball apply, except that the players

wird dann Zeuge einer Roda, einem Battle zwischen Capoeira-Kampftänzern. Capoeira wurde in
der brasilianischen Kolonialzeit von den afrikanischen Sklaven entwickelt. So konnten sie getarnt
den Nahkampf trainieren, weil es für Uneingeweihte aussah, als handle es sich um ein Tanzritual. Die
Tanzkampfkunst gehört zu den lebendigsten kulturellen Schätzen Brasiliens. Die Schulen sind offen
für Schnupperlektionen oder für Neugierige, die
einfach zusehen wollen. Ebenfalls aus einem Verbot entstanden und im
Sand am Meer von Rio de Janeiro zu beobachten,
ist Futevolei, eine Mischung aus Volleyball und
Fussball. Grundsätzlich gelten die Regeln des Volleyball, ausser dass die Spielenden ihre Hände
nicht benützen dürfen und einen Fussball verwenden. Entwickelt wurde die Sportart 1965 aus dem
Verbot heraus, am Strand Fussball zu spielen. Mittlerweile gibt
es einen Footvolley World Cup. Stadt der guten Mischungen

Die meisten der Cariocas beginnen ihren Tag mit einem frisch­
gepressten Saft aus tropischen
Früchten. Die Bezeichnung Carioca klingt selbst nach einer tropischen Frucht, bedeutet aber
«weisses Haus» in der Sprache
der Ureinwohner, welche die ersten portugiesischen Siedler nach deren Behausungen tauften.
Der Name des Nationalgerichtes stammt aus dem
Portugiesischen: Der Eintopf Feijoada ist von seiner Hauptzutat, der schwarzen Bohne, «feijão»,
abgeleitet. Seine ursprüngliche Form setzte sich
aus dem zusammen, was den afrikanischen Sklaven zu essen erlaubt war: Bohnen, Kohl, Reis,
Maniokmehl und Fleischreste. Im Laufe der Zeit

Rio de Janeiro is also a real “melting pot” for the
palate. You can’t avoid the omnipresent oil, but it

Afro-Portuguese cuisine, added to by immigrants

over time, expanded far beyond the relatively simple art of operating a fryer. Most of the “Cariocas”
start their day with a superb freshly squeezed
tropical fruit juice. The term “Carioca” itself may
sound like a tropical fruit, but it actually means
“white house” in the language of the indigenous
peoples, who named the first Portuguese settlers
after the colour of their dwellings. The title of the
much-loved national dish comes from Portuguese.
The name of the Feijoada stew is derived from its
main ingredient, the “feijão” black bean. In its
original form, the stew is made from what the African slaves were allowed to eat: beans, cabbage,
rice, cassava flour and scraps of meat. Over the
course of time, the stew became very popular with
the working class; today it is served in the best
restaurants as an elaborately prepared speciality.
Currently it is still a delicious bean stew which
includes some ingredients to which the Western
palate is unaccustomed, such as pig’s ear, tail or
trotter. Anyone who is not full after that delight
can indulge in a scrumptious fried banana for
dessert. Then the stage is set for the refreshing
national drink, the Caipirinha, and the batteries
are charged for a night out. Anyone who missed
the Carneval de Rio need not despair. You can
nevertheless visit the centre of the festivities, the
Sambodromo. And don’t worry – there is always
a reason to celebrate in Brazil. By the second evening at the latest you will have met friendly locals
who, with their warm-hearted and cheerful manner, will be openly calling you a “Carioca” or a
“Garota de Ipanema” after the third cocktail.

Was bedeutet für Sie Heimat?
Der Fleck, wo ich aufgewachsen bin. Also das Seeland mit dem schönen Bielersee, dem Frienisberg.
Sie sind also ein Landmensch?
Ja, ich bin in Diessbach, einem 900-Seelen-Dorf,
aufgewachsen. Jetzt wohne ich in einer grösseren
Ortschaft im Seeland, in Lyss. Das ist aber immer
noch auf dem Land. Und flach ist es dort auch!
SC Bern oder EHC Biel?
Wir sind in unserer Jugend öfters den SCB schauen gegangen. Auch einkaufstechnisch bin ich eher
nach Bern orientiert. Aber auch zu Biel besteht
eine Verbundenheit. Gerade vorhin habe ich hier
im nationalen Sportzentrum Magglingen den Rytz
Simon, den Torhüter des EHC Biel getroffen.
Was unterscheidet den Seeländer vom Emmentaler oder dem Berner Oberländer?
Vielleicht sind wir ein bisschen aufgeschlossener.
Das kommt wohl wegen der Nähe zur Romandie.
Vor allem im oberen Seeland, wo meine Freundin
herkommt, herrscht ein bisschen mehr «laisserfaire»-Mentalität.
Sprechen Sie Französisch?
Un petit peu. Ich bin nicht so der Fremdsprachentyp. Mit Englisch könnte ich mich gerade so durchschlagen.
Biel – das Zentrum des Seelands – ist eine sehr
internationale Stadt. Wann gewinnt der erste
Secondo das eidgenössische Schwingfest?

Seeland knows it.
What does your homeland mean to you?
The spot where I grew up. So the Seeland with the
beautiful Lake Biel, the Frienisberg.
So you’re a country boy?
Yes, I grew up in Diessbach, a village with 900
residents. Now I live in a small town in Seeland, in
Lyss, but it’s still in the countryside. And it’s flat
there too!
SC Bern or EHC Biel?
When I was young, we often went to watch SCB.
I lean more towards Bern when it comes to shopping too. But I also have a connection to Biel. I just
ran into Rytz Simon, the goalkeeper for EHC Biel,
here at the National Sports Centre in Magglingen.
What makes people from Seeland different
from people from Emmental or the Bernese
Oberland?
Perhaps we’re a little bit more open-minded. That
probably comes from the proximity to Romandie
[the French-speaking part of Switzerland]. Particularly in Upper Seeland, where my girlfriend
comes from, there’s a bit more of a “laissez-faire”
mentality.
Do you speak French?
Un petit peu. I’m not much of a one for foreign
languages. I can just about muddle along in English.
Biel – the centre of Seeland – is a very international city. When will the first Secondo win the
Swiss Wrestling Festival?
Probably not for a little while. That’s not because
sportsmen with an immigrant background aren’t
welcome in our sport. There are only a few Secondos who wrestle. Perhaps there are some preconceptions on their part. We have a black wrestler, for example, in Cropt Harald from Vaud.
You’re 198 centimetres tall and weigh
150 kilograms. Were you always the biggest
at school?
Yes, when I was 14, I was already taller than our
teacher. On school trips, the bus driver often took
me for the teacher.
Were you teased because of it?
Very little. And when I was, I never defended myself.
A gentle giant?
Yes, sometimes I’m actually a bit too good-natured. I’m not someone who will stop at nothing
for sporting success. For me, the well-being of my
opponent is more important than winning at all
costs.
What is the biggest disadvantage of your build
for you?

Das wird wohl noch ein bisschen dauern. Nicht
etwa, weil Sportler mit Migrationshintergrund bei
uns nicht willkommen wären. Es gibt ein paar wenige Secondos, die schwingen. Vielleicht bestehen
aber auch Vorurteile von ihrer Seite. Mit dem
Waadtländer Cropt Harald haben wir zum Beispiel
auch einen schwarzen Schwinger.
Sie sind 198 Zentimeter gross und 150 Kilogramm schwer. Waren Sie schon in der Schule
immer der Grösste?
Ja, ich war mit 14 Jahren schon grösser als unser
Klassenlehrer. Auf der Schulreise wurde ich vom
Zugkondukteur schon mal für den Lehrer gehalten.
Wurden Sie deswegen gehänselt?
Sehr wenig. Und wenn es vorkam, habe ich mich
nie gewehrt.
Ein sanfter Riese?
Ja, manchmal bin ich sogar ein bisschen zu gutmütig. Ich bin keiner, der für seinen sportlichen
Erfolg über Leichen geht. Mir ist das Wohlergehen
meines Gegners wichtiger, als um jeden Preis zu
gewinnen.
Was ist bei Ihrem Körperbau der grösste
Nachteil?
Man fällt immer auf. Ich kann mich zum Beispiel
nie durch eine Personenmenge schleichen, ohne
dass ich erkannt werde.
Und an Konzerten sind Sie für den, der hinter
Ihnen steht, der Buhmann.
Ich gehe nicht oft an Konzerte. Ich war auch noch
nie an einem Open Air.
Ehrlich? Und dabei hätten Sie mit dem
Hip-Hop-Festival Royal Arena in Orpund eines
unmittelbar vor der Haustüre.
Ich bewege mich nicht so in der Hip-Hop-Szene.
Zudem finden die meisten Open Airs mitten während der Schwingsaison statt. Das ist dann eben
nicht so gäbig.
Böse Zungen behaupten, dass Sie nur wegen
Ihrer Körpermasse erfolgreicher schwingen.
Ohne Technik und nur mit Kraft gewinnt man keine 31 Schwingfeste.
Okay, wir haben verstanden. Wie beschwerlich
ist Fliegen für Sie?
Bei kurzen Strecken habe ich keine Probleme. Ich
schaue, dass ich beim Notausgang sitzen kann.
Als ich meinen Kollegen und Schweizer Eishockeyprofi Mark Streit in Philadelphia besuchte, bin ich
in der Business Class geflogen. Das ging dann auch
problemlos.
Waren Sie da zum ersten Mal in den USA?
Zum zweiten Mal. Das erste Mal lud mich mein
Götti als Geschenk zu meiner Konfirmation zu sich
nach Minneapolis ein. Mit dem Auto cruisten wir
nach Las Vegas, Los Angeles und San Francisco.
Leider ist für einen 16-Jährigen in den USA noch
vieles verboten, was Spass macht.
Wo wollen Sie unbedingt mal noch hin?
Ui, Malediven oder Seychellen, sägeni geng.

You’re always obvious. For example, I can never
sneak quietly through a crowd without being
recognised.
And at concerts you’re the bogeyman for
anyone standing behind you.
I don’t often go to concerts. I’ve never been to an
open-air festival either.
Really? And when we have one right on
the doorstep with the “Royal Arena” hip hop
festival in Orpund.
I’m not really that much into the hip hop scene. In
addition, most of the open-air festivals happen
during the wrestling season. That doesn’t work
too well for me either. I just don't have time for
everything.
Your detractors say that you’re only successful
in wrestling because of your build.
I would say to them that without technique and
with only power you can’t win 31 wrestling festivals.
Okay, we understand that. How difficult is
flying for you?
On short flights I don’t really have much of a problem. I make sure that I can always sit by the emergency exit. That’s much more comfortable. When
I visited my friend, the Swiss ice hockey professional Mark Streit, in Philadelphia, I flew business
class. That went off without a hitch too.
Was that the first time you’ve visited the USA?
It was actually the second time. The first time was
when my godfather invited me to Minneapolis as
a confirmation present. We went on a road trip to
Las Vegas, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Unfortunately there are a lot of fun things that 16-yearolds aren’t allowed to do in the United States.
Where would you really like
to visit?
Uh, the Maldives or the Seychelles,
I would say.
What stands in the way?
Surely money can’t be the issue
for you as a top class wrestler?
It’s not so easy at all with our twoyear-old boy. If my family and I
had to live only on my income from
wrestling, then it would be pretty
difficult. But I work as a driver for
Lüthi & Portmann Fleischwaren
AG in Münchenbuchsee 60 percent of the time. That makes it
easier financially and will also
make it much easier to get back
into the working world after my
sports career is over. Almost everyone in the amateur sport of wrestling is forced to work to make
ends meet.
Would you like to work as a forester again?
I’ve been out of that job for ten years now. That’s
a long time. I had a tibia injury, which is why I’m

Was steht dem im Weg? Geld spielt bei Ihnen
als Spitzenschwinger ja keine Rolle, oder?
Mit unserem zweijährigen Buben ist das nicht mehr
so einfach. Wenn meine Familie und ich nur von
meinen Einnahmen als Schwinger leben würden,
müssten wir sehr gut rechnen. Deswegen arbeite
ich 60 Prozent als Chauffeur für die Lüthi & Portmann Fleischwaren AG in Münchenbuchsee. So
fällt es auch leichter, nach der Sportkarriere in der
Arbeitswelt wieder Fuss zu fassen. Im Amateursport Schwingen gehört es sich fast, zu arbeiten.
Wollen Sie mal wieder als Forstwart arbeiten?
Ich bin jetzt zehn Jahre weg von dem Beruf. Das
ist eine lange Zeit. Ich hatte eine Verletzung am
Schienbein, deshalb suchte ich einen ruhigeren
Job. Im Militär absolvierte ich die Lastwagenprüfung. Ich bin enorm dankbar einen kulanten Chef
gefunden zu haben, der mir die Chance gibt, zu
bestimmten Zeiten zu trainieren.
Welche Schwingfeste sind heuer Ihre Höhepunkte?
Sicher das Berner Kantonale, das in Seedorf vor
meiner Haustür im Seeland stattfindet. Und das
Schwägalp-Schwingen am Säntis, das einzige
Bergfest, das ich noch nicht gewonnen habe.
Stucki Christian (*10.1. 1985) ist
mit seiner Grösse von 198 Zentimetern und einem Kampfgewicht
von 150 Kilogramm eine imposante
Erscheinung. In Diessbach bei
Büren im Berner Seeland aufgewachsen, lebt er heute mit seiner

And the Schwägalp-Schwingen [Schwägalp Wrestling] in Säntis, the only mountain festival that I

Manchmal ist es nur der Rhythmus der Strasse, in
der Altstadt, in den Wohnvierteln, der den Sound
ausmacht: Aus allen Ecken kommen Geräusche.
Nachbarn unterhalten sich von einem Garten zum
anderen, ein Händler preist lautstark warme Bohnen an, ein anderer Kinderspielzeug, ein weiterer
kann Matratzen reparieren. Hunde bellen dagegen
an, Fernseher krächzen dazwischen. Diese bunte
Klangvielfalt widerspiegelt sich in den verschiedenen Musikstilen und Musikformationen, die
Kuba hervorgebracht hat und immer noch hervorbringt. Sie kann man hören in kleinen Bars und
grossen Clubs, in denen jede Nacht die besten
Musikerinnen und Musiker aus Kuba mit Livekonzerten ihren Lebensunterhalt verdienen. Kenner der Szene ist der Schweizer Roger Furrer.
Er ist so etwas wie der Latinokönig der Schweiz
und Gründer des Caliente!-Festivals, das jeden
Sommer Hunderttausende nach Zürich lockt. Lateinamerikanische Musik ist seine Leidenschaft.
2001 gelang es ihm, in Havanna ein gigantisches
Open-Air-Festival zu veranstalten. Zu gerne hätte
er das Festival damals weitergeführt, doch immer
neue Auflagen der Behörden und zu hohe Geldforderungen machten die Pläne zunichte. Doch er
gab nicht auf, suchte das Gespräch, überzeugte
mit Gelassenheit und viel Geduld – und wurde
belohnt: Im März 2016 darf er in Havanna sein
eigenes Caliente!-Festival durchführen. Eine kleine
Sensation in einem Land, wo sonst westliche Man­
ager nichts zu sagen haben. «Natürlich werden
auch viele Caliente!-Fans aus der Schweiz anreisen», sagt Furrer. «Und wenn man schon einmal
dort ist, darf man sich die tollen Bands, die gross­
Havana,” writes the Cuban-French author Alejo
Capentier, “offer a constant performance: theatre,
caricatures, drama, comedy or whatever.” Sometimes it’s just the rhythm of the streets, in the old
town and in the residential districts, which makes
up the sound – noise comes from all corners.
Neighbours entertain themselves from one garden
to another, traders loudly praise their warm beans,
others extol children’s toys, another can repair
mattresses. Dogs bark against this background;
televisions crackle in between. This colourful range
of sounds is reflected in the various styles of music and music groups which Cuba has produced
and continues to produce. You can hear them in
small bars and big clubs, in which the best musicians from Cuba earn their livelihood with live
concerts every night. Swiss national Roger Furrer knows the scene. He’s
thus a bit like the Latino king of Switzerland and
founded the Caliente! Festival, which draws hundreds of thousands of people to Zurich every summer. Latin-American music is his passion. In 2001
he was able to organise a massive open-air festival in Havana. He would have liked to continue
running the festival, but ever more constraints
from the authorities and too high financial costs
brought the plans to nothing. But he didn’t give
up, sought discussions, convinced people by using
his composure and plenty of patience – and was
rewarded. Havana will have its own Caliente! Festival in March 2016. A minor sensation in a country
where Western businesspeople are not active in
other areas. “Of course plenty of Caliente! fans will
also travel across from Switzerland,” says Furrer.

beim jüngeren Publikum, tönt er aus vielen Wohnungen bis in die frühen Morgenstunden hinaus
auf die Strassen. Das ist aber auch gut so, denn
«vor Mitternacht» so Roger Furrer, «ist im Club
nichts los.»

clubs.” The nightlife runs riot particularly in Vedado and in the old town inland from the Malecón
waterfront promenade. Here you can find one of
two Casa de la Música, where a different band
plays every night and the huge dance hall heats
up. Here, in what was a cinema in Centro, famous
bands such as Los Van Van and La Charanga
Habanera perform. You can hear traditional styles
such as Son, Salsa and Mambo. But also Reggaeton, or Reguetón, a mix of reggae, dancehall,
hip-hop and salsa. Extremely hip with the young
audience, it plays from many apartments out onto
the streets until the early hours of the morning.
This is a good thing, since “there’s nothing happening in the clubs before midnight” according to
Roger Furrer.

Wie lange brauchten Sie, um eine Bewilligung für ein
Caliente!-Festival auf Kuba zu bekommen?
Eigentlich ein Vierteljahrhundert mit der ganzen
Vorarbeit. 1990 startete die Zusammenarbeit mit
der kubanischen Regierung mit den einheimischen
Bands Moncada und Los Van Van. Für das Fest,
welches jetzt stattfindet, dauerte es ein Jahr.
Warum war das so schwierig?
Ausländer dürfen in Kuba keine öffentlichen Events
veranstalten. Die Regierung kontrolliert alles. Die
Behörden kennen aber Caliente! und unser langjähriges
Engagement für die kubanische Musik. Dies half,
die Bewilligung zu erhalten.

Basically 25 years with all the preparatory work. The
collaboration with the Cuban government started in
1990 with the local bands Moncada and Los Van Van.
For the festival which is happening now it took a year.
Why was it so difficult?
Foreigners can’t organise any public events in Cuba.
The state controls everything. But the authorities
know Caliente! and our many years of commitment
to Cuban music. That helped us get permission.
What should we expect from Caliente in Cuba?
Plenty of great live music from the big Salsa and
Timba orchestras through to the new Reggaeton
generation. We combine the music with painting and
sculpture which is at a very high level in Cuba.

A321/320 aircraft of SWISS
will serve Edelweiss

Langstreckenmaschinen A330-200 und A330-300 mit
um­gebauten Kabinen unterwegs. Die neue Business Class
von Edelweiss verfügt nun über Fully Lie-Flat-Sitze, die sich
in zwei Meter lange Betten verwandeln lassen. Optimaler
Komfort, exzellenter Service und das neue Unterhaltungssystem mit den grossen 16» HD Touchscreens garantieren
einen unvergesslichen Flug. Dank der neu eingeführten
Economy Max kommen die Fluggäste nun in den Genuss
von mehr Platz und weiteren Annehmlichkeiten. Auch die
Economy Class wurde mit neuen Sitzen und einem neuen
Unterhaltungssystem mit Touchscreens aufgerüstet.
The focus of Edelweiss is on innovation and state-of-the-art
technology. Since June 2014, the refurbished cabins of the
A330-300 and A330-200 aircraft offer a more comfortable
interior on Edelweiss long-haul flights. The new Edelweiss
Business Class features fully lie-flat seats that can be converted into two-metre long beds. Optimal comfort, excellent
service and a new in-flight entertainment system with large
16-inch HD touch screens ensure a superior travel experience. In the new Economy Max, Edelweiss passengers can
enjoy more space and several other amenities. What is more,
new seats and a new in-flight entertainment system, including
touch screens, ensure greater comfort in Economy Class.
