Since I only have this page, I’ll cut right to the chase. All businesses or sports encounter peaks and valleys; we are definitely seeing the latter. The National Golf Foundation reported that 200,000 players age 35 and younger “abandoned the game” last year. That age bracket represents 25% of this country’s golf population. Another 200,000 in all other demographics also hung up the clubs. The 462 million rounds played last year in the United States marks the fewest number of rounds played since right before the golf boom in 1995. So, how do we keep this critical age group from leaving the sport of golf permanently? Several top groups in the industry work day and night to develop creative concepts, plans, and programs to keep the sport growing as well as to put a fresh face on an old two iron. Many of you may have heard of and maybe even played on a course that use 15-inch holes on occasion. Traditionalists and even some of my golf buddies reject ideas like this one even though the local muni they play may be forced to close without growing the sport. On the other hand, I look forward to playing the game with larger cups. Heaven knows after nearly 50 years of playing, it would be nice to have another chance to shoot my career round! I agree with any idea that lets new players enjoy the game more, and the PGA Task Force sees no problem with providing beginners with equipment that makes the game easier and more inviting. In another attempt to attract new players and retain old ones, a pilot program has been implemented in the Midwest that utilizes time clocks along with a fee structure that charges golfers by the minute rather than by the hole. This program allows consumers with limited time or recreational budgets to fit golf into their schedules and make it more affordable. Even though golf is often considered a too-expensive sport, 90% of games in the U.S. are played on public courses at an average of $28 per round. Probably because I do not fall into that 18 to 35 age bracket, I didn’t foresee the arrival of FootGolf, a phenomenon that combines soccer and golf using a 21-inch hole and a soccer ball. Since January, FootGolf has spread from 25 golf courses in ten states to nearly 150 courses in 31 states. I can hear David Feherty now, “He’s got about 50 yards in and he shoots and…Hooooooooole!” Little did I know when I started playing this great sport that one day I would work in the industry and be directly affected by the popularity of the game. To answer the earlier question – how to keep golfers from leaving the sport – the sport must change. Change, an always difficult thing to accept in any part of life, just makes us uneasy whether through moving, buying a new car, or starting a new job. As Bob Dylan would sing, “the times, they are a-changin’.” I’ve always liked that song. 2 G O L FG U I D E I N C. CO M FA L L 2 0 1 4 3 Cover Story Cover Story Bowling Green Country Club ~ Where North Meets South trait of the North Course, a dry drainage creek, comes into play on no less than eight holes. Nick Ciattei About 75 miles from the Mason– Dixon line, the North and South actually do sit side by side. Here though, just a row of pine trees separates them. I’m referring to Bowling Green North and South, two championship 18-hole golf courses that have a history that could rival any previous battles fought in the region. The North – Hole 4 Par 3 Shenandoah Valley area is blessed with some breathtaking landscapes, and not many match those at Bowling Green Country Club. The 36-hole combo differs as do the North and South. Two distinctly different courses cohabitate here. Bowling Green Country Club’s formula has always delivered quality golf at a decent tariff. Shenandoah Valley golf legend Lynwood Morrison established that recipe when he developed the courses in the mid 1980s and early 90s. The North Course opened in 1984, and even though several changes have been made, the layout remains very playable and lots of fun. Measuring in at just less than 6500 yards from the tips, Bowling Green–North is no pushover with tight fairways and moderately sized greens. The par 71 features several lakes and North – Hole 16 Par 5 towering willows. The plain–Jane 170-yard par 3 fourth has been modified from Morrison’s original design to transform it into an exciting, bulk-headed island green hole. On eight, another nice par 3, a large pond protects the entire left side of the green, whose subtle dips can become a setup for some tough pin placements. A true risk-reward hole, the par 5 ninth (pictured on the cover) requires a drive from an elevated tee to a tight landing area. The second shot must carry a pond and the layup area narrows, adding to the challenge. Characterized by tricky undulating greens, several short par 4s punctuate the back nine on North Course. Level par is a good score on two long par 3s on the inward nine. The other noteworthy 4 G O L FG U I D E I N C. CO M Known for its abundantly sized greens and wider fairways, Bowling Green–South’s very playable length, somewhat shorter than its older sibling at a tick under 6000 yards, makes it a favorite among South – Hole 7 Par 4 seniors and women. Many also love the South course because it lacks hazards, which gives one a good chance to finish with the same ball you started. Better skilled players still find enough on the table to keep things interesting, especially the closing holes. A couple of short par 4s on the front nine of this par 70 can be reached by the big hitters. The back nine at Bowling Green–South heats up with a tough stretch starting at the fourteenth, a par 4 well known for its roller coaster fairway. Two more treacherous par 4s follow. I’ve always found fifteen to be just plain difficult from tee to green. Sixteen, the longest of the lot tipping in at 450 yards, will wow you with stunning views of the valley and Blue Ridge Mountains. One major change at Bowling Green occurred when Wingfield Golf Properties took over the facility’s management at the start of the year. Wingfield also manages South Riding and Pleasant Valley in Northern Virginia as well as The Club at Viniterra in New Kent. They have already improved both courses’ accompanying facilities throughout. General Manager Adam Engley says that the transition with members and daily fee players has been very smooth, and that many have noticed the changes being made. Engley notes that longtime Bowling Green Superintendent David Lewallen remains on board. “We feel David has always done a great job with the golf course, and now with the new resources provided, he’s very excited about where the courses FA L L 2 0 1 4 North – Hole 2 Par 4 5 Cover Story are going.” A complete bunker renovation will wrap up in early 2015 on the South Course, and a cart path improvement project will begin next year. A new fleet of golf carts that will be added to both courses will surely excite golfers. Expect new and better merchandise at each of the pro shops, both of which have also received major faceSouth – Hole 15 Par 4 lifts. Over on the range, which will be converted to Bermuda grass this fall, look for new balls and targets. Besides those upgrades for the players, a new tournament series including Night Golf events has been added. Bowling Green Country Club has always been recognized as one of the premier banquet and wedding facilities in the entire valley with two separate large clubhouses at each course. Wingfield immediately noticed that the infrastructures and features of both buildings needed repair. Engley said “The North Ballroom South – Hole 16 Par 4 is being renovated with new flooring and painting, and we installed new heating and air conditioning units in both.” One thing this writer noticed in the South Clubhouse was the brighter and happier Grillroom! Several new HD TVs can also be spotted at both complexes. Engley also saw the need to freshen up the website’s appearance with a new look and advancements like online tee times and a new E-Club. Finally, along with those physical upgrades, Engley has vowed that customers will see greatly enhanced customer service, and he has assembled a staff to help Bowling Green achieve that goal. He brings long-time friend Rob Howells in as head pro. The two worked together at Goose Creek in Leesburg. Leah Ferezan, a George Mason graduate with a BS in tourism and events, has been named the new marketing and sales director. The former chef of the Piccadilly Public House in Winchester, Jamie Gulden, has been recruited. His first line of business will be to overhaul the food and beverage department. Bowling Green Country Club has entered a new chapter in what is already a successful and memorable one for many who have played a round of golf or maybe had their wedding reception or class reunion there. The North and South form a solid golf duo, and with new management firmly entrenched, it should be an exciting time to be on the border! Steinheimer’s lounge’s unique spot overlooks The Lost Quarry Pools including a separate cigar lounge. Wes Bolyard Each of La Cantera’s two golf options, the Resort Course and the Palmer Course, boast separate magnificent clubhouses. The Resort’s basic straight Palmer Hole 4 layout runs through a valley where the fairways roll toward the center, which differs from the Palmer Course’s ridgeline locale with several blind shots, more elevation changes, and high-centered fairways. San Antonio has mystically drawn me back ever since my first visit in the 1970s. This power may have been hidden in my first bite of a pumpkin empanada or the beautiful Riverwalk or the visit to the five missions along mission trail. The area north and slightly west of La Cantera Resort downtown San Antonio, along the Balcones Escarpment, is known as Hill Country. Perched atop 65 acres with a commanding view of the surrounding countryside sits the Westin La Cantera Hill Country Resort, a AAA Four Diamond award winning property. Built as if it were a Spanish presidio fortress of old that provided protection and comfort or a Franciscan mission that offered cool refreshment and a place of refuge, the needs of modern day travelers are more than met. From your initial greeting upon arrival, you realize that hospitality is the number one priority here! Heading into its fourteenth year, after a recent 12-million dollar renovation of its 508 guest rooms, the resort’s design blends the classic elements of its South Texas history with the sophistication of today’s Texas. Activities abound for all members of the family. Choose from two golf courses, six swimming areas, nature walks, tennis courts, a marvelous spa, scrumptious dining, and nearby shopping. Casita Village’s additional 38 guest rooms in eleven casitas were inspired by legendary Texans who helped shape and settle the land with their large ranches. Its own green, private complex is just a few hundred yards from the main resort but worlds apart in scale and atmosphere. The cottages surround a beautifully landscaped courtyard housing a pool and Jacuzzi. During your stay, each casita includes a golf cart to ease access between the village and main resort. Enjoy fine dining at Francesca’s that features South Texas cuisine with a Southwestern flair to bring you distinctive, profound flavors. They partnered with Uncertain Farms and other South Texas ranchers and farmers to feature locally and naturally nurtured produce, buffalo, quail, antelope, and Akaushi beef. Brannon’s Café offers a casual, yet festive atmosphere with a variety of regionally inspired Resort Hole 7 8 Opened in 1995, Resort quickly became one of America’s best new courses, and it previously hosted the Texas Valero Open for 15 years. On one of the more fun holes, seven, the fairway overlooks the Six Flags Fiesta Texas roller coaster. The tee shot drops 80 feet to a slight dogleg right fairway protected by bunkers on both sides and a lake running up the right side – what fun! Another exciting hole, the downhill par-4 twelfth, is guarded by church-pew bunkers on the left, a dropoff on the right, and a fairway that ends in a creek. A natural rock outcropping waterfall fronts the picturesque green and empties into the creek, which can be dangerous because it is narrow and shallow with bunkers behind it. Prior to or after your round, satisfy your lunch cravings at the La Cantera Grill. Also located here, the Academy at La Cantera, a state-of-the-art facility, offers a wide range of individual and corporate programs to insure improvement at any skill or age level. Palmer, which opened in 2001, fulfills every desired challenge: elevated tees, elevated greens, doglegs both right and left, tree lined fairways, ravines to cross, beautiful limestone cliffs, rock outcroppings, and water. With many interesting holes here, I favor number ten. Stay left off the tee as the fairway slants right and drops off about 40 feet on the right. The course’s high point lies on the back tee of number 11, which offers a commanding view to downtown San Antonio. On the signature par-3 fourth hole, Arnold Palmer dedicated the unique bridge to the green to his late wife, Winnie, who was Palmer’s “heart and soul.” After your round of golf, grab lunch at the Palmer Grille that overlooks the eighteenth green. Choose from an array of spa treatments including massage therapy, manicures, pedicures, and facials. The 7,600-square-foot Westin workout fitness center adjacent to the spa holds strength training equipment as well as cardiovascular machines for those seeking a more rigorous routine. To add more excitement to your stay, not quite like golf but still with the thrill of trying to hit a target, visit the Joshua Creek Ranch. Located about 45 minutes northwest of San Antonio and sitting on more than 13,000 acres, the ranch occupies a uniquely diverse terrain. Miles of the Joshua Creek and Guadalupe River bottomlands are planted in fields of grain crops for prime pheasant hunting habitat and quail hunting cover. Densely wooded areas are conducive to Texas Whitetail and Axis deer hunting. I recall how each member of our large traveling golf group applauded and enjoyed the layout created by the Ault, Clark and Associates team. Now, some 20 years later, Mountain View boasts being one of the most popular and best-valued courses in that South Central Pennsylvania area. The first nine holes at Mountain View opened in 1978, and the second nine debuted in 1987. As you might expect, the two 9-hole layouts differ distinctly from one another. More than 60 bunkers and several lakes put the premium on accuracy over the path of the 6400-yard excursion. Its name best describes the course’s Hole 6 Par 4 landscape. Mountain View’s opulent background of the Catoctin Mountains’ lofty hills surround a relatively flat course. Exceptional playability and great conditioning distinguishes Mountain View from other golf clubs along with very reasonable golf rates. Players continuously rate the greens as some of the smoothest and quickest in the region. The front nine is considered more open when compared to the longer, occasionally tree-lined, back nine. Spread across an exposed pasture with just golf holes for the eyes to see, I believe the outward nine plays a stroke or two easier than the back side. A series of shorter par 4s early on the Mountain View front give players decent scoring opportunities Hole 8 Par 5 to get the round going in the right direction. Play the tee shot of the pretty tough par 4 first hole down the right side for your best angle to attack the green. Keep the tee ball down the left side on the second hole as the fairway bends to the right. Fairway bunkers are found on every hole on the front side except the sixth, where a couple of ponds tighten the fairway on this gentle dogleg left. Many big hitters can get home in two on the only par 5 on the front, the eighth, that measures just 476 yards. The red maintenance barn at Mountain View, which Old MacDonald could have called home, performs as a nostalgic backdrop on the fifth and the ninth, both par 4s. The inward nine contrasts sharply to the prairie-like setting of the first nine holes at Mountain View. You will find more elevation changes, several tree-lined holes, and more water, plus it plays some 200 yards longer. Golf aficionados will tell you that the first four Hole 11 Par 4 holes on the back side present the course’s more difficult pursuits. Ten and eleven are par 4s with the latter rated the number one handicap hole on the course. The green here is nestled in a wooded Hole 15 Par 4 area, which contradicts anything Hole 16 Par 3 you have played thus far. The lovely par 3 twelve is draped in woodlands, while water comes into play left of the green on the fun-to-play, downhill par 5 thirteenth. The rest of the nine brings more trees into play, which is quite evident on the short par 3 sixteenth where branches almost overhang the putting surface. Mountain View’s closer, an awesome riskreward par 5, has a pond to the right of the green that finds many approach shots, including a three-wood I really thought I nutted. But alas, it found a watery grave. Some say first impressions last the longest. Golfers can immediately perceive the pre-Civil War farmhouse that serves as the clubhouse at Mountain View. The historical site welcomed an adjoining Grill-Pavilion several years back that is an excellent between-nines or post-round watering hole now that it has its liquor license. Sit back and toss back a cold one as you overlook the ninth, tenth, and eighteenth holes. Other golfer-friendly features include a large natural grass practice facility, frequent player programs, and the popular unlimited afternoon play after 2 p.m. Overall, golfers will find a fair, challenging, and gratifying course that has been rated four stars by Golf Digest. The owners report great numbers for the 2014 campaign, a testament to the conditions and everyday fine rates. Mountain View Golf Club, located just minutes from the historic Gettysburg battlefields, can be easily accessed from Harrisburg, Baltimore, Washington, Hagerstown, and other points. Being an easy day trip to an unspoiled area, you can get away from it all and just take in “the view.” For more information visit mtviewgc.com 34 G O L FG U I D E I N C. CO M FA L L 2 0 1 4 37 Feature Story Feature Story The Club at Viniterra ~ Fruit of the Vine Nick Ciattei Since the mid-Atlantic Golf Boom settled down nearly a decade ago, we have not seen nearly as many golf course openings. The ones we have seen seem to have been well-thought out, and most have taken years to complete. Rees Jones created a masterpiece at one of the newest courses in the Old Dominion, The Club at Viniterra in New Hole 1 Par 4 Kent, Virginia. Viniterra’s private, gated estate community is located just off the I-64 interstate in close proximity to Richmond as well as Williamsburg. Since the word “Viniterra” means earth wines or land of grapes, naming the 1,200-acre development makes perfect sense considering that the award-winning New Kent Winery, which has already become a staple in the Virginia wine community, also anchors the community. Both the golf course and winery welcome guests daily to one of the most beautiful parts of the state. Most know that Rees Jones is dubbed “The Open Doctor.” He has earned that title for his work redesigning courses to prepare them for major championships. But Jones is also recognized for his original designs, and Virginia appears to be one of his favorite places to showcase his craft. Besides The Club at Viniterra, his work Hole 3 Par 3 in the Commonwealth includes the Green Course at Golden Horseshoe and Stoney Creek at Wintergreen. The entire golf course at Viniterra basically lies right there in front of you. With multiple tee boxes and varying tee lengths, the course can surely please the palate of any golfer. You won’t find any blind shots, and the course never feels claustrophobic with ample room everywhere! Every player will enjoy The Club at Viniterra’s layout that can also handle a big name event. The course measures at 5200 yards from the forward tees all the way to 7725 yards from the professional tees, which forms the longest golf course in Virginia. Fairways average from 30 to 40 yards wide with ample rough areas making it a really difficult task to lose a golf ball. Thirteen bridges are used to route the course through a mature, dense forest. The run-up areas to huge green complexes along with Jones’ large sculptured bunkering – 81 traps in all – adds to the challenge. to the front in length and structure. His simple testament to old style golf architecture reveals a vintage test of golf. Hole twelve on the back nine plays to an elevated fairway, as do many of the par 4s at Viniterra, so don’t expect a lot of roll. This long course plays that way. Two more stimulating par threes, fifteen and seventeen, can Hole 17 Par 3 be played from different angles and from up to 12 different teeing grounds. Amazing topography found in this part of Virginia graces your back nine journey. The closing par 4 displays a golf rarity and features a striking tee shot over the “only” forced carry water hazard on the entire layout. After your round of golf, you must visit the New Kent Winery. The winery is housed in a 12,000-squarefoot structure made almost entirely out of recycled building materials. Pine trusses and floor timbers dating back to the 1800s give this winery an ambience that goes hand-in-hand with the founders’ sense of commitment to winemaking fundamentals and the environment. Natural comrades, wine and golf fit together quite nicely here. Other planned amenities include an equestrian complex, several lakes with walking trails and picnic areas, and a swim and racquet club. Another exciting addition will also be the Mirbeau Country Inn and Spa. The award-winning inn and spa is under contract to build a 62 room lodge, restaurant, bistro style café, and conference center all within walking distance of the golf course and winery. Mirbeau is one of only three resort properties in North America to receive four star ratings for all three main categories: the inn, the fine dining, and the spa. An ideal “on the way” course when heading south or to the beach, The Club at Viniterra makes an excellent companion to the Williamsburg golf scene. Clear space on your golf calendar to play this divine winner. The front nine at The Club at Viniterra opens with a straightaway par 4 that further attests to its expansive playing field. Jones’ craftsmanship really shows up on all of the par 3s, starting with the third, which can play as long as 233 yards. As many of you now know, Dick’s Sporting Goods fired hundreds of PGA professionals. PGA officials reported that Dick’s possibly laid off more than 500 PGA-certified employees in their stores’ golf division. “It’s tragic,” said Will Mann, past PGA of America president. Mann, now program director of the Coastal Carolina University PGA Golf Management Program who helps produce new PGA pros, continued by saying that “they were the largest single employer of PGA professionals in the country; that’s why it was so stunning.” The pros provided Dick’s with golf equipment sales, club fitting, repair, and instruction. A news release from Dick’s reported “significant weakness in golf” sales and said the company has lowered its full-year earnings outlook to reflect a “continuation of negative trends in golf.” According to the release, Golf Galaxy, which was acquired by Dick’s in 2007, saw a 10.4 percent sales decrease in Dick’s stores. The PGA has vowed to help the displaced employees iron out what to do next. The U.S. Golf Manufacturers Anti-Counterfeiting Working Group (The Golf Group) has recently announced the successful raids of five China-based counterfeiting targets. The operations, which were executed by Chinese law enforcement with the assistance of the Golf Group, resulted in the seizure of nearly 90,000 counterfeit golf products and continued the momentum that the Golf Group and Chinese authorities have built toward stopping the spread of fakes. “Every raid that we carry out saves a countless number of consumers from being duped into purchasing fake clubs,” said Rawleigh Grove, vice president and general counsel for PING. “This sends a strong message to those who produce fakes that we will continue to work with the proper authorities to find manufacturers and ensure that their potentially dangerous products never reach the public.” “These fake products come at a cost to everyone involved with the sport of golf,” said Brian Lynch, senior vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary for Callaway. “We are committed to doing everything in our power to help Chinese law enforcement so it can in turn help us uphold the integrity of one of the world’s greatest sports.” More information about the dangers of counterfeit golf clubs and products, and how to avoid them, can be found at www.keepgolfreal.com. (Bottle Odor) flexrsports.com I had never heard of this type of B.O. A quick search for water “B”ottle “O”dor on Google returned a slew of queries on solving this issue. Seems some sports water bottles, whether you are biking, jogging, or taking in a day on the links, develop an odor from the drink inside. The FLEXR bottle aims to solve the problem by avoiding it in the first place. You can imagine after a long day of baking in the golf cart, a reusable bottle will develop the P.Us. Most often we just go out and buy a new one. FLEXR uses a disposable inner liner to rid the residue and stinky odor that comes from leftover moisture. Just give the flexible plastic bottle a squeeze and the liner shrinks as you drink. Athletes designed this new product for athletes, and it’s made in the USA. Most new golf bags like mine have handy places for you to store your water bottles, and the FLEXR has found a home in mine. Time to prevent going O.B. with B.O. William Thompson Company developed the Thompson Tee with Hydro-Shield Sweatproof Technology that uses a proprietary barrier that protect shirts from those unsightly blotches and an anti-microbial to block odors. But here’s the best part! When I wore the Thompson Tee for the first time this summer, I stayed cooler and my normal aggravated sweat patterns were definitely knocked down a notch or two. Made from 100% cotton and velvety soft to the touch, the Thompson Tee comes in crewneck, V-neck, and deep V-neck styles for men and scoop-neck for women and comes in both white and black. So, when you hit The Pill off center, it will wobble and roll at a curve. At first, I thought The Pill was strictly for putting but soon realized you can use it for all shots – full, chip, or putt. A couple of bigname PGA Tour players named Garcia and Senden now practice with The Pill. The biggest challenge for golfers will be to get used to the modified ball itself. (Ciattei) FA L L 2 0 1 4 43 Golf Destination Golf Destination Harrisonburg, Virginia ~ It’s Better in the ‘Burg Nick Ciattei My first visit to the Harrisonburg, VA, area was in the late 1970s. A budding broadcasting career took me down Interstate-81 for one of my first radio interviews. I recall thinking how nice and quaint this college town was. Fast forward 40 years, and now you find a city that has grown wisely by keeping its downtown charm while still expanding into one of Virginia’s most sought after regions. The county seat of Rockingham County, the ‘Burg, as locals refer to it, nestles between the Alleghany and Blue Ridge Mountains. In fact, the town was previously called Rocktown. It was renamed in honor of Thomas Harrison, one of the first English settlers to the area. James Madison and Eastern Mennonite Universities, as well as nearby Bridgewater College, all of whom call Harrisonburg home, gain respect in fields of higher education in the Commonwealth. Now, golf plays a big role in the tourism industry. Several relatively new courses have been added to some classic ones to make Harrisonburg an outstanding golf destination. Two wonderful 18-hole golf courses certainly make Lakeview Golf Club the anchor when it comes to golf in the ‘Burg. The most challenging of the courses, Mountianview, brings the Mountain and Spring nines together. Several demanding water hazards and dramatic towering hardwoods. The pleasant wander through its park setting results in delightful play. Large tee box and green complexes delivers a challenging yet fair test of golf. Don’t be lulled into thinking the shorter distance is a pushover. A trip around the course from the tips will prove quite different. The city can definitely be proud of this par 70, one of the finest exclusively public golf courses the state has to offer. Developer Jeff Forbes left no stone unturned when he created Packsaddle Ridge Golf Club. Forbes along with architect Russell Breeden garnered immediate praise when this stunner opened up in 2002. Set into a mountainside, this 18-hole championship course offers one-of-a-kind views of the valley. A very tough layout from start to finish is softened only by the incredible nature that surrounds you. The four year long project required a million tons of rock and three quarters of a million tons of top soil to be moved. Don’t be surprised if you run into a multitude of wildlife on this golf adventure. Make sure to sign the giant poster board in the beautiful clubhouse that overlooks much of the course. Packsaddle Ridge will leave a lasting impression on anyone’s golf game. Several courses located just outside the county also add to the attraction of Harrisonburg as an ideal locale to plan a golf trip with your buddies. The Shenvalee Golf Resort just up the interstate in New Market has always been known as a destination of its own. Their 27 very playable holes fit perfectly when scheduling your itinerary. Shenvalee commands one of the most historic and beautiful golf settings in the state. The three nines create what many in the area call the “Feel Good” course in the valley. Lakeview Mountain elevation changes come into play throughout the nearly 7000-yard tract. Breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains may also play havoc with a golfer’s concentration. The Lakeview course, which is very walker friendly, provides large landing Lakeview Spring areas on wide rolling fairways, many greenside bunkers, and subtle undulating greens. Both solid tests of golf give you the opportunity to play the 36-hole combo in one day. You would never guess that the four nines here were all designed by different builders because they blend together so nicely. You can depend on outstanding conditions and friendly service, always a staple at Lakeview Golf Club. Heritage Oaks Shenvalee The City of Harrisonburg actually operates a terrific course just a driver and 9 iron from downtown. Heritage Oaks Golf Course, designed by Bill Love, incorporates two very distinct characteristics. CO M FA L L 2 0 1 4 Packsaddle 45 Golf Destination Accommodations & Packages AP If you have not noticed a running theme among all of these courses, the Shenandoah Valley takes center stage. While quietly tucked away in the mountains, Bryce Resort may not put the views of the valley on display, but your senses will not be let down at all. Ed Ault designed this 18-hole course on the eastern side of Great North Bryce Mountain. Pleasing and picturesque from start to finish, Bryce, a hidden gem well worth the short drive off the interstate, should be part of your swing through the valley. Staunton, a city south of Harrisonburg, features another one of the state’s most notable golf courses. Ingleside Golf Club opened in 1928, and even though the on-site resort shut down years ago, golfers from all across the valley still enjoy this unique layout. Tree-lined fairways set across rolling hills with no significant water hazards make this wellIngleside maintained course very player friendly. Other courses that could be included in a golf stay in Harrisonburg include the two layouts at Massanutten Resort, the multi-course Wintergreen facility, and the Club at Ironwood. Now, if you’re going to take a golf trip, you need to have nice hotels to go along with lots of gastronomical choices and decent watering holes. Fine lodging abounds and Harrisonburg’s thriving downtown offers many locally owned restaurants and pubs. Since 2004, the downtown historical district has completed a 360° turnaround with regional government support bringing back a cosmetically pleasing showcase. If you have some extra time off the links, you can always visit some Civil War battlefields or the region’s famous caverns. But we think you’ll spend most of your time at the excellent golf courses here. Being located along Interstate 81 and easily accessible from all of the major east coast hubs makes the ‘Burg a happening golf destination! Year-over-year golf equipment sales were down $34 MILLION dollars and they had a gazillion TaylorMade drivers in stock. In an apparent cost-cutting move, Dick’s decided to “lay off” more than 500 PGA Professionals. They didn’t axe some of them, they axed them all. I feel for my fellow PGA members who are now job hunting. It was a very tough day for the golf industry. Dick’s has every right to run their business as they see fit, and consumers have the right to shop where they wish. For those of you who are in need of golf equipment, may I suggest you visit your local PGA Professional. You’ll be surprised with their competitive pricing, but you’ll get unparalleled service and be properly fit for the right equipment. We’re not just making a sale and taking your money; we want to make sure that the investment you make in equipment works for you and your game! Call me old fashioned, but I prefer to shop locally and avoid big-box retailers and support small businesses whenever possible. But like most consumers these days, you don’t want to pay more for something if you can pay less. Thus my occasional forays into WalMart and Costco or visiting Amazon online I do with some trepidation and a little guilt. I work my way up to the driver over the period of twenty to thirty minutes and finish off my warm-up session with a couple of drivers (that is because I am hitting driver off the first tee . . . and I hit the driver a lot off ALL the tees because I hit it so short!). Finally, I go back to the putting green and make five more three footers before I play. Now comes the test for my preparation on both the practice tee and my attempt to improve my putting. I am going to have to decide if I will play against the golf course or my playing partners. I may even make a small wager (sometimes, a penny a hole!) or just try to concentrate on my score for that round. But, you must remember that you cannot go out there thinking mechanics! You have to start having some confidence in your swing and your ability to make the ball go where you want it. You cannot try to make a swing change on the course; you must learn to trust what you have been working on and get a feel for that day. Otherwise, your game plan will not work. Now, if you want to learn more about how to play the course, you need to stay tuned to this space for the next article or contact me at Musket Ridge Golf Club.
