Co-processing technology??
Co-processing in cement kiln:
Cement production
Waste material destruction
Recovery of energy/
mineral from waste
Co-Processing refers to…
the use of suitable waste materials in
manufacturing processes for the
purpose of energy and/or resource
recovery and resultant reduction in
the use of conventional fuels and/or
raw material through substitution.

sound co-processing of hazardous waste in cement
kilns, UNEP, 2011.

Why co-processing in cement kilns can be an option?
(Technical aspects)
• High Temperature, long residence Time, Turbulence
1,450 C, 5-6 Sec = Complete Combustion
• Self-cleaning kilns
Lime represents >60% by mass = excellent scrubbing capacity
• No “ash” residue
Inorganic components are incorporated in the cement product.
• Process design and operating parameter protect the
environment
Emissions are unaffected by substituting parts of fossil fuels with wastes.

Feeding points are carefully selected to ensure safe
and environmentally friendly manner

Feeding points will be selected
according to;
•
Physical
•
Chemical
•
Toxicological characteristics

1
1
Used oil, spent solvent, liquid waste containing organic components e.g. PCBs, Pesticides
2
SRF, RDF, RPF, rice husk, wood bark, atomized sludge etc.
3
Used tire, lump fuel, sludge etc.
4
Mixed AR: fly & bottom ash, drilling cutting, sand dust, iron dust, wastewater sludge etc.

Emissions are trapped at different kiln processes ensuring no
additional emissions are created.
U.S.EPA recommended that..
the conditions of complete combustion
destroying toxic chemicals e.g. PCBs are;
1,200 C, residence time 2s,
excess oxygen 3%
Emissions
1,600 C, residence time 1.5s,
excess oxygen 2%
• Organics, HM
• SOx, HCl
• Dust
• NOx
• PCDD/Fs
• CO2

Prevention of PCDD/Fs formulation/reincarnation
1. Waste is completely burnt at high temperature, long resident time, turbulence.
2. To prevent reincarnation of PCDD/Fs, rapid quenching of off-gases to avoid potential zone
(200-650 C).
