RED DOORS GOLF: The best tasting round of golf is held in September at Nakoma Golf Club. “The kindness, care, compassion and sense of healing once I have walked through the red doors cannot be emphasized enough. Every person... staff, volunteer, member... is consistently doing their personal best to create and maintain the sense of community. The comfort level of the building and grounds... the soft and calm artistic surroundings... the sense of peace... the resource materials... the events... the calendar... the PEOPLE... make the almost two hour drive well worth my while.” –Member FREQUENT PROFESSIONAL PRESENTERS (MORE THAN 12 OCCURRENCES IN 2013) Dr. Lauren Cunningham Greta Johnson Madison Laughter Club Kathy Rothering Kate Thompson-Feirn Ridley Usherwood Betsy Waller Jules Wolf Stenzel Patty Zahler 5 IN MEMORIUM In November of 2013, Gilda’s Club Madison lost Kathy Cuddy, a member since the spring of 2012. Before she passed, Kathy made a simple request to her family: that in lieu of flowers, friends make contributions to Gilda’s Club, to thank members for their continued support over the years. Gilda’s Club receives many gifts in honor or memory of loved ones, but in 2013 the most gifts were made in memory of Kathy Cuddy. Because she will live on in the programs supported by her memorial, we’d like to share with you a bit about Kathy. Born on July 8, 1951, in Marinette, WI, Kathy was the daughter of Lloyd and Evelyn (Carlson) Clark of Green Bay, WI. She graduated from Southwest High School in 1969, and 100 later worked in Andover, MA. In 1976, she was united in marriage to the love of her life, James Cuddy, and lived in New Hampshire for 22 years. During that time she raised four children, Brian, Alison, Elizabeth and Lauren, playing an active role in school, sports and musical activities. The family moved to Middleton in 1999 where Kathy worked as a customer service representative for American Girl for 11 Christmas seasons, her favorite time of year. She was an exceptional mother, supporting her children through school, and she was especially proud that all four received their college degrees. Her talents in baking, sewing, and decorating the home will always be remembered by her family and friends. Kathy survived breast cancer in 2004 and courageously fought a recurrence in the Fall of 2012. As a member of Gilda’s Club, Kathy participated in support groups, networking groups, socials, and the “Red Sneaker” walking group. Kathleen Marie Cuddy, age 62, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 22, 2013 surrounded by her husband and children. The kids love the groups and I’ve noticed a marked reduction in their stress levels since joining Gilda’s Club (i.e. it’s seems easier for them to talk about their mom’s illness).” –Member “Gilda’s Club shows that it’s okay to have cancer, and it’s okay to reach out for help.” –Member 2013 RED DOOR SOCIETY MEMBERS Gilda’s Club Madison recognizes that sustainable income is needed to ensure programming remains free and accessible to all our friends and neighbors dealing with the impact of a cancer diagnosis. In a time of financial uncertainty, the Red Door Society was established in an effort to sustainably respond to the need for expanded programs, by providing a vehicle for advocates of Gilda’s Club to make an ongoing financial commitment. Five levels of support are suggested, but anyone pledging over $250 per year for a minimum of three years will be recognized as a Red Door Society member. Please contact Teresa Gmur at 608-828-8862 if you’d like to know more.
