In fact, the number of people reached through our education programs quadrupled. The American Liver Foundation developed and Rick Smith Allan W. Wolkoff, MD implemented core programs across the country to provide more people with tools to manage their disease more effectively. In addition, the American Liver Foundation’s 2009 signature events, led by the Liver Life Walk®, achieved a significant increase in revenue. We also developed the Liver Life Challenge initiative that will culminate with the Disney Marathon in 2011. To help broaden our sphere of influence, we acquired Liver Health Today magazine, giving subscribers the opportunity for membership in our organization. This annual report highlights the American Liver Foundation’s 2009 efforts and accomplishments aimed at creating a Spectacular Tomorrow for our stakeholders. Continuing to find opportunity in challenge inspires the American Liver Foundation staff, volunteers, and members to renew our commitment to lead, inform, and support a vision of tomorrow that is free of liver disease. Thank you for your ongoing support of the American Liver Foundation as we face new challenges and continue to build toward a Spectacular Tomorrow. Sincerely, Rick Smith Allan W. Wolkoff, MD President and Chief Executive Officer Chair, Board of Directors American Liver Foundation 2009 Annual Report 3 programs report Spectacular Results: Education Milestones Fiscal Year 2009 was a momentous year for mission delivery, particularly in education programs. The American Liver Foundation® nearly quadrupled the number of education participants and more than tripled the number of education programs conducted. As the American Liver Foundation continues to implement education programs, and further improve the quality, consistency, and reporting of support services in 2010, even more spectacular growth and new milestones are anticipated in the years ahead. In fiscal year 2009, the American Liver Foundation had unprecedented success in education programs, touching 160,533 individuals through education programs, support services, and outreach activities. Through its 489 education programs, the American Liver Foundation experienced dramatic growth and delivered consistent, high-quality programs and services with significant outcomes. FY 2009 program highlights include: • A 286% increase of participants in education programs (compared to FY 2008) • A 9% increase of individuals participating in outreach activities • A 5% increase in support services attendees • A 237% increase in the number of education programs conducted • An 84% average increase in program participants’ knowledge • A 21% increase in helpline requests. Additionally, the American Liver Foundation presented at the National Association for School Nurses Annual Conference and had four abstracts accepted for presentation at the American Public Health Association Annual Conference. Education Programs The American Liver Foundation education programs target three populations: general public, patients with liver disease and their families, and healthcare/social service professionals. Education programs consist of 4 core programs, national programs, and chapterspecific programs. Two of the four core programs, Love Your Liver and Treatment Choices Initiative, were developed and implemented nationwide during this past year. (The third program, Fatty Liver Information Program, was developed and piloted.) Core Programs Love Your Liver (LYL) The American Liver Foundation conducted 372 Love Your Liver programs that reached 20,085 students nationwide in FY 2009. There was a 93% average increase in knowledge among students who participated in Love Your Liver programs. American Liver Foundation 2009 Annual Report programs report Treatment Choices Initiative (TCI) In FY 2009, the American Liver Foundation conducted 69 Treatment Choices Initiative programs for 1,722 participants with a 47% average increase in knowledge among participants. Treatment Choices Initiative participants rely on the program to obtain comprehensive and accurate information about hepatitis C, its treatment and management, and have a higher baseline knowledge of the liver and hepatitis C compared to the average public participants. Support Services Support services include a national helpline (phone calls, e-mail, and letters), support groups, and hepatitis screening and testing programs. In 2009, the American Liver Foundation responded to 9,943 requests for information, a 21% increase compared to 2008. To assist support groups, the American Liver Foundation implemented updated policies and procedures that established greater quality, consistency, and outcome measurements. American Liver Foundation 2009 Annual Report Outreach Activities Outreach activities such as participation in health fairs, community meetings, conferences, street outreach, volunteer training, and educational media opportunities, raise liver awareness among large audiences. In FY 2009, outreach activities involved 123,994 people, a 9% increase compared to FY 2008. One-third of outreach participants were family members and friends of students who participated in the Love Your Liver program. Dramatic Growth To achieve a Spectacular Tomorrow, the American Liver Foundation® has conducted numerous education programs designed to give patients with liver disease, their families, the medical community, and the general public an increased understanding of liver disease. 5 research 2009 Research Awards Program Awards and Awardees 2009 Liver Scholars 2009 Seed Grant American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases Liver Scholar Alexander G.
