CO-OP
Co-ops are
good
for the planet — and for people, too.
C
hances are that you, like millions of Americans, are playing a part in the “green” revolution. Maybe
you’re recycling newspapers and aluminum cans or you’ve switched to compact fluorescent light bulbs.
Perhaps you ride a bicycle, own a hybrid car or seek out locally grown produce.
It’s no surprise that America’s co-ops are also doing their part to benefit and protect the environment. As
member-owned and member-driven businesses, co-ops are often the first to recognize emerging American
trends and values.
While focusing on member needs, cooperatives also work for the sustainable development of their
communities. That concern for community is one of the seven cooperative principles that drive co-ops every
day. In fact, America’s cooperatives were among the first businesses to espouse environmentally friendly
values back in the 1960s and 1970s, when food co-ops began cultivating “green” ideologies.
Today, co-ops and their members are investing in renewable fuels, practicing sustainable farming and
constructing more energy- and water-efficient offices and buildings. They’re supplying wind and biomass
energy, preserving wetlands and wildlife habitat, and working to improve air quality.
NCB, too, is playing its part in environmental stewardship. We are developing Bank-wide ways to make our
offices and operations more environmentally friendly. At the same time, we’re
developing more holistic solutions to empower underserved communities. Our
goal is to create more affordable cooperative homeownership,
assisted living, housing and services for the frail and elderly,
and facilities for health care centers and charter schools.
As the nation’s cooperatives apply their considerable power to
eco-friendly programs, they’re continuing to generate the
impressive revenues that help make America’s economy the
strongest one in the world. In fact, in 2006, the top 100 co-ops
in the country generated more than $150 billion in revenues, an
increase of $11 billion over 2005. Take a closer look at this year’s
NCB Co-op 100® for these member-owned powerhouses.
Co-ops deliver valuable products and services, employ hundreds of
thousands of Americans and benefit the world around them. It’s
clear that co-ops are not only good for business and the planet —
but also good for people, too.

Energy and Communications
Energy
with a
New Twist
More than 750 energy co-op systems — or nearly 90 percent of our Nation’s electric co-ops —
offer their members a green power option, according to the National Rural Electric Cooperative
Association. Most co-op-owned renewable generating capacity is powered by wind or
biomass, but energy co-ops, which provide power to 40 million Americans, are
doing even more.
As Minnesota’s second largest electric utility, Great River Energy (#59) in 2006
spent nearly $18 million on conservation and demand response programs —
generating some 636 million kilowatt-hours of lifetime savings and reducing
summer peaks by more than 12 percent. In addition, their everyday efforts
include carbon dioxide emissions reduction and other pollution prevention;
wildlife management and preservation with a focus on peregrine falcons and
ospreys; prairie restoration; and a push toward renewable fuels, including wind
energy, refuse-derived fuel and hydropower.
34
Florida’s Seminole Electric Cooperative (#34), is
distributing compact fluorescent light bulbs, or
CFLs, to their members to encourage them to switch
from regular incandescent light bulbs. The switch may
cost more upfront but CFLs last much longer, use much
less energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Agriculture
Harvesting
“Green”
From creating new sources of energy to cleaning the air, agricultural co-ops are playing
an important role in protecting the environment.
The NCB Co-op 100’s® long-standing chart-topper, CHS Inc. (#1), is a perfect example.
As a leading distributor of ethanol and biodiesel, two important renewable fuels,
CHS Inc. has made tremendous investments in environmental projects at their
fuel refineries, including $400 million recently to meet low sulfur diesel
requirements.
Other prime examples of leaders in the area of “green” agriculture are a
growing number of dairy producers, including members of Land O’Lakes (#5)
and California Dairies, Inc. (#15), which are using methane digesters to
convert cow manure into energy that powers homes in many parts
of the United States. In the process, they’re reducing odor
and lowering carbon dioxide emissions.
14
The largest cooperative soybean processing company
in the world, Ag Processing, Inc. (#14), uses Midwestern
soybeans and corn to produce ethanol and biodiesel.
These two renewable fuels help gasoline manufacturers
comply with clean-air standards and reduce America’s
dependence on foreign oil.
Finance
Green
on Green
Finance co-ops have come up with unique ways to preserve the environment. Whether it is switching to
paperless systems, building green facilities or stepping up recycling programs, finance co-ops, including
the 13 that appear on this list, are doing their part to protect and improve the planet.
Many of the Nation’s credit unions, including Virginia-based Navy Federal Credit Union (#19), are
constructing high-performance, environmentally friendly buildings under the Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design program. This nationally accepted, green-building rating system recognizes
performance in sustainable site and materials selection, water savings, energy
efficiency and indoor environmental quality.
58
In January 2007, State Employees’
Credit Union (SECU) (#58)
partnered with NC GreenPower to support
cleaner, renewable energy alternatives for
North Carolina. The credit union’s
community development arm will fund
one kilowatt hour of renewable energy
production in North Carolina for each of the
1.3 million members of SECU annually over
the next four years — a commitment to
renewable energy in North Carolina of more
than 5.2 million kilowatt hours.
Hardware and Lumber
Building
a Green Inventory
While the five hardware and lumber co-ops on the NCB Co-op 100®
generated $10 billion in revenues in 2006, they were also stocking
their shelves with growing levels of “green” merchandise.
17
Do it Best Corp. (#11) works with their vendors
to highlight and offer assortments of
environmentally friendly products. The co-op
is Energy Star-certified on their
private-label compact fluorescent light
bulbs and expects to have more of their
private-label products
certified by Energy Star
in the future.
True Value Company (#17)
keeps their merchandising
strategy in step with the
tastes and interests of
today’s eco-minded
consumer. This well-known
hardware co-op is
dedicating more space to
compact fluorescent light
bulbs and organic
gardening products,
as well as continuing
to stock other energysaving mainstays like
fans and insulation
products.
Grocery
Green is
Good
Grocery co-ops, including the 16 on this list, do their part as
environmental stewards while helping independent
grocers succeed in a world of big-box and
club stores.
Through their recycling programs,
Wakefern Food Corp. (#3), with their
ShopRite banner, reduces the amount of waste
that enters landfills and garbage dumps. Each
year, ShopRite customers reuse more than
5.5 million grocery bags through the company’s
“two cents back” program.
Additionally, ShopRite, the largest retailer-owned
cooperative in the United States, recycles 94,000
tons of corrugated cardboard, 1,400 tons of waxed
corrugated cardboard and 1,600 tons of plastic each
year. The co-op promotes these programs and other
ways their customers can “go green” through their
customer newsletter, ShopRite Earth, which is published
two times a year and distributed at their 190 stores across
five states.
Healthcare
A Healthier
Planet
As consumer-governed, nonprofit healthcare systems, the co-ops
on this list prove that caring for the environment can go
hand-in-hand with caring for people. Take Minnesota’s
HealthPartners Inc. (#13) for example. They
emphasize a “green” approach and sustainable
materials in their clinic projects. From
HealthPartners’ choice of architectural firms,
to furniture and carpet selections, to energysaving strategies and the use of native plants in
landscape plans to reduce water needs, they
have embedded environmental stewardship
throughout their operations.
12
A big supporter of alternative means of
transportation, Washington-based
Group Health Cooperative (#12) encourages
and supports employees who ride their bikes to
work. Group Health is also building “green” as
they construct new headquarters in Seattle and
two new medical centers in Bellevue and
Redmond that are environmentally responsible.
What
is a Co-op?
Webster’s Dictionary defines a cooperative as “a jointly owned
enterprise engaging in the production or distribution of goods or
the supply of services, operated by its members for its mutual
benefit.” But to one-in-four Americans, a cooperative is much
38
more.
It may be the child care center where
our children spend each day, or the
credit union where we seek competitive
banking services. It may be the building
where we live, or our energy provider, or
the most competitive way for farmers to
sell crops in the global marketplace.
Cooperatives are an American
institution. Fully integrated
into our lives, they
represent a broad
cross- section of people
and businesses. More
than 120 million
Americans are members
of a co-op.
At its California citrus
products plant,
Sunkist
Grow
ers,
Sunk
ist Gro
wer
s, Inc.
(#38) recently added a
treatment facility that
allows large quantities
of wastewater to be
discharged in an
environmentally
friendly way. This
prevents possible
ground or surface
water contamination.
Today, there are some 47,000 cooperative businesses. They can be found in urban, suburban and rural
areas, and in nearly every industry: agriculture, grocery, hardware and lumber, energy and
communications, healthcare, purchasing, finance and more. In the United States, more than 1.2 million
families of all income levels live in homes owned and
operated through cooperative associations.
Owned by the members they serve, each co-op is democratically
governed. America’s co-ops provide hundreds of thousands of jobs and
maintain close ties to the communities they serve. Each operates for the
benefit of their members and is governed by a board of directors elected from
the membership to set the co-op’s policies. And each co-op is there to help
members increase their power; co-op members can buy, sell, market or bargain
as one group. Co-ops share in economies of scale — and in any profits they may
generate.
The top 100 co-ops featured in this report have combined revenues of more
than $150 billion. Some are even FORTUNE 500 companies. But there are
many more cooperatives that don’t appear on the NCB Co-op 100®. Some
co-ops serve only a handful of members. But whatever their size, all co-ops
share a fundamental goal: to unite people to meet a common need.
Wherever there is that need, and people willing to work together to fill it,
co-ops exist.
North Dakota’s Basin Electric Power Cooperative (#71), which
distributes electricity to 2.5 million consumers, is a recognized
leader of wind energy development in the upper Midwest. In 2006,
the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy
Laboratory ranked Basin Electric sixth in the country in renewable
energy sales among utilities with green power programs.
71
The
Cooperative
7
Principles
Co-ops worldwide operate using these seven principles:
1Voluntary and Open Membership
2Democratic Member Control
3Member Economic Participation
4Autonomy and Independence
5Education, Training and Information
6Cooperation Among Cooperatives
7Concern for Community
52
Associated Electric Cooperative, Inc. (#52) received a
national award in 2007 for reclaiming mined land in
Missouri. The former Bee Veer mine site is now fields,
woods and wetlands, thanks to Associated Electric.
The grass is high for cattle grazing, turkey and deer
are back, and the fishing is good.
Purchasing Co-ops:
Wielding
market power
for Main Street independents
One co-op sector that wields great market power is the purchasing cooperative. Like other types of co-ops,
purchasing co-ops are businesses whose owner-members have joined together to increase the performance
and competitiveness of their organizations. Purchasing co-ops can be found across America’s business
landscape.
Today, there are about 250 purchasing co-ops in the country, all helping Main Street’s local businesses
survive and prosper. Owned and governed by independent business owners, purchasing cooperatives do
many things for their members. They negotiate prices with vendors. They purchase supplies or inputs, and
often offer private labeling or product branding. They provide joint advertising and marketing, and they
warehouse products.
We would like to see more purchasing co-ops on the NCB Co-op 100®.
If you’re a purchasing co-op, please send your latest financial
statement on the goods and services negotiated on behalf of
your members to Barry Silver at [email protected]. Join
America’s top co-ops in well-deserved recognition
on the NCB Co-op 100®.
