Ontario Speedway has become one of the crown
jewels of DIRT racing in the past few seasons and
the home to the Northeast Fall Nationals every
October, an event that crowns the champion of the
Super DIRT Series for 358 Modifieds, Sportsman
and Pro Stocks. The addition of stars like Steve
Kinser, Donny Schatz and Jason Meyers to our rich
and expanding history was a logicial next step in our
evolution as one of the Thousand Islands premier

So What Is A Sprint Car?
The World of Outlaws is
the premier winged
sprint car series in the
world, featuring the
world class drivers.
Beginning in 1978, the World of Outlaws
tour invades race tracks and thrills fans
in 23 different states while sanctioning
events at some of the most famous
dirt racing facilities in the world. The
Outlaws race for nearly $6 million in
purses and other prize money.
Races take place on dirt tracks ranging
in size from a ¼-mile to a 5/8-mile. The
schedule consists of approximately 85
events and is considered one of the
most grueling in all of motorsports
worldwide
Hear the noise, the roar of the engine
and the whine of the rear gears.
Sometimes you can feel the breeze
stirred by the wings as cars speed by in
excess of 100 MPH. As it enters the turn,
it translates forward momentum into
a shower of dirt. Smell the distinctive
odor of burnt methanol as you watch
the driver frantically shuffle the steering
wheel to keep the car on the track and
pointed in the right direction - looking
right to turn left. It’s hard to believe a
car could be that far sideways and yet
not only under control, but accelerating
at a fantastic rate!

Sprint cars are high-powered race cars
designed primarily for the purpose of
running on short oval or circular dirt or
paved tracks.
The world’s first winged car was created
and driven by Jim Cushman at the
Columbus Motor Speedway (Ohio) in
1958. It was in the early 70’s, that many
sprint car drivers began to put wings
with sideboards on both the front and
top of their cars. The added wings
increased the down force generated on the car, with the opposite direction of the
sideboards helping to turn the car in the corners. Wings also provide an amount
of protection for the driver in case of an accident and are sometimes referred to
as “aluminum courage.” With the addition of wings, a new sanctioning body and
touring series to promote the sport was founded. In 1978, Ted Johnson formed
the leading promotional body for winged sprint cars called the World of Outlaws.
Races are featured through out the United States from February to November.
Safety Aspects
The safety record of sprint car racing in recent years has been greatly improved by
several new mandatory safety regulations including the use of roll cages to protect
the drivers, fuel tank bladders to prevent fuel leakage, alcohol fuel, requirements to
use a six or seven-point safety harness seatbelt two years old or newer, and driver
suit standards to consist of two layers and rated at least SFI 3.2A/5. In addition,
drivers must wear nomex driving gloves. Other equipment requirements include:
helmets must be full coverage and must exceed Snell 2000 rating; arm restraints
systems must be used; cars must have a 1/8 inch wire debris/rock screen in the
front roll cage opening covering the entire opening; and headrests mandatory on
the right side of the driver’s seat. Some sanctioning bodies are also requiring a
head and neck restraint system.

Race Night Glossary
A- (or Feature) – The final race of the night which decides who is the overall winner of the
event.
B-Main (Last Change Showdown) – This is the final chance a driver has to make it into the
A-Main. Depending on the number of heat races run, the Top-4 finishers in the B-Main of a
four heat race program and the Top-6 finishers in the B-Main in a three heat race program
will transfer into the main event.
Dash – The first and second place finishers from each of the four heat races in a standard
race program qualify for the dash, along with the fastest two drivers from time trials that
transferred from the heat race into the A-Feature but did not finish first or second in the
heat. These drivers will be lined up by their time trials time for the dash and then a fan will
draw either a 4,6 or 8 pill for an inversion of the dash stating line-up. The Top-10 starting
positions in the A-Feature are then determined by the finishing order of the dash in a three
or four heat race program and the Top-12 in a five heat race program.
Hot Laps – A session held prior to time trials. This session is run in groups. Each car is
assigned to a group prior to this hot lap session and the groups are determined by the draw
that set the order to ensure that their car is ready for qualifying.
Heat Race (or Heats) – An 8-12 lap race that determines which cars will move on to the
A-Feature or B Main. The top five cars in the heats transfer to the A-Main, when there are
four heat races. If there are three heat races, then the top six finishers in the heat race
transfer to the A-Feature.
Inversion- The Top-16 cars in time trials are inverted in the heat races, meaning that the
fastest qualifier in time trials starts in the fourth-spot in the first heat. The second fastest
qualifier starts in the fourth-spot of the second heat. The third fastest qualifier starts in the
fourth spot in the third heat, and the fourth quick qualifier starts in the fourth spot in the
fourth heat (when four heats are run). The fifth fastest qualifier starts third in the first heat.
The sixth fastest qualifier starts third in the second heat, and so on, working up to the 13th
fastest qualifier starting on the pole of the first heat. The 14th fastest qualifier is on the pole
of the second heat. The 15th fastest qualifier is on the pole for the third heat. The 16th fastest
qualifier is on the pole of the fourth heat The remainder of the cars are lined up heads up
by their time, starting in the third row of each heat race.
Time Trials- Each competitor is given two timed laps to determine where they will start in a
heat race. If a competitor misses their spot in the qualifying order by more than two places,
by rule, they are allowed one lap at the end of time
