To My Loving Sister
By Kayla Robinson,
Grade 7
You never said you’re leaving
You never said goodbye
You were gone before I knew it,
And only God knew why
A million time I needed you.
A million times I cried.
If love alone could have saved you,
You would never have died.
In life I loved you dearly,
In death I love you still.
In my heart you hold a place,
That nobody could ever fill.
It broke my heart to lose you
But you didn’t go alone
For part of me went with you,
The day God took you home.

By Autum Bivins,
Grade 8
A relationship isn’t about hugging and kissing.
It’s something more. It’s going out to movies or going out to eat with the one you like, possibly love. I
know what it feels like. The feeling when you get
butterflies, when you feel like no one else can make
you feel the same way. Well, that’s not true. We all
can find someone better. If you don’t know what to
do about something, ask a friend for help. If that
doesn’t work, then go with what your heart is telling
you. A relationship is something more than love. It’s
you and me.
Gangs
By Noel Hernandez,
Grade 8
Why do kids join gangs? Kids join gangs
because they feel alone and bullied. Being in a
gang can hurt your future and other people, like
your family. If your gang is doing illegal activities, cops will look at your every move, and you
may become in custody. The song “Gangsta’s
Paradise” and the stories “Gang Girl” and
“Saying No to Gangs” are all great stories about
saying no to gangs.
out of jail, she asked for her mother’s forgiveness. When she got on her feet, she got a job.
A person came to her and said, “If I did not
have my kid with me, I would kill you.”
In the song “Gangsta’s Paradise,” the
writer Coolio was giving his point of view and
his experience of being in a gang. In one of
Coolio’s lyrics he said, “Tell me why are we so
blind to see the only ones we hurt are you and
me.”
I think the “Gangsta Paradise,” “Gang
Girl,” and “Saying No to Gangs” are some of the
most uplifting stories I ever read.
As Gang Girl got older, all her friends
died. When she was in her gang, the Deceptionettes, she lost everything. At the end, she left
her friends. The Gang Girl story was great. Now
she helps innocent kids out of gangs.
The uplifting story, “Gang Girl,” is told by
a girl that lived it herself. The gang girl came to
her senses when she was in jail. When she got

The Outsiders Characters
By Christian Meachum,
In Chapter 1 of
The Outsiders, Ponyboy
describes the members
of his family and
friends. The members
that are described are
Two-Bit and Dallas.
They have similarities
and differences.
Two-Bit is the
oldest in the gang and
is famous for shoplifting
and his black-handled
switchblade. He is the
wisecracker (jokester)
in the bunch. Whatever
he says is irresistibly
funny that he just had
to let the police in on it
to brighten their dull
lives.
Dally had been
arrested, drunk,
jumped, rode in rodeos,
lied, cheated, stole,
rolled drunks, and
jumped small kids. He
blew off steam in gang
fights. The greasers
couldn’t defeat the
Socs.
The way they are
both the same is that
they are in a gang. Another similarity is that
they both steal or shoplift from stores. Dallas
and Two-Bit also carry
knives called
switchblades.
The difference
between Two-Bit and
Dallas is that Two-Bit is
the oldest in the gang.
Dallas did more bad
things than Two-Bit did.
They both have different personalities.
The reason I
picked Two-Bit and Dallas is because I relate
to them. Except the
part when Dallas got
arrested for a lot of
crimes that he did. Also,
the part when Two-Bit
and Dally steal. So, I
hope the rest of the
book will be good.
9 Gangs are negative. They think it is
going to change their lives just because they
have money and weapons. The common
theme is that gangs can change your life and
that they can hurt you. They can hurt you by
murder, rape, stabbing, and they can beat
you up. It would be smart of you to never
join a gang and to make good choices. There
is a song called “Gangsta’s Paradise” by
Coolio and “Gang Girl” by an interviewer
named Sue Russell, and “Saying No to Gangs”
essay by an anonymous former gang member.
In the song “Gangsta’s Paradise,” the
common theme is shown in the last paragraph where he says, “Tell me why are we so
blind to see, that the ones we hurt are you
and me.” I think that means that nothing is
going to get better if they just keep on hurting each other and them just thinking that
they are going to run this world. I think that
they should stop because God does not like
ugly.
In the story “Gang Girl”, the common
theme is shown when she finally realizes that
all of her friends were being killed by gangs.
Like Hello! She should have known that the
gangs were going to hurt her family and
friends no matter what because they think it’s
cool and they must love jail if they keep doing
things that they shouldn’t be doing.
In the article “Saying No to Gangs,”
the common theme is shown when she sees
that her cousin, Ricky, was shot in the chest,
his left shoulder, and on the left side of his
head. She stopped being in gangs, after she
saw Ricky shot. That was actually a great
path to cross so she can start a new life and
to end all the bad things that she was doing.
I really hope that gangs will end and
that people make good choices and that they
will set goals for things. I hope that they will
change and get jobs and think smart so that
they can become better people.

A community is when a bunch of people
get together and make a difference, ex: clean
up, neighborhood watch, and many more. Community is when everyone works together, and
also they team up to keep a community safe.
They show respect for each other and have
each other’s back. Your friends are also part of
your community. They help you like if you need
a ride to school, they can car pool. Or, if you’re
hurt, they can get help or get you home safely.
people. If someone is getting bullied, you can
get that person and the bully to sit down and
talk. Sometimes it’s not good enough to just
give the bully a refill, they will just keep doing it.
You can make a difference by asking for
help to stop bullying. In your community you
can spend time outside and talk to them so you
don’t feel alone. When you make a difference,
maybe some others might too. You can make a
difference by starting a program which helps
what, she didn’t care. Sometimes, you can make
a big difference by just doing something small.
That is what I think a community is. After writing this it makes me feel that I can make a huge
difference. But, I never did.
If you don’t help, who will? The people
that do bully would not like it if it was them.
They would want it to stop! Maybe it makes
them feel big. They might think it’s cool, but it’s
not. It’s cruel. It does not make the victims have
confidence, it makes them have fears. Someone

By Kariel Chin,

We are a community
With equal opportunity
A community should stick together
Why hate on each other
Instead of helping one another?
Hurt and Pain
No matter if you’re
Black or white
Rich or poor
Young or old
We’re all human
And want the best
For our community
Why are people so mean
At the end of the day?
Always putting people down
They don’t care what they say.
Bullies don't care
That they’re making people cry.
They don’t feel guilty
When they commit suicide.
We need each other
Each person does
An important part
So let’s come together
And cherish each other
Together night and day
We’re a community
Let’s stay that way!

We always love

12 Middle Wrinkle, November 2012 Gangs
By Emily Maxwell,
Grade 8
Gangs can change your life.
They can also hurt your life by doing
drugs and drinking. And in the song
and two stories, it tells you about the
gangs. The stories and song are
“Gangsta’s Paradise,” a song by
Coolio, a story called, “Gang Girl,” by
Sue Russell, and the last story is
“Saying No to Gangs.”
In the song, “Gangsta’s Paradise,” it shows that you’re blind when
you’re in a gang. And it says that
there’s drugs and drinking in gangs.
And it also said that they have money
and dropped out of school. When you
join a gang, it can hurt you and other
people.
“Gang Girl” by Sue Russell is based on
a true story. In the story, the girl’s
friends were getting killed. So, when
her friends started getting killed, she
did not want to be in the gang anymore. The girl made her mom cry.
In the story, “Saying No to
Gangs,” the girl and her friends are in
a gang. In the story the girl’s cousin
got shot. After her cousin got shot, he
was paralyzed. After her cousin was
paralyzed, she wanted to get out of
the gang. The reason she wanted to
13 out was because she did not want to get
hurt or anyone else to get hurt.
In the song and two stories, it’s
saying not to join gangs. When you join
a gang, it involves getting killed, getting
hurt, doing drugs, and drinking. In a
gang they could kill one of your best
friends without you knowing it. The
drugs and drinking mess up your life
really bad. So, don’t join a gang and stay
clean.
Middle Wrinkle, November 2012 By Luis Acevedo,
Grade 8
It all started four months ago. I asked
my friend, “Hey, do we ever beat up a
greaser?” “I don’t know.” I was chilling with
cheer-leaders at a football field. I thought for
hours and finally I had an idea. “How about we
find a greaser and start beating him up to show
who’s tough?” They all agreed.
That night, we rode in a blue Mustang,
driving through the streets. It was over two
hours, “I found one.” It was a greaser looking
for a football, all alone. This was perfect.
We parked on the curb and starting
beating him up real bad, and it felt good. As we
were punching and kicking him, I did one more
blow that cut up his cheek. “So, what should
we do with him?” “Just leave him there.” I was
so proud.
While we were driving, my fingers were
covered in blood from the punches I gave him.
Still, I wondered why he was all by himself.
Who cares anyway, because all I cared about
was beating up that greaser.
14 By Darius Rodgers,
Grade 8
The Socs, Noah, Khadeem, Semaj, and I were riding around in my blue
Mustang until we saw a greaser. I knew
it was a greaser because of his hair. He
was heading to this parking lot. Semaj
said, “Let’s go get him!” So, I pulled up
beside the parking lot. We all got out of
the car. We caught up to him. Noah had
rings on, so that’s what cut his face up
bad.
We scared him. We threatened.
When we were through with him, well,
he looked like a nervous wreck. When
we were finished with him, we just left
him there to limp home. Then we left,
feeling proud of ourselves.
Middle Wrinkle, November 2012 Characters in The Outsiders
By Jessica Connor,
Grade 8
In Chapter One of The Outsiders, Ponyboy describes the members of the gang. There
are seven gang members in the gang called the
greasers. Although the two gang members are
in the same group, they both have different personality traits and physical characteristics. They
are brothers.
Ponyboy’s second oldest brother is Soda.
Now, Soda is Ponyboy’s favorite brother. Although he is his favorite, he did dropout of
school and Ponyboy is still worried. Soda does
not talk about that and Ponyboy wants to know
how to talk to girls, too. And, he is so cool that
he does not have to get drunk to be fun, that is
why people like him.
Darry is his oldest brother. The parents
died in an auto wreck and Darry works a lot. He
had a scholarship to college but he said no. He
works too much so he can pay the house bills so
they have a home to live in. He is like the father,
but he is only the brother. He loves his two
brothers so much.
Now, Soda and Darry are two different
people. Soda is one of those people who does
not have to get drunk to be fun. Darry is strict
and like a father to Soda and Ponyboy. Darry
got a scholarship to college and Soda dropped
out of school. Darry did not accept it because he
works a lot. Darry is a father to Ponyboy and
Soda’s like a best friend to Ponyboy.
Darry and Soda are almost alike because
they are both brothers to Ponyboy. Darry and
Soda both went to school a long time ago. They
are both in a gang. And they lost their parents.
In Chapter One of The Outsiders it is
about Soda and Darry and how they are in a
gang. The physical characteristics and personality traits have been described.

You are as sweet as cupcakes,
When we eat you, gulp, gulp down you

When we eat you, you tingle our throats,
The sound in our mouth goes Umm, um
We always beg for more
When we are done eating, you give us a
