A uniquely Viennese affair with a Spanish twist
The 57th Kaffeesieder Ball (Viennese Coffeehouse Owners’ Ball) takes place on 21 February 2014 at the Hofburg Vienna
& Redoutensaelen & Rooftop Foyer under the banner of “Wiener Gspusi”, or A Viennese Affair. Passion and indulgence are
always the key ingredients of a Gspusi, which is why this year’s Coffeehouse Owners’ Ball will add some Spanish spice to its
traditional Viennese flavours.
Spain and Austria have more in common than just the Habsburg dynasty: a love of opera and a coffeehouse culture is deeply
ingrained in the national psyche of both countries. Taking its cue from the Spanish zarzuela, equivalent to operetta, the 57th
Viennese Coffeehouse Owners’ Ball will be heavily influenced by Mediterranean charm this year. While most people have
heard of Flamenco dancing, fewer know that it is also an established vocal genre. Arcángel, one of the rising young stars on
Spain’s Flamenco singing scene, will be showing how it’s done during the 1am performance in the Grosser Redoutensaal.
Alongside tenor Pabli Cameselle and soprano Ana Carolina Diz, an Arcángel-led trio will treat guests to a concert entitled
Spanish Nights featuring excerpts from operettas, and a selection of songs from southern Spain. This exciting constellation was
made possible with the support of the Spanish Embassy and the Spanish National Tourist Office.
Maximilian K. Platzer, patron of the ball and Chairman of the Society of Viennese Coffeehouse Owners is looking forward
to the exciting combination and the glittering ball night ahead: “Spirit, rhythm and a lust for life – the ideal match for
us coffeehouse owners. Vienna and Spain make the perfect couple! We will be pulling out all the stops to make this an
unforgettable night for the coffeehouse owners and their friends – olé.”

Hearts aflame for the Viennese Ball Season
For some it’s a casual liaison, while for others it’s a simmering love affair. Whatever way you look at it, a Wiener Gspusi is
the very definition of passion and indulgence – characteristics that apply in equal measure to the Kaffeesiederball (Viennese
Coffeehouse Owners’ Ball). On 21 February 2014 the 57th instalment of the Kaffeesiederball will play out at the Hofburg in a
night themed “Wiener Gspusi”, or A Viennese Affair.
Love is in the air – this year the drinks, bar and decorations will be all about love and passion. Guests at this year’s ball can look
forward to a special Gspusi Bar. Located in the Hofburg winter garden, it has been designed to reflect the evening’s theme with
dimmed orange, pink and red lighting, cosy corners and chilled out music setting the scene for some serious flirting. There is
even a delicious Orange Passion Gspusi drink to provide a spot of Dutch courage. A Campari-based mix, the name alone hints
at a ball night full of flirtation and stolen glances. Cherubs and hearts in a range of warm grey, bronze and dusky pink shades
carry the theme through into the decorations.
Flirting at the Viennese coffeehouse
Traditionally, a Viennese Gspusi is all about something positive and full of life, combined with a healthy dose of joie de vivre
and a knowing wink. So what could be a better motto for the capital’s most impressive ball, the Viennese Coffeehouse Owners’
ball? Legendary ball patron Maximilian K. Platzer is already full of anticipation ahead of the 57th Kaffeesieder Ball. “The
“Gspusi” is more or less anchored in Viennese coffeehouse tradition. Countless cases of secret affairs can be traced back to
what we think is the best place on earth: the Viennese coffeehouse. Which explains our decision to pay tribute to the humble
coffeehouse flirtation, by making the Gspusi the motto of the 57th V Viennese Coffeehouse Owner’s ball.”
