WAKING YOUR BOAT FROM A LONG WINTER'S NAP
Tips on getting your watercraft ready for the boating season
Waking your boat from a long hibernation is a chore
we all eagerly await. There's no better feeling come
spring than hearing the engine purr smoothly for
the first time, ready to breathe life into another full
season on the water.
Getting into the habit of de-winterizing your boat,
engine and trailer before hitting the lake ensures
that everything will be in tip-top shape, leading to a
stress-free maiden voyage and far less headaches
when riding the wet stuff.
Start with a walk around your boat, do a visual
check for any gouges or cracks in the hull. Also look
for missing or loose rivets. If any damage is found,
outside help may be required to fix it. Check the
bilge area for any dirt or debris that may have collected over the winter. While there, install the drain
plug. I'll repeat once again, install the drain plug.
Check battery fluid levels and top off if necessary
using distilled water. Also check terminals for corrosion, and clean and lubricate with grease. Although
your battery should have been regularly charged
over the winter, ensure that it is at full strength before placing it back in the boat.
Connect all electronics (fish finders, GPS, bilge, live
wells, radio, VHF, lights, etc.) and ensure that they
are all working properly. If applicable, make sure
the horn is sounding loud and clear.
Getting your boat ready for the boating season can
sometimes be a daunting task. It is very important
to make sure that you investment and the smallest
of human error can cause big problems when out
on the water-ways. Even though most tasks can be
preformed by the boat owner it is always
recommended to have your vessel checked by a
professional to insure a safe and trouble free
boating season.

GTB CLASSES BEGIN APRIL 6, 2013
TrueCourse Captain’s School is a USCG approved school that
specializes their instruction on the Inland River Systems and
Great Lakes. Our instructors are specially trained to give you
every
advantage to understand the material that is included on the
USCG test (we give the test!). We go the extra mile that most
schools
neglect, by providing all the other required steps to ensure that
you will complete every regulation to obtain your license. No
other school “holds your hand” throughout the process of license
application” like TrueCourse Captain’s School.
Yet, our courses are designed for the pleasure boater too.
So, even if you’re not planning a full or part time career as a
licensed captain, you find the material will make you a better
skipper.
OUVP : Known as the 6-Pack. This license is required for carrying up to 6 passengers for hire. It can be used for entry level
Delivery Captains or mates, or Captains of private boats for
short cruises. This is a frequent license used for fishing guides.
This is also a great license for the private owner that wishes to
become a better Skipper of his own vessel. The course teaches
you to be a competent boat pilot. The class is 56 hours long and
is scheduled, in most locations, not to interfere with your work
schedule.
Master Upgrade: This is for larger USCG inspected boats that
carry more than 6 passengers, such as ferry boats, dinner cruise
boats, water taxies and commercial boats. Most boat delivery
Captains hold a Master License, as the boat owner’s insurance
may require a Master Captain to pilot the boat for delivery. This
course teaches you the regulations and USCG requirements to
“manage” the boat, not necessarily to pilot the vessel. This is
a three-day class. Most students find it best to take this class
directly following the OUPV for easy USCG combined application of license.
Tow Endorsement: This addition to either license permits the
Captain to engage in the work of towing or salvage; a must if
you plan to work for a licensed towing service, or for practical
knowledge to assist a fellow boater. The class is 4 hours.
License Renewal: Your license is good for 5 years, with a
6-month grace period. By taking this one-day class, you eliminate the need for 360 days of vessel time to qualify for renewal.
Green Turtle Bay Resort will host the True Course Captain’s School
beginning April 6th. If you are interested in obtaining your license,
please contact Captain Ron Getter at True Course. GTB will have
special Captain’s rates available for condo rentals,
contact the resort for more info.

What's Coming Up
March brought with her the taste of spring. We had 70 degree days followed by 40 degree days. The Saint Patrick's Party was
packed with many members taking advantage of the warm weekend to get some projects done on Friday and Saturday before
the festivities began. Luckily the weather held out for most of the weekend. The crowd was anxious to celebrate the beginning
of a new boating season. The month ended with Easter and the annual Easter brunch. It was the perfect ending to the winter
and kept us looking forward to the busy April schedule ahead. Speaking of April, sailing season has begun. The kickoff for the
CYC Spring Sailing Series starts April 13th. If you haven't participated in the Sailing Series in the past check out the Sailing
Series group on the web site for all the details on this year's events. Also start gathering your items now for the third annual
Pirates Sale. We will once again be holding this
event on the Saturday morning of the Spring Boat
Show. You can join in the local boating swap meet
by Dockers. Have you been storing parts from
your previous boat that you have no use for? What
great treasures do you have aboard that need to
be gotten rid of? Call or e-mail Emory Pence at
[email protected] to reserve your table.
Don’t have anything to sell, come for the bargains. Who knows you may just find that one of
your neighbors has the perfect treasure you have
been missing for your boat. Join in the fun. Then
on the 20th of April come to be a part of the Blessing of the Fleet. Polish up your boat and bring
her out to get her blessed at the beginning of the
season. This event was a huge success last year
with both in slip as well as cruising blessings. We
can only hope that the weather is as cooperative
this year. Let us know your boat name pier and
slip number early this year if you are planning on
an in-slip blessing so you don’t get left out. Then,
stick around and enjoy the CYC 20th Anniversary
Celebration later that day. It will be a great start to
the 21st year of CYC events.

Asian Carp… both a problem and a solution.
By Bill Gary IV
The issue of Asian Carp invading our waterways is something most of us
on the lakes are aware of, at least to some extent. The fish are voracious
eaters of the basic aquatic food source: algae and zooplankton. Their
size and rapid reproducing can deplete a pond, lake or entire waterway of
this basic food source, which in turn, starves out the sport fish and other
desirable species. When agitated by boat motor and/or skier sounds,
these fish are prone to leap out of the water. Fish weights of 30 pounds
are not uncommon, and a fish that size leaping into your lap at 40 mph or
more could be a great deal more than just an inconvenience!
To promote awareness of the fish and it’s decimating effects, local photographer and filmmaker Glenn Hall (www.glennhallphotography.com) is
producing a documentary entitled “Dark Water”. Hall notes that the carp
range well of 7,000 miles through 13 states and are costing federal, state
and local governments – which is actually all of us through our tax dollars
– upwards of $120 Billion (yes, with a “B”!). The Lacy Act of 1990 and
the Aquatic Invasive Species Act of 1996 represent only two of the larger
government efforts to counteract the carp issue.
In an effort to protect our waters, Kentucky’s Fish & Wildlife took a proactive approach on March 12-13 by hosting the first ever “Carp Madness” fishing tournament. Open only to licensed commercial fishermen,
KY F&W offered prize money totaling $20,000 to be shared by the top
haulers. Brainstorming and overseeing this event was F&W Fisheries
Director, Ron Brooks. On
Wednesday, Barry Mann of
Gilbertsville took the top prize
of $10,000 for having brought
in 28,669 pounds of fish in
two days.
The total haul
among all the fishermen was
82,953 pounds, far short of
the 200,000 goal, but, according to Brooks, still a “success”.
Chef Philippe Parola
Although most of these fish went to a processing plant in Mississippi where they will be
harvested for fish oils and used in pet foods,
a few found their way into the Kentucky Dam
Village restaurant’s kitchen to be prepared
by Chef Philippe Parola. Chef Philippe has
prepared and served this fish as a delicacy in
Louisiana and shared his recipes and expertise with the KDV staff. The public was invited
to come sample, and my firsthand tasting verifies that the fish is delicious! Because they
eat zooplankton and not other fish, the Asian
Carp – often called “Silverfin” when served on
a platter – have zero mercury and are higher in Omega-3’s than salmon! The meat is
light and flaky and will take on the taste of the
spices or stock used to flavor it. The fish’s
downside is the bones, which make it difficult
to clean. But, with diligence and some training, the bones can be overcome. Who knows,
the curse of Asian Carp as an invasive species may, in the end, be the blessing of the
Slilverfin as a fine dining delicacy. “Oui, oui,
et bon appetite!”

Ongoing CYC Activities
As promised, this summer is full of events to get boaters of all varieties out on the water. Stu Schwalm your Fleet Captain for Cruising events has been hard at work this winter planning some of these
activities. His first fun filled cruise is coming up the first of June and
since I know how we start planning our weekends early I thought it
would be a good idea to give you a heads up as to what he has scheduled. Check out the calendar of events to the right for other great
adventures coming up this season and don’t hesitate to contact Stu if
you have any questions.
“Please take a ‘sailor’ to lunch.” Saturday, June 1, 2013
Okay, power boaters; it’s time to get to know the “other” half of the
CYC gang. You never know when you’ll run out of fuel and need
those sailors and their wind machines to come to the rescue and save
the day. Here’s your chance to invite an old or new found sailor
friend to lunch. Invite them onboard for a short run to a nearby eatery/watering hole for a mid-day lunch and day of fun with friends. If
you’re brave, you might even let them steer!
We’ll rendezvous just off the GTB Resort jetty and travel as a group
to HU-B’s at Kuttawa Harbor
Dream now, plan now and mark your calendars to be with us on this
date: June 1st, 2013. All-in-all, it’ll be a fun day to be on the water
and enjoying, the "Water-Way-of-Life”. Mark your calendar and plan
to join us on this cruise.

compliance with
state laws.
The Yacht Club

Planning a Romantic Get A Way or just some
quality family time does not have to cost a
fortune or require loading up the car and
driving ten hours. An affordable mini-vacation
is all right here at Green Turtle Bay Resort
and it all starts in one of our beautiful
waterfront condominiums. Green Turtle Bay
offers condos that will accommodate two to
eight and offers all the luxuries of home.
To The
Bay
For the couple that is looking to reconnect or
just take some time out for themselves, Jade
& Earth Spa offers couples massages and
packages that will relax away the stress of
day-to-day life. An evening by the fireplace,
a romantic dinner overlooking the harbor or a
moonlit walk on the beach will reconnect you
with the one that you love.
Or, for the family who has gotten lost in this
world of technology, it's time to put up the
iPad, video game and cell phone. Spend the
day on the beach playing volleyball, kayaking or playing cornhole at the family outdoor
activity center.
It's time to experience "Our Water-Way-ofLife" with the ones you love.
