Fifth Generation Leadership At Burris Logistics
Burris Logistics provides
temperature-controlled supply chain
solutions at all points of the supply
chain through four distinct operating
divisions:
Burris Custom Retail Distribution —
provides retailers with procurement,
warehousing, and distribution services
as part of a total distribution solution.
Burris PRW Plus — provides
refrigerated warehousing (Public
Refrigerated Warehousing) solutions
with added value services customized
for individual clients which are
primarily, but not exclusively provided
for food manufacturers and processors.
Burris Transportation — provides
freight management solutions for food
shippers, utilizing a network of carrier
partners as well as the Burris owned
fleet.
Donnie Burris
CEO
Honor Foods — a redistributor
of frozen, refrigerated and dry
foodservice products. While wholly
owned, the Honor name and brand
have been retained.
Founded in 1925, Burris has evolved
and grown throughout its history by
being agile, flexible and committed
to customer service excellence
and constant improvement. The
uniqueness of Burris can be found
in the uniqueness of its customized
solutions. Each solution is unique
to the needs of a specific customer.
These solutions are true partnerships
where Burris provides next level
services including shared proprietary
technologies, procurement services,
owned and consigned inventory
management systems, food safety
and compliance assistance, and
even builds customized facilities
and provides dedicated fleets for
some clients. All of these services are
designed to create value by partnering,
lending specialized expertise, helping
customers succeed, and at all times
meeting their needs - which is
paramount.
The company is currently led by
CEO Donnie Burris, who represents

services to our retail partners through
Burris Custom Retail.
As the company marks its 90th
anniversary, Food World and Food Trade
News sat down with Donnie Burris to
discuss the company and its place in
the industry.
Food World/Food Trade News: How
have the services that Burris provides
evolved over the years and what has
driven that evolution?
Donnie Burris: To start, let me
explain that the four divisions at
Burris Logistics are both separate
and complementary. We have four
specific business segments that cover
a wide array of needs in distribution,
warehousing, transportation and
redistribution. Up until the mid
1980s, we were primarily a frozen
food wholesaler based in Harrington,
DE. We added PRW Plus which
has continued to grow with several
locations up and down the East
Coast. PRW Plus provides refrigerated
warehousing solutions with added
value services customized for
individual clients which are primarily,
but not exclusively, provided for food
manufacturers and processors. In 2007,
we acquired Honor Foods to get into
foodservice. Honor is a redistributor
of dry, frozen and refrigerated
foodservice products. We also created
a separate transportation division to
supplement our asset-based fleet by
building relationships with carrier
partners, allowing us to handle any
size job a customer requires. This
addition allows us to go back upstream
in the supply chain and lower the
cost of goods by managing inbound
freight moves, which in turn allows
us to create a stronger solution for
our retail and foodservice customers.
Most importantly, we pull from the
core strengths of our company as a
Food World/Food Trade News: What
do you and your management team
focus on the most with regards to your
customers - service, value, etc?
Donnie Burris: First and foremost,
our goal is to deliver world class
customer service. Above anything
else, that is what we all focus on here
at Burris. We really mean it when we
say that our goal is to deliver all of the
benefits of self-distribution with none
of the headaches. The Burris family’s
commitment to exceptional customer
service goes back five generations.
Carrying the torch passed by my father,
Bob Burris, our company promise of
“integrity delivered” will remain an
integral part of everything we do today
and in all the years to come. We focus
on execution at every level, ensuring
timeliness and accuracy.
Food World/Food Trade News: How
do you and your team ensure that
Burris’ services stay in line with your
customers’ needs?
Donnie Burris: We are constantly
measuring our results. We spend a lot
of time with our customers, staying
close to their businesses, both at
their offices and in their stores. We
are always asking, “Can we make this
better?”
Food World/Food Trade News: What
is your view of the changing market in
food retailing and distribution overall?
How do you see Burris fitting into that
changing marketplace?
Donnie Burris: It is certainly
changing! When it comes to spending
our at-home food dollars, there
are so many great options today traditional retail grocery and club
stores, home delivery, c-stores, natural
and organic grocers. It really is an
exciting and challenging time to be

Burris Custom Retail Distribution Provides
Unique Solutions To Retailers’ Supply Chain Needs
“Burris Logistics is not
a traditional wholesaler
model, we are a
Custom Distribution
Solution. Each solution
is customized for each
retail partner.”
– Brian Haley
Vice President,
Sales & Purchasing
Today’s retailer is faced with a
variety of logistics challenges. Aside
from shrinking margins, downward
pricing and a more competitive
landscape, consumers’ tastes
are changing. With a higher
demand for healthy foods,
that means more pressure
on the retailer to provide
more perishable options in
more places.
Retailers have unique
needs and timelines that are crucial
to their success and to the way they
do business. Burris Logistics Custom
Retail Distribution was built to meet
those needs. The company has
deeply rooted values and a proven
track record that it can learn and
adapt to the way each retailer works
to ensure they get what they need
without giving up control of their
operations.
At Burris, the proposition is
simple, the retailer outsources the
procurement, warehousing and
transportation to Burris so they
can focus on what matters most choosing the right products, building
a competitive brand and creating a
great customer experience. Burris
creates innovative supply chain
solutions based on each customer’s
unique requirements.
As a fifth generation family
owned company, what makes Burris
successful is their passion for service
excellence executed through
their technology and team-based
approach.
Burris customizes, collaborates
and adapts. From high level work
flow down to facility design and
facility systems, they give the retailer
as much control over the process as
they desire. And when it comes to
transition, Burris makes it smooth
and seamless, relieving the retailer’s
supply chain burdens without
impacting their customers.
When a retailer partners with
Burris Logistics to manage their
supply chain needs, a customized
program is developed to meet their
specific needs. Brian Haley, vice
president of sales for the company,
explains it this way: “Burris Logistics
is not a traditional wholesaler model,
we are a Custom Distribution
Solution. Each solution is
customized for each retail
partner. We partner with
our retailers to design the
procurement, warehousing
and distribution solution
that allows them to focus
on building their brand, their
product sales, and share of the
market. Our service is provided
with total transparency and the
retailer has total control. The
relationships that we have with our
retailers and our vendor partners
is very complementary and totally
collaborative.”
Traditional wholesalers offer the
same products and services to all
of their customers. Fees are set
based on their determination and
often the customer is not given
the specifics about costs of doing
business with the wholesaler. As
John Teixeira, president of Burris

Fresh Distribution in Action: BJ’s Wholesale Club
The challenge: BJ’s has expanded
its selection to include fresh prepared
food offerings, sushi, raw and cooked
take-home solutions, and more
organic offerings in poultry, produce
and fresh meats. That makes it vital
for BJ’s to maintain “speed to market
in a rapidly changing perishable
industry,” says Jeff Parsons, BJ’s vice
president, logistics operations. “This

includes ensuring the highest product
quality for our members, accuracy of
distribution, salvage reduction, and
high service levels.”
The supply chain solution: BJ’s
outsources all of its perishable
product categories to Burris Custom
Retail Distribution through three
dedicated Burris distribution centers
and a dedicated fleet and drivers.
“Burris is exceptional at adapting
process flow to support our business,”
explains Parsons. “Burris consistently
executes to meet the demanding
perishable challenges by shipping and
receiving off hours and processing
last-minute order changes for
unplanned events.”

Burris Custom Retail Distribution - All Of The Benefits
Of Self-Distribution With None Of The Headaches
“Other companies
talk about customer
service, we live it. The
voice of the customer is
extremely important
to us.“
– John Teixeira
President,
Custom Retail
Distribution
from page 4
Custom Retail Distribution, explains,
“Historically, retailers have really
only had two viable choices for their
perishable distribution - they could
work through a wholesaler, or they
could self-distribute. If the retailer
chooses to go with a wholesaler,
they limit their control. Working
with a wholesaler also makes it very
difficult to separate the actual cost
of the product from its distribution
charges.”
Because the services that Burris
Custom provides are uniquely
customized to meet each of its retail
partners’ needs, it can evolve as those
needs change to ensure that service
remains at the very highest level
possible at all times.
Burris wants to be more than just a
distributor, they want to be a strategic
partner. Their goal is to work with
their customers to implement the
best possible sales and logistics
program for taking their products to
market. Along the way, every move
is made with full transparency so the
retailer is not giving up visibility and
control of everything.
For vendors, Burris Logistics
Custom Retail Distribution
offers a wide array of sales and
merchandising services. Account
executives and their teams manage
vendors’ products and plan-o-grams
at the retailer from presentation
to purchase, offering solutions in
category management, new item
set-up, promotional planning and
deal submissions. They use their
knowledge and expertise to help
with forecasting and conducting
sales and profitability analysis. They
offer line extensions that can help
improve brand recognition. They
can lend assistance with inventory
issues such as slow moving item
management and high value
inventory management. Additional
services include seasonal and holiday
product planning, solicitations and
pre-orders and store surveys.
Burris Custom Retail Distribution
is a fairly new division at the 90 year
old company. Explains CEO Donnie
Burris, the fifth generation of family
leadership, “Burris custom retail
was developed by pulling from our
strength starting out as a frozen
food distributor. First and foremost,
our goal is to deliver world class
customer service. As we like to say, in
custom, ‘you get all of the benefits
of self distribution with none of the
headaches.’”
The importance of customer
service is understood by the entire
Burris team. Teixeira makes it very
clear, “Other companies talk about
customer service, we live it. The
voice of the customer is extremely
important to us. If you ask our
customers, they know we have
their best interests at heart. As an
independent, family-owned company,
we take a longer term approach to
things; we’re not just working for this
quarter.”

PRW Plus - Providing Refrigerated Distribution
And Logistics To The Food Industry
Burris Public Refrigerated
Warehousing (PRW) Plus provides
storage and logistics services to the
temperature controlled component
of the food industry. This division
of Burris offers customer-
driven supply chain solutions
for producers of perishable
consumer products and their
partners in the retail and
foodservice communities.
The inventory in the PRW
Plus facilities is customer
owned. John Hochmuth,
vice president of sales for
the division, puts it this way:
“Like money deposited in a
bank, our customers expect to
withdraw 100 percent of their
‘deposits,’ making inventory
control our primary and most
valued service. Our customers
rely on our accuracy and the
availability of inventory to
make commitments to their
customers on volume and delivery.
Telling a customer we cannot find it or
we found it but it is damaged is not in
our vocabulary.”
With inventory control procedures
and disciplines in place, PRW Plus
focuses on primary services of
customer order fulfillment, export/
import handling and receiving railcar
deliveries. Our four core locations
can be found in; Lyndhurst, VA;
Jacksonville, FL; Haines City, FL; and
Lakeland, FL.
In the arena of import/export
handling, PRW Plus works with various
federal and state agencies (U.S.
Department of Agriculture, Food &
8
I Burris Logistics Special Section
Drug Administration, etc) to handle
the products, samples and required
documentation to export and import
various proteins and seafood products.
When handling an export shipment,
is committed to handling rail deliveries
with the highest degree of timeliness
and accuracy.
Many PRW Plus customers rely
on the company to accurately select
a mistake in the paperwork cannot
be “corrected and scanned” or a mispick simply re-delivered the next day,
accuracy is paramount and something
PRW Plus takes very seriously.
Three of the four PRW Plus locations
have the capability to handle railcar
shipments. The primary commodity
for this method of transportation is
frozen vegetables. One railcar is the
equivalent of three truckloads, making
rail an efficient and cost effective
transportation option for customers.
With that said, time is of the essence
when handling railcars to avoid
demurrage charges, which can eat into
the transportation benefits. PRW Plus
orders for distribution to their
customers. Explains Hochmuth, “From
ice cream for retailers to refrigerated
bakery and pasta products, to store
orders of holiday turkeys for retail
grocery stores, accuracy and on time
performance are essential.”
Why do customers rely on PRW Plus
for their distribution needs? Division
president Brian Kyle explains it this
way: “Anytime a company builds a
warehouse, it is only the correct size
at that time. Over time, the company
always finds it either needs more space
or less. Additionally, warehousing is a
cost and a headache which distracts
customers from their primary function.
PRW Plus offers flexibility in size
and labor and customers can utilize
our team in a variety of ways.” In other
words, retailers want to concentrate
on their stores; manufacturers want
to concentrate on making
product. With PRW Plus
handling their distribution
needs, customers can truly
focus on their core business.
PRW’s flexibility means that
customers can utilize them
for everything from the basic
in and out pallet work to a
myriad of value-added services
tailored to specific customers’
needs. The customer can
be as hands-on involved with
their distribution as they want,
or they can be totally handsoff. And when our customer
has those “special/unique
requirements” to serve their
customers, they can approach
the PRW Plus team to seek
solutions that will meet those
needs. “We don’t tell the
customer no,” said Hochmuth,
“we tell them how.”
PRW Plus is very unique
in the world of distribution
because of that flexibility.
“We are not just a run of the
mill provider of cold air,” said
Hochmuth. “If a customer has
a challenging requirement, we can and
will find a way to meet it.”
Underlying all of its services
and flexibility is the PRW Plus
GUARANTEE. As Hochmuth told us,
“We focus on a cliché – when we say
we will do it, we GUARANTEE IT! We
don’t make a lot of mistakes, and we
stay in front of issues. But, when there
is a problem, we own it, we fix it and
we make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
Kyle adds, “We are wonderful at
executing. Customers come to us and
know that there will not be issues with
our execution. Our team members
take pride in what we do, and rightfully
so.”

Burris Logistics’ Freight Management Gives Customers
A One-Stop Shop For Their Transportation Needs
Every supply chain is different.
Yet they are all driven by the cost
of transportation. Burris Logistics
can help its customers control their
transportation spend, maximize
equipment
utilization
and optimize
customer
service
performance, considering inbound
requirements as well as outbound
customer needs.
Burris Logistics offers truckload,
drayage and cross-dock services
specializing in temperature-controlled
solutions. In addition to its asset-based
fleet, Burris Logistics has a core carrier
base to facilitate truckload shipments
14

nationwide.
With strategically located climatecontrolled warehouses, Burris
Logistics is positioned to offer storage,
distribution and cross-dock services
that correspond with their customers’
transportation needs.
The transportation division services
the other three Burris Logistics
units - PRW, Custom Retail and
Redistribution - which allows them to
offer services to their
customers that don’t
have their own fleets.
This is another of
the many additional
services found at
Burris Logistics.
By supplementing
the Burris Logistics
fleet with its many
carrier partners,
the transportation
division can handle
any size job a
customer requires.
The transportation
division can partner
with specialized
carriers if a customer
has a need for
equipment or
licensing that is not
part of the traditional
freight management
plan.
“We are unique in
the industry. For our
dedicated customers, we are their onestop shop for their freight needs. They
know that we’ll get that load delivered,
no matter what,” said Maria Wittmeyer,
vice president of transportation for
Burris Logistics.
At Burris Logistics, their primary
goal is to handle transportation
needs for their customers, so those
customers can focus on their core
businesses. Their ability to manage
freight transportation effectively and
efficiently is of the utmost importance
to their customers. They use a routing
optimization program to recommend
multi-stop truckloads, which provides
the most economical solution for
customers while maintaining on-time
delivery performance.
Burris Logistics has also added
multi-temp reefer trailers to its fleet
to allow a single delivery to a location
of dry, perishable and frozen product.
That way, the customer deals with a
single delivery appointment to provide
product for stocking retail shelves
prior to opening.
In addition, trailers are equipped
with temperature monitoring to alert
dispatch of any reefer malfunctions or
temperature variances. GPS technology
on tractors provides real-time updates
of drivers’ progress throughout their
routes.
In other words, customers know
that they can rely on Burris Logistics’
transportation services to get their
product delivered on time, in
good condition and at the lowest
possible price. And, they do so in a
very customized fashion. Explains
Wittmeyer: “Burris Logistics provides
customized logistics solutions based
on our customers’ needs. We allow
our customers to focus on what they
do best, retail sales, and we’ll handle
the rest - procurement, warehousing
and transportation. Delivering product
on time is only the start. Burris
also partners with our customers to
drive efficiencies and reduce supply
chain costs through analytics and
transparency.”

Honor Foods’ Vision: To Be The Premier
Redistributor In The Northeast, Mid-Atlantic
Redistribution is a vital strategic
resource for many manufacturers. The
newest division of Burris Logistics,
Honor Foods, acts as a virtual
extension of the manufacturer. This
enables the vendor to service smaller
Tier 3 and 4 distributors that may
not be able to purchase in direct
quantities, and also provides a fill-in
option for immediate needs of larger
Tier 1 and 2 distributors.
The company’s mission is to be the
preferred regional redistributor in
the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic by
providing supply chain solutions to
their vendor partners and outstanding
service to their foodservice customers.
They are able
to do this by
being a high

sustainable,
profitable
results.
Short
lead times
allow Honor
Foods to function
as a “virtual
warehouse,” enabling
all levels of distributors to
offer additional products to
customers without needing to
keep those items in stock.
Honor Foods was originally
founded in 1949 and has
been operating in its current
Philadelphia facility since 1983.
In 1996, the company expanded
its reach to New York and the
Baltimore-Washington market
before being acquired by
Burris Logistics in 2007.
The next year, the company
expanded its area of coverage
to include New England, upstate New
16
I Burris Logistics Special Section
York, western Pennsylvania and Ohio.
Continuing its growth, Honor Foods
acquired Winer Dairy Redistributor in
Springfield, MA in 2009, giving them
another facility to complement the
Philadelphia operation.
With the Winer acquisition in 2009,
Honor Foods added dairy expertise
as Winer dealt exclusively in the dairy
arena, but the company’s roots are
deeply rooted in frozen foods. In fact,
the company is one of the largest
importers of frozen vegetables in
the United States and has in-house
relationships with European, South
American and Asian Food & Drug
Administration approved processors.
Today, the redistribution division
of Burris makes deliveries to 13 states
and offers pick-up in Philadelphia and
Springfield and services nearly 1,000
diverse distributor customers with
products from more than 200 vendors.
The company’s facilities house dry,
refrigerated and frozen products,
including a regular line of 2,000
SKUs. In addition, they will specialorder 2,000 additional SKUs based on
specific customer needs.
As a foodservice redistributor, Honor
Foods has two specific clienteles vendors and foodservice distributors;
they do not work with end-users.
Vendors see many benefits when they
work with Honor Foods, including
cost reduction as they are able to
outsource management of small, high
cost customer orders. Additionally,
Honor Foods allows them to increase
their penetration by giving them access
to new points of distribution through
the small to mid size independent
distributors Honor Foods has in its
network.
Vendors realize increased
distribution of their brands and a
reduced credit risk by working with
Honor Foods. The company’s team
provides vendors simplified logistics,
additional sales support, sampling and
new product introductions. Division
president Walt Tullis told us that
there are hundreds of new products
introduced every year and Honor
Foods plays a vital role in helping
vendors get those new products in the
mainstream. “New product isn’t always
purchased directly,” he explained. “So,
our role is important in helping launch
new products. When a new product or
vendor comes into play, we add it to
our inventory so that our distributor
network can learn more about it. We
are always looking for new products to
share.”
The advantages for a distributor who
uses Honor Foods’ services are broad
as well. They see shorter lead times
and more frequent deliveries. They
are able to have reduced inventories
and improve their turns. Honor Foods
does not set individual manufacturer
minimums, instead allowing each
distributor or walk-up customer to
take only what they need. Distributors
can get one order, one delivery and
one invoice for several manufacturers,
simplifying the process. Honor Foods
ensures distributors can make a fast
recovery from out-of-stocks and get
quick access to non-stocked products,
which means they can present their
customers a broader portfolio without
requiring additional space. Altogether,
these factors mean that Honor Foods’
distributors can offer their customers
vastly improved service levels.
As is true with all of the Burris
Logistics companies, Honor Foods
places a high priority on customer
service and execution. A strong
warehouse management system
ensures that they can deliver on their
promises. They recently added a PIMS
(profit improvement management
system) that provides a total cost review
of warehousing and transportation and
assigns costs to products and customers
that are not just averages but specific
costs for each product or service with
pinpoint accuracy.
The company enjoys an excellent
reputation in the industry. In a recent
customer survey, Honor Foods was
rated the highest in overall customer
effectiveness as measured by: customer
service, sales representation, product
line and company image.

Burris Logistics: 90 Years Strong And Still Growing
Burris has a story tracing back to 1925 when John W. Burris and his father,
Edward, worked together shipping tomatoes from the Delmarva Peninsula
into Philadelphia. On the return trip, they carried Acme Markets’ bread to its
Delmarva region stores. Throughout its 89 year history, Burris has branched
into foodservice redistribution, public refrigerated warehousing and custom and
retail specialty work.
Over the years, Burris grew through both acquisition and organic growth.
Today, the company operates 17 facilities along the Eastern Seaboard and serves
customers from coast to coast through its broker network of trucks. Burris is
under its fifth generation of leadership with CEO Donnie Burris leading a strong
team that keeps the company always moving forward.
Over the years, the Burris fleet has added the newest
technologies and equipment needed to haul groceries to retailers
across the country. This photo features some of the vintage
trucks that Burris used in its earlier days.
The company John and Edward
Burris founded in 1925 was originally
known as Burris Express. By 1939,
they sold their original enterprise and
founded Burris Foods, where they
began laying the groundwork for
eventually branching into foodservice
redistribution, public refrigerated
warehousing and custom and retail
specialty work. At that time, the
company’s fleet of trucks supplied
stores. These trailers hauled all
the groceries, bread and produce
for Acme Markets and A&P from
Maryland, Delaware and Virginia at
the time from its original facility in
Milford, DE.
By the late 1940s, Burris had added frozen
distribution. The company’s first freezer,
pictured here, was 60 feet x 60 feet x 10
feet and had a wooden floor. The original
freezer handled all of Acme’s frozen foods,
as well as inventory for the foodservice business that
Burris had recently developed, providing frozen foods
and ingredients to local restaurants.
Burris has always been a
family-led company. This photo
features John E. “Jack” Burris
(2nd from r) and his sons (l-r):
Howard, Bob and John. Today,
Bob’s son Donnie serves as CEO
of the company.

In the 1960s, Burris also
had another side business,
Burris Poultry, and Jack
Burris served as head of the
Delmarva poultry industry.
It was during this time that
KFC’s Col. Sanders came to
cook chicken for the Burris
family. Joining Col. Sanders
in this photo are Jack Burris
and his wife Lillian.
The early days of frozen foods were quite different from
today’s very modern, highly technological systems.
This photo, from 1948, shows Burris associates picking
Crosse & Blackwell frozen orange juice.
The Burris of today is much different from the company
founded in 1925, but its core values remain the same:
“Trend setting logistics. Deep rooted values.”®

in the food business. As all formats
look to satisfy customers’ changing
tastes for healthier options, more
fresh products, natural/organic, more
convenience, etc., this certainly drives
more SKUs and more complexity into
the supply chain as well as requiring
a lot of additional focus on execution
at store level. Our goal is to help
customers successfully navigate this
change by providing high quality, costeffective solutions to all this increasing
supply chain complexity and free our
customers up to pour their resources
and energies into delighting customers
and creating compelling shopping
experiences.
Food World/Food Trade News: What
do you believe is the trade’s image
of Burris? For example, many still
perceive Burris as a perishable food
distributor. Is there anything you
would like the trade to know about
Burris that they might not?
Donnie Burris: I think the trade’s
image of Burris is that we are still
a frozen food wholesaler based in
lower Delaware. Actually, we are
operating out of 17 distribution
centers today from Massachusetts to
Florida. We handle all products for
our retail partners, not just frozen
foods. We handle everything from
floral to produce to GM/HBC. If
our customer needs it, we will order
it and get it to their stores. Unlike a
traditional wholesaler, we are a true
partner with the retailer. We handle all
procurement functions in a completely
transparent manner. We handle the
retailer’s buying, warehousing and
store-door delivery. Our challenge is
to properly communicate this unique
supply chain model to the trade.
Food World/Food Trade News:
What are your expectations for the
company’s future?
Donnie Burris: Our annual sales
surpassed $3 billion about three years
ago, and we have had growth every
year since. I see us continuing to grow
at a rate where we can continue to
deliver WOW! service to our customers
and at the same time maintaining the
strong company culture that we have
established.
Food World/Food Trade News: What
are you most proud of as you lead
the family-owned business in its fifth
generation of success?
Donnie Burris: I am most proud
of the solutions that we have been
able to develop by working with our
customers, solutions that have turned

fragmented distribution systems into
streamlined, customized supply chains
that truly provide “all of the benefits
of self-distribution, with none of the
headaches.” Creating those types
of solutions only happens through
people who have a passion for service
excellence and a desire to help others
succeed. At Burris, we are fortunate
to have a company that is full of Team
Members who make this possible. To
me there is no higher honor than to
receive a compliment from a customer
for a job well done.
