Robotic-Assisted Surgery
at Aria Saved My Life.
“When I was diagnosed with lung cancer, my goal was to find the best surgeon
and a hospital with the most advanced technology to cure my condition. I also
wanted to get back to an active lifestyle as quickly as possible.
Center, located at 3110 Grant Avenue. The Center, renamed
Aria 3B–Northeast, serves as the Institute’s fourth location.

Since 1903, Aria Health has had the privilege
of serving the healthcare needs of our patient community.
Our entire organization is committed to Aria’s daily
mission of providing exceptional care to every patient,
every time. Fulfilling this mission requires an ongoing
review of patient needs and our services, and how we
align them to ensure that the members of our community
have convenient access to the care they need.
Aria also continues to expand the Aria 3B Orthopaedic
Institute with the addition of the Muscle, Bone & Joint
Thanks to Dr. Chang and Aria Health, I am cancerfree – back to my life and back on my bike.”
Providing care for a patient’s clinical condition is vital,
but providing support and services to lift his or her
spirits during their time at Aria can be just as important.
Sometimes there's nothing better than relaxing with a
beloved pet at the end of a tough day. Now, Aria offers
that same comfort to our patients through our new
“Paws for Patients” Pet Therapy Program. On page 20,
you'll meet Aria's first certified therapy dog, Bindi. The
Australian shepherd and poodle mix visits patients and
hasn’t failed to be greeted with smiles and affection by all.
— Genny, Cherry Hill, NJ
Aria’s network of convenient, non-urgent healthcare
clinics also continues to grow with the opening of our
second FastCare location, at the Giant Super Food Store
in Levittown, Bucks County. Both the new location in
Levittown and our first site at the Morrell Plaza ShopRite
in Northeast Philadelphia provide a range of non-urgent
care in a convenient setting—including evaluation and
treatment for the colds and coughs that are common in
the winter months. Read more on page 22.
Lastly, Aria recently launched its “Signs of Caring”
advertising campaign, which highlights a variety of our
clinical services. To learn more about Aria’s “Signs of
Caring,” get seasonal health tips, and register for a free Aria

As part of our expanded neuroscience services, I am also
pleased to share that Aria's Frankford, Torresdale, and
Bucks County hospital campuses have been designated as
Primary Stroke Centers by the Joint Commission, a national
accrediting body for healthcare providers. On page 8,
you can read about how Emil L. Matarese, MD, Director of
Aria’s Stroke Program, is working collaboratively with
support from the Aria and Capital teams to expand
stroke awareness in the community through unique
outreach events.
I was also relieved to know that Aria had a minimally invasive, robotic
surgery center that eliminated an extensive stay in the hospital.

One example of how Aria has expanded clinical services
in response to patient need is our partnership with
Capital Health and the Capital Institute for Neurosciences.
Together, Aria and Capital are providing comprehensive,
leading-edge treatment for stroke and other neurological
disorders to patients across Northeast Philadelphia and
Bucks County. On page 6, you'll meet Elisa Kahn, who
suffered a stroke at her home. Thanks to a remarkable,
collaborative effort between the Aria Health-Torresdale
Emergency Department team and Capital Health, Erol
Veznedaroglu, MD, FACS, FAANS, FAHA, Chairman of
the Department of Neurosurgery at Capital Health and
the Director of the Capital Institute for Neurosciences,
was able to remove a large blood clot in Ms. Kahn's brain
before it could cause lasting damage. Now she is fully
recovered—back to her life and back to playing the piano.
This is just one example of the exciting—and life-saving—
treatments we offer our patients in partnership with
Capital.
In addition, Aria’s Breast Health Program has continued
to expand mammography screening and outreach
activities. Each year, Aria, in partnership with the Linda
Creed Foundation, provides mammography screenings
and education to dozens of uninsured and underinsured
patients in our community. And, Aria once again marked
Breast Cancer Awareness month by celebrating the
courage and survivorship of our breast cancer patients
at an annual luncheon with a keynote presentation by
NBC10’s own LuAnn Cahn. To learn more and see photos

I traveled from my home in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, to Aria Health’s
Torresdale Campus after learning that Dr. Richard Chang was the only
surgeon in the region performing robotic-assisted thoracic surgery.
Recently named a Philadelphia magazine ‘Top Doc’ for
the third consecutive year, Dr. Richard Chang specializes
in the surgical treatment of diseases of the lung and
chest. He is also a member of Aria’s skilled surgical
team, which performs the broadest number of roboticassisted surgical procedures in the region, yielding
better results and fewer side effects than conventional
surgeries.

brain. Dr. Veznedaroglu made a small incision into a large blood
vessel in the upper leg known as the femoral artery. “It acts as
our roadway for all the vessels in the brain,” he explained. He
fed a catheter containing the Trevo® device into the incision
and up through the artery, through the carotid artery in the
neck and into the blood vessels of the brain, right to the site of
the clot. Once positioned properly, he released the stent from
the catheter, allowed time for the stent to engage or trap the
clot, and finally pulled out the clot. As soon as the Trevo® stent
reached the clot and pushed it aside, blood began flowing
beyond the clot to nourish Elisa's right brain.
“The Aria-Torresdale Emergency Department staff immediately
recognized that Elisa was a candidate for the next-level of
treatment,” said Erol Veznedaroglu, MD, FACS, FAANS, FAHA,
Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at Capital Health and
the Director of the Capital Institute for Neurosciences. In about
40 percent of ischemic strokes (the most common type, caused by
blockage of blood flow to the brain), Dr. Veznedaroglu explained,
tPA can dissolve the clot causing a stroke. However, the drug is
much less effective for treating a large blood clot—which is what
Dr. Veznedaroglu suspected was causing Elisa's stroke.
Elisa was the first patient in the United States to be treated
with the Trevo® after FDA approval.
lisa Kahn remembers waking up at her home in
Northeast Philadelphia and feeling dizzy, with a slight
headache, on the morning of August 8, 2012. As she was getting
ready for work, she fell. Her 14-year-old son called to her to see if
she was okay. Elisa responded in a slurred voice and told him she
couldn't get up. Her left side was completely paralyzed.
Until very recently, there were few effective treatment options
for stroke patients with large clots that didn't respond to tPA
treatment. Fortunately, the day before Elisa's stroke, the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration had approved a clot-retrieval
device called the Trevo® Pro Retrieval System.
Elisa's son called 911. She also asked him to call her friend
Eileen, a physical therapist, who recognized that she was
having a stroke and needed immediate medical attention.
When the paramedics arrived, Elisa asked them to take her
to Aria Health's Torresdale Campus. Immediately upon arrival
Dr. Veznedaroglu’s team participated in clinical trials of the
device and knew it could save Elisa's life. As soon as she
arrived at Capital Health, in Trenton, New Jersey, Elisa was
rushed to the angiography suite so Dr. Veznedaroglu could
view the blood vessels in her brain. He located the huge clot
that was blocking blood flow to the entire right side of her
As Elisa's story demonstrates, with the right teamwork and
treatment, many stroke patients can look forward to a full
recovery.
“This type of technology is really a game changer,” Dr.
Veznedaroglu said. “It saved her life and was able to ensure
that she regained a high quality of life following treatment.”

A classically trained pianist, Elisa decided to practice piano as
part of her personal rehabilitation plan. “I knew that my left
hand was a little bit clumsier than my right; I remember feeling
I didn't have the stamina,” Elisa recalled. She mentioned this
to Dr. Veznedaroglu, who asked how long she was practicing.
When she told him an hour and a half, instead of her normal
three hours or more, he laughed and said he would have been
exhausted playing for a shorter time. “I guess that's when I
realized how differently things could have gone for me,” she
said. “It is truly awe-inspiring that I am here.”
FAST TREATMENT, SPEEDY RECOVERY
Elisa's blood clot was removed within 90 minutes of her arrival
at Aria. Almost immediately, she recovered 90 percent of her
mobility. She began doing physical therapy to restore the
remaining mobility while at the hospital, and received approval
to start driving again within weeks.
“I was very impressed with the care that Aria provided,”
Elisa recalled. “What was especially impressive was how the
Emergency Department team at Aria was able to quickly
recognize that I needed more specialized care, and they
ensured that I received it as quickly as possible.”
“The Aria-Torresdale ER physicians really did a fantastic job of
recognizing the situation and acting swiftly on that knowledge,
taking it to the next level,” Dr. Veznedaroglu said. Thanks to
Aria's unique partnership with Capital Health, Dr. Veznedaroglu
said, team members at both hospitals treating Elisa were able
to communicate effectively, diagnose her stroke quickly, and
make and execute a plan of action. “This is a perfect example
of how patients are benefiting from this relationship,” he said.
“The way in which Aria and Capital Health integrated this
model is progressive in our region.”

STROKE EDUCATION, COMMUNITY
OUTREACH
Aria Health's Stroke Program, directed by Emil Matarese, MD,
a board certified neurologist , is a key piece of the expanded
partnership between Aria and Capital Health.
“Aria Health has developed a unique partnership with Capital
Health, partly to provide state-of-the-art, leading-edge care
for patients suffering acute neurological emergencies,” Dr.
Matarese explained. “Aria has been able to achieve Joint
Commission Primary Stroke Center Certification at all three
campuses, and, Capital Health, our partner in these efforts,
has achieved Joint Commission Comprehensive Stroke Center
Certification. In combination, this level of expertise gives
patients in Northeast Philadelphia and Bucks County access to
the most innovative stroke care available.”
“Our patients no longer need to travel to Center City, New York,
or elsewhere to get the latest care, typically only available in an
academic or university setting,” Dr. Matarese said.
“By applying evidence-based protocols, the patient presenting
with a stroke can be effectively and skillfully evaluated and
treated,” Dr. Matarese added. “Our hospitals have specially
trained nurses—with experience in caring for stroke patients—in
the Emergency Department as well as on dedicated inpatient
Stroke Units. Aria’s Frankford, Torresdale and Bucks County
campuses also have critical care neurologists on staff. In
addition, Aria’s Stroke Program includes a Stroke Coordinator
and a Stroke Specialist Nurse Practitioner so that we can
provide not only immediate care for our patients, but continuing
care and education for patients and their families, and we can
follow-up with the patients' primary care physicians.”
Aria and Capital Health launched their partnership two years
ago. Since that time, Aria has been expanding its services to
diagnose and treat a wide variety of neurological conditions,
from stroke to brain tumors. “We're tying all the pieces
together,” Dr. Veznedaroglu said.
Stroke education outreach is an especially important mission
for Dr. Matarese. “We're holding targeted, community-based
outreach programs that bring people together to learn their
specific risks and the ways to modify those risks to help
prevent stroke. We want them to be able to recognize the
warning signs of stroke and know they must get emergency
care,” he explained.
The outreach events have had a unique design, pairing
stroke education with entertainment at venues in Northeast
Philadelphia and Bucks County. For example, Aria, Capital
Health, and the American Heart Association (AHA) recently
held a stroke education event at the Campbell AME Church in
the Frankford section of Northeast Philadelphia. More than 100
attendees received vital stroke education tips while enjoying
the talents of gospel singer Cynthia White.

of Communications (Philadelphia and Delaware), American
Heart Association/American Stroke Association; Reverend
Glenn Sheppard, Campbell AME Church; Pennsylvania State
Representative James Clay, Jr.; Gospel Singer Cynthia White;
stroke survivor Pam Green.
In addition, Aria, Capital Health, and the AHA team provided
stroke education and screenings to more than 300 community
members in Bucks County at a special concert featuring the
R&B group The Intruders, who quickly had attendees on their
feet and dancing in celebration of stroke survivorship.
Aria and Capital Health also routinely partner at stroke
awareness events, where representatives offer screenings
for stroke risk factors. For example, Aria and Capital Health
recently were joint healthcare sponsors of the AHA’s annual
Heart Walk held at Citizens Bank Park, where they shared
stroke education materials with hundreds of walkers and their
co-workers, families, and friends.
“Our goal is for all members of the community, no matter what
age, to learn the warning signs of a stroke,” said Dr. Matarese.
“We also want people to learn that they must consistently pay
attention to their health and take care of themselves.”
Dr. Matarese added his own testimonial. “I'm from a family that
has been devastated by stroke, so this is a personal mission, not
a job. The partnership between Aria Health and Capital Health
offers the perfect opportunity to fulfill this duty," he continued.

stroke awareness. (Back row, far left) Emil Matarese, MD, Director,

Dr. Matarese is also working with Aria's Emergency Medical
Services (EMS) partners in Northeast Philadelphia and Bucks
County to provide education on stroke treatment, as well as
advanced stroke life support certification for all EMS staff
in the region. “I view EMS personnel as an integral part of
our stroke program, without whose involvement a patient's
outcome could be severely harmed. We view them as
important players on our team,” Dr. Matarese said.
“Aria Health has developed a unique
partnership with Capital Health...to provide
state-of-the-art, leading-edge care for
patients suffering acute neurological
emergencies.”

REACHING OUT TO THE COMMUNITY
With stroke treatment, Dr. Veznedaroglu added, speed is
crucial. “Every minute, two million brain cells die in a stroke, so
every minute counts.”

FUNCTIONAL NEUROSURGERY
SERVICE LAUNCHED
Aria Health is continuing to expand services to treat all
types of neurological conditions. Patrick Connolly, MD, FACS,
recently joined Aria Health as Division Chief of Neurosurgery.
Dr. Connolly's expertise in functional neurosurgery involves
operating on the brain to treat movement disorders such
as Parkinson's disease, seizure disorders including epilepsy,
chronic pain, and other conditions. Dr. Connolly is one of very
few surgeons in the area with this expertise.
“In terms of their culture and their mission, Capital Health and
Aria are completely committed to excellence in patient care,”
Dr. Connolly said. He added that Aria has been able to keep its
community hospital feel while expanding its capability to help
patients with more complex needs. “These are things we can do
now that we couldn't do prior to the partnership,” he says.
An example of the results of this expansion is for the
long-term plan to include a full-service, multidisciplinary
Movement Disorder Program. “Once fully evolved, the
Movement Disorder Program will include neurosurgery and
I will partner with neurologists, including Brian Kelly, MD,
Director of Neurology, Aria Neurosciences, and Physical
Therapists,” says Dr. Connolly. “In addition, we hope to
incorporate a movement disorder support group along with
neuropsychology services.”
Dr. Connolly also performs elective neurosurgical procedures
and supports coverage of Aria's Level 2 Trauma Center at
its Torresdale Campus. In addition, he recently performed
minimally invasive spine surgery at Torresdale.
“It used to be that patients would travel for brain and spine surgery.
Now, we do it here and do it well. This means convenient access to
comprehensive and top notch care,” said Dr. Connolly.
“As Director of Neurology for Aria Neurosciences, I look
forward to expanding neurology services to include muchneeded resources like the Movement Disorder Program,” says
Dr. Kelly. “This is just one more way that Aria and Capital
Health are partnering to bring highly specialized care to the
Northeast Philadelphia and Bucks County communities.”
Dr. Kelly and his team also look forward to expanding Aria's
outpatient neurology services to include treatment for
migraine, multiple sclerosis, and Alzheimer's disease, among
others in the future.

GROWING STRONG
MUSCLE, BONE & JOINT CENTER
JOINS ARIA 3B TEAM
W
hen assembling a winning team, you seek the
strongest players. The Aria 3B Orthopaedic Institute
did just that as it recently welcomed the Muscle, Bone & Joint
Center, located at 3110 Grant Avenue in Northeast Philadelphia,
to its growing orthopaedic network. The Center—renamed
Aria 3B–Northeast—is led by a winning team of orthopaedic
specialists with many years of joint replacement, shoulder
surgery, foot and ankle care, and sports medicine experience.
The team has had a long-standing relationship with Aria Health,
where the group has focused its surgical practice for the past 13
years. Now part of the Aria 3B Orthopaedic Specialists practice,
Aria 3B–Northeast continues to take a comprehensive approach
to both surgical and non-surgical treatments for disorders of
the bones, joints, muscles, tendons, and nerves. Patients are
receiving the same seamless routine care, pre-operative care,
and post-operative care at the same convenient location—3110
Grant Avenue.
Paul Steinfield, MD, is the Chief of Orthopaedics at Aria Health,
and founded the Muscle, Bone & Joint Center in 1990. He is a
board certified orthopedic surgeon with fellowship training in joint
replacement and sports medicine. The group has always focused
its surgical practice at Aria, and will continue to do so, but is now
officially part of the larger Aria 3B Orthopaedic Institute network.
“We're largely generalists in terms of the work that we do, but we
all have our areas of expertise,” Dr. Steinfield explains. “We see a lot
of patients with complex orthopaedic
conditions and develop personalized
treatment plans to address them.”
In addition to Dr. Steinfield, Aria 3B–
Northeast's physicians include:
Thomas Corcoran, MD

“We appeal to our patients because we're always there for them,
we get back to them quickly, and we try to accommodate their
appointment requests as quickly as possible.” Dr. Steinfield said.
“We offer surgical and non-surgical solutions to their problems.”
Patient education is also a key part of the services Aria
3B-Northeast provides, according to Dr. Steinfield. “We have
always had the philosophy that patients are best served when
they are educated about their conditions. We try to get our
patients involved in the treatment decision process. Much of
what we do aside from fracture care is treat pain. In treating
pain there is no absolute. When surgery is recommended for
pain, it is as an option, not as a directive.”
Aria 3B-Northeast's location at 3110 Grant Avenue marks the
Institute's fourth location in the region, joining sites in Center City
at the historic Curtis Center at 6th and Walnut Streets, in Bucks
County at Aria Health's Bucks County Campus in Langhorne, and
in South Jersey at The South Jersey Hand Center in Cherry Hill.
The Aria 3B Orthopaedic Institute was launched last year when
Aria Health and 3B Orthopaedics—led by Robert E. Booth, Jr., MD,
Arthur R. Bartolozzi, MD, Richard A. Balderston, MD, and
their partners, Philip M. Maurer, MD, Jack W. Shilling, MD,
Russell R. Bear, DO, FAAOS, Catharine Mayer, MD,
Jason J. Waterman, MD, and Garath A. Maenpaa, MD—
joined forces to provide the very latest in orthopaedic care.

ENHANCING EMERGENCY CARE
ARIA HEALTH EXPANDS
CAPABILITIES ON ALL
CAMPUSES
A
Most importantly, the patient community is benefitting greatly
from the newly expanded ED. “The patient feedback has been
very positive,” says Jones. “The ability for a patient to have
privacy in every room shows that Frankford really cares about
our patients and our community,” she says.
Quinn and Jones agree that the new facility is a top notch,
clean, modern and organized unit. “Lori and her team really
found a great way to keep the organizational flow going, to get
patients where they need to be quickly and efficiently, and to
continue to provide the highest quality care,” Quinn says.
Dr. Joshua Simon, Associate Director, Frankford Emergency
Department, and Lori Jones, Nurse Manager, Frankford Emergency
Department, working in new patient treatment area.
ll three Aria Health Emergency Departments (ED)
have had a flurry of updates and improvements this
year. From new construction to the expansion of existing
infrastructure to the creation of an innovative way to manage
the health of their patients, Aria has been busy growing to
meet the needs of the community.
FRANKFORD CAMPUS OPENS
EXPANDED ED
In early 2011, with the support of Aria’s Board of Directors,
the decision was made to expand the Frankford Campus ED
to better serve the needs of the community. With funding
obtained from a variety of Pennsylvania state grants,
construction in the ED began in the fall of 2011. Construction
projects of any size require careful planning; in a hospital
setting, planning includes more than the site: the patients must
always be considered. “We kept the patient in mind with every
move we made during this project,” says John Quinn, Executive
Director, Frankford Campus. “The expansion of the ED had
an impact on a number of departments, and the goal was to
implement a seamless organizational flow that would optimize
the patient experience.”
Lori Jones, Nurse Manager, Frankford Emergency Department,
led the project team, which included Dr. Joshua Simon,
Associate Director, Frankford Emergency Department; Sue
Mitchell, Director of Supply, Processing and Distribution;
and countless others who helped in the process. Jones and
her team meticulously planned out each of the four phases
of the project, while keeping both patients and staff at the
forefront with each decision. They did extensive research
on how to design user-friendly state-of-the-art emergency
rooms. They also visited other hospital campuses, including

University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), to get a
firsthand look at how other facilities were structured.
In order for the expansion to occur, a number of
departments needed to be moved, including registration,
human resources and physical therapy. “We moved
registration to the main lobby, making it easier for patients,
who can now enter the front door, register and move right
into our testing area,” says Jones. Physical therapy was
moved to another building, now allowing patients to park
and enter without having to cross the street. The transfer of
beds and equipment occurred smoothly.
The 18-month-long construction project was completed last
spring. The expanded ED now boasts 8,000 square feet
of new space; increased capacity, from 12 beds to 34; and
the capability of serving approximately 60,000 patients
annually. The new ED has separate ambulance and walk-in
entrances, as well as a rapid assessment area so patients can
be seen immediately.
The new layout is more convenient for patients, and the
staff has found the changes beneficial as well. The staff was
instrumental in providing input on how the ED rooms should
be set up, giving suggestions as to where items such as oxygen
masks should go. “We encouraged staff suggestions, even
going so far as having a mock ED room set up in the cafeteria
so staff could visualize what the new rooms would look
like,” says Jones. “It truly was a group effort.” With the new
expanded space, physicians and nurses are able to provide
patients with more private care.
NEW TORRESDALE ED SLATED FOR
SUMMER 2014
In April, the Torresdale Campus began construction on a brand
new ED that will occupy the ground floor, cover 90,000 square
feet, and expand the department’s capacity from 30 to 42
beds. As with the Frankford ED, the Torresdale ED needed
to serve patients more efficiently and meet their changing
needs. The ED had been operating at or over capacity since it
opened in 1977. It had been renovated twice; and, in 1999, two
modular additions were added to the campus in an attempt to
accommodate the growing volume the ED was experiencing.
Even with the incremental expansion, additional treatment
capacity was needed. Unlike the Frankford Campus ED, the
existing location of the ED at the Torresdale Campus was
limited by the actual physical space available for expansion.
After a detailed review, it was determined that a newly
constructed ED was the solution. With Aria Health board
approval and Pennsylvania State grant funding secured, plans
were soon under way.
Before construction could begin, it was necessary to
temporarily relocate the existing ED, including Torresdale’s

Level 2 Trauma Center and triage, within an area on the first
floor of the Pavilion Building in February 2013. Construction for
the new ED began shortly after and the facility is expected to
be completed in June 2014.
While the temporary area is meeting current needs, Aria's
looking forward to the completion of the brand new facility
and the many useful advantages it will bring. There will soon
be two separate entrances—one for walk-in patients, and
one for patients arriving by ambulance. This will allow the
ED staff to address quickly the unique needs of all patients.
Efficiencies will be gained with the addition of a new CT
scanner and two radiology rooms, enabling patients to be
easily accommodated within the ED. In addition, a separate
waiting area for patients awaiting test results is in the works.
The newly designed department and processes will also enable
greater efficiencies and should prove to be very advantageous
for patients. In late summer 2013, a topping-off ceremony was
held; this occurs when the highest structural beam is lifted and
welded into place. It is a milestone that signifies both a sense
of accomplishment and pride in the work that was completed
to date. Since that time, construction has vigorously continued,
with new milestones met each week.
Bucks County Campus Launches ED
Navigator Program
Also demonstrating growth, Aria’s Bucks County Campus
recently launched a nurse navigator program in its ED. The new
program pairs a critical care nurse with patients who are in
need of care that goes beyond a single visit to the ED. As part
of this service, the nurse navigator handles ongoing contact
with patients to address chronic conditions such as diabetes,
/ EMERGENCY SERVICES /
high blood pressure, and heart failure. Richard Galup, Executive
Director, Bucks County Campus, explains, “The nurse navigator
program allows us to focus on specific patients to ensure they
are receiving outstanding care during their hospital visit and
when they return home.” The program is free for patients and
is part of Aria Health’s effort to deliver the appropriate level of
care to each patient as quickly as possible.
The Bucks County Campus Nurse Navigator, Carrie McGill, RN,
often spends her day rounding through the ED waiting area,
talking to patients who may have questions. She intervenes
for patients who require expedited care, and tracks patients
from the ER into the hospital and then home when they are
discharged. “I always keep my eye out for target patients,
flagging anything that looks abnormal and checking for those
patients who may have a readmission condition,” says McGill.
When she has patients with chronic conditions, she calls them
upon discharge to make sure they are well and to answer any
additional questions they may have. She also verifies that they
are continuing with the regimen that had been established for
them while they were in the hospital and offers any at-home
education necessary.
Galup notes that, typically, when patients come to the ED to
be treated for something such as respiratory distress, they
are often nervous and confused about what is happening.
Upon discharge, the education and instructions they receive
are not always entirely absorbed. “When Carrie follows up on
the phone, she can review what was discussed. In their home
setting, patients can have a better understanding of their
treatment plan,” Galup says. McGill continues to follow up
with those patients whose conditions indicate that they are
otherwise likely to be readmitted in the future.
From left to right: George Flood, RN, Bucks County Campus Emergency Department Nurse Manager; Carrie McGill, RN, Bucks County Campus
Nurse Navigator; Harry Emmerich, DO, Chief of Emergency Medicine, Bucks County Campus.
The nurse navigator program continues to evolve, and will
be adjusted to reflect the needs of the patients who come
through the doors. With the winter season upon us, patient
volume in the ED typically increases. McGill can pitch in
where needed, perhaps handing out blankets and water while
patients wait. “When volumes are up, Carrie can jump in and
identify herself and her job as a face to the patient,” says
George Flood, RN, Bucks Campus Emergency Department
Nurse Manager. “When she follows up in a day or two, it puts
the patient at ease. When they are in the ED, they may not
realize they'll have questions later.”
To date, the program has been receiving very positive
feedback. “Patients can’t believe it when I call,” says McGill.
“They tell me they have never had anyone from a hospital call
them at home to follow-up and how nice it is to feel cared
about.”
Galup notes that the goal is for the patient to have an
exceptional experience, and statistics show that they are on
their way to meeting that goal. “Our patient satisfaction scores
have increased by at least 15%,” he says. “Clearly this navigator
program is having an impact.”
It is also having an impact on the ED staff. According to
Harry Emmerich, DO, Chief, Emergency Medicine, Bucks
County Campus, one of the difficulties about working in an ED
is that you get very little feedback. “With Carrie’s arrival, we
have gotten feedback from patients who are pleased with an
ED staff member,” he says. “It really makes a difference, both
personally and professionally.”
With an increase in patient satisfaction, a decrease in
readmissions and little-to-no wait times, the navigator program
has helped to close the loop in patient care by providing a
comprehensive experience. “This high touch level of patient
care is exactly what we are trying to accomplish,” says
Dr. Emmerich.
Throughout all three-improvement projects, personal care has
remained a priority. The new ED at Frankford, the expanded
ED at Torresdale and the Nurse Navigator program at Bucks
will not only enhance care across all Aria campuses, but also
enable patients to be served at an even higher level.

PET THERAPY PROGRAM
BRINGS JOY TO PATIENTS
PAWS FOR PATIENTS BEGINS AT ARIA HEALTH
I
f you happen to be at Aria Health’s Torresdale Campus
on a Wednesday morning, you may see an unusual sight:
Bindi, Aria’s first certified therapy dog, visiting patients.
Aria’s “Paws for Patients” Pet Therapy Program began this fall.
“There are a number of advantages a pet therapy program
brings,” states Brittany Speer, Aria’s Lead Transitions Health
Community Navigator and coordinator of the program. “A pet
can help calm patients down, lower their blood pressure, slow
their heart rate, and even make them feel as if they are in a
home environment rather than a hospital.”
Bindi, Aria Health’s first certified therapy dog, visits patients as part of
Aria’s Paws for Patients Pet Therapy Program.

see how happy
this makes the
patients.”

Bindi, a three-and-a-half year old female Aussie-doodle
(Australian Shepherd and poodle mix) has proven to do
all those things and more. She and her handler, Mary Lou
Cressman, spend time with those who request visits. Bindi
started helping patients two years ago when Cressman took
the dog to the Sacred Heart Free Home for Incurable Cancer
to see her stepbrother. He enjoyed the visits from Bindi
tremendously and very much looked forward to them. “Bindi is
a wonderful animal with a sweet disposition,” Cressman says.
“After my stepbrother passed away, I felt the need to give back
to the hospice center, and I asked if I could continue to bring
Bindi to see patients.”
The effect Bindi had on the patients at Sacred Heart led
Cressman to think about getting Bindi certified as a therapy
dog so that she could help others. With the help of an
instructor at Bindi’s obedience school, Cressman registered
her with Therapy Dogs, Inc. “The staff there needed to observe
us in a nursing home setting three times to see how we both
handled ourselves in that environment before granting us
certification,” Cressman says.
At the same time the team was getting certified, Aria was
finalizing details to implement the pet therapy program. “It
took us about a year of development to get the program
fully under way; by August, we began to look for certified
therapy teams,” Speer notes. Letters of invitation were sent
to local certification organizations, which in turn passed the
information on to their members. One of those organizations
was Therapy Dogs, Inc., which is how Cressman and Bindi came
to Aria.
Now, each Wednesday morning, Torresdale patients hospital–
wide are asked if they wish to be visited by Bindi. If they agree,
a sign is posted on their door. “Anyone can benefit from this
program, but we leave it up to the patient to decide if they
have an interest or not,” Speer says. “On a typical Wednesday
morning, Bindi may see anywhere from 20 to 25 patients.”
Cressman and Bindi spend about 10 minutes with each patient,
allowing time for them to pet Bindi and to talk about the
animals that they may have at home.
Feedback about the program has been wonderful. “It’s really
nice to see how happy this makes the patients,” Speer says. “It is
having both a mental and emotional impact on them.” Hospital
physicians and staff are also seeing the benefits of the pet
therapy. Speer notes that even some staff members have been
known to put signs on their doors noting they would like a visit.
Cressman and Bindi are truly enjoying the program and the
benefits they can provide. She notices that during the time
they are in the room, the patients seem able to put aside
their pain and worries. “Bindi is so sweet with them and she
brightens everyone’s day,” says Cressman. “It’s an amazing
feeling, what an animal can do. When I see the happiness in the
patients’ faces, I know we are doing our job.”
Aria is hoping to build on the program in the next several
months, with the goal of having several therapy teams at all
campuses. “We would love to be able to have a different pet
visiting each day of the week,” says Speer.
BENEFITS OF PET THERAPY:
• Helping to minimize the stress of a hospital
environment
• Calming a hyperactive child or stimulating a
withdrawn patient
• Helping seniors both physically and emotionally,
including dementia patients
• Lowering a patient's blood pressure and heart rate
• Bringing smiles to the faces of our patients

ARIA HEALTH OPENS SECOND
FASTCARE CLINIC
NON-URGENT HEALTH ISSUES TREATED IN
CONVENIENT LOCATION
“We see this as a great opportunity for Aria to bring healthcare
to the patients as opposed to patients coming to the hospital,”
says Richard Watson, Director of Business Development at Aria
Health. “We can treat patients who do not require a visit to
the Emergency Department and can be seen closer to home.”
Watson notes that the FastCare clinic has helped reduce traffic
and wait time at Aria’s Emergency Departments at both the
Torresdale and Bucks County campuses and frees up the staff
to tend to more serious healthcare issues.
“The private
atmosphere and
expertise of the
Aria Health staff
sets the clinic
apart from other
free-standing or
drugstore clinics.”
The FastCare clinic also sees patients who might not be able
to get an appointment with their primary care physician as
quickly as they would like. The clinic sends a summary of the
visit directly to the physician’s office and refers patients back
to their doctors for a follow-up if necessary.
The new FastCare clinic, located at 4001 New Falls Road in
Levittown, joins Aria’s original location inside the ShopRite at
Morrell Plaza on Frankford Avenue in Northeast Philadelphia. In
2014, Aria hopes to further expand its network with additional
FastCare locations in Philadelphia and Bucks County, as well as
offer patients additional services, such as monitoring certain
chronic diseases.

H
ealth care got a little more convenient recently when
Aria Health opened its second FastCare clinic in the
Giant Super Food Store in Levittown, Bucks County. The walkin clinic enables community members to have an easy and
accessible way to receive non-emergent care.
Staffed by Aria Health clinical professionals, FastCare serves
patients without an appointment and treats common ailments
such as allergies, cold and flu symptoms, sinus and ear
infections, minor burns and rashes, and other ordinary medical
conditions. Sports physicals and driver’s license physicals
can also be done at the clinic, as well as preventative care,
such as flu shots and blood pressure checks. Lab services like
urinalysis, strep throat, and pregnancy tests are also available.
The clinic in the Levittown Giant store has its own entrance
and the feel of a doctor’s office. As an added convenience,
patients can utilize Giant’s in-store pharmacy to fill
prescriptions or purchase over-the-counter remedies. “The
private atmosphere and expertise of the Aria Health staff sets
the clinic apart from other free-standing or drugstore clinics,”
Watson says.
The FastCare clinics accept most major insurance and office
visit co-pays. Patients without insurance can pay a low-cost
fee, which covers all lab work. “With the introduction of the
—R
ichard Watson, Director,
Business Development
Affordable Care Act (ACA), Aria wants to provide affordable
healthcare options to the community,” notes Watson.
So far, the feedback on patient satisfaction surveys has been
excellent. Patients are grateful to have the clinic in their
neighborhood and are thankful for the wonderful care the Aria
Health professionals provide.
The FastCare Levittown Giant location is open Monday through
Friday from 8:30 am to 8:30 pm; Saturday and Sunday from
9:00 am to 4:30 pm; and on holidays (closed Christmas day)
from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.

MAKING BREAST HEALTH
A COMMUNITY FOCUS AT ARIA
COMMUNITY-CENTERED CARE
One of the many efforts that sets Aria apart from other
organizations is its community focus. As dedicated as Aria is to
serving the women who come to the facility, there is an equal
effort made to reach out to local women and empower them
to take greater control of their health. For example, Aria offers
screenings, wellness classes, special events, and workshops
throughout the year. These offerings are often focused on
women or women's topics, or are of special interest and
particularly popular among women.
For the broader community, Aria sponsors outreach events
such as the annual Women’s Health Conference at the
Torresdale Campus, featuring a variety of presentations on
women’s health with a special focus on breast cancer screening
and treatment.
Each October, the Aria team kicks into high gear for Breast
Cancer Awareness Month with an expanded range of
community services and programs. “One of the best things
we do is offer free breast cancer screenings at all three of our
Aria campuses for uninsured and under-insured women in
the community,” explains Rahill. “These life-saving screenings
are provided by a grant from the Linda Creed Breast Cancer
Foundation.”
“Every October we also host a breast cancer event, which
reunites our talented physicians and the women who went
through our Breast Cancer Program and had all their treatments
here,” explains Rahill. This year nearly 100 women attended and
were treated to a question
and answer session by Aria's
physicians, and a keynote
presentation with local NBC
10 news reporter and breast
cancer survivor Lu Ann Cahn.
Aria is there every step
of the way, from teaching
the best self-examination
techniques and offering
routine screenings to
caring for women facing a
diagnosis of breast cancer.

Chief of Breast Imaging and
Breast Intervention, leads Aria's
Fast Track program.

F
or many women, striking a balancing between work and
home life is becoming more of a challenge, and focus
on health is often sacrificed to keep up with the demands of
everyday life. For women in Northeast Philadelphia and Bucks
County, knowing they have a resource like Aria Health in their
own backyard—one they can rely on to help them maintain
control of their health—can be a great source of comfort.
A MULTI-FACETED APPROACH
For instance, breast health, one of the most pressing issues
facing women today, is addressed by Aria Health through a
comprehensive internal and external approach. The facility
offers state-of-the-art technologies to help ensure early
detection—including a full range of breast cancer screening
options at Aria's Frankford, Torresdale, and Bucks County
hospital campuses.
In addition, Aria features a signature Fast Track program,
which accelerates the diagnostic process for patients whose
mammogram results indicate a need for additional imaging
or evaluation by a breast surgeon. “As soon as the need for
mammogram follow-up is determined, we notify the referring
24
clinician and let him/her know that the Fast Track Program
is available,” says Rosemarie Rahill, Aria’s Women’s Health
Coordinator. “The doctor then contacts the patient and an
appointment is made with the Aria Health Fast Track Program.”
The additional imaging is performed as quickly as possible to
alleviate the inevitable anxiety that comes after an abnormal
mammogram. If a biopsy is recommended, the patient is
scheduled with the Breast Specialist (Breast Surgeon). If the
results of the biopsy indicate a cancer or a high-risk lesion,
Aria’s multidisciplinary panel of cancer experts reviews each
patient’s mammography, ultrasound, and pathology slides
prior to the patient’s visit. This panel is made up of the breast
surgeon, radiologist, medical oncologist, radiation oncologist,
pathologist, and other team members. The panel identifies any
additional studies the patient requires, reaches consensus on
each patient’s condition, and agrees on a course of care tailored
to her needs.
Patients have the confidence of knowing that an experienced,
skilled Breast Health Program and Breast Evaluation Committee
are now collaborating on their treatment and following them
through each phase of care and follow-up.
“One of the best things
we do is offer free breast
cancer screenings at
all three of our Aria
campuses for uninsured
and under-insured women
in the community.”
Rosemarie Rahill, Fast Track Program Patient Navigator and Women's Health Coordinator, provides patients support throughout their treatment.

HEALTHY EATING
IN THE NEW YEAR
TIPS (AND RECIPES) FROM TOP NUTRITIONISTS
I
f you feel that the holiday season derailed your healthy
eating, use the start of the new year as the way to hit
the reset button. With these simple strategies from top
nutritionists, you can bake your cake and eat it, too…sans
guilt and those extra pounds.
With a new year upon us, you can eat differently to still enjoy
tasty treats while avoiding the pounds and guilt, says Kathleen
Levitt, RD, LDN, Outpatient Nutrition Center Manager at Aria
Health. “The key is to not let holiday eating carry into the new
year,” says Levitt. “Eat the way you would normally if you were
following a healthy lifestyle, with treats included in moderation.”
People get into trouble when they feel that they cannot break
bad eating habits, says Levitt. “It is very easy to adopt the
‘I’ve already fallen off the wagon so I might as well eat more’
mindset. Instead, allow yourself to still eat some of your favorites
as you begin to break less healthy eating cycle,”
In addition, stress, sleep, and how much we exercise all play a
huge role in how much we eat or don’t eat. “Studies consistently
show that people who get at least eight hours of sleep a night
are less likely to be overweight,” explains Levitt, who offers
regular EatWell workshops for the community (call 215-612-4863
for more information). “When we’re sleep deprived, we look for
energy from food, particularly sugar-laden foods, when what
we really need is sleep.” In fact, a recent study from Columbia
University found that when people are sleep deprived, they eat
almost 300 more calories a day than when they’re well rested.
If you’re a nighttime nosher, Levitt recommends steering clear of
the kitchen and just going to bed before you can start snacking.
Sleep, and getting enough of it, is also essential to coping
effectively with stress. With the long to-do lists we have each
day, stress plays a big role in our eating habits.
26
SIMPLE STRATEGIES FOR HEALTHY EATING
•K
eep an eye on your fat intake, says Somer. Fatty foods
mean a whole lot of grease entering your bloodstream,
explains Somer, adding: “Fat is a drain on your energy,
making you feel lethargic.”
“Find other ways to deal with stress,” suggests Levitt, adding
that it’s not always as easy as it sounds. “Take a walk, talk to
a friend, whatever works for you. You can even hold yourself
accountable by recording in a journal what you’re eating and
how you’re feeling when you’re eating it.”
“THE MORE
SUGAR YOU EAT,
THE MORE YOU CRAVE.
BOTTOM LINE: LIMITING
SWEETS CAN LIMIT
YOUR CRAVINGS.”
— Kathleen Levitt, RD, LDN
•L
imit alcohol, says Levitt. “A lot of cocktails are high
in calories,” she explains. “Alcohol also lowers your
inhibitions, making you likely to eat more at a party or
social gathering.”
“WHEN WE’RE SLEEP
DEPRIVED, WE LOOK
FOR ENERGY FROM
FOOD—PARTICULARLY
SUGAR-LADEN FOODS—
WHEN WHAT WE
REALLY NEED IS SLEEP.”
• Go to social events with a full stomach,
says Jodie Shield, MEd, RD, founder of the
nutrition website Healthy Eating for Families
(healthyeatingforfamilies.com). If you’re not
hungry, you won’t overeat, she says. But go
out ravenous, and you’re likely to eat more
than you want.
• Bring healthier dishes to winter parties,
says Shield. If you’re headed to a party and
aren’t sure if there will be healthy options there,
bring your own, suggests Shield. Good options: cutup fruit and veggie trays, mini turkey cocktail sandwiches,
carrots and hummus, and smoked salmon hors d’oeuvres. And
once you’re there, engage with people, not food, suggests
Shield. Focus on having fun, she says, adding that it’s always
a good idea to position yourself as far away from the food as
possible and to carry a glass of water in your hands to avoid the
temptation to nibble.
— Kathleen Levitt, RD, LDN
• Always eat breakfast, says Elizabeth Somer, MA, RD, author
of Eat Your Way to Happiness. “If you’re skipping breakfast,”
Somer says, “you’re more likely to binge later in the day.”
• Do exercise you enjoy—even if it’s just for a few minutes, says
Levitt. “Just get off the couch and move,” she explains, adding
that even if it’s just a 10-minute walk around the block or
marching in place (with high knees) during a TV commercial
break, it will help you stay on track with your eating and fitness
goals for the new year.
• Watch your sugar consumption, suggests Levitt. “The more
sugar you eat, the more you crave,” she says, adding that all
sources of sugar count in this equation, even so-called natural
(aka “healthy”) sources of sweetness like honey and agave
nectar. “Bottom line: limiting sweets can limit your cravings,”
she advises.
• Use smaller plates, says Shield. Whether you’re at the buffet
table or just eating at home, use salad plates instead of dinnersize plates and you’ll eat 40 percent less.
• Eat slowly, says Levitt. “Take time and enjoy the taste of
your meal,” she explains. “Take small bites, and chew slowly.
It usually takes about 20 minutes for your brain to get the
message from your stomach that you’re full.”

CREAMY, LOW-FAT FUDGE
From: Elizabeth Somer, MA, RD (Makes 48 pieces)
INGREDIENTS:
DIRECTIONS:
2 tablespoons salted butter
1 2½-ounce jar baby prunes
1 ½ cups sugar
17
-ounce jar marshmallow
creme
1 cup Splenda®
²⁄ 3 cup fat-free evaporated
milk
16 ounces semi-sweet
chocolate chips
¹⁄ 3 cup chopped walnuts
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
WHY IT’S BETTER
FOR YOU
By using fat-free, instead of
whole, evaporated milk, prunes
instead of fat, and Splenda®
to replace much of the sugar,
this fudge tastes just like the
original, but packs a much
lower calorie, fat, and sugar
punch.
• Line a 13-x-9-x-2-inch baking
pan with wax or parchment
paper, extending paper over
edges of pan. Set aside.
• In large saucepan, melt
butter over medium heat.
Stir in sugar, Splenda,® and
milk. Bring mixture to a
boil, stirring constantly. Boil
gently for 5 minutes, stirring
constantly.
• Remove saucepan from
heat, and slowly stir in
chocolate chips. Stir until
chocolate melts. Then stir in
prunes, marshmallow creme,
walnuts, and vanilla until
well combined.
• Spread mixture in prepared
pan. Chill in refrigerator until
firm, overnight or at least
3 hours. To serve, use the
wax/parchment paper to
lift fudge from pan. Cut into
pieces. Keep extra pieces
refrigerated.
