Volunteer Spotlight MARTHA BAKER I have always thought of life as a journey and the world as an open door. Even as a small child, I remember waking early, grabbing breakfast and running outside to explore the woods around my house, hoping to perhaps see a fox, rabbit or maybe an owl. Later my father’s Navy assignments took my family to new and exciting places to explore. As an adult living in Florida, I had four wonderful children who also loved to explore, much to my delight. In Florida I opened a small arts and crafts gallery where artists from Oregon, California and Texas came to teach basket-making, weaving pottery and even papermaking. After moving to Colorado, where two of my daughters lived, I worked as a substitute teacher, mostly in special education. Vacation time was spent backpacking with my son and daughter in Europe and South America and helping my daughter in Florida with musicals she produced to benefit local shelters and charities. I discovered Clements Center by taking a computer course and by seeing the volunteer opportunities listed. Here, I have discovered many kindred spirits who also love to journey, learn and explore. I have found warm and welcoming smiles and giving hearts overflowing with compassion, love and respect for others. I have heard stories brimming with good humor and good will, stories of great wisdom, courage, strength and faith. I have found shining spirits, gentle souls and friends in the truest sense of the word. It is a great honor and a wonderful experience to know them and call them friends. 11 Fitness & Wellness Classes BALLROOM DANCE HATHA YOGA Learn the basics of popular ballroom dances with emphasis on proper dance technique. Instructor Spotlight JACK KRUEGER I started my teaching career in 1960 in Parchment, Michigan, a suburb of Kalamazoo. I taught cabinet making and furniture construction and finishing. A short time later, we began building houses on choice lots on school district property with student crews. The houses were very honest and we had an outstanding reputation. Each student was prepped for the state of Michigan contractor’s license or “builder of credit.” After 22 years, the housing market went bad, and the economy dropped off. I then moved to Texas, which I found to be very different. I worked at a vocational school that serviced four big high schools. I worked with the school architect, who would dream up projects for us to build. The first was a saltbox-style press box, rest rooms, storage and concession stand. We built a 1,400-squarefoot building at each of the four high schools. We also built many concrete modular unit projects, baseball dugouts, dumpster inclosures and storage buildings. I retired from the Texas teaching system after 20 years with friends and wonderful colleagues, but most of all, super students. I spent the next four years teaching at the ITT Technical School in Houston, Texas. After retirement, I came to Colorado. I now teach woodworking classes at the Clements Community Center. I enjoy helping my students learn how to create projects and find ways to restore wood items that need some tender loving care. 15 Outdoor Recreation THURSDAY WALKS IN THE WOODS MODERATE & UPPER LEVEL HIKES Thursday walks are planned for folks who want to enjoy great scenery in Colorado without a difficult climb or too much altitude gain.
