behalf of the merchants and organizations of the Central
Steuben Chamber of Commerce, we are pleased to share
with you this 2015 edition of
the Visitor & Resident Guide of
the Central Steuben County region of Upstate New York.
Central Steuben County is a wonderful collection of
small communities, and our name more effectively ties
them together as one dynamic region. As the seat of
Steuben County, Bath offers a variety of local shops, food,
services and entertainment. Our region also includes the
communities of Campbell, Bradford, Kanona & Avoca.
Each has its own unique charm and would be glad to
have you!
Throughout the year we host and sponsor many events.
In May, we host our Community Expo. The expo presents
with Bath tub races in the morning. Then, there are two
performances by the NYS Lumberjacks, and then we top
the night off with a local band. There are tons of vendors
and fun for the whole family. We also have our Music in
the Park program that runs from the beginning of July
through the beginning of August. This is a free summer
music series that runs Tuesdays or Wednesday evenings.
There are 9 concerts in the many parks between Bath,
Avoca & Savona! There is a different band each week. You
can always check out the weekly line up on our Facebook
page and Central Steuben County website.
There is much to do throughout Central Steuben
County and our Chamber is a great place to start! If you
have any questions, you may contact Sara at the office by
phone (607) 776-7122 or email CentralSteuben@
gmail.com
We look forward to seeing you!

time to visit?

Finger Lakes Wine Country, New York is a year-round
destination. During the summer and fall, the wineries are
the busiest, as this is peak
travel season but is also a
great time of year in the Finger Lakes. However, during
the off-season of winter and
spring, your wine tasting experience is likely to be more
personal and comfortable. It
is these months of the year
when you are likely to speak
with the owners and winemakers themselves in the
tasting room. Each season
has its perks. Be sure to take
into consideration what you
would like to do during your
visit outside of wine tasting:
boating and swimming? Leaf
peeping and harvest festivals? Skiing and snowshoeing? Considering all of the
Finger Lakes activities available should give you a great
idea of when is right for your
visit to Finger Lakes Wine
Country.
How do you
get around?
5
While wine tasting, a designated driver is a must. If
you decide to taste wine and
get behind the wheel, be sure
to spit the wine out into the
dump buckets that are provided at each winery. Another
great option is hiring a transportation company for a
worry-free day.
Which wineries
should I visit?
With nearly 100 wineries
to choose from, how do you
know which ones are right
for you? First, plan on visiting between three to five
wineries in any given day.
You don’t want to overdo it
trying to rush from winery to
winery. Plan for time to become familiar with the wines
and enjoy your tasting. Many
wineries have great gift
shops and cafes to explore.
And make sure to allow time
for travel between wineries.
In order to decide what
wineries you want to visit, a
little research is necessary.
Do you like whites or reds?
Sweet or dry? Are you interested in fruit wine or ice
wine? With so many options,
it can become overwhelming,
but rest assured, the information is out there for you to
familiarize yourself with.

Industries in Bath
The Town of Bath is located
in Steuben County, the seventh
largest county in the State of New
York. The town covers approximately
96 square miles and is geographically
positioned in the center of Steuben
County. Bath is by far the largest
town in Steuben County followed by
the Town of Troupsburg at 61.2
square miles. The Villages of Bath
and Savona lie within the town, as
does the hamlet of Kanona. The Village of Bath is the county seat. The
Town of Bath lies in the southern
part of “Finger Lakes Wine Country,”
an area noted for its beautiful lakes,
scenery and ability to produce quality wines and grapes.
Agriculture has played an important part in the economy of Bath
through the years. The Steuben
County Fair, formed in 1819 and located in the Village of Bath, is noted
to be the longest continuously running
fair in the United States. Lumbering
and sawmills also played an important role in the development of Bath.
Babcock Ladder Company was
founded in 1905 by William Wallace
Babcock. Lane Pipe Corporation was
established in 1934 by Raymond T.
Lane. In April 1951 Westinghouse
Electric Corp was planned for a 73
acre site on State Route 54, Bath. In
1982 notice was received that North
American Phillips planned to purchase the Westinghouse plant.
Bath has been the location of a
Soldiers & Sailors’ Home/Veterans’
Administration Center since 1877
when the cornerstone was laid for the
first building of the New York State
Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Home and on
Christmas Day 1878, 25 Civil War
veterans were housed in the new facility. Since 1930 the facility has been
the federal Veterans’ Administration
Medical Center.
The Steuben ARC was founded in
1964 to serve area special needs individuals. Classes met in churches in
Hornell, Corning and Bath until the
services were moved to the Industrial
Park in January 1981.
History
Charles Williamson purchased
1,200,000 acres of land on April 11,
1792 from Robert Morris who had
purchased the tract of land commonly
known as the Pulteney Estate in
western New York, from Oliver
Phelps and Nathaniel Gorham in
1790. Mr. Williamson renounced his
British citizenship in 1792 and became a United States citizen, thus
able to own property in America. Mr.
Williamson built a mansion called
Springfield Farm near Lake Salubria
in Bath. Charles Williamson died in
1808 and the farm “passed into other
hands.”

PLACES TO SEE
VISIT } Mossy Bank Park
Mossy Bank Park, owned by the Village of Bath, is a gem
set in natural surroundings. Located just west of the Village
on a promontory 500 feet above the valley floor, the overlooks at the park provide the “Best little-known view in the
Finger Lakes”. On a clear day one can see the windmills in
Howard and Cohocton, and all the way down the valley toward Hammondsport, as far as the high point on Rte. 54.
And there is much to see within the park as well.
Established over fifty years ago as a destination for picnicking and nature study, Mossy Bank Park continues to
thrive with those goals as a guiding principal. A perennially
popular picnic spot, the park benefitted from a significant
update in its restroom facilities in 2014. That same year, a
new children’s’ playground, as well as an adult fitness
course, was added. Additional picnicking and recreational
activities like fishing are available at the near-by Mossy Bank
Pond site. Reservations for one of the park’s popular picnic
pavilions can be arranged by contacting the Village Clerk.
The nature study mission is coordinated through the Ted
Markham Nature Center which hosts nature-themed educational sessions monthly from April to October. The Nature
Center is open most Sunday afternoons during the summer.
Additional information on local birds, flowering plants, butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies, and other natural phenomenon are posted at the park kiosk. An extensive array
of hiking trails covers the upper portion of the park; and
more trails are being developed to reach the farther locations within Mossy Bank Park. Mountain bikes are allowed
but no motorized vehicles or snowmobiles are permitted on
park trails.
Local residents and visitors alike will enjoy visiting Mossy
Bank Park. Additional information about the park, featured
activities, and directions to the park is available online at
mossybankpark.com.

More about Mossy Bank Park
The land for the park, 167.5 acres,
was donated to the Village of Bath by
the Davenport Estate in 1958.
It was undeveloped until 1963, when
the face of the cliff was hit by lightning,
causing a forest fire that lasted for
days. Roads were cut through the
woods to allow fire equipment to reach
the site of the fire. After the fire was
out, the village board decided to develop the property into a public park.
The goal of the park development
was to establish a limited recreation
area, primarily for play, picnicking, and
nature study, for residents of Bath and
visitors to the area. The topographic
features of the park do not lend it to
more intense use, such as trailer camping, restaurant facilities, and playing
fields such as baseball and football.
Content courtesy of Mossy Bank Park
The park was developed to include
pavilions, picnic areas, playground,
restrooms, hiking trails, and a scenic
overlook.
The pond site of 14 acres was purchased and a 5.22 acre pond was constructed in 1966. It provides water for
fishing, outdoor activities, and fire

protection.
The Mossy Bank Nature Center was
constructed in 1998 to provide a setting
for indoor study of nature, displays, activities, and programs of interest for
the public.
The Nature Center was renamed
the Ted Markham Nature Center in
2007 to honor Ted Markham, an original park committee member, who has
continuously worked on the ongoing
park development.
The Village of Bath and various
grants, such as through the US Department of the Interior, Bureau of
Outdoor Recreation, have funded the
development of the park.
The park is open from May 1
through October 14, 10am-10pm.

Bath Country Club. Photo by Thomas Heffernan
The area that was to become
Steuben County in the last
decade of the eighteenth century was part of the territory
controlled by the Seneca Indians, the western most nation of
the Iroquois League, prior to
the American Revolutionary
War. For several centuries they
had been the dominant native
Americans in the north east. As
colonial settlements developed
along the eastern seaboard,
conflicts occurred with the Indians. At the time of the war for
independence from England,
the lands west of the Mohawk
River were not part of colonial
New York and held native villages and hunting lands. Major
Indian villages were located at
Canisteo and Painted Post and
only a few trails ran through
the wilderness. In the 1770s
the Senecas, who were the most
numerous of the Iroquois, gave
their support to the English.
Because the Indians made
raids on the border settlements
and took pioneers and their
families as prisoners, General
George Washington sent troops
under the command of General
Sullivan to the area to destroy
their villages and drive them
from the area. This provided
some of Sullivan’s soldiers an
opportunity to see the rich
river valleys and the fine crops
the Senecas were growing. At

EXHIBITS
The Finger Lakes Boating Museum exists for the
education and preservation of the rich history of boating activities and boat building in the Finger Lakes
region of New York State.
In 1996 a small group of dedicated antique boating enthusiasts, motivated in part
by a common concern over the
rapidly dwindling population of
locally-built wooden boats, committed to establishing a museum
that would preserve the boating
heritage of the Finger Lakes Region of New York State. The museum founders, all active in the
“antique boat world,” felt that a museum focusing on
the impact that recreational and commercial boating
had on the development of the lakes and tourism in
the Finger Lakes Region would increase appreciation
and awareness as well as help preserve these vintage
craft. The following year a provisional charter was

most of the wineries in the
Finger Lakes are
open seven days a
week.
During

and
spring it is important that you
confirm each winery’s hours as some
have more limited
tasting room hours, especially during the week. It is
most common for wineries to

around 5pm each day, including Sunday. Again in the
summer, some wineries extend their hours to accommodate the increased number of
visitors.

I stay?
Don’t forget
lunch
Before your day of wine
tasting, be sure to have a full
breakfast. This will not only
give you the energy you need
to make it through the day, it
will make wine tasting
easier and more enjoyable. For lunch,
many of the wineries have areas for
picnicking
that
offer breathtaking
views of the lakes
and countryside. Pick
up some sandwiches at
a café or deli in town and select a bottle of wine to enjoy

About the museum
The Glenn H. Curtiss Museum, bearing
the name of Hammondsport’s favorite son, is
located on Route 54, one half mile south of the
village of Hammondsport, New York. Dedicated to the memory of pioneer aviator, Glenn
Curtiss, the museum contains a priceless collection relating to early aviation and local history. The museum also features a 75-seat
theater, large open area for special events and
a gift shop. In addition to seeing the museum
displays and exhibits, visitors are welcome to
visit the Restoration Shop, talk with volunteer craftsman and watch them work on historic aircraft.
Glenn Curtiss began his career as a
builder of bicycles and then, motorcycles. In
1907 he became the “fastest man on earth”
when he attained a speed of 136.4 MPH on
his V8 powered motorcycle. An exact reproduction of this bike is one of several Curtiss

HISTORY
preserving HISTORY
Content courtesy of The Bath Historic
Preservation Commission
The Village of Bath is very proud to
have three historic districts and several
other individually listed properties on
the National Register of Historic Places.
The Bath Historic Preservation Commission is charged with overseeing
changes to the exterior of these examples of our historic past so that the historic character of the village remains
intact. Historic Preservation is not for
us but for the many generations that
will follow. What will they see? Buildings that have been drastically modified
to the point of being unrecognizable?
Gaping holes in our streetscape? Modern buildings next to historic buildings?
Or will they see well maintained historic buildings with original architecture representing our past? It is a
proven fact that in places that have well
maintained historic districts that the
economy improves, housing values are
higher and businesses are more profitable. As a gateway to the Finger
Lakes Region, Bath can become one of
the places that people come to visit for
its architectural and historic heritage.
It is the mission of the Bath Historic
Preservation Commission to preserve
the numerous historic buildings for future generations.
The Bath Historic Preservation
Commission meets monthly on the second Monday of the month. Anyone interested in preserving the historic
fabric of Bath is welcome to join us at
6pm in the Bath Village Hall. Current
members of the commission are Brad
Benson, Terry Bilancio, Chad Faulkner,
Bob Jeffery, Becky Stranges, and Chet
Wilcox. If you would like more information please contact Becky Stranges

CURTISS
Continued from 13
“June Bug” is one of several
historic aircraft on display.
Glenn Curtiss won world
recognition as an aircraft
builder and pilot in 1909
when he won the Gordon
Bennett Trophy for speed at
the First International Aviation Meet held in Reims,
France. During this flight he
achieved the breath-taking
speed of 46.5 MPH (he went
90 MPH faster on a motorcycle two years earlier).
Back in the states, a year
later, Curtiss again furthered
his eminence as a pioneer
aviator by making the first
long distance flight in America, between two cities. He
flew from Albany to New
York City with one stop, for a
total distance of 150 miles to
win a $10,000 prize and the
Scientific American Trophy
(again). In 1911 he mastered
the technology associated
with taking off and landing
an aircraft on water, thereby
making the “seaplane” and
later, the “flying boat”, a
14
practical reality. Seaplane
development led Curtiss to
an association with the U.S.
Navy that began when he
trained their first pilots and
built the “A-1”, their first aircraft. Today, he is acknowledged as “The Father of
Naval Aviation”. Visitors to
the museum will also see a
full-scale reproduction of this
first naval aircraft. Additional Curtiss aircraft in the
collection include a 1912
“Pusher”, a 1913 “Model E”
flying boat, a 1917 “Jenny”, a
1919 “Seagull” flying boat,
and a 1927 “Robin”. From the
Curtiss-Wright era (post
1929), included are a 1931
“Junior”, a ¾ scale P-40 and
last – but certainly not least,
a C-46, WWII transport (this
aircraft will actually be seen
first, because it guards the
main gate). In addition to
motorcycles and aircraft, visitors will also see antique
tools, toys, boats, home-furnishings, fire equipment and
much more. There’s something here for everyone!

Area
REAL ESTATE
T
he Bath-Hammondsport area is rich in history and
scenic beauty, and offers a wide range of real estate
opportunities.
Both villages have established historic districts and a variety of historic, residential, agricultural, recreational and
commercial properties can be found.
The properties also include year-round and seasonal properties along the shores of Keuka Lake and other smaller lakes
in the area.
The demand for lakefront property continues to rise, particularly on Keuka Lake, which is noted for its water quality
and its pristine beauty, and lakefront property values are rising correspondingly.
Both large and small farms are available in
the predominantly rural countryside, as well as country homes
that run the gamut from well-maintained stately structures to
old farmhouses in need of some fixing up.
Hunters and nature-lovers can find cabins on or near
game-filled wooded acreage.
Large and small parcels of open and wooded land can also
be purchased for recreational use or residential construction.
In certain areas, mobile homes are available for purchase
or rental in well-established trailer parks.
Within the villages of Bath and Hammondsport, residential properties range from apartments to historic old buildings, with short-term or long-term rental always an option.

took place. Many of the Indians and their families were
forced to flee to the areas
held by the English. Some of
the soldiers were to return in
the following decade to settle
in Erwin, Caton, Canisteo
and the lower Conhocton
valleys.
When the war for independence was won by the
colonies, the English abandoned their Indian allies. The
new United Colonies were
then able to begin negotiations for the land formerly
occupied by the Indians. Actually these lands west of the
preemption line, so called because it marked the division
between New York State and
lands to the west that were
claimed by the State of Massachusetts based on a former
grant from the King of England, were in dispute. By
1788, an agreement was
reached that allowed treaties
to be made with the Senecas
for Massachusetts’ agents to
purchase lands and when
properties were sold, then
they would come under the
civil government of New York
State. The sale of these lands
was begun by the Phelps and
Gorham Land Office and several parcels were sold by
them in what became
Steuben County. By 1791, the
success of their venture
failed and the 1,200,000
acres that became known as
the Genesee Country came
up for sale. At this time
Robert Morris agreed to purchase the tract from Phelps
and Gorham and soon transferred it to the Pulteney
Land Syndicate, a group of
English investors headed by
Sir
William
Pulteney.
Charles Williamson, a Scotsman, agreed to come to
America, take out citizenship
in the new country, and become owner of record of the
tract as well as land agent
for this huge Genesee Country. Williamson with his family and a group of 30 hardy
men came into the area and
began a settlement on 15
April 1793.

Bath VA Medical Center, part of VA
Health Care Upstate New York is located in the Southern Tier of New York
State. The Medical Center serves Veterans in Allegany, Chemung, Schuyler,
Steuben, and Yates counties in NY, as
well as Veterans in Tioga and Potter
counties in Pennsylvania.
The Medical Center, founded in
1878 as a Grand Army of the Republic
Soldiers and Sailors Home has proudly
served Veterans for more than 130
years. The facility provides a full range
of patient care services. We also provide primary and mental health care
through clinics in Coudersport, Elmira,
Mansfield and Wellsville.
A national cemetery with roots dat-
ing back to the Civil War is also located
on the Medical Center grounds. There
are five Medal of Honor recipients interred at Bath National Cemetery, as
well as 28 soldiers from the War of
1812, and a large number of Union Soldiers from the Civil War. Bath National
Cemetery also maintains Woodlawn
National Cemetery in Elmira, New
York.
