ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL DUANE REUNION
By Stan Barnes, President
W
ell, the 2009 reunion has come and gone. A
wonderful time was had by all who attended. The weather was beautiful for all the
tours that went off like clockwork.
We had a great tour of the Eagle, on Wednesday,
being shown above and below decks.
On Thursday we went to the Nautilus Museum
in Groton for an interesting tour. Everyone was
amazed at the amount of historical items that were
on hand.
Later in the day, those who signed up bought a box
lunch at Captain Scott’s and took it onboard The
Red Sky boat for a nice two hour tour on the Thames
River.
Friday we toured the Coast Guard Academy with
a very nice lunch on base. What can I say about
the reunion banquet, with the color guard and a
bagpiper from the academy? Everything went well
except for technical difficulties with the playing of
the National Anthem. Mary Ann Ricci bailed us out
with her own rendition which turned out to be better
than what I had recorded. Thank you, Mary Ann.
The food at the hotel was very good especially the banquet buffet. The rooms
were ok, but could not

the academy who really provided us with a professional backdrop to the festivities. We thank them for
a job well done.
I would like to thank Mike Walling (author of Bloodstained Sea: The U.S. Coast Guard in the Battle of
the Atlantic, 1941-1944) for his talk, and signing his
books for those who bought them. I would also like to
thank Bob Dinsmore for his talk on the Ocean Stations. Those who had not heard or seen his program
in the past were amazed at the information he gave
out.
Seven members of our WWII crew were on hand and
received flags which were flown over the US Capital along with a certificate of commendation from
Senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire. The
crew of the USS Leonard Wood (all Coast Guard)
joined us on Friday evening for dinner and talk in
our hospitality room with an ice cream social that
was well received. We thank Michael’s Dairy of New
London for providing us the time and ice cream.
Please go to the Duane’s web site to view pictures of
this reunion.
Taney work detail, fall 2009. My fall trip
to the Taney went really well. I was joined by Jim
Orrock, Tony Cangelosi and several former crewmembers from other ships. The port and starboard
main deck bulkheads and the 01 deck forward of

the bridge were completely redone as well as many
other smaller jobs. A good time was had by all.
In addition to the deck work, I helped Paul Cora
mount a plaque made by Jim Hitchings, a WWII
crew member of the Taney with all 280 names of
those who served on the Taney during WWII. This
is a stunning plaque and should be seen by all. Yes
folks, East Baltimore Street is still there but only
a block long.

restaurants. You will receive a welcome military gift,

Cove gift shop, 20% discount in Tom’s Island Store (a
convenience store/ grocery item excluded), 20% discount on military memorabilia, unlimited admission

On top of all that listed above, we will have discounted tickets to two shows that we will take
in as a group. Right now I am thinking of The
Carolina Oprey after dinner at one of the many restaurants at the Sand’s Resort and Legends in Concert (unless something better
comes along) Friday night.
The show will follow dinner at
Captain Georges Famous Seafood Restaurant (remember
Williamsburg) at 1700 so we
can be at the show for 2000
hours. On Friday at noon, I
have booked us on The Jungle
Princess for a two hour cruise
on the Intracoastal Waterway
with a box lunch of a turkey sandwich, chips, desert
and drink for $23.00 pp. Check it out online. There is
also a snack bar onboard. Saturday morning golf at
the Arcadian Shores Golf Course has been lined up.
Yes, all of this and much more for around $70.00 per
night. How can we go wrong?
I encourage everyone to call early to make your
reservations, don’t wait until July or August as we
need to know well in advance our numbers for room
blocks and advance tickets and seatings.
You can call the Sands Resort at 1-800-599-9872
and tell them that you will be attending the USCGC
Duane Association reunion September 15–19, 2010.
You can check all this out on the web at Sands
Resorts.com.
We are going to South Carolina to help those who
live down south to be able to attend a reunion without traveling way up north. So those of you who in
the south, this reunion is for you, personally.
