Parker Wins the South Pacific Junior Open
Tom Parker (Christchurch) has notched up his
first major win with a superb performance at
the South Pacific Junior Open.
The
inaugural event was played at the Tina Golf
Club in New Caledonia.
New Zealand Golf was invited to send a team
to the event that was made up of two girls and
two boys including one player under 13
years. Hillary O'Connor (Russley) and Tom
Parker were selected for the event along with
Inia Logan (Otago) and Darae Chung
(Wellington) to compete in the 54 hole stroke
competition.
Hillary O'Connor finished in fifth place overall and won the Under 17 section. The four players made up the
New Zealand team and convincingly won the teams competition by 10 shots from the Jack Newton Team.
Tom Parker was dominant in the boys field opening with a first round score of 71 before producing a 5
under par 67 in the second round and holding steady in the final round with 72 to win the title by seven
shots. "It was a great event that was run very well by the New Caledonia Golf Association, everybody was
very friendly and I really hope to go back there next year to defend my title", said 16 year old Tom Parker.
Tom has booked himself another trip back to New Caledonia securing a start in the South Pacific Open
Championship, which is part of the Australian PGA Tour, after winning the Junior Open. It comes at a busy
time with Tom also representing Canterbury at the Boys Interprovincial in Cambridge the following week
and then heading to play his next international event where he has been selected to play the Srixon
International Junior Classic being played at Cypress Lakes Country Club 3-7 October.
Woodward Cup & Pollock Cup Progressing Well
The Woodward Cup competition is set for an exciting second half of the round robin with teams fighting it
out to gain crucial points to secure a semi final position. Clearwater currently sit top of the table two points
clear of Russley and Harewood with Waimairi Beach, Christchurch and Waitikiri a further point back. Of
these teams Harewood, Christchurch and Waitikiri are still to have their bye. Last years semi finalists
Templeton have some work to do to secure their spot in the top four currently sitting in ninth position.
Competition is also tight for the Stan Rich Salver with a number of players in contention, with six rounds to
go this Salver as always will be hotly contested.
The Pollock Cup competition sees Christchurch and Russley as the only unbeaten teams through the first
three rounds. Waitikiri are currently holding down third position on the points table with both Harewood and
Clearwater yet to secure a team win.
SNAG Used to Introduce Communities to Golf
One of the main outcomes of Canterbury Golf’s
Young Person’s Strategic Plan is to increase
opportunities for families to get involved in golf.
Canterbury Golf took their SNAG Inflatable
driving range to the Rolleston “Have a Go at
Sport” Community event which saw in excess
of 1,000 at the event with over 300 people
having a go at golf with instructors on hand to
provide assistance.
“It’s great to be able to provide a fun
opportunity for people of all ages and ability to
have a go at golf, the SNAG equipment
provides the perfect platform with greater
success for those new to the game” said
Canterbury Golf Development Manager Rachel Thow. “The colourful inflatable driving range certainly
attracts a lot of attention and with ten hitting stations provides the opportunity for plenty of entertainment
for everyone. Follow on programmes were promoted to encourage people to take the next step to learn
the game.

on 14 August and after a frosty start got underway with a revised format of 9 hole
foursomes in the morning followed by singles in the afternoon. A field of 72 players
participated in the representative fixture.
The fixture for the Men provides some great match ups and again proved to be a close
tussle but the Town team pictured below took top honours in 2016 winning all three

Perhaps the rule that is breached the most in club and social golf is Rule 8-1 Advice. It is
not unusual for a golfer to ask their fellow-competitor what club he or she used on a par
3 hole before selecting their own. Some golfers would be aware that these actions are
against the rules but many just consider it part of normal club interaction. To refuse to
answer such a query for assistance would be considered churlish by some at club level.
U19 Players in alphabetical order
Rule 8-1 Advice is brief and to the point –
U16 Players in alphabetical order
“During a stipulated round, a player must not:
(a) give advice to anyone in the competition playing on the course other than his partner,
or
(b) ask for advice from anyone other than his partner or either of their caddies.

PENALTY: Match play – Loss of hole; Stroke play – Two strokes.”
It is important to understand the definition of Advice:
“Advice” is any counsel or suggestion that could influence a player in determining his
play, the choice of a club or the method of making a stroke.
Information on the Rules, distance or matters of public interest, such as the position of
hazards or the flagstick on the putting green, is not advice and is allowed.
