A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN
In my first year as Chairman of the SMJFL for 2015,
it has been a privilege to work with our executive
team & our 27 member club committees to deliver on
our new motto, ‘It’s About the Kids’.
I strongly believe, that WE, that is the SMJFL &
Member Clubs supported by their loyal gang of
volunteers, have delivered on the ‘It’s About the
Kids’ objective in 2015. WE have achieved this by
conducting more than 3,000 games of footy in the
2015 season, these games were contested by 399
teams made up of over 9,500 players, all kids, aged
between 7 and 17 & both boys and girls. That’s an
achievement WE can all be proud of.
Firstly, congratulations and thank you, to all those
teams that worked hard at training, starting in the
hot and dry conditions of February and March and
extending through to cold and wet conditions of July
and August. All that effort now culminates in today’s
Grand Final games. Congratulations and good luck
to each team in their 2015 Grand Final game. I
look forward to seeing & hearing of great contests
between two worthy teams.
Thank you to our band of over 350 League Umpires
who have worked tirelessly during the season
at training and on Sundays honing their skills.
Congratulations to those that have been chosen to
umpire in a 2015 Grand Final game.
There will be winners and runners up out of today’s
games. One of the SMJFL’s stated values is ‘Respect
& Tolerance’, each team and player deserves that.
The leadership to deliver this value, starts at the top,
it must emanate from team officials and then work
its way down to parents, spectators and players,
because we must strive to ensure, ‘It’s About the Kids’.
A special message to each player: I hope you,
personally, take time out to remember today, as it is
unlikely that you’ll ever play a game of footy with the
exact same line up of team mates and officials in the
future. Enjoy your day, experience and your moment
to shine on the big Grand Final stage of 2015.
Cheers,
Peter Ryan

SOUTH METRO JUNIOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE
INTERLEAGUE REVIEW
Overall Program
The 2015 was a very successful for SMJFL in the various
Under 13, 14 & 15 interleague competitions. The South
Metro Stars across all divisions definitely did the league, their
coaches and their clubs proud.
A big thank you to all nominated coaches, and ultimately
those who took up the role. All SMJFL Coaches were excellent
role models and performed their important role with the
upmost integrity.
We thank Hampton AFC and their army of club volunteers for
hosting two great days of football over the Queen’s Birthday
Long Weekend in June. The SMJFL hopes all involved had
an enjoyable AFL Victoria Metro Junior Championships and
Interleague Carnival.
Before recapping on the 2015 Championships, the
League is pleased to announce the appointment
of David Sheridan as the Director of Coaching of
the SMJFL Stars Interleague Program. David has
been appointed for the next three years, ending
October 2018.
David Sheridan, said of the appointment, “I am very excited
to work on the development of coaches and players who
represent our league in the AFL Victoria Metropolitan Junior
Championships and the Interleague Tri-Carnival. My goal is
to work with the coaching team to deliver a positive football
experience for all involved in the program. The league theme
of “it’s all about the kids” will be a central tenant. I want
every coach to ensure that each player is treated with respect
and offered feedback on the things they do well and areas
for improvement.
I am acutely aware of the significant contribution of
parents arranging their lives to enable the boys and girls
to be transported to training, matches and events. Once
we settle the final teams we will look to bring the parents
“into the tent” to ensure they feel part of the camaraderie.
Importantly, I look to working with the Sandringham Dragons,
Oakleigh Chargers and Dandenong Stingrays, to provide a
cooperative environment with the players’ development and
welfare at its heart.”
Under 13
The squad of 48 players was put together by players from 20
member clubs of the SMJFL. This is a great achievement for
the selection team, and highlights the range of talented junior
footballers that are emerging within the league every week.

Coach Bill Leggett expressed that “Across the two teams there
is an overall balance of athletic skills and football smarts,”.
This proved essential to the team performance throughout the
day long carnival held at YJFL’s home ground in Bulleen.
We congratulate all Under 13 participants and parents on a
fantastic first carnival. The Division 2 team played extremely
well on the day and were able to take home the Carnival
Championships, after the day of round robin matches.
Jake Bowey was awarded the Division 1 Most Valuable
Player for the Carnival. Lachlan Riley was named Runner-Up
MVP. Coaches Awards went to the deserving Liam KirkwoodScott and Darby Hipwell.
Nicholas Burke and Louis Butler received the
Coaches’ Awards.
Under 15
Whilst the squad headed into the Carnival missing as many
as nine Division 1 players from the previous year (through
injury and other school & sport commitments), both teams
improved overall against their Under 14 2014 performances.
Division 2 awards went out to Tom Williams for his 110%
effort at training and on Carnival day. Zac Buckley received
the Runner-Up MVP Award and Coaches’ Awards went to
Oliver Lord and Castan Racunica.
Division 1 Coach Nathan Beaumont expected the boys to
be having fun and working together towards having a good
footballing experience, and not just on the field.
Under 14
The U14s competitions against the Yarra Junior Football
League (YJFL) and Eastern Football League (EFL) were met with
varying results over the long weekend.
Coach Beaumont believes the Interleague is a great chance
for players to develop their football.
But both the South Metro Stars U14 sides had plenty to be
excited about.
Division 2: After grinding out a strong home ground win
over the Essendon District Football League (EDFL) in the
opening round, the Stars were looking to maintain their early
momentum. The round 2 meeting with the YJFL proved to be a
difficult task with the SMJFL unfortunately falling by 26 points.
The Stars entered the final contest requiring a big victory to
stand any chance of advancing to the decider. Their efforts in
round 3 were valiant despite the final result.
Division 1: After an early goal in their Round 2 match, the
Stars couldn’t match the speed of YJFL. Their dominance
across the field left the South Metro Stars struggling to catch
up. Despite the teamwork and persistence of the Stars, they
went down to YJFL by 163 points.
In their round 3 fixture, the Stars managed to stay in the
contest despite extreme pressure from the Eastern Football
League. In doing so, the SMJFL were able to kick a late goal
to ultimately seal a Grand Final birth.
The Under 14 Division 1 Stars were pumped for their Grand
Final challenge against Yarra Junior Football League (YJFL).
On Yarra’s home turf, it was an exciting challenge for the
South Metro Stars.
At the main break, the (U14D2) South Metro Stars had the
same amount of scoring shots however were down by just
15 points; SMJFL 3.5 (23) to Yarra’s 6.2 (38). The 15-point
margin was the closest any team had been to YJFL in the
entire AFL Victoria Metropolitan Junior Championships.
Award winners from Division 1 include Most Valuable Player
(MVP) Jack Mahoney. A brilliant team resulted in a four-way
tie for Runners-Up - Jehtt Brazionis, Joshua Le Grice, Jack
Toner and Riley Virtue. Coaches Awards went to Jack Neil
and Fischer McAsey.
6 | IT’S ABOUT THE KIDS
Most Valuable Player from the Division 2 team was awarded
to Tyson Murray, with the Runner-Up award another fourway tie. Exceptional efforts from James Adamopoulos,
Samuel Carney, Ethan Michaelides and Joshua Worrell, we
recognised with the award.
“The group has bonded really well,” Beaumont said.
“It can be a lot more fierce that what club football is,”
Beaumont said.
“It’s a good opportunity for the boys to work towards playing
TAC Cup football, or further representative football as they
get older.”
Division 1 Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the Championship
was awarded to Sam Forbes, for his excellent efforts across
all training and matches. MVP (Runner-Up) went to Joel
Crocker and two Coaches’ Awards were received by William
Kennedy & Hugo Read.
Division 2 Player Awards went out to William D’Amico for
the Most Valuable Player (MVP). Well deserving Adam Ossip
took out the MVP (Runner-Up) award, and Coaches’ Awards
went to Lachlan Jones & Flynn Wood.
Under 16 Youth Girls
2015 was the second year SMJFL have entered a Girls team
in the competition. After a challenging Championships, the
girls managed to end the carnival on a high.
The girls registered their inaugural SMJFL Girls win in the
Victoria Metro Junior Championships after beating YarraJunior
Football League 2s by 47 points. Final Score: 10.9.69 to
YJFL’s 3.4.22.
The girls singing of ‘Oh When the Stars, Go Marching In’
in the clubrooms could be heard from the boundary fence in
what was a proud moment for the South Metro Stars.
Most Valuable Player for the carnival was awarded to Leora
Elias. She was given a huge role throughout the tournament in
heading up the ruck of the team in which Coach Laura Kane
believed she performed spectacularly.
The runner-up Most Valuable Player of the carnival, Abbey
Goullet was awarded her medal due to her alertness during
training and for the games she played.
Both Isabel Molino and Bryanna Arnold received Coaches
Awards for the carnival.

8 | IT’S ABOUT THE KIDS
U14 DIV 1
The 7-side competition will be decided by the two most dominant sides as Beaumaris FC and East
Malvern Blue are set to meet for the fourth time this season. Both sides recently met during the semi-final
where Beaumaris ultimately won by 45 points – and while the Sharks have been able to win on all three
occasions by a combined total of 135 points – the grand final looms as East Malvern’s chance to win
when it counts.
U14 DIV 2
After a relatively even year, the top two sides of the regular season will meet. Despite earning top place
and the minor premiership, Ajax uncharacteristically struggled in their semi-final with Mordialloc Braeside
as the Vampires won by 74 points to move straight into the grand finale. Ajax took a different route to the
final and have been made to work hard for their place, however the players will be in their best possible
mindset for the final after an astonishing last quarter performance of 33-1 during the competition’s
preliminary final which saw the side overrun Hampton to book the ultimate reunion with Mordialloc.
U14 DIV 3
The top three sides were comfortably ahead of the rest during the regular season and it was South
Melbourne and Beaumaris FC who earned the top two positions and subsequently an easier run to the
grand finale. South Melbourne accounted for the Great Whites by 37 points in the semi-final to earn a
place in the final while third-placed Oakleigh snuck by Northvale with a 14-point win, and ultimately
overcame Beaumaris by 4 goals in the preliminary final, thereby eliminating the Great Whites in straight
sets to book a final meeting with South Melbourne.
U14 DIV 4
Bentleigh and St Kilda earned their places in the final under varying circumstances. After finishing
the season in the top two, the sides had a semi-final meeting where St Kilda comfortably won by
71 points. With St Kilda having already earned a place in the Grand Final, Bentleigh were forced
to play the Waverley Park in the preliminary final and defeated the Hawks by 65 points to earn a
rematch with the Saints.
U14 DIV 5
Hampton Rovers AFC and Prahran JFC will meet during the final after successfully overcoming their
respective paths. The sides met during the semi-final where the Rovers proved too strong in winning by
79 points with 33-4 scoring shots. Ultimately, Prahran managed to bounce back with a 17-point win
over South Melbourne in the competition’s preliminary final to ensure the top two sides of the league will
be playing for the premiership.

SMJFL UMPIRES UPDATE
Did you know that just like the players from all 27 league
clubs, our umpires also have a presentation night and are
acknowledged for having wonderful seasons? Like the
players we have a whole lot of awards, recognising those
who have done particularly well, and the night is attended
by umpires, parents, mentors, coaches and special guests.
This year we had AFL field umpire Rob O’Gorman as guest
speaker. Rob began his umpiring career with our league
in 2002, and three years later joined the VAFA. In 2007,
he was selected onto the VFL list, umpiring TAC Cup & VFL
Development League before making his VFL Senior debut
in 2010. He umpired 50 VFL Senior games including the
2013 VFL Grand Final and was one of only two umpires to
be promoted onto the AFL senior list in 2014. Rob made his
AFL debut in Round 7 when Hawthorn played St Kilda at
the MCG and now into his second season has umpired over
25 games.
Rob gave a terrific speech to our umpiring group, telling
them that if they work hard, and really want to achieve
their goals that they are obtainable. He spoke of umpiring
as not just a way to gain extra cash and get fit (although
that’s why many of our umpires begin), but also as a
way of developing, confidence, communication and timemanagement skills which are invaluable as umpires progress
from school into adult jobs.
Congratulations to all of our award winners at
the Umpires Presentation Night held on the 18th
August.

EAST MALVERN KNIGHTS IN U16 CHAMPIONSHIPS
East Malvern JFC players Gus Styles, Isaac Morrisby
and Jack Higgins played in the NAB U16 Draft AFL U16
competition up in Queensland during the winter school
holidays.
Through a tough selection process, the boys were chosen
to play in the championship, with a chance to represent the
Victorian Metro team in the national competition.
In round one the Vic Metro team couldn’t hold off the South
Australian team, going down by 26 points, but the Vic
Metro team worked hard in the match and were prepared
for the levels that the upcoming matches were going to
played at.
Round two saw the Knights boys and their team play Vic
Country. The Metro boys again played a difficult match
against a hard side and weren’t able to snag the victory,
being defeated by 19 points.
In their final match, the boys played Western Australia. Both
Higgins and Morrisby scored goals in the match and the Vic
Metro team ultimately sealed victory by 69 points.
Despite playing some great matches in the competition,
particularly in their round three win against WA, the
Vic Country team was a dominant force throughout the
championship and ultimately won the competition overall.
Higgins was also deemed the Best and Fairest player for
the entire competition across all the states for Division 1,
winning the Kevin Sheehan medal.
East Malvern JFC Secretary Andrew Close believes it is
an outstanding achievement for all the boys to play in
the competition and Higgins’ medal is “one that ranks as
possibly the highest individual achievement at our club”.
However being part of the competition for the three boys is
a testament to their football skills.
Playing great sides and other skilled players across the
country is a great opportunity for players to further develop
skills and learn about high performance AFL games.
The three players had a bit of a chat to SMJFL about
the competition and what it was like playing in the
championship.
Gus Styles
How did you keep yourself motivated through the
trials and selection process?
The selection process was a draining experience, both
physically and mentally, trying to stay motivated was
challenging at times. Having a goal to aim towards for each
session helped in staying focused on the overall objective.
What was it like playing with two of your EMJFC
teammates in the competition?
It was great to share the experience with Jack and Isaac,
having developed together over the past few years
especially. Seeing Jack succeed like he did was also a credit
to his remarkable work ethic - highly deserving.
22 | IT’S ABOUT THE KIDS
How did you enjoy the competition?
Playing with and against such high quality footballers
throughout the competition provided the opportunity to learn
off others. The week was intense, as we had somewhat of
an insight into how much preparation is required to compete
at such a high level.
What was your favourite match of the
competition?
The match against South Australia was my favourite. We
showed what football we were capable of. Our first half of
football was exciting to be a part of and although we ended
up conceding a loss, our group took a lot of confidence out
of the match.
Isaac Morrisby
How did you keep yourself motivated through the
trials and selection process?
I kept myself motivated because I knew there would be a
good reward if I worked hard (making the side).
What was it like playing with two of your EMJFC
teammates in the competition?
It was good playing with two East Malvern Knights’
teammates because I obviously know their game reasonably
well and rely on them kicking me the ball.
How did you enjoy the competition?
I really enjoyed competition meeting new people and
making new mates.
What was your favourite match of the
competition?
My favourite match would have to be against WA when we
won our first game of the championship.
Jack Higgins
How did you keep yourself motivated through the
trials and selection process?
It was easy to keep motivated, as I love playing football and
my teammates and coaches were great to work with. The
chance to represent Vic Metro was motivating enough.
What was it like playing with two of your EMJFC
teammates in the competition?
Fantastic as we are good mates, also great to play
alongside other SMJFL players.
How did you enjoy the competition?
Loved playing the Nationals, such a positive experience and
I learned heaps from all the coaches.
What was your favourite match of the competition?
Enjoyed each game, we worked as a team and developed
our footy.
SMJFL along with the Mighty Knights congratulate the boys
and all other SMJFL players playing in the leagues across
the U16 championships - the highest level for U16 boys.

MCDONALD’S U15 DIV 1
East Sandringham narrowly edged Waverley Park to place second during the
regular season, ultimately earning a fixture with minor premiers St Kilda City. East
Sandringham brought their best brand of football to the contest thereby earning a
grand final place with a 45-point win. However, the Saints bounced back during
the preliminary final, defeating the Hawks by 44 points to earn a rematch with
the in-form Zebras.
MCDONALD’S U15 DIV 2
East Malvern Blue and Bentleigh met during the first semi-final where East Malvern
accounted for the Demons in a close-fought game by 16 points to earn a grand
final berth. The minor premiers were then forced to do it tough, coming from behind
during the preliminary final to defeat East Brighton by 22 points. They were both
evenly matched in their semi-final, but the Demons will be keen to make up for lost
time at Mentone Grammar.
MCDONALD’S U15 DIV 3
St Peters comfortably accounted for St Kilda City by 47 points during their semi-final
to qualify for the grand final. Ultimately, the Saints also managed to qualify after a
nail-biting 8-point win over Oakleigh during the competition’s preliminary final With
only one loss separating St Kilda from the top St Peters, both teams will be keen for
an impressive showdown.
MCDONALD’S U15 DIV 4
Ormond JFC defeated the Caulfield Bears by 40 points during the semi-final stage
to book a place in the grand final. Their opponents, Waverley Park, overcame
East Malvern by 20 during the semi-finals and came back from the brink to defeat
Caulfield by 6 points in the preliminary final. Now they are facing off against
Ormond, who have been the dominant side of the season. But after taking down
the second team, Waverley should be feeling pretty confident.

FEMALE FOOTY IS GROWING, BUT “WE NEED TO KEEP GOING”
Girls’ football across the SMJFL community continues to
grow. The girls team in the SMJFL Interleague took out
their first win ever in this year’s competition, with the
skill and participation levels building across the league.
At the professional end of the spectrum, the second of
the two women’s AFL exhibition matches played last
weekend was broadcasted live on Channel 7.
With talks of a national league, the prospects of junior
girls playing senior footy are exciting.
Chyloe Kurdas, Female Football Development
Manager at AFL Victoria, thinks the levels these girls
are now playing is unbelievable.
“It’s quite remarkable the standard of football that
these girls play,” Kurdas said.
“We had the Herald Sun Shield girls grand final
played as a double-header to an AFL game for the first
time ever.
“What that says is that there are more girls taking
up more opportunities to play school footy whether
that’s to develop their skills or have a kick with their
girlfriends or whether it’s playing in competitions.
“If you go and watch youth girls, or even junior girls
play on the weekend, the standard of footy is so much
better.”
Kurdas also agrees the amount of the girls’ playing
footy is building, with every part of the game showing
growth.
“It positions us very well for what we hope to achieve
next for the national and high performance [games],”
Kurdas says.
“We used to just talk youth girls didn’t we?
“But of course now we have junior girls, and of course
we have growth in open age women’s footy.”
2015 marks 50 years of women’s participation in AFL,
with 35 years of a national women’s league. With the
two exhibition matches this year, girls are getting more
and more opportunities to play with an increased
focus on the game from the AFL.
However the work is certainly far from over if the aim
of a national competition is to be realised for female
footballers.
“I think a lot of interest is being shown at the top-end,
the AFL end which is important. But to complement
that, we need to do a lot of work and keep focusing
36 | IT’S ABOUT THE KIDS
on a really strong base at community level,” Kurdas
said.
“We need clubs to commit to putting their hand up
and keep having a vertical pathway within their clubs.
“Establishing an under 9s team, that’ll become an
under 12s team, then the following year that’ll become
an under 15.
“You don’t have to do it all at once but you do one
bit at a time and what that will do it fuel and seed the
next bit and it happens organically.”
Kurdas’ proof of the dominant female interest in
football stems from the amount of girls who come to
Auskick.
“We have more girls every year across the state
coming to Auskick than any other segment of the game
every year,” Kurdas said.
“But we’re only retaining about 30 per cent of them.
“We’re getting a touch point in female footy, but we’re
not really capitalising on the interest that comes with it.”
However there is plenty that clubs, Auskick centres
and players can do to ensure that the environment is
beneficial to girls wanting to play football.
“The reason why we’ve had such great growth in
female footy across the state in the last 11 and 12
years has been because we’ve set up all female
participation experiences within an integrated
environment,” Kurdas said
“We need to do the same in Auskick - Where we
establish all female groups within a mixed sex Auskick
centre.
“Capitalise on that massive interest that comes into
Auskick by setting up an all girls group, creating the
right environment that girls need and desire, then
retaining those girls, moving them into senior footy
and the community football pathway.”
“We need about 250,000 community football
participants across the country if we’re going to be
really strong and viable women’s national league so
we’ve got a lot of work to do at community level.”
-

opportunities for female footballers at SMJFL, check out

MELBOURNE FC U15 GIRLS DIV 1
St Peters were able to win their semi-final and earn direct entry into
the final while Prahran took the longer route to the grand final with
wins over Beaumaris and St Bedes Mentone. Despite sitting outside
the top two during the regular season, Prahran have proved their
worth and will be solid competition for St Peters.
MELBOURNE FC U15 GIRLS DIV 2
Brighton Beach topped the ladder during the season subsequently
receiving a favourable draw and opportunity to move directly to the
grand final. The Kangaroos achieved this by defeating the Hawks by
35 points. Their final opponents, Bentleigh, defeated Mt Waverley
and Waverley Park by 33 and 13 points respectively en-route to final.

PREVIEW
The East Brighton Vampirettes (SMJFL) are through to
the U18 Youth Girls Grand Final, facing off against the
Whitehorse Colts (YJFL).
For the 2015 season, the U18 Youth Girls competition at
SMJFL are playing within the Yarra Junior Football League,
to allow for a fully supported and developed Youth Girls
competition for both the leagues.
The EBVJFC Girls are undefeated for the competition
this year, with all of the Girls working extremely hard
to continue their winning streak. In the semi-final, the
Vampirettes had a strong victory over the Highett Doggies
(SMJFL), who just couldn’t match the East Brighton Girls’
kicking power. The Vampirettes claimed victory 11.6.72 to
the Bulldogs 1.0.6.
Second-placed Highett had a tough team to beat in their
preliminary-final. Despite their hard work, they were also
defeated by the Whitehorse Colts in the preliminary,
losing 0.4.4 to 9.5.59.
Now the Colts have their chance to prove their skills
against the Vampires. Can the Vampirettes hold onto their
impressive undefeated streak? The SMJFL wishes luck to
East Brighton to demonstrate their strong football skills and
teamwork on Sunday.
The game will be held on Sunday August 30, 2015 at
10:15am at Stradbroke Park, Kew.
For more information about the competition through the
YJFL, please visit their website and competition page.
Thanks to all the SMJFL teams who participated in the
Under 18 Youth Girls Sunday competition this year,
congratulations on your achievements and we hope you
enjoyed the rivalries within YJFL.

46 | IT’S ABOUT THE KIDS
MCDONALD’S U16 DIV 1
It’s the third-placed Knights taking on the first placed Rovers in what’s set
to be a challenging match for both teams. The second placed Beaumaris
Sharks were no match for East Malvern in the semi, the Knights dominated
play for the whole match. East Malvern have beaten the Rovers once
this season already and are looking impressive. The Rovers have got a
challenge ahead.
MCDONALD’S U16 DIV 2
The South Melbourne Districts have had one loss against the Vampires,
while the Vampires have suffered defeat twice. The Vampires just weren’t
able to break through the South Melbourne defence. Can the Vampires
claim the final victory? Or will the Bloods be able to make it three in a
row against this strong side?
MCDONALD’S U16 DIV 3
It’s been a tight contest at the top all year, with Ajax managing to knock
the top side off in the semi-finals, only for Waverley Park Hawks to
come back through the preliminary and meet them again. Only one loss
between the two and now they’re going to be playing for the right to top
spot.

The St Bedes Mentone team impressed one and all after their win against
the top-side Caulfield Bears in the semi-final. The third placed Knights also
are on track for success after their equally impressive matches against
Ormond and then the Bears to make the final. With second and third
facing off, it’s set to be a good one.

MCDONALD’S U17 DIV 1
With only percentage between them, St Peters and Mordialloc-Braeside
have had some tough battles. The Mustangs couldn’t match St Peters in
the first semi-final, only to have a narrow win in their preliminary final
against Ormond. Mordialloc need to be bringing the heat.
MCDONALD’S U17 DIV 2
The Sharks are a force to be reckoned with. A string of goal kickers and
a dominant pace should be giving St Paul’s something to think about. But
after St Paul’s impressive preliminary win over the Waverley Park Hawks,
Beaumaris might have some thinking of their own to do.

Lachlan ‘Lachie’ Barber has reached his 100 games, running
out in his team’s semi-final victory against East Malvern. Along
with his teammates Harry Bede, Sam Cameron, Steve Raymer,
Jordan Gregory, Dan Dowling and Angus Stucki, he’ll be
running through the banner to celebrate a tremendous effort for
the three boys in their junior football.
As his U16 Div 2 East Brighton Vampire side faces off against
the East Malvern Knights, it’ll be a great end to a long journey
for the sport-loving Lachie, who’s faced more than his fair share
of setbacks. But as his parents say, he’s never asked: ‘Why me?’
On November 11, 2008 Lachie, who had been feeling tired
and wasn’t beating a frustrating cold, didn’t want to go to
school. His Mum, Michelle, decided to take Lachie to the doctor
and get a blood test.
“That night we were in the cancer ward,” Michelle said.
“Lachie was diagnosed with ALL (Acute lymphoblastic leukemia)
and with that kind of leukemia it’s one of the most common
childhood leukemia’s, it’s one of the easier leukemia’s to treat
but it also has the highest likelihood of relapse.”
But right from the beginning, the football community has been
around him and is ready to watch and cheer him as he runs
though his banner.
“The club was a rock of support during those tough first few
weeks, everyone knew each other at the club so when the news
broke out it became a common discussion,” Lachie said.
“… Before my family and I knew it we were overwhelmed with
support from close friends, coaches and complete strangers.”
After missing the season after his diagnosis, Lachie was eager
to get back out on the field for the next season.
“I’d just completed a huge chemo cycle and had been out of
action for a very long time,” Lachie recalled.
“I woke this one Sunday feeling pretty ambitious and told Dad
that I was going to play, to my surprise he smiled and said:
‘Good, I’ll be waiting in the car’.
“We got to the ‘hallowed turf’ (Toorak park) our home ground and
I couldn’t wait to get into the change rooms and see the boys.
“I had bald hair and looked like I hadn’t had a decent feed in
years but that didn’t bother me, all I cared about was getting a
goal to my name.
“Sure enough about 10 minutes into the first quarter I was
pushed in the back and received a free kick directly in front, I
stepped back took a deep breath and kicked the first goal of the
game, the crowd went wild and I think the whole team came
and got around me”.
“I think I subbed myself off after that because I was already
spent, nevertheless it was still the best moment.”
After his diagnosis, Lachie came back to play throughout the
rest of his treatment. While taking oral chemotherapy tablets
and receiving intravenous chemotherapy every month, he was
still playing footy. While kicking goals and taking the big grabs
used to be his favourite part, he’s now looking at footy from a
62 | IT’S ABOUT THE KIDS
different approach.
“Nowadays I tend to cherish the simpler things like running out
on the field and having a real crack with the mates after a hard
week of school,” Lachie said.
“Football is an escape from the busy life a normal year 10 has
to deal with like choosing V.C.E subjects and completing a
never-ending supply of homework and that’s why I love it.
His family has had to jump the hurdles of Lachie’s cancer
together, with a younger brother, Ash, who didn’t understand
what was happening, to the family dealing with business
ventures.
“We also just signed off on a lease for a new business, to a
new Volvo dealership in 2008… Global Financial Crisis, new
business and a sick child,” Lachie’s Dad, Rob said.
“We had a fair bit on our plates.”
However his parents say he’s pushed through everything been
thrown at him with aplomb, and Lachie says his positive attitude
has been the best way he’s moved forward.
“It took a while for me to get my head around it all, and to this
day I find it hard to talk about.
“We have been brought up to believe that only bad things only
happen to bad people and you hear stories on the news and
have relatives that have faced life threatening challenges but
you never in your own mind believe that one day that person
could be you and it’s a real eye opener.
“There were times early on when I would ask myself:
‘Am I going to die?’
“I felt that would only worsen the matter and I identified that my
weakness was my mental toughness.
“It was bringing me down more than the cancer was so I
decided that from then on I only think positive and try and live
the most normal life I could possible.”
December to January this year is the five-year post treatment
mark where he will be full remission from his Leukemia. With his
100 games under his belt and the final two years of high school
coming up, there’s plenty for Lachie and his family to celebrate.
However Lachie gave this bit of advice to any young players
wanting to bounce back from any illness, setback or are just
having a hard time:
“The key is to be positive. In regards to coming back from your
downfall, there’s nothing worse than selling yourself short.
“Don’t let people tell you that: ‘It’s OK we understand why
you’re not playing well, you have been out of the game a while,
you don’t have give it your all’.
“The thing that drove me to keep playing as soon as possible
was to make people believe that nothing was wrong, I was
normal and I didn’t need the sympathy label on my shoulder.
“To anyone who has been touched by something that has set
them back from what they love doing I hope this gave you
strength and hope.”
