This year in the Blackpool British Championships, Dance Crazy came home with 4 firsts, which has never been done before in Blackpool history. This is my third production in Hawthorn High School my first show was ‘Grease’ in which I played Cha- Cha. It was an amazing experience, as I was the only year 7 with a speaking role. I played Fat Sam in the KS3 show ‘Bugsy Malone’. I loved performing this as I was double cast with Becky McGrath. In the Wizard of Oz, I play the First Visiting Witch double cast with Katie Beer, I am really excited to be acting with the whole cast again, because it lets me hang out with people from all year groups. Being in school shows has helped me meet new people who have helped me throughout the show such as Casey Humphreys who has helped me learn lines and develop my acting skills. I hope to be an English teacher when I leave school even though that is 5 years away. I love taking part in school shows because it gives many amazing opportunities. The Film One of the most ideally cast movies in the history of the Cinema, THE WIZARD OF OZ, remains to this day a classic in all respects. A milestone in Judy Garland’s career, she was just seventeen years old when the film was released in August 1939, she won a special Academy Award for the best juvenile performance of the year. In the film Judy introduced the Arlen Harburg Song, “Over the Rainbow”, a song to this day synonymous with Judy Garland. The Wizard of Oz was one of the biggest budgeted pictures of the time with photography in both black and white and colour, M.G.M. apared no expense in creating the magical land of Oz. Arthur Freed said, “Before I was a producer, I bought the Wizard of Oz from Sam Goldwyn. He had owned if for years and never made it, but it was an expensive picture and Mr Mayer suggested that I should be Associate Producer and Mervyn le Roy would produce it. Both Mervyn and I wanted Judy for the role of Dorothy, but the front office wanted to play it safe and said “Let’s borrow Shirley Temple”. They couldn’t borrow her, thanks God! The song ‘Over the Rainbow’ was taken out of the film after the preview. Nobody seemed to like it! But I took a chance and put the song back in the film before the picture was released.” It won the Academy Award for best song! Harold Arlen - Composer Born Feb 15, 1905, Buffalo, NY Died April 27, 1986, New York, NY Born Hyman Arluck, Arlen was the son of a cantor. As a teenager Arien played piano in movie houses and formed his own jazz group. He started writing songs for New York revues with lyricist Ted Koehler, to whom he was introduced by Harry Warren. Their first hit was Get Happy in 1931, followed by Stormy Weather for a Cotton Club revue in 1933. Also in those early years he teamed with lyricist Yip Harburg to produce it’s Only a Paper Moon, and in 1934 he wrote several great songs for the revue Life Begins at 8:40, with lyrics provided by both Harburg and Ira Gershwin. These included You’re a Builder-Upper, Fun to be Fooled, and Let’s Take a Walk Around the Block. Harburg said of Arlen’s style of working: Harold was the most fastidious and demanding-of-himself that you could find anywhere. He threw everything out. He was frightened of everything sounding like something else… He will labour on one phrase, sometimes for weeks, exploring every musical possibility with the patience of a chess champion. Over the next 20 years Arlen worked with harburg to produce scores for another hit revue Hooray for What, and two Broadway shows; Bloomer Girl and Jamaica. They also wrote the score for the movie phenomenon The Wizard of Oz. E.Y. Harburg - Lyricist Born April 8, 1896 Died March 5, 1981 A lyricist who worked with many well known composers. Born Isidore Hochberg to immigrant parents on the Lower East Side of New York, his name was changed to Edgar Harburg. He is best known by his nickname, Yip Harburg: Yip is short for yipsel meaning squirrel. He attended Townsend Harris High School where he and Ira Gerhswin worked on the school paper and became life-long friends. They went on to attend City College (later part of the City University of New York) together. After gradulation, Harburg worked as a journalist in South America, then returned to New York where he became co-owner of Consolidated Electrical Appliance Company. The company went bankrupt following the crash of 1929, and Ira Gershwin introduced Yip to Jay Gorney. Harburg collaborated with Gorney on songs for a Broadway review (Earl Carroll’s Sketchbook): the show was successful and Harburg was engaged as lyricist for a series of successful reviews, including Americana in 1932, for which he wrote the lyrics to Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?, which became an anthem of the Depression. Harburg and Gorney were offered a contract with Paramount in Hollywood, Harold Arlen, Vernon Duke, Jerome Kern, Jule Styne and Burton Lane all wrote the lyrics for The Wizard of Oz. He was blacklisted for his left-wing political activity in the 1940’s. No longer able to work in Hollywood, he returned to New York, where he began to write a series of book musicals with social messages, including Bloomer Girl and Finian’s Rainbow. Harburg was inducted into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame in 1972. Songs - Somewhere Over the Rainbow; Brother Can You Spare a Dime?; April in Paris; It’s Only a Paper Moon; Lydia the Tattooed Lady and Old Devil Moon. Broadway Reviews - Earl Carroll’s Sketchbook (1929) and Americana (1932) Broadway Musicals - Bloomer Girl (1944); Finian’s Rainbow (1947); Flahooley (1951 and Jamaica (1957). Films - The Wizard of Oz (1939); Cabin in the Sky and Gay Purr-ee (1962). We are so thrilled to present this year’s musical production of The Wizard of Oz. Work behind the scenes began earlier this year in July, with auditions held during the first week of the autumn term and the rehearsal schedule has been relentless ever since! In spite of us having worked together at Hawthorn since 2006, this is actually the first show that we have produced together without the guidance of Debbie Wilcox and Mark Shewring. Although we have missed the sage wisdom of these two Hawthorn legends, we have had such fun taking over the reins and are confident that the pupils have yet again created a superb production, of which we can all be extremely proud. We have so many talented pupils at Hawthorn that we have once again had to double cast the show. In fact there are over one hundred pupils in the cast and crew of this production, accounting for more than 10% of the school’s population! Of course we couldn’t possibly run such a large production without a great deal of help. We would like to publicly thank the Governors, Head Teacher and Senior Management Team for their ongoing support. Thanks also to the Parent Teacher Association who have helped out again this year both with refreshments and with the timing of buying the school a brand new lighting desk! Many thanks to all the staff who have agreed to give up their time during the rehearsal period as well as during the shows themselves, we are so grateful and couldn’t do it without you. A big thank you to the families of the pupils, who provide unstinting support in creating costumes, helping at rehearsals and acting as an unpaid taxi service for your children to get back and fore to rehearsals and shows. Our biggest thank you is reserved for the pupils of Hawthorn who make up the cast and crew for this year’s production. You have been a pleasure to work with and are amazing! You have shown immense brain power memorising all your lines, songs and choreography, incredibly kind hearts for dedicating so much of your time to preparations for the show and extreme courage for getting up on stage and performing so brilliantly every night. We couldn’t be prouder of you! We hope you have enjoyed watching The Wizard of Oz as much as we have enjoyed producing it. Mrs O’Carroll, Mrs Fitzgerald-Lombard & Miss Phillipart
