The Cast
(In no particular order)
My name is Tyler Smith and I am in Year 8. I am 13 years old and my
favourite subject in school is PE my subjects outside of school are Rugby and
Horse Riding. I haven’t been in any HHS productions yet, but I have been in
my Primary School plays and they were fun. I also play for the school rugby
team. When I leave school I want to be a Mechanic or a Lawyer.
My name is Evie Thorngate, I am 12 years of age and my favourite subjects
in school are English, Drama and Music. I enjoy these subjects because I feel
that I can really develop my ideas. I love to dance outside of school and
attend Dance Crazy Studios, one of the most successful dance schools in
Wales. This year in the Blackpool British Championships, Dance Crazy came
home with 4 firsts, which has never been done before in Blackpool history.
This is my third production in Hawthorn High School my first show was
‘Grease’ in which I played Cha- Cha. It was an amazing experience, as I was
the only year 7 with a speaking role. I played Fat Sam in the KS3 show
‘Bugsy Malone’. I loved performing this as I was double cast with Becky
McGrath. In the Wizard of Oz, I play the First Visiting Witch double cast
with Katie Beer, I am really excited to be acting with the whole cast again,
because it lets me hang out with people from all year groups. Being in school
shows has helped me meet new people who have helped me throughout the
show such as Casey Humphreys who has helped me learn lines and develop
my acting skills. I hope to be an English teacher when I leave school
even though that is 5 years away. I love taking part in school shows
because it gives many amazing opportunities.
Hi, my name is Fathia Helall, I am 12 years old and I'm in Year 8. My
favourite subjects are Drama, Music and Art. My main interests outside of
school are Netball, Art, Hockey and helping my parents bake. I have
performed in two Hawthorn High School productions before - I played Ritzy
in Bugsy Malone and I sang with the chorus in Grease. I was also involved in
the Hawthorn High School Talent Show in 2015. I love performing and I
enjoyed playing the parts of an alien and an angel in two Christmas concerts.
When I leave school I hope to become an Actress or an Artist.
Hello my name is Megan Thomas, I am in Year 8 and I am 12. My favourite
subject in school is cooking and my main interest outside of school is
singing. I enjoy attending Hawthorn’s Hair and Beauty after school club. I
played a school girl in a concert called Olivia Twist in my Primary School
and I love performing. When I leave school I would like to
be a Primary School Teacher.
Hello my name is Cairon Smallman and I will be the Lion in the Wizard of
Oz. I am 13 years old and so excited to be in the show. I have previously
played the main part of Bugsy in Bugsy Malone and Doody in Grease. I
attend the Mark Jermin Stage School every Saturday. I love coming to this
school as it’s so much fun. My favourite lesson is Spanish but
I like Drama too! I hope you like the show.
My name is Kurt Thomson and I’m currently in Year 13 and 18 years old. I
am studying A-Level Drama, Media Studies and History and these are my
favourite subjects. I particularly enjoy Media Studies because I am interested
in how the media can change the public’s opinion. Previously, I have been
involved in many school productions but the one I get most recognised for
around the school is Grease as ‘Sonny from Ponty’. Due to my appearance
in Grease Mrs O’Carroll has asked me to appear in many cameo roles and I
was even asked to Co-Host the Summer Talent Show. For this show, I am
lucky enough to be an Assistant Director. This has been a great experience
for me. I feel privileged to be a member of such a dedicated and
hardworking Drama group in school. Outside of education, my interests are
Politics and I one day wish to become a Member of Parliament for Rhondda
Cynon Taff and hope to change the unfairness in society. When I finally
leave school I hope that I will achieve my dream of becoming a MP.
My name is Josie Lee and I am 13 years old and in Yr 9. My favourite
subjects are English, Science and Drama and outside of school I play football
and enjoy going out with my friends and family. I have had parts in
Oklahoma, Greece and Ks3 Bugsy Malone and I also participated in last
year’s Carol Concert. I played the lead role in my Primary School’s
Christmas Concert in Yr 6 and have always enjoyed acting. I used to attend
a school of drama and I’ve also learnt 3 years of street dance from age 8-11.
I have played smaller roles in my drama schools production dance. When I
leave school, though ideally I dream of acting as a career, I am aware that it
is a hard goal to achieve and would love to become a Lawyer or Prosecutor.
Hello my name is Candice, I’m 12 years old and in Year 8. My favourite
subjects are Drama, Music, Cooking, Textiles, Maths and English. I have
taken part in one of the school carol concerts and two school productions
Grease and Bugsy Malone. I love to sing outside the school and I am
currently teaching my self how to play the piano and guitar using YouTube.
I hope to become a singer/actor and maybe a lawyer. I’m not sure yet but I
hope one of those.
Hey, my name is Oliver Hopkins, I’m in Year 8 and 13 years old.
My favourite subjects in school are Drama, Humanities, Science and Music.
Outside of school my interests are Drama, Gym and Golf (I know, boring
aren’t I). So far in Hawthorn, I have only been in Bugsy Malone where I
played Dandy Dan, it was really fun maybe because I got to shoot people
with a splurge gun. In primary school, I specifically remember being in the
Night before Christmas where I played a toy soldier. I also took part in a
talent show as a comedian which I won, but looking back my jokes were
pretty bad. Outside of school, I have had paid work for Casualty, Doctor
Who (and yes I met him) and a Waitrose advert but unfortunately was cut. I
also preformed in the pantomime Peter Pan with Frank Vickery and also
Cats. When I leave school I hope to achieve being a successful actor in
London. If there is one part in particular I want to play it’s Bond…. James
Bond. Finally, I am related to two famous celebrities, Jamie Arthur is my
Stepdad (he is a professional boxer) and Tom Jones is my third cousin in
marriage (you know who he is).
Hi! My name is Elle and I am in Year 8 and 13 years old. My favourite
subjects are Music and Drama. I take singing lessons with my friends Jed
and Katie. I like to swim and sing outside of school. I was in Bugsy Malone
and I played the part of Louella and Captain Smolsky. When I was in
Primary School I was involved in all of the productions and I was one of the
main characters twice. When I leave school I want to be an
English/Drama Teacher or an Actress. ;-)
Hi my name is Natalia and I’m in Year 8. I am 12 years old
and my favourite subjects in school are Drama and Music. I go to a drama
club outside of school and I have been in one other production in Hawthorn
High School called Bugsy Malone. In Bugsy Malone I played the part of
knuckles which I really enjoyed. In June 2015 I performed a self defence
piece in the Hawthorn High School Talent Show. I enjoy playing in
Hawthorn High School’s netball games too. I took part in all of the
Christmas Concerts in my Primary School and I perform in shows with my
drama club. I love performing and when I leave school I would like to
continue acting.
My name is Nathan Scott, I’m in Year 8 and I’m 12. My favourite subjects
in school are Physical Education and Mathematics. My interests out side of
school are Football, Rugby and I like Music too. I’m playing General Brass
in the school show and this is my very first school production. In HHS I’m
in the school Football Team for P.E and I have Music Lessons, I play the
Tenor Horn. Outside productions that I have been involved in are the Cory
Band and Music Concerts. The Cory band is the No.1 band ranked world
wide and has won world wide tournaments. When I leave school I will
have hoped to achieve an A+ in at least two of my subjects and I will have
been in at least 3 school productions. I like to play the keyboard and I have
outside music lessons for my brass instrument. I am the fastest in Year 8
and I came third in the whole of Wales 200m sprints.
Hello my name is Alice Thomas, I am 13 and I’m in Year 9. My favourite subject is P.E and I also like Spanish. I am in the South Wales Girls
Regional Squad in Golf. I play Hockey and Netball for the school. Last
year I participated in the carol concert as a guitarist. In Primary School I
was a narrator. When I leave school I want to be a Professional
Hi my name is Paige Sparkes. My Favourite subjects in school are Art,
Drama, Music, English and Technology. My interests outside of school
are spending time with family and friends and hair and beauty. This is
my first school product to take part in. I currently have singing lessons
in school and would like to take part in more Art, Drama and Music.
When I leave school I hope to be a Designer.
Hi my name Elisha Bengough, I’m in Year 8 and I’m 12 years old.
My favourite subjects in school are Music, Humanities and Art. My
interests outside of school are singing and playing musical instruments.
My part for the show is a Munchkin. In school I love to get involved in
Art and any music activities I can. In my primary I loved to be involved
in our class assemblies. In one of our plays I got to audition for the main
lead in the snow white play and I got the part, the main lead. When I
leave school I want to be a singer and be able to make a living out of it.

Wizard of Oz with a local drama group, and will be in Wizard of Oz
again after the School’s production with another local drama group this
year. I have been in “Joseph and the Techni-coloured dream coat” in the
Wales Millennium Centre in the choir. I was also in the choir in Evita in
the New Theatre and was in the background of a Sainsbury’s advert for
active kids with David Beckham and Ellie Simmonds and was in a
newspaper ad with them too. I’m not sure what I would like to achieve
when I leave school, but hope to be successful.
Hi I’m Calista, aged 16. I’m in Year 10 currently studying GCSE Drama
and Btec Performing Arts. I also take singing lessons (Gr 4) and guitar
lessons (Gr 4). I’ve been with the Mark Jermin Stage School for 3 years.
I have performed in the Christmas Carol Service and was in the choir of
Joseph with Ian ‘H’ Watkins at the Wales Millennium Centre. I’ve
attended acting workshop with Charlie Brooks, taken part in ‘Honk’ and
have attended auditions for Farmfoods, Playstation, Nickelodeon and
Dettol. In the summer I performed at the opening ceremony of the UEFA
Supercup with Mass Movement which was brilliant. I am really enjoying
being part of Grease last year and am thrilled to be playing a lead part as
the Tinman this year, performing with such amazing, talented students.
Hello, my name is Annabel and I play Gloria in the show. I have been
involved in school shows since Year 7 such as We Will Rock You,
Oklahoma, Grease & Bugsy Malone. I have singing lessons in school

The Film
One of the most ideally cast movies in the history of the Cinema, THE WIZARD OF
OZ, remains to this day a classic in all respects.
A milestone in Judy Garland’s career, she was just seventeen years old when the film
was released in August 1939, she won a special Academy Award for the best juvenile
performance of the year.
In the film Judy introduced the Arlen Harburg Song, “Over the Rainbow”, a song to
this day synonymous with Judy Garland.
The Wizard of Oz was one of the biggest budgeted pictures of the time with
photography in both black and white and colour, M.G.M. apared no expense in
creating the magical land of Oz.
Arthur Freed said, “Before I was a producer, I bought the Wizard of Oz from Sam
Goldwyn. He had owned if for years and never made it, but it was an expensive
picture and Mr Mayer suggested that I should be Associate Producer and Mervyn le
Roy would produce it. Both Mervyn and I wanted Judy for the role of Dorothy, but
the front office wanted to play it safe and said “Let’s borrow Shirley Temple”. They
couldn’t borrow her, thanks God! The song ‘Over the Rainbow’ was taken out of the
film after the preview. Nobody seemed to like it! But I took a chance and put the
song back in the film before the picture was released.” It won the Academy Award for
best song!
Harold Arlen - Composer
Born Feb 15, 1905, Buffalo, NY
Died April 27, 1986, New York, NY
Born Hyman Arluck, Arlen was the son of a cantor. As a teenager Arien
played piano in movie houses and formed his own jazz group. He started
writing songs for New York revues with lyricist Ted Koehler, to whom he was
introduced by Harry Warren. Their first hit was Get Happy in 1931, followed
by Stormy Weather for a Cotton Club revue in 1933. Also in those early years
he teamed with lyricist Yip Harburg to produce it’s Only a Paper Moon, and in 1934 he wrote
several great songs for the revue Life Begins at 8:40, with lyrics provided by both Harburg and Ira
Gershwin. These included You’re a Builder-Upper, Fun to be Fooled, and Let’s Take a Walk
Around the Block. Harburg said of Arlen’s style of working: Harold was the most fastidious and
demanding-of-himself that you could find anywhere. He threw everything out. He was
frightened of everything sounding like something else… He will labour on one phrase, sometimes
for weeks, exploring every musical possibility with the patience of a chess champion.
Over the next 20 years Arlen worked with harburg to produce scores for another hit revue Hooray
for What, and two Broadway shows; Bloomer Girl and Jamaica. They also wrote the score for the
movie phenomenon The Wizard of Oz.
E.Y. Harburg - Lyricist
Born April 8, 1896
Died March 5, 1981
A lyricist who worked with many well known composers. Born Isidore
Hochberg to immigrant parents on the Lower East Side of New York, his name
was changed to Edgar Harburg. He is best known by his nickname, Yip
Harburg: Yip is short for yipsel meaning squirrel. He attended Townsend
Harris High School where he and Ira Gerhswin worked on the school paper
and became life-long friends. They went on to attend City College (later part of the City
University of New York) together. After gradulation, Harburg worked as a journalist in South
America, then returned to New York where he became co-owner of Consolidated Electrical
Appliance Company. The company went bankrupt following the crash of 1929, and Ira Gershwin
introduced Yip to Jay Gorney. Harburg collaborated with Gorney on songs for a Broadway
review (Earl Carroll’s Sketchbook): the show was successful and Harburg was engaged as lyricist
for a series of successful reviews, including Americana in 1932, for which he wrote the lyrics to
Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?, which became an anthem of the Depression.
Harburg and Gorney were offered a contract with Paramount in Hollywood, Harold Arlen, Vernon
Duke, Jerome Kern, Jule Styne and Burton Lane all wrote the lyrics for The Wizard of Oz. He
was blacklisted for his left-wing political activity in the 1940’s. No longer able to work in
Hollywood, he returned to New York, where he began to write a series of book musicals with
social messages, including Bloomer Girl and Finian’s Rainbow. Harburg was inducted into the
Songwriters’ Hall of Fame in 1972.
Songs - Somewhere Over the Rainbow; Brother Can You Spare a Dime?; April in Paris; It’s
Only a Paper Moon; Lydia the Tattooed Lady and Old Devil Moon.
Broadway Reviews - Earl Carroll’s Sketchbook (1929) and Americana (1932)
Broadway Musicals - Bloomer Girl (1944); Finian’s Rainbow (1947); Flahooley (1951 and
Jamaica (1957).
Films - The Wizard of Oz (1939); Cabin in the Sky and Gay Purr-ee (1962).
We are so thrilled to present this year’s musical production of The Wizard of
Oz. Work behind the scenes began earlier this year in July, with auditions
held during the first week of the autumn term and the rehearsal schedule has
been relentless ever since!
In spite of us having worked together at Hawthorn since 2006, this is
actually the first show that we have produced together without the guidance
of Debbie Wilcox and Mark Shewring. Although we have missed the sage
wisdom of these two Hawthorn legends, we have had such fun taking over
the reins and are confident that the pupils have yet again created a superb
production, of which we can all be extremely proud.
We have so many talented pupils at Hawthorn that we have once again had
to double cast the show. In fact there are over one hundred pupils in the cast
and crew of this production, accounting for more than 10% of the school’s
population! Of course we couldn’t possibly run such a large production
without a great deal of help. We would like to publicly thank the Governors,
Head Teacher and Senior Management Team for their ongoing support.
Thanks also to the Parent Teacher Association who have helped out again
this year both with refreshments and with the timing of buying the school a
brand new lighting desk! Many thanks to all the staff who have agreed to
give up their time during the rehearsal period as well as during the shows
themselves, we are so grateful and couldn’t do it without you. A big thank
you to the families of the pupils, who provide unstinting support in creating
costumes, helping at rehearsals and acting as an unpaid taxi service for your
children to get back and fore to rehearsals and shows.
Our biggest thank you is reserved for the pupils of Hawthorn who make up
the cast and crew for this year’s production. You have been a pleasure to
work with and are amazing! You have shown immense brain power
memorising all your lines, songs and choreography, incredibly kind hearts
for dedicating so much of your time to preparations for the show and
extreme courage for getting up on stage and performing so brilliantly every
night. We couldn’t be prouder of you!
We hope you have enjoyed watching The Wizard of Oz as much as we have
enjoyed producing it.
