Our HistOry
2012 proved to be a year of extraordinary growth for the Foundation. Great strides were
made in expanding our services of financial assistance, education, and support to Alabama’s
kidney patients. Because of the generosity of our friends and supporters, the Foundation
completed its 37th year as Alabama’s only state-based organization dedicated to assisting
kidney patients.
Here are some notable accomplishments for 2012:
•The Foundation’s financial assistance program experienced record breaking
growth at $771,627
•The Foundation opened 3 new Regional Offices: Huntsville, Mobile, and Birmingham
•The Foundation added a patient education conference in Montgomery, in addition to
Birmingham and Huntsville
•The Foundation held its first Walk-a-Thon in Mobile, raising over $80,000
Unless there is a cure, kidney disease will likely triple over the next decade. With a continued increase of kidney disease in our state, the Foundation will need sustained growth to

meet a growing need. To meet the projected and growing needs, the Foundation is carefully
exploring and planning new ways to expand its level of support.
To all our faithful and generous supporters in 2012, thank you. You have made a difference
in the lives of others.
The Alabama Kidney Foundation embarked upon its journey to becoming Alabama’s premier provider of assistance
programs for kidney patients during this difficult period of time. It all began with a conversation between two kidney patients
where one made known his decision to discontinue treating his disease because the costs were so high he feared it would leave
his family destitute. The hopelessness and despair expressed by that one patient would have far reaching effects. William E. Rowe
was the patient who listened to this tragic revelation and he knew there were other patients facing similar circumstances. His
empathy and concern for other patients drove him to action. Mr. Rowe gathered a group of volunteers and formed a mission
driven organization dedicated to helping and supporting the patient. This compassionate group of volunteers soon became known
as the Alabama Kidney Foundation.
Incredible advancements in the world of kidney medicine have occurred since those early days, but the despair and
helplessness caused by kidney disease continues to be clearly visible. Alabama has an unusually high occurrence of kidney disease, ranking fifth in the nation. Today over 7,000 Alabamians seek dialysis treatments three times a week simply to sustain life.
The Alabama Kidney Foundation, founded to assist kidney patients, has a 37 year history of serving Alabama’s kidney
patient population. Today, the Alabama Kidney Foundation stands alone as the only state-based organization dedicated to assisting
kidney patients and each year touches the lives of thousands of Alabamians.

The Alabama Kidney Foundation has a rich history of serving Alabama’s kidney patients beginning in 1975. At that time
life was extremely difficult for kidney patients. Few outpatient treatment facilities were available and the costs of treating kidney
disease were enormous. With the demand for treatment far exceeding the medical community’s capacity, real life or death
decisions about who would receive dialysis and who wouldn’t were being made.

VOLUNTEER DISTRICTS
Financial assistance
lOcatiOns
The Financial Assistance programs provide patients with much needed help during financially difficult times. The
Alabama Kidney Foundation has three separate programs:
state Office
Daily Living Needs (DLN) provides assistance to help patients meet basic daily living expenses. Critical Need Treatment
Related Transportation Assistance Program (CNTRTAP) provides transportation assistance to Alabama’s sickest and
poorest kidney patients for life-sustaining dialysis treatments. Guidelines for admittance to this program are very strict.

The AL Transportation Assistance Program (ATAP) provides transportation assistance to a broader range of patients who,
while not qualifying for admittance to CNTRTAP, are still in great need of help with the high cost of travel to dialysis three times
a week.

The Support Services Programs strive to help patients cope with their life circumstances by reaching beyond traditional
knowledge-based patient education and helping them develop problem-solving skills, improve self-sufficiency and apply their

BirMingHaM area
The creation of our Birmingham Regional Office took place this year and we were pleased to introduce our new Birmingham Regional Director, Paige Connell. The greater Birmingham area volunteers continue to provide a valuable service to the
chronically ill patients living in the surrounding five counties (Jefferson, Walker, Shelby, Blount and St. Clair). Each year the
volunteers prepare and package holiday gift bags for over 2,000 dialysis patients through the Stocking Stuffer Project. These
volunteers also helped host the Birmingham Patient Education Conference, held at St. Vincent’s Conference Center, during the fall.
Huntsville area
The opening of the Huntsville Regional Office took place this year and we were pleased to introduce to the North Alabama
community our new Huntsville Regional Director, Traci Clark. The Huntsville Regional Office hosted the Huntsville Patient
Education Conference on September 9, 2012 at the EarlyWorks Museum and also held its 2nd Walk-a-Thon raising over $50,000.
MOBile area
The greater Mobile area volunteers held its first Walk-a-Thon at UMS Wright Preparatory School on March 17, 2012. They
raised over $80,000. The opening of the Mobile Regional Office took place this year and we were pleased to also announce the
hiring of our new Mobile Regional Director, Becki Connally.
MOntgOMery area
The greater Montgomery area volunteers continue to be a group of compassionate and enthusiastic individuals, providing
service throughout the River Region (Montgomery, Autauga, Elmore, Pike, Butler and Bullock counties). The Montgomery
Regional Office hosted their first ever Patient Education Conference on November 11, 2012 at the Montgomery Cardiovascular
Institute located at Baptist Medical Center South. Over 60 people attended this half-day conference, which featured a number of
general sessions on dialysis and transplant-related topics, as well as food demonstration.

Since 1923, the United Way of Central Alabama has helped to increase the organized capacity of people to care for one
another and to improve its community. The Alabama Kidney Foundation is proud to be one of the United Way of Central Alabama’s
partnering agencies..
alaBaMa Organ center
The Alabama Organ Center is committed to increasing knowledge about organ and tissue donation and transplantation,
while eliminating common misconceptions regarding donation through public and professional education programs. The
Alabama Kidney Foundation and the Alabama Organ Center share the same commitment to organ donation and awareness.
STATE OF ALABAMA
The Alabama Kidney Foundation is pleased to partner with the State of Alabama to provide treatment related transportation assistance to Alabama’s kidney patients. The State of Alabama reinstated an annual appropriation from the General Fund
budget in 2007 that will assist hundreds of patients with the transportation costs associated with renal failure treatments.
cOMBined Federal caMpaign and state eMplOyee caMpaign
The Combined Federal Campaign and the State Employee Campaign provide an avenue where federal and/or state
employees can support the work of the Alabama Kidney Foundation through payroll deductions. The Alabama Kidney
Foundation uses the funds generated by these campaigns to make a difference in the lives of those it serves.

SUCCESS AROUND THE STATE
Muscle sHOals area
The greater Muscle Shoals Volunteer Chapter is the Foundation’s only volunteer-based chapter in the state. This group of
diligent volunteers strives to improve the quality of life for the patients in this area by providing financial assistance, sponsoring
a kidney disease support group, and hosting an annual picnic for dialysis patients and family.
area Walk-a-tHOns
The Alabama Kidney Foundation hosted four walks in 2012, one in Birmingham, Montgomery, Huntsville and for the first
time, one in Mobile. The Walk-a-Thons generated a total income of over $360,000 and involved over 1,500 participants and
volunteers. The revenues generated by the Walk-a-Thons help fund the AKF’s financial assistance programs.
