Christopher Arena ’99
"Since being Honorably Discharged from the Marine Corps in 2011,
Christopher graduated from The George Washington University Law
School in Washington, D.C in May 2016; receiving a J.D. and L.L.M.
While in law school, he clerked for the Honorable Richard F. Suhrheinrich
at the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit in Cincinnati.
There he assisted with the drafting and editing of the opinion and oral
arguments in DeBoer v. Snyder (2014) which was ultimately appealed to
the U.S. Supreme Court.
Chris also earned the Public Interest Student Leadership Award for his
pro bono work with veterans. He is a member of The Giles S. Rich
American Inn of Court.”
LTC Lucas Hightower ’96, ’98C
LTC Lucas Hightower '96 '98C will command the Regimental
Support Squadron of the 3rd Cavalry Regiment, at Fort Hood, Texas in
2017. Lucas spent his last tour of duty in Turkey with his beautiful
family pictured here at the Garden of Peace. Congratulations and
welcome home from all of your classmates and fellow alumni.
Mark D ’Andrea ’85
Mark D ’Andrea ’85 has been awarded the First Alumni Association Service Sword
Award for dedication and outstanding service given to Valley Forge Military Academy
& College and the Alumni Association. Mark has been a key part of our Homecoming
Raffle for many years and it is from his marvelous gifts that we are able to continue this
great tradition. His dedication and his generosity have made him the Alumni
Association’s Board of Directors their unanimous selection as the first recipient of the
Alumni Service Award Sword. Congratulations Sir!!!!
BG Tomas B. Puyans ’48C, USA (Ret.)
Attention VFMA&C cadets and particularly H Company
alumni! Saturday May 7, 2016 was BG TOMAS B. PUYANS
’48C, 88th birthday. I am sure many of you have fond memories of
“Papa Puyans” and the role he played in your life as a cadet. If
you'd like to send him a birthday card and wish him well message
COL Thomas Medearis ’66 on Facebook and he will reply with
his mailing address. Special thanks to COL Medearis ’66 who is
another great legend at Valley Forge.
Colonel Michael D. Gaffney USA ’93C
On 15 March 2016, Michael D. Gaffney VFMC '93 was
promoted to Colonel in the United States Army. While at
Valley Forge, Michael served as the 3rd Platoon Leader in F
Company.
Colonel Gaffney currently serves as a senior battalion
trainer at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center (JMRC) in
Hohenfels, Germany. His team trains units from NATO
countries on multinational interoperability and conducts
training exercises in Latvia and Ukraine. He has deployed
multiple times to Iraq and Afghanistan.
Joshua T. Montler ‘95
Lee Industries, Inc., a global supplier of sanitary-stainless-steel-alloy process
systems and equipment and fluid-transfer valves to many of the world's top 100
companies in the food and beverage, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, biotech, and
chemical industries, today announced the appointment of Joshua T. Montler as
president and chief financial officer and chief operating officer. The
appointment is effective May 1.
Joshua Montler has served as vice president of finance and operations for
the company since 2008 and will succeed his father, Robert W. Montler, as
president. Robert Montler will remain chairman of the board and chief executive officer and will
continue serving the community through his involvement on various regional boards.
Joshua Montler is a graduate of Valley Forge Military Academy and College in Wayne and
earned a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting and a Master of Business Administration from
Saint Francis University in Loreto. He resides in State College with his wife, Danielle, and their two
children.
James Sciretta ’12
James Sciretta VFMA '12, PSU '16, was commissioned through Navy
ROTC at PSU. He was a member of the Valley Forge Military Academy and
College Rifle Club and an excellent student and shot. Congratulations on his
hard work and dedication to his career and his country.
Mr Sciretta ’12 was a 1st LT in E Battery where he excelled at soccer,
basketball and baseball. His crowning achievement we continuously earning
Gold Stars.
The word we get from Coach Chris Bechtel is that James is going to be
a pilot. We wish you the best of luck and we applaud your accomplishments. BRAVO!!!!!

Colonel Lee Temperton ’16H VFMAC
(Ret.) is one of our newest Honorary Alumni
who has given a lifetime of service to VFMA&C
in the classroom, with the cadets, their families,
the faculty and the staff and administration. We
are proud to award COL Temperton the status
of Alum and welcome him to the Long Line of
Grey.

LTC Flood ’16H has given many years of
service to the cadets of the Academy as an
Associate Professor of English. Vicki’s many
years of teaching has left an indelible imprint of
her good work on many of us Alumni and for
that we are always grateful. Her indomitable spirit
and zest for not only the class room but also for
directing Cadet’s extracurricular activities make
her one of the most popular teachers of all time.

Mrs. Susan Floyd ’16H
Mrs. Susan Floyd ’16H has been a fixture
here at Valley Forge Military Academy and
College for many years. Sue has played an
intricate part in all areas of life at the Forge and
her hard work and support for our school is
evident everywhere you go on the Post. Sue is an
intricate part of our development here and she is
involved with the growth and stability of our
School. As the wife of Board of Trustee
Chairman William R. Floyd Jr. ’63 she has put
as many years of service in as her husband.

COL Gerald Cupo ’16H VFMAC (Ret.)
of 2016.
Col Gerald Cupo ’16H VFMAC (Ret.) Former Associate Professor of
Science for the Academy has put in decades of service to our school and our
cadets. Jerry has been involved in almost every area of the school and has
contributed in everything from academics, extracurricular activities, cadet
life, clubs, and athletics and was always there when you needed him. The
alumni and cadets nominated Jerry to the AABOD to receive the Honorary
Alumnus designation and by a unanimous vote of the Board it was so
recommended. That recommendation was sent to Dr. Stacey Sauchuk,
President of VFMA&C and the Executive Committee of the School where
Col. Cupo was again unanimously approved. The Alumni Association of
VFMA&C welcomes him into the fold and is proud to have him in the class
Distinguished Alumnus Award
The Distinguished Alumnus Award is presented to an alumnus who has demonstrated
extraordinary and conspicuous achievement in his chosen field of endeavor as determined by Valley
Forge Military Academy and College.
Barry B. Sandrew, Ph.D. '66
Barry B. Sandrew, Ph.D. ’66
Neuroscientist, inventor, serial entrepreneur,
and pioneering film maker who invented
colorization and 3D conversion of feature
films. Class Representative for 1966, Chapel
Speaker for Homecoming. Guest Lecturer at
VFMC for technical production in motion
pictures.
Dr. Sandrew is internationally known and
respected as a technical authority in the
motion picture industry and he lectures and
consults worldwide in this arena.
Dr. Sandrew was nominated by the Awards Committee of the Alumni Association Board of
Directors and his nomination was unanimously approved. His Nomination was then sent to the
President and Executive Committee where he was again unanimously approved.

LTC William M. Beute, Ph.D. ’63C
LTC William M. Beute, Ph.D. ’63C Vice President of Abbey
Watchung Laminating & Engraving Company, Former Confidential
Agent, New Jersey State Parole Board, Former President of Union
Technical Institute (publically traded technical school) a subsidiary of
Kennedy Concepts. He is an ordained priest of the Old Catholic Rite,
serving as Assistant Chaplain LTC, VFMA&C.
Dr. Beute ’63C has provided years of service to Valley Forge
Military Academy and College in many different capacities. He has
served as a member and director of the Alumni Association Board of
Directors and has served and chaired many of the standing
committees, such as Forge Way and Governance. He has been
instrumental in establishing the format for the current Chapel service
and for the memorial Silver Taps Ceremony which we celebrate every
Homecoming. Dr. Beute ’63C also is a member of the Society of the
Golden Sword and has been an advisor to the Board of Trustees. Dr. Beute ’63C is an institution
here at the Forge and it was with great pride that he was nominated and approved by the President
and Executive Committee as the 2016 Distinguished Alumnus. Congratulations Sir!
Outstanding Alumnus Award
The Outstanding Alumnus Award is presented to an alumnus or alumni who has demonstrated
outstanding dedication and support of Valley Forge Military Academy and College over a sustained
period of time since his graduation. The recipient must clearly have acted to benefit Valley Forge
above and beyond the normal service expected of a graduate.
David J. Esqueda ’98, ’00C
David J. Esqueda ’98, ’00C served as both a member and a
Director of The Alumni Association Board of Directors since his
graduation and appointment as the new graduation director.
David has served as President of the Alumni Association and
Chairman of the AABOD and has led the movement of growth
and diversity on the Board. David has shown the same
leadership in heading the Board as he has when he was the
Second Captain and as a leader in the engineering department as
a student at Penn State University. Today David is an executive
at Accenture Corporation and serves as a member of the Valley
Forge Military Academy and College Board of Trustees. He is a
devoted husband to Andrea and a do all father for their 2
children.
David is a member of the Society of the Golden Sword and
the 1928 Society.
Tim Graham ’66
Tim Graham ’66 serves as Associate Regimental
Commander of the N.E. Ohio Regiment of the Alumni
Association with 2015 Outstanding Alum, Hugh Roberts ’56,
where they have built one of the most active Regiments in the
United States.
As a museum curator he has worked with VF on the
establishment and stocking of our museum with donations of
artifacts and procurement of VFMA&C historical items. Tim
donates all the swords and sabers for every auction that VF has,
from Alumni to Parents to Athletic. He is a member of the
Society of the Golden Sword and the 1928 Society.
For his years of service to the N.E. Ohio Regiment and his
expertise in our wonderful museum and his participation in all
of our auctions with his generosity Tim was unanimously
approved to receive this year’s 2016 Outstanding Alumnus
Award and Sword. Congratulations Sir!!!!
George Washington Award
Vadim Tsires – VFMA&C Network Administrator
Vadim Tsires, our computer guru who
holds one of the most important roles on
campus, has been a mainstay at Valley Forge. If
not for him and Michael Brock, the
computers and network would not work.
Vadim is on call 24/7 12 months a year to
make sure that our systems are up and
functioning and protected.
We are proud to add Vadim to the list of
most valued employees by being unanimously
selected to receive the 2016 George
Washington Award. It is richly deserved and a token of our esteem for a job well done. We are
certainly glad you do it for The Forge. Congratulation from all of us in the Alumni Association.
Anthony Pino ’58, ’60C Second Captain Saber Presentation
Anthony A. Pino, Jr., ‘60C Memorial Scholarship Fund
The Anthony Pino ’58, ’60C Second Captain Scholarship and
Saber will be presented each year to the Regimental Executive Officer.
Anthony Pino, Jr. '58, '60C, TAPS was the much loved Regimental
Executive Officer (2nd Captain) in 1960. He was so much respected that
his classmates have come together to donate this saber and start a
scholarship fund in the name of Anthony Pino ’58, ’60C which will be
presented every year to the incoming Regimental Executive Officer.
Arthur Lambert ’60, a member of the Executive Committee of the
AABOD and a classmate of Tony is presenting the first saber to the
Regimental Commander Jaren Knightly ’16C.
The Douglas H. Forster Medal
The Douglas H. Forster Medal: Presented
annually by Mr. Howard A. Forster, Class of 1948,
and Mrs. Forster in honor of their son, to that Cadet of
the First Class with a satisfactory academic and tactical
record who excels in the subject area of History and
Social Studies during his First Class year.
It was my great pleasure to help Douglas Forster to
present his medal. I was incredibly proud to be able to
help with his presentation to Cadet James Kelin.
The Class of 1947 Medal:
The Class of 1947 Medal is awarded annually in memory of the six
members of the Class of 1947 who died in service of their country:
Private First Class Junius B. Angelli, U.S. Army; Lieutenant
Commander William T. Harvey, U.S. Navy, First Lieutenant Je
Mickey Helt, U.S. Army; Lieutenant Arthur H. Moore, U.S. Navy;
First Lieutenant Myron George Reed, II, U.S. Air Force; and
Corporal Clifford David Strout, Jr., U.S. Army. The Class of 1947
Medal is to be awarded to those individuals who best exemplify
nobility of spirit, richness of character and remarkable performance in
“the service of others”
The medal is being presented here by John “Robbie” Robinson
’47. Robbie is a true member of the Forge family and he represents
his class of 1947 every year to make this prestigious presentation.
Robbie has been a member of the AABOD as a Director and he is a
member of the Society of the Golden Sword. He is also a recipient of the Outstanding Alumnus
Award.
This year the medal was presented to Cadet Salman Al-Khalifa from the College and Cadet
Bandar Alhoraibi from the Academy.
Eric Fisher Wood Jr. ’37 TAPS Monument Dedication
Eric Fisher Wood Jr. ’37 TAPS is one of our most
decorated alumni. He gave his live saving others at the end of the
Battle of the Bulge and he was awarded the Distinguished Service
Cross as well as many other medals for valor from the United
States as well as Belguim and France.
On Homecoming weekend, thanks to the efforts of the N.E.
Ohio Regiment of the Alumni Association, led by Hugh
Roberts ’56 and Tim Graham ’66, a monument was dedicated in the memory of Eric Fisher
Wood Jr. ’37. Present at the ceremony were Eric Fisher Wood III, son of the hero, the Veterans
Association of the 106th Infantry Division, “Golden Lion” and many alumni and guests helped make
this dedication a great success. Special thanks to CAPT Gerald

The Manual of Arms Competition
One of the biggest success of 2016 Alumni Weekend was the First Annual Alumni vs Cadets
Manual of Arms Competition. This spectacular event was the brainchild of our Alumni Board of
Directors and Homecoming Committee and organized by Forge Way Committee Chairman John
“JT” Hughes ’74 with the help of Regimental Sergeant Major Joshua Rosen ’16C and Battalion

Presentation of the Order of Anthony Wayne:
Mr Niles Dally ’63, Honorary Lifetime Trustee, Member of the Alumni
Association Board of Directors has been nominated and unanimously
recommended to the President and Executive Committee of Valley Forge Military
Academy & College to receive the Order of Anthony Wayne.
The Order of Anthony Wayne is presented to those cadets and members of the
Staff and Faculty who demonstrate high ideals and untiring efforts, above and
beyond the call of duty, contributing substantially to the morale, esprit de corps
and progress of the Academy and exemplifying the best traditions of military
service.
Niles has given VF a lifetime of service in every capacity, from cadet plans and training officer to
member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees. He has serviced as President and
Chairman of the Alumni Association Board of Directors and has been the chairman of The Forge
Way Committee, Homecoming Committee,
Traditions and Customs Committee and the
Museum Committee. He continues to serve as a
Lifetime Trustee and as Chairman of the Awards
and Presentations Committee. For his years of
outstanding and exemplary service we are proud to
see Mr. Niles Dally ’63 receive this most
prestigious award. Congratulations Brother!!!!

Campus Happenings
Pennsylvania Prayer Breakfast
Capt. Gerald Hale, USCG (Ret.), Chaplain - Seven cadets
travelled with me to the Commonwealth Prayer Breakfast in
Harrisburg. This is 3rd time we have participated in this annual
event. Although the Governor did not attend this year, the
event was co-hosted by Senator (and VFMC mom) Camera
Bartolotta. The featured speaker was NFL Hall of Fame
Member Mel Blount of the Pittsburg Steelers. Cadets attending

Dunaway Award Winners
On Thursday 5 May 2016, the annual VFMA Dunaway speaking
competition was held in chapel. The Dunaway was originally
established by Cadet James Weston Dunaway, VFMA ’39, to
promote public speaking. Each finalist crafted a persuasive speech
based on the question “What human quality do we need more of
and why?” Cadets were scored by judges on the following
categories; introduction, body, delivery, and conclusion.
We would like to thank and recognize the seven finalists who
worked so hard on their speeches over the past few months; 4th Class Cadet Joseph Bartlett, 4th
Class Cadet Kevin Errasquin-Flandes, 5th Class Cadet Alexander Consentino, 2nd Class
Cadet Emmaunuel Ahoua, 3rd Class Cadet Alexander Rusin, 1st Class Cadet Victor Ochei,
and 1st class cadet SGT Sandy Saddler.
The upper division champion was Cadet Emmanuel Ahoua who’s speech was “Grit”. The lower
division champion was Cadet Joseph Bartlett and his speech was “Ambition”. Cadet Gabriel
Henderson served as the Master of Ceremonies.
Middle School Visit to Springfield Police
“On Thurs 28 April 2016, the 7th and 8th grade of Valley
Forge Military Academy visited the Springfield Police
Department in Quakertown PA to see an extensive WWII
collection of weapons, uniforms, equipment, and vehicles. All
the items were authentic and allowed history to come to life for
the cadets. We thank our hosts - Chief Mike McDonald and
Mr. Rob Ross who made this special event possible. The event
followed by a well-deserved Chinese buffet courtesy of the Parents’ Association!” Report from CPT

Lieutenant Colonel Nathan A. Minami – Professor of Military Science
LTC Nathan A. Minami received his commission from
the United States Military Academy in 1997. Following
graduation he attended training at Fort Benning, Georgia prior
to being assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment
in Schweinfurt, Germany where he served as a Rifle Platoon
Leader, Company Executive Officer, and Scout Platoon Leader.
In 2001 he attended the Infantry Captain's Career Course at
Fort Benning, followed by assignment to the 25th Infantry
Division (Light) in Hawaii where he served as the Deputy Chief
of G3 Exercises and Training and as the 2nd Brigade Assistant
Operations Officer prior to assuming command of Bravo
Company, 1st Battalion, and 14th Infantry Regiment in Iraq.
Upon completion of company command, LTC Minami
attended Advanced Civil Schooling at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology and was assigned in 2007 as an
Assistant Professor in the Department of Systems Engineering
at West Point. In 2009 LTC Minami was assigned as the Brigade Plans Officer for the 2nd Brigade
Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division. He then served as the Battalion Operations Officer and
Battalion Executive Officer for the 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment at Fort Drum from 20102012. LTC Minami most recently served as the Professor of Military Science at the University of
Mississippi from June 2012-December 2013, prior to reporting to Fort Stewart.
LTC Minami's awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service
Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Kosovo
Campaign Medal, the Airborne Badge, the Air Assault Badge, the Expert Infantryman's Badge, the
Combat Infantryman's Badge and the Ranger Tab.
VFMA&C Rifle Club
The VFMA Rifle Club held leadership
training at Echo Valley Training Center in
West Virginia from Fri 6 May – Sun 8 May
2016. Activities included camping, paintball,
and a day of carbine/pistol instruction from
a veteran US Marine Corps firearms
instructor. The entire weekend was made
possible by the connections, firearms,
ammunition and generosity of Mr. Van
Bentem P’18 and his company IDS Tactical.
We would like to thank the following parents
for their strong support of this trip; Mr.
Scott Freeman P’18, Mr. Alexander Korol
P’16, Mr. Terrance Froman P’20, and Mr.
William D’Annunzio P’19.

ABOUT “THE PAST IN REVIEW”
On the eve of the 88th Corps of Cadets, revisit the glorious past of Valley Forge under the inspired
guidance of its founder, LTG Milton G. Baker. During those years, precision and excellence in
every function were the hallmarks of the finest private military academy in the United States.
Thousands of alumni will remember these times with honor and gratitude.
First produced in 1987 on videotape but now technologically updated to DVD format, here again is
the narrated compilation of all films acquired from the first 40 years of VFMA&C, as submitted by
alumni, parents and staff. This 107 minute documentary begins with a stroll through the fire ruins at
Devon, and continues at the present site in Wayne, through most of the Baker years into 1968.
Narration is by LTG Milton H. Medenbach ’41H, BG Alfred A. Sanelli ’39 and BG Ralph E.
Jones.
The entire stereo musical underscore is from the many recorded works of the Valley Forge Military
Academy and College Band under the direction of the late COL D. Keith Feltham ’90H, “The
Duke” (as his respectful nickname evolved) presided over 27 all-scholarship cadet Bands, the longest
tour of any VF bandmaster, one whose alumni would later proclaim, “Together we stood his
inspection, played his concerts and parades; together we cherish his influence on our music and our
lives.”
Also heard are the choral groups of the late COL Robert V. Woodside, organist and choirmaster
for the period 1955 – 1971. During his tenure the cadet chorale reached levels of creative
performance never seen or heard in the years preceding. Many of the arrangements were written by
Woodside himself, a master musician.
