2011-2012 Report
Dear Friends and Supporters: It’s a pleasure to
celebrate BTAC’s recent accomplishments with you.
For us, the enclosed facts, figures, pictures, and
names are more than data. They’re a testament to
the hundreds of people who invested their time,
talent, and financial resources to make sure that
BTAC provided the highest quality arts programming
to the communities we serve. To our board members,
staff, contractors, volunteers, donors, and performing,
exhibiting, and teaching artists: thank you.
In fall 2011, the BTAC Board of Directors adopted a
strategic plan to guide the next three to five years.
On the next pages you’ll find the four goals we
committed to and just a few of the recent steps
we’ve taken toward achieving them.
To provide our audiences with extraordinary
arts experiences that entertain, educate, and
inspire, we increased our investments in Black Box
Theater productions to reach a level of excellence
commensurate with our Schneider Theater musicals.
Audiences responded to the high quality of the acting,
directing, and production values seen in Brighton
Beach Memoirs, Inspecting Carol, The 39 Steps, and
Crimes of the Heart, and Black Box Theater ticket sales
increased 61 percent over the prior 12 months. Further,
The 39 Steps became BCT’s first touring production
when it delighted audiences at Theatre L’Homme Dieu
in Alexandria, Minnesota in summer 2012.

Audiences were similarly wowed by the memorable exhibit The Atelier: On the Training of Painters. Presented through a
partnership with The Atelier Studio Program of Fine Art, this show featured more than 100 works and extensive signage to
demonstrate the evolution of Classical Realism from 18th century French painters to local artists working today. A catalog and
numerous educational talks and events provided additional opportunities for audiences to develop a deeper understanding
and appreciation for the work on the gallery walls.

(for Andrea Specht)
To develop talented artists through distinctive experiences that stimulate artistic and professional growth, we offered
a series of well attended “business of art” workshops on topics ranging from social media for artists to effective portfolio
presentation. Other new offerings for artists included a workshop on the Margolis Method with New York-based actor and
teacher Kari Margolis, and a presentation on the intricacies of professional stage management by Rachel McCutchen, stage
manager for the Broadway smash, Book of Mormon.
To reach larger and more diverse audiences, we developed several partnerships aimed at serving more youth and families.
With funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, we began offering free, artist-led afterschool workshops for
students at Bloomington’s three public middle schools. We also became one of Minneapolis-based Project Success’s
professional theater partners. Through Project Success, we offered hundreds of free theater tickets so Minneapolis school
children and their families could access high quality performances that might otherwise be out of reach.
In addition to creating partnerships as a vehicle to serve more youth and families over the next few years, we intend to
rebuild a children’s theater program focused on education and holistic youth development. We took a significant step in
summer 2012 with the first-ever Camp Shakespeare. In this two-week day camp led by professional actors, 27 students in
grades 2-12 explored the archetypes present in A Midsummer Night’s Dream through theater games, rehearsals, and two
free outdoor public performances of scenes from this beloved comedy.
Artist development is not solely a matter of classes and workshops. It happens organically in every aspect of our
programming. In the past year, we provided opportunities for talented emerging actors to work with and learn from some of
the most respected directors and choreographers in our region, including Gary Gisselman, Wendy Lehr, Joe Chvala, Michael
Matthew Ferrell, and numerous others. We also provided one-to-one coaching for visual artists on developing effective artist
statements, presenting work to galleries and grant-makers, and other practical tasks. Further, in a testament to the unique
role BTAC plays in our regional arts ecosystem, we gave artist John Schuerman a chance to bring his intriguing concept for a
“male/female” exhibit to fruition in the guest-curated Lace and Gunpowder.
Lastly, to develop the resources required to ensure our continued vitality and growth, we hired fundraising consultants
to help us create a five-year fundraising plan and projections consistent with the program growth contemplated by our
strategic plan. We also created a board development committee (BDC). Through recruitment, education, and evaluation, the
BDC’s role is to ensure that the board reaches its potential as an effective governance and fundraising body.
We’re very proud of how far BTAC has come since the merger that formed us in 2009, and we look forward to providing
exceptional arts programming to artists and audiences for many years to come. Thank you for your continued support and
participation on the journey.
With much appreciation,
Andrea SpechtBob Hawbaker
