W
elcome to Brunswick and
the Golden Isles. We’re glad
you’re here and hope you
enjoy your visit.
If you like goling, ishing, boating,
playing at the beach, bicycling or walking
through nature, then you’ve come to the
right place, this port city that is home to the
McGladrey Classic PGA Tournament, the
Brunswick Rockin’ Stewbilee, CoastFest
and the best Fourth of July ireworks show
in Georgia.
Glynn County, population 80,000 and
growing, includes Brunswick, the county
seat, and a half bushel of islands, including
St. Simons Island, Jekyll Island, Sea Island
and Little St. Simons Island, the only one of
the four that is accessible only by boat. Sea
Island is a gated community and home to
the ive-star Cloister. The Spa at Sea Island
and The Lodge at Sea Island also are 2015
ive-star facilities.
We are the home of Southeast Georgia
Health System, a fully staffed hospital with
a 24-hour emergency room, and Glynn
Place Mall, which some of you passed traveling from Interstate 95 to U.S. 17 on your
way to St. Simons Island or Jekyll Island.
In an emergency, call 911.
We also have three airports, the main
one being Brunswick Golden Isles Airport,
which offers daily nonstop lights to and
from Atlanta, Georgia’s capital. McKinnon
St. Simons Airport is located on St. Simons
Island and includes private lying services.
Jekyll Island Airport, a landing strip for
small planes, is on the riverside of Jekyll
Island.
The area is protected by the Glynn County Police Department, Brunswick Police
Department and Glynn County Sheriff’s
Ofice. The Georgia State Patrol handles
law enforcement duties on Jekyll Island, a
state park.
Glynn County also is home to and headquarters for the Federal Law Enforcement
Training Center, which trains the men and
women who protect us under the auspices
of the Department of Homeland Security.
The base also trains and polishes the skills
of law enforcement personnel attached to
other federal agencies.
High school graduates and other adults
can attend College of Coastal Georgia for a
four-year degree or Coastal Pines Technical College. Students in high school also
can get an early jumpstart on a career or
trade by enrolling in classes at Golden Isles
Career Academy.
Our community is served by a
12,500-student public school system, as
well as a number of secular and Christian-based private schools. In Georgia,
school oficially starts with kindergarten for
5-year-olds.
Five major highways connect Brunswick

to the nation — U.S. 341, U.S. 82, Interstate
95, all four-lane or six-lane highways, and
U.S. 17, which is four-laned or six-laned in
major congested areas. U.S. 82 also links
Brunswick to western states.
Main ofices for city, county and federal
governments are in the downtown Brunswick area.
There is a small galaxy of shopping centers and national and regional chain stores
like Target, Sears, JC Penney, Home Depot,
Lowe’s and Belk. There are a number of
other shops on the mainland and St. Simons
Island. The new Beach Village shops on
Jekyll Island are in the process of opening.
Looking for a place to eat? You’ll ind a
ton of choices inside this publication. Take
note that Sweet Georgia Shrimp, netted in
local waters, is a specialty.
If your pet gets sick, don’t worry. There are
plenty of vets and facilities around. There
are even places where you can leave a dog
or cat for the day or week.
If walking your dog on the beach, please
pay attention to the signs and make sure
it’s OK to be on the sand with your furry
companion. Leashes are required or recommended, depending where you go.
If you’re in the mood for a movie, there’s
Glynn Place Stadium Cinemas at Glynn
Place Mall off Golden Isles Parkway in
Brunswick and Island Cinemas at Shops
of Sea Island off Sea Island Road on St.
Simons Island. If huge is what you want,
check out the GTX Theater at the mall.
Wow!
Our major industries include Gulfstream,
Georgia-Paciic, Pinova, Rich Products
Corp. and a legion of others.
MAP International, a global Christian-based medical aid supplier to third
world nations and devastated areas, has a
major operation and warehouse in Brunswick.
Another interesting fact: our community
is among the top three auto-processing
ports in the United States, handling all
kinds of makes and models of vehicles, as
well as heavy-duty machinery, at the Port of
Brunswick’s Colonel’s Island terminal.
Now, before bragging any further, let us
tell you a little something about us. The irst
European settlement here was Fort Frederica in 1736 on St. Simons Island, a beautiful,
unincorporated island that is home to more
than 15,000 residents. Gen. James Oglethorpe settled the area, which soon became
known as Frederica Township. Its purpose
was to serve as a wall between England’s
interests to the north and Spanish claims
to the south. And it succeeded, having
repelled a surprise invasion by the Spanish
in the Battle of Bloody Marsh.
Both Fort Frederica and the site of
Bloody Marsh operate under the National
Park Service and can be visited daily and
weekends.

Continued from PAGE 3
If you lived in these parts during the time
of the American Civil War, you might have
noticed a large plume of smoke rising from
St. Simons Island at that time.
To prevent the Army of the Potomac from
being able to safely navigate the waters,
Confederate soldiers torched the lighthouse.
Didn’t work, though. Yankees — oops, we
mean Northeners — got here anyway. In
this part of Georgia, the worst destruction,
oddly enough, was caused by panicking
Southern forces. (By the way, the lighthouse
was rebuilt and remains on active duty).
Up the road, however, is another matter.
Ever see the movie “Glory?” Well, Darien,
about a 20-minute ride north of here, is the
town Union forces set on ire in that action.
Incidentally, the ilming of the attack by
Northern forces on Fort Wagner in Charleston, S.C., was done on Jekyll Island.
As the years went by this coastal area
transformed into a heavily traficked port.
If you were around in the 1800s and early
1900s, you probably would not have been
able to see the other side of the Brunswick
River because of the massive tangle of
masted ships anchored in the harbor, bringing and taking goods.
Today, the Port of Brunswick is still a
busy harbor, only now vehicles and heavy
machinery are its chief exports and imports.
If traveling south over the Sidney Lanier
Bridge, look across the river to the right
and you might catch a glimpse of one of the
The beach at St. Simons Island always draws a crowd.
huge ships unloading or loading vehicles
and machinery.
The terminal and car processing facilities
are located on Colonel’s Island, which also
receives grain and other farm products for
shipment around the globe.
If you look down on the right to the south
shore, you might see remnants of the slips
used to launch close to 100 Liberty Ships
built in Brunswick during World War II.
The slips are all that remain of a busy time
in the city’s history.
Down the river that forks to the right,
East River, is the other half of the Brunswick Port. Outside and inside storage includes paper products, potash and an assortment of other products used in agriculture
and daily living.
The towering Sidney Lanier Bridge, the
tallest in Georgia, replaces an older, smaller
bridge by the same name. State and federal
governments provided funding for the current version after its predecessor was struck
twice by vessels calling on the port. It was
declared a navigational hazard by the U.S.
Coast Guard. Ten people on the bridge were
killed in the irst collision in the 1970s.
There were no injuries when the bridge, a
lift-span structure then, was rammed into
a second time in the early 1980s. Pilots
complained that lining up the giant ships
for what used to be a narrow opening was
precarious at best.
The new bridge offers a vessels calling on
the port greater horizontal clearance.
Like to picnic? Our community offers
a long list of choices for those who like
to pack a lunch and eat outdoors. You’ll
ind picnic areas at both beaches, on St.
Simons Island and Jekyll Island, as well as
in the many parks that dot Glynn County.
There’s Blythe Island Regional Park on
Georgia Highway 303. Rent a canoe and
paddle down water trails, or walk or bike
down one of its many paths before or after
sitting down to your feast. The park is on
a saltwater river and features a freshwater
lake where you can swim or ish.
There’s also Altamaha Regional Park
on U.S. Highway 341. As its namesake
implies, it is on the Altamaha River. Overlook Park on U.S. Highway 17 and Sidney
Lanier Park, the open ground at the foot
of the southside of the bridge, also are
nice places to picnic.
A friendly warning to picnickers: do not
feed the gulls. There might be only one
on the ground, but you can bet your next
meal that there are dozens more hiding in
the bushes.
Swimming, canoeing, kayaking — don’t
get us started. In addition to the public
beaches on St. Simons and Jekyll islands,
the Golden Isles offers public swimming
pools and waterparks.
Want to try your hand at crabbing or
ishing? Visit the St. Simons Island Pier or
Jekyll Island Pier. You’ll ind tackle and
bait at nearby businesses.
Well, that’s Brunswick and the Golden
Isles in a nutshell. You’ll ind more information on the community and its many
features in Explore.

island and the F.J. Torras Causeway,
the four-lane road that will bring you
here.
Our list of places to see includes an

Hofwyl-Broadield Plantation: this state
historic site was an active rice plantation
before and after the American Civil War.
Tourists are able to walk the grounds, visit
a museum and the main house. A short ilm

Mary Ross Waterfront Park: This cityowned park is located on East River, one of
the rivers that serves the Port of Brunswick.
Visit it on the right day and catch a glimpse
of some of the large ships that transport
cargo in and out of the port (to the left of the
park) and possibly a ishing trawler or two
that ply the ocean off Georgia’s seacoast for
delicious shrimp. While there, take a gander
at a large model of a Liberty Ship. Nearly
100 of these vessels were built here to keep
our brave soldiers supplied during World
War II; foot of Gloucester Street at Bay
Street; always open; no admission.
Downtown Brunswick: You’ll ind some
of the city’s oldest commercial buildings
here that now house a variety of restaurants
(feel free to go in and order from the menu),
art and crafts shops and a hometown coffee
shop; Newcastle Street, just one block away
from Mary Ross Waterfront Park; business
hours vary.
Old Glynn County Courthouse: This
historic facility, built in 1907 to replace an
earlier version, is one of the best architecturally designed courthouses in Georgia
(and that’s saying a lot in a state with 159
counties.) But it’s not just the design of the
building, which today houses government
ofices, that will tease your eyes. It will be

Christ Church Frederica and Cemetery: This still-active church is one of the
oldest in Georgia, built some 70 years after
the establishment of Fort Frederica in 1736.
The Episcopal parish itself, however, began
with the birth of the fort. Among its notable
ministers were the Rev. Charles Wesley,
chaplain to Gen. James Oglethorpe, and
his brother John Wesley, who delivered one
of the irst sermons; 6329 Frederica Road;
church is open 2 to 5 p.m Tuesday through
Sunday and cemetery is open during the
same days from sunrise to sunset; 912-6388683 or http://www.christchurchfrederica.

St. Simons Island Lighthouse and
Keeper’s Dwelling, A.W. Jones Heritage
Center, and Maritime Center: These three
historic structures and sites are operated by
the Coastal Georgia Historical Society and
are located in the general vicinity of the
lighthouse, 101 12th Street.
Most visitors to the island are drawn to
and fascinated by the lighthouse, which
remains in operation today, though few are
willing to take a climb up its 129 steps to
the top (but you’re more than welcome to
try. Even you, Dad).
Get your bearings here to visit the A.W.
Jones Heritage Center, where you’ll ind
exhibits and a museum shop.
The Maritime Center also is an educational stop. Learn about the island’s military
history and the ecology of Georgia’s barrier
islands.
Hours for the three are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Mondays through Saturdays and 1:30 to
5 p.m. Sundays. The Maritime Museum
Old City Hall, Downtown Brunswick
closes from 12 to 1 p.m. Mondays through
its grove of ancient moss-draped oaks, a
setting favored by locals for exchanging
wedding vows. No tours of the building are
given, but feel free to roam the grounds anytime; 701 G Street.
Overlook Park: This park at the foot of
Gloucester Street and U.S. Hwy. 17 honors
the 18th century poet Sidney Lanier, who
penned the famous “Marshes of Glynn”
poem from inspiration drawn from the
saltwater marsh here, in Glynn County; no
admission; always open.
City residences: If you like old Southern-style homes, then you might want to
steer the car to Old Town and to avenues
like Union Street. Best advice for getting
there is to get on Newcastle Street downtown and drive south. You’ll discover
numerous small and large public squares
and parks, too.
Jekyll Island
Ah, Jekyll Island — a millionaires’ playground, or at least it used to be.
All but abandoned by the rich and famous
around World War II, it was sold to Georgia
in 1947 for the tidy sum of $675,000.
Today, the state operates it as a resort
island that’s run by the Jekyll Island Authority, which is investing millions of dollars in
new facilities, including a new convention
center, hotels and shopping district known
as Beach Village.
The $6 it costs to go onto the island is
worth every penny.
Don’t worry about inding the island. Just
look for the tall bridge on U.S. Hwy. 17. The
Downing Musgrove Causeway, the two-lane
road that connects the island to the mainland, is located near the southern foot of the
Sidney Lanier Bridge.
Millionaire’s Village: This is a mustsee for those who would like to eyeball the
“summer cottages” of the rich and famous
— families like Rockefeller, Goodyear,
Vanderbilt and Morgan — in the late 1800s
and early 1900s, as well as the Jekyll Island
Club Hotel, a facility restored in the 1980s
and still in use today. Visit the Jekyll Island
Museum at 100 Stable Road for information
about Millionaire’s Village and tours; 912635-4036 or go to www.jekyllisland.com/
jekyll-island-authority/ and scroll down the
page. The village and museum is located
on the back side of the island, on the Jekyll
River, and is open daily and weekends.
Georgia Sea Turtle Center: This is
where sea turtles that are injured or caught
in cold water — never a good thing for
reptiles — go to be medicated or operated
on and to recuperate. Consider it a sea turtle
hospital that you can tour and talk to the
patients (don’t expect them to answer back;
they’re resting). It’s also a place to go to
learn a lot about these endangered sea creatures. If you’re lucky, you might catch the
Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation, Brunswick
center on a day when it is releasing a cured
turtle to the sea.
And while on the beach, please stay away
from areas marked with wooden pegs,
lags, ribbons or strips of cloth. These mark
nests where eggs left by mom will eventually hatch into baby turtles. And if you’re
walking on the beach at night and happen
to come across a turtle, stay clear of it and
turn lashlights off to prevent disorientation;
214 Stable Road; 912-635-4444 or gstc.
jekyllisland.com; daily and weekends 9 a.m.
to 5 p.m.; admission charged.
The Wanderer: Learn about the inal
documented slave ship to land on the
shores of the United States of America,
the Wanderer, at Jekyll South Park (on the
south end of the island), the very site where
the last men and women doomed to slavery
irst stepped onto American soil. Exhibits
explain the story and a memorial sculpture
pays homage to the 400 unfortunate souls
brought to this land against their will. This
ship and crew were captured by the United
States; park is open daily and weekends; no
admission.
The Horton House: Today, only the
shell of the tabby house built by William
Horton, a major in the British army, remains
standing. This 1742 structure is actually
the second home he built, his 1737 wooden
house having been burned to the ground by
retreating Spanish forces; 375 Riverview
Drive; open daily and weekends; no admission; always open.
Darien
Darien is a small river town about 20
minutes north of Brunswick on U.S. Hwy.
17. It’s a beautiful drive across marshland
and rivers.
Fort King George: This fort protected the British Empire to the north in the
Colonies from Spanish curiosity from 1721
to 1735; 302 McIntosh Road; 9 a.m. to
5 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday admission
charged; 912-437-4770 or www.gastateparks.org/fortkinggeorge

T
he Golden Isles doesn’t discriminate when it
comes to the game of golf.
The area offers memberships at a variety of private
courses, but the average golfer won’t have to go out
of his way to ind a course that’s in great shape and
offers scenic views.
“Our memberships are extremely reasonable,” said
Rob Ellis, head golf professional at Jekyll Island Golf
Club. “You can be a member at Sea Island and spend
as much as you want to spend, or you can be a member here or Santcuary Cove or Coastal Pines, and not
spend an arm and leg. Regardless of how much you
spend, you’re going to get quality golf courses. You
have a wide array of options.”
Eight PGA Tour pros call the Golden Isles home,
including 20-time PGA Tour winner Davis Love III,
2007 Masters champion Zach Johnson, 2012 Players
The Jones Cup is played at Ocean Forest on Sea Island.
Championship winner Matt Kuchar and 2014 John
Deere Classic champion Brian Harman, plus LPGA
Tour members Katie Burnett and Garrett Phillips,
both natives to the area.
With the facilities offered by Sea Island Golf
Club — home to the Seaside, Plantation and Retreat
courses and its world-renowned Golf Performance
Center — and Frederica Golf Club, it’s not hard to
understand why.
Professional players are hardly strangers to the
community. The McGladrey Classic, held each year
at Seaside, is billed as one of the most player-friendly
events on the PGA Tour, a place where golf fans can
interact closely with the pros. This year’s McGladrey,
the sixth edition of the event, will encompass two
courses for the irst time — Seaside and Plantation —
and move from its traditional October date to November on what will be the 2016 PGA Tour schedule.

Ellis, who grew up on the plains of
Oklahoma before arriving to the Golden
Isles 13 years ago, said he was struck by
the seclusion and peacefulness of the area’s
courses.
“I think the biggest thing we have going
for us is the unique beauty,” Ellis said. “As
we say on Jekyll, it’s uninteruppted. It’s
about the nature, the animals and enjoying
the golf course. Most of the courses here
are pretty secluded. I think that’s a unique
thing for our area.”
It’s not common to ind natural wildlife,
such as alligators, deer or even bald eagles
on the Isles’ courses, especially at Jekyll’s
Indian Mound, Oleander, Pine Lakes and
Great Dunes courses.
“It’s the nearest faraway place,” Ellis
said.

The Isles offer kayaking opportunities.
RECREATION
While golf and ishing are two of the
biggest attractions drawing visitors to the
Golden Isles, the largest by far is water.
Whether it’s the ocean, rivers or just a cool
pool, there are numerous other activities – in the water or not – to enjoy in the
outdoors in Georgia’s Golden Isles.
Wildlife viewing, biking, skateboarding,
paddle boarding, and kayaking are also
activities to be found here.
Whether you are looking to just sit back
and relax or want to be more active, there
are many fun activities to do in Glynn
County.
BEACHES
Jekyll Island
Driftwood Beach
Driftwood Beach is at the northern end
of Jekyll Island and is ideal for nature
lovers and photographers. Decorated with
weathered, naturally sculpted driftwood,
the beach is the back-drop for many
wedding ceremonies and family pictures.
Insider’s hint: It’s truly amazing at sunrise.
Great Dunes Park
The beach area at Great Dunes Park is
in the middle of the island right on North
Beachview Drive. It is centerstage for
all beach goers and with the new Beach
Village shopping area right next door and
easy access to the beach and bike trails,
Great Dunes is the perfect hub for a day of
beach fun.
Glory Beach
Step off the Glory Beach Boardwalk at
the southern end of the island and visualize the penultimate scene in the 1989
Civil War classic Glory. This is where that
scene was shot. It is the beautiful home to
several migratory birds and other wildlife
and is the perfect spot for wildlife watchers and of course, movie buffs.
St. Andrews Beach
St. Andrews beach is the only westward
facing beach on Jekyll Island. It is the
perfect place to spend a late afternoon and
evening watching the sun set. The park
has a family oriented picnic area with
screened pavilions for use throughout the
year.
St. Simons Island
East Beach
The East Beach area of St. Simons
Island consists of three main access areas
– Gould’s Inlet, Coast Guard Beach and
Massengale Park. All three wrap around
the southeastern edge of the island and are
the perfect place for a day of fun in the
sun or quiet, early morning walk along the
shore.
Gould’s Inlet
The northern-most East Beach access
point, Gould’s Inlet is the perfect place for
some birdwatching and even a little ishing. The beach area there has limited parking and less sand than other access points.
One good way to explore the inlet is by sea

kayak, which can be launched there.
U.S. Coast Guard Station
The Coast Guard Station beach is located at the Maritime Museum on First Street
and is the quickest and easiest access to
the beach on St. Simons. Coast Guard
Station has the largest parking lot at the
beach, but get there early before it ills up.
Massengale Park
Located at 1350 Ocean Boulevard, Massengale Park is the best public beach for
families on St. Simons. The park includes
a bath house and a fun playground, all
located in the shade of some live oaks and
other maritime forest trees.
BEACH SAFETY
Lifeguards patrol on St. Simons Island beaches from Memorial Day to
Labor Day; 7 days a week, 11:00 a.m.
to 5:00 p.m. There are no lifeguards on
Jekyll’s beaches.
PETS ON THE BEACH
Furry friends are also welcome at some
of the Golden Isles beaches. Each beach
area has different rules and pets are only
allowed during certain seasons and specific hours during the day.
East Beach Area, St. Simons Island
Animals are prohibited on this beach
from Memorial Day through Labor Day
between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. From 6
p.m. to 9 a.m., dogs are allowed on the
beach and do not need to be leashed, but
must be in the owner’s immediate control.
From Memorial Day weekend through
Labor Day, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., dogs are
allowed on the beach--with or without a
leash.
Jekyll Island Beaches
Depending on which access point you
use, your fur baby is welcome to enjoy the
beach with you. If you are accessing the
beach in a wildlife viewing location you
will see signs asking that you “Keep all
dogs on a short leash” or stating No pets
allowed in this area. Glory Beach does not
allow pets. Unless otherwise posted, dogs
are allowed on the beach as long as they
