SUBJECT:
Entering Class Information from Student Affairs - Mailing One
Welcome to the 2016 Entering Class of the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine! We hope you
are excited as you begin to make plans to start your medical education journey. You will quickly learn that there
are a significant number of responsibilities that you will need to meet in your chosen profession of medicine. This
initial communications packet includes several important items that require your response. This will be your first
major set of tasks as an entering medical student. It is very important that you carefully review each item provided
and submit all required materials in a timely fashion.
Pre-matriculation and Orientation Week
Your official start date for medical school is Thursday, August 18, 2016. All entering students are required
to attend Pre-matriculation and Orientation Week (August 18-28, 2016). Mandatory seminars and activities
are scheduled daily. We strongly encourage you to relocate to your preclinical community by no later than
Monday, August 15, 2016. This will allow you time to settle into the community prior to the start of medical
school.
Matriculation and White Coat Ceremony for the 2016 Entering Class
Pre-matriculation and Orientation Week culminates with the Matriculation and White Coat Ceremony for the
entering class. This ceremony is a public recognition of the formal first step into the medical profession and will be
held on Sunday, August 28, 2016, at 3:00 p.m. at the DeVos Performance Hall in Grand Rapids, Michigan. You
will receive your first official white coat as a part of this traditional ceremony. It is a wonderful opportunity to
celebrate with family and friends.
•
Please see the attached Save the Date for the 2016 Matriculation and White Coat Ceremony. Feel free to
share it with your family and friends. You will be asked to confirm your number of guests by mid-August.
(See attached 2016 Matriculation and White Coat Ceremony “Save the Date”)
MSU Net ID and Email Account – Deadline Wednesday, June 15, 2016
When you are officially admitted to Michigan State University, you will receive your personal identification or
student number (APID) and PAN (personal access number). Using your APID and PAN, you can then activate
your MSU NET ID. Your NET ID is your electronic identity at MSU. Directions for activating your MSU NET ID
can be found on the Admissions website at http://mdadmissions.msu.edu/ApplicationProcess/accepted/osas.htm.
After you have activated your MSU Net ID, you should log into mail.msu.edu (https://mail.msu.edu), the official
MSU email system, and activate your MSU email account.

Reminder - you must activate both your MSU Net ID and your MSU email account by Wednesday, June
15th. We will establish a listserv for the 2016 Entering Class of the College of Human Medicine that will be the
source for future communication of important information. Once this listserv is established, all emails will be sent
to your official MSU email account only.
Housing
We do not recommend purchasing a home for your time here at Michigan State University College of Human
Medicine. As a community-based medical school, students often complete early and later phases of training
in different communities. Ownership of a home does not have an influence on community placements.

Matriculating Student Questionnaire (MSQ)
The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) is a not-for-profit association whose members include all
accredited medical schools in the United States. Each year the AAMC conducts a confidential online survey of
matriculating students (Matriculating Student Questionnaire or MSQ) to better understand the needs of first-year
medical students. This year’s Matriculating Student Questionnaire (MSQ) went online Wednesday, June 1, 2016.
The survey takes approximately 10-20 minutes to complete and will available for completion through September
15, 2016.
•
Beginning June 1, 2016 each accepted medical student is sent a unique survey link to access the MSQ. The
survey links are sent from [email protected] to the email address students submitted to the American Medical
College Application Service (AMCAS). The AAMC will send reminder emails on July 1, July 20, August
15, and September 1st to those students who have not yet completed the MSQ. The reminders will also be
sent from [email protected]. Students who experience problems accessing the MSQ should contact MSQ
staff directly at [email protected] and include their full name and AAMC ID in their message.
(See attached 2016 MSQ Flyer)
•
We strongly encourage you to complete the MSQ. Responses to the MSQ are invaluable in helping to
shape the future direction of medical education. Please complete the survey by Friday, June 17th. We
strongly recommend that you complete the MSQ as soon as possible so that it is not the last thing on your
list of to-do items.
•
Early in the fall we will conduct prize drawings for those who complete the MSQ. Your drawing entry will
be your MSQ completion confirmation page. Upon completion of the MSQ, you will have the opportunity
to print out an MSQ completion confirmation page. Please print your completion confirmation page, pack
it away somewhere safe, and bring it with you as your entry for some fun-filled activities and prizes in the
fall.
