Welcome to Rockport Music and our seaside Shalin Liu
Performance Center, which is considered “one of the most
beautiful halls in the country” (Boston Phoenix). Our upcoming
2015-16 Season brings another year of exciting artists,
including the Van Cliburn winner Vadym Kholodenko, French
jazz singer Madeleine Peyroux, legendary singer-songwriter
Jimmy Webb, and incredible Celtic fiddler Natalie MacMaster,
among others. This year, we’ve added a new series of HD
broadcasts-the Bolshoi Ballet. We hope you will consider
one of our subscriptions which provide savings, including
a flexible concert subscription with the purchase of four or
more concerts of your choosing, as well as subscriptions
to the Metropolitan Opera and Bolshoi Ballet broadcasts.

Now in his twentieth year as Artistic Director of
the Rockport Chamber Music Festival, pianist David
Deveau has been critically acclaimed internationally
for his expressive and poetic interpretations of solo
piano repertoire ranging from Haydn to the present.
The New York Times wrote about his concert
performance as “one of those musical events
that linger long in the memory…for lyric expression
that goes straight to the heart of the matter.”
Winner of the coveted gold medal at the 2013
Van Cliburn International Piano Competition,
Kholodenko captured the attention of jury,
audience, and critics alike for powerful,
performances that “showed the guts of a true
superartist” (San Francisco Classical Voice).
Kholodenko also took home prizes for best
performance of the piano quintet and best
performance of the commissioned work.

Among its many awards, the Elias Quartet has won the 2010 BBC Music
Magazine’s Newcomer of the Year award, the 2014 Australian Art Music Award,
as well as a Mentoring Scholarship from the Beethoven-haus in Bonn, and
second prize in the Sidney Griller Prize at the London String Quartet Competition.
This year, the Quartet will undertake
a groundbreaking project; performing
and recording the complete string
quartets of Beethoven. This program
is a part of that ambitious project.

Formed at Oberlin Conservatory in 2006, the Jasper
Quartet has had tremendous success at several of
the most prestigious competitions, including the
Coleman and Fischoff competitions, and the 2012
Cleveland Quartet Award. The Quartet has
been hailed as “sonically delightful and
expressively compelling” (The Strad)
and the members are currently the
Professional Quartet-in-Residence at
Temple University's Center for Gifted
Young Musicians.
A new generation from the great Russian
musical tradition, the Hermitage Piano
Trio is distinguished by its exuberant
musicality, interpretative range, and
sumptuous sound. The Washington Post
raved that “three of Russia’s most
spectacular young soloists… turned
in a performance of such power and
sweeping passion that it left you nearly out of breath.” During the 2014 Rockport
Chamber Music Festival, Sergey and Ilya performed a spectacular concert to
tremendous critical and audience response.

Heralded as the quintessential American string
quartet, the Grammy Award-winning Juilliard
String Quartet is the first ensemble to play all
six Bartók quartets in the United States, and its
performances of Schoenberg’s quartets helped
establish the works as cornerstones of the modern
string quartet literature. In 2011 the Quartet became
the first classical music ensemble to receive a
Lifetime Achievement Award from the National
Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.

Keep Me in Your Heart for a While: The Best of
Madeleine Peyroux

Spyro Gyra
One of the most beloved fusion bands in the world,
Spyro Gyra continues to find the sweet spot between
jazz, funk, and new age music. The multiple Grammy
winning quintet hasn’t lost any of its swagger more
than 40 years after their founding. Their most recent
record, The Rhinebeck Sessions, attests to their
continuing funky excellence and vitality.

Harold López-Nussa
Following in the footsteps of greats like Chucho Valdes
and Gonzalo Rubalcaba, young Cuban pianist Harold
López-Nussa has exploded onto the Latin jazz scene
with an inventive, swinging Afro-Cuban style and jawdropping ability. The Havana-born pianist and composer
has created a sound that is unencumbered by genre
boundaries, forging a unique blend that folds classical,
jazz and pan-Latin rhythms together for a rich hybrid.

Acoustic Alchemy
The U.K.-based instrumental powerhouse
blends jazz and pop with flamenco, reggae,
and folk for a brand of new age fusion unlike
anything heard before. With a string of popular,
jazz-inflected albums like Red Dust & Spanish
Lace, The New Edge and AArt, the Grammynominated group has performed for over 30
years, and their sound remains as infectious
and fresh as their early 80’s beginnings.

With a voice that often recalls the great Billie Holiday,
Peyroux’s repertoire mixes pre-war blues/jazz standards,
contemporary classics (Bob Dylan, Serge Gainsbourg,
Elliott Smith) along with her own strong compositions.
Peyroux learned her craft busking on the streets of Paris,
singing blues and early jazz tunes until being signed by
Rounder Records where her unique phrasing and earthy
tones found a quick audience. She has now released seven acclaimed records,
the most recent being Blue Room, an homage to Ray Charles’s sophisticated
blend of jazz, soul and country.

Cape Ann Big Band
Enjoy the holidays with Cape Ann’s own 17-piece big band performing holiday
favorites, old and new, infused with a bit of jazz, swing, New Orleans street
bands, soul, and rock n’ roll. In just a short span of time, the Cape Ann Big
Band has become one of the most sought after ensembles in the North Shore.

Taj Mahal
A bonafide blues and rock legend, the inimitable Taj Mahal
has been instrumental in preserving and shaping American
roots music. With his booming baritone, nimble fingerpicking guitar playing and pioneering fusion of blues with
disparate world and folk styles, the iconic artist has earned
himself a place amongst the titans of American music.

Hot Club of San Francisco:
Postcards from Gypsy Land
One of the vanguards of the current gypsy jazz revival,
Hot Club of San Francisco (HCSF) has integrated Django
Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli’s jazz manouche style
with their own disparate influences to create a unique
sound of their own. Led by guitarist Paul Mehling, HCSF
now stands at the forefront of the Hot Club genre, with
over 10 gypsy-flavored jazz albums, including Lady in
Red, Swing This and Postcards from Gypsyland.

Joan Armatrading
OPENING ACT: Melissa Ferrick
A British folk icon, singer-songwriter Joan
Armatrading is known by her distinctive, dynamic
voice and uncanny ability to shift seamlessly
between folk, rock, new wave, blues, jazz and
funk. She is hailed as “Britain’s first lady of song”

Visions from Cape Breton: A Family Celebration
With Natalie MacMaster
No single artist has done more for popularizing Cape
Breton fiddle music than Natalie MacMaster, who has
been recording and touring for more than three decades,
earning multiple awards, including two Juno Awards for
best instrumental album, the East Coast Music Awards’
Female Artist of the Year, Roots/Traditional Artist of the
Year and Instrumental Artist of the Year. She has also
been named Fiddler of the Year by the Canadian Country
Music Association.

Marshall Crenshaw
Jeff Austin Band
Formerly of Yonder Mountain String Band
Marshall Crenshaw is a guitar pop craftsman of the highest
order, churning out rock and roll tunes since the early 80s.
Hits like “Someday, Someway” and “Cynical Girl” launched
the singer-songwriter into the pantheon of power pop
luminaries, and with the release of an acclaimed EP just
last May, it’s clear Crenshaw’s melodic gifts haven’t
dimmed.
After several years as part of the Yonder Mountain String
Band, mandolinist Jeff Austin has gone out on his own and
is now touring with his own band. He is celebrated for his
fleet fingers and penchant for improvisation on stage with
songs that range from tender folk ballads to driving
country-rock. His Yep Roc Records debut, The Simple Truth,
came out in 2015.

Renaissance
A pioneering British progressive rock band
injecting classical and folk music elements
into its sound, Renaissance had great
success throughout the 70’s, and even
became the first British band to play three
consecutive sold-out nights at Carnegie Hall.
The culmination of their popularity came
with their hit single “Northern Lights” off
their 1978 record A Song for All Seasons.

In a concert showcasing two of the most successful songwriters of
the modern era, the legendary Jimmy Webb teams up with Karla
Bonoff for a night of original pop classics. Jimmy Webb remains
one of the few modern songwriters to become a genuine superstar
on his writing talents alone. His list of hits written for other
performers include “Up Up and Away” (The 5th Dimension), “Wichita
Lineman” (Glen Campbell), “MacArthur Park” (Donna Summer)
and many more. His recent CD’s—Just Across the River and Still
Within the Sound of My Voice—are saturated with guest stars from
Lyle Lovett to Billy Joel. Karla Bonoff also got her start as a
songwriter, writing hits for Linda Ronstadt, Wynonna Judd and
Bonnie Raitt before venturing out on her own. She scored a Top
20 hit with 1982’s “Personally” and had great success with movie
soundtracks, landing songs in Footloose, About Last Night and others.

WGBH PRESENTS
Danú
A Christmas Celtic Sojourn
Danú remains one of Ireland’s most cherished Irish
folk bands and are among the leaders of the new
traditionalist movement in Celtic music. They have
been thrilling audiences with their instrumental
virtuosity and powerfully emotive ballads for close to
20 years. Voted Best Overall Traditional Act by Irish
Music, as well as Best Traditional Group twice in the
BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, Danú recently released Buan,
a rousing new collection of reels, jigs and ballads that
was awarded a 4 star review in the Irish Times.

Now in its second decade of concerts
around New England, A Christmas Celtic
Sojourn is again returning to Rockport.
Brian O’Donovan’s A Celtic Sojourn has
thrilled radio audiences for twentyeight years. For the last thirteen, the
Christmas-time live version of the
show has drawn on Celtic, Pagan, and
Christian traditions to celebrate the
music of this season. First launched in
2003, A Christmas Celtic Sojourn reflects the compelling and diverse offerings
of the weekly national radio program.

We Banjo 3
A young Galway-based foursome that combines
bluegrass and Appalachian old time string band
music with traditional Irish folk, We Banjo 3 is

William Kentridge stages Berg’s shocking masterpiece
about a sexually irresistible young woman whose
wanton behavior causes destruction for those who fall
under her spell. James Levine conducts the opera,
which he has led 30 Met performances of the work,
including the company premiere in 1977. Marlis
Petersen performs the title role with Susan Graham
as the Countess Geschwitz.
VERDI: Il Trovatore

Anna Netrebko performs in her highly
anticipated Met role debut as Leonora,
the tortured heroine of Il Trovatore. Dmitri
Hvorostovsky sings Count di Luna in the first
pairing of the two Russian superstars at the
Met since 2002, with Yonghoon Lee as
Manrico, the title character, Štefan Kocán as
Ferrando, and Dolora Zajick in her signature
role of the demented gypsy Azucena.

in her role debut as his wife, Desdemona, and Željko Lu čić as Otello’s sinister
rival, Iago.

For the first time since Enrico Caruso starred in the opera in 1916, the Met will
present Bizet’s lush, melodic romance Les Pêcheurs de Perles (The Pearl Fishers),
in a production by director Penny Woolcock. Gianandrea Noseda conducts a
cast led by Diana Damrau as the beautiful priestess Leïla with Matthew
Polenzani and Mariusz Kwiecien singing the roles of Nadir and Zurga, the two
pearl fishers whose friendship is tested by their rivalry for Leïla’s affections.

Swedish dramatic soprano Nina Stemme sings her first Met performances
of Puccini’s Chinese ice princess, with Anita Hartig as the angelic slave girl
Liù, and Marco Berti as Calàf, the suitor who risks his head for Turandot’s
hand. Paolo Carignani conducts Franco Zeffirelli’s visually spectacular 1987
production.

James Levine conducts the first Met revival of
Wagner’s Tannhäuser since 2004, seen in Otto
Schenk’s 1977 production. Johan Botha sings
the demanding title role, in a cast that also
includes Peter Mattei as Wolfram; Günther
Groissböck as the Landgraf; Eva-Maria
Westbroek as Elisabeth and Michelle DeYoung
as Venus, the human and divine rivals for
Tannhäuser’s affection.

interpretation of the title role in Madama Butterfly

MOZART: The Magic Flute
The Magic Flute enchanted opera lovers from
around the world with the whimsical humor
and breathtaking puppetry of Julie Taymor’s
hit production, presented in a shortened
English-language version. Under the baton of
Maestro James Levine, a winning ensemble
cast—Nathan Gunn, Ying Huang, Matthew
Polenzani, Erika Miklosa, and René Pape—
brings fresh life to Mozart's timeless fairy tale.

A Brazilian group playing traditional choro music,
Choro das 3 brings a style that shares a similar
feel to New Orleans jazz, ragtime and even
bluegrass. A family ensemble, the group has
recorded three acclaimed albums and played for
millions of people (including Brazil’s presidents,
governors and ministers). Over the years they have
developed a special project called “Choro Concerts
at School” that teaches young people the amazing
richness of choro music.

members of the Elias Quartet on Beethoven and his works being performed
