Award winning design for 2005 GDUSA In-House Design Contest It’s OK to get help If none of your efforts gets you back on track or you feel overwhelmed by your situation, you may want to meet with a professional debt counselor who can act as a go-between for you and your creditors. Look for low-cost budget counseling services that can quickly evaluate your situation, set up a budget for you and negotiate repayment of your debts. If you qualify, contact the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society. Also check the telephone directory, newspapers and magazines, or contact your credit union. Navy Federal offers free budgetary counseling to members in need. What do I look for? There are two types of professionals: credit counseling agencies and debt negotiators. You’ll want to find out: You can do it. • Is the company nonprofit (and not charging a lot of fees)? • What services do they offer? • Are the counselors Certified Credit Counselors? This credit union is federally insured by the National Credit Union Administration © 2004 Navy Federal Credit Union NFCU 1273 (4-04) • Is the organization accredited by the Council on Accreditation for Children and Family Services (COA)? STEP 3 STEP 3 Getting out of debt! navyfcu.org Campaign: Navy Federal Getting out of debt brochure When and how to get professional help also ask your creditors to reduce the interest rate, waive late fees or bring the account up to a current status— conditions your creditors are under no obligation to accept. • Are the services confidential? • Do they offer in-person counseling? In the case of credit card issuers, your agreement will usually require that you return your credit cards or sign an affidavit stating that the cards have been destroyed. • Are they a member of the National Foundation for Credit Counseling? Your first meeting Once you’ve chosen a counselor, you’ll need to prepare for your first meeting. Gather several current pay stubs, your current credit card statements and other relevant documentation. You’ll probably be asked to fill out a financial profile sheet, similar to the one in the back of this brochure, spelling out the details of your income, assets, expenses and debts, as well as any demand letters, legal actions or conversations you’ve had with your creditors. After reviewing your case, the counselor will send a letter to each of your creditors asking them to work with you and to accept a reduced payment from you. The letters may Once payment amounts are established, the counselor will create a budget for you to follow and will help make sure you stick to it. You’ll still have to keep track of your creditors’ accounts and tell the counselor if you miss a payment. But now when creditors contact you for money, refer them directly to your counselor. You’ll probably stay in touch with your counselor until all debts are repaid. Stay away from companies whose ads promise a quick fix. It’s impossible to get out of debt or erase bad credit overnight. Only time, effort and a solid plan for debt repayment will get you out of trouble. Target: Members that have gotten themselves in a difficult situation financially. Especially enlisted Sailors and Marines that have fallen victim to “Payday Loan” providers and are in a never ending cycle of mounting debt. Before you respond to any ads, the Federal Trade Commission cautions against companies that: Want you to pay them before providing credit repair services Don’t tell you your legal rights or what you can do yourself, for free Recommend that you not contact a credit bureau directly Advise you to dispute all information in your credit report or take any action that seems illegal, such as creating a new credit identity. Concept: Started by sketching ideas, working with copywriter, presented to creative director, Produced tight digital sketches for Vice President to provide input, then presentation to client to get feedback. Total process took 9 months.
