Juan Fernando Ayora
Born in Ecuador in 1969 to a photographer father, Juan Fernando began, at an early age, taking portraits of local bullfighting scenes around the small
town and haciendas surrounding his native Quito.
The grace and style of the bullfighter, along with the exquisite, colorful and painstakingly embroidered costumes imbued him with a sense of an aesthetic
at a very young age.
After obtaining a law degree at la Universidad Catolica in Quito, and a brief stint in local politics, Juan Fernando pursued photography as his full time profession at the same time he became involved in environmental issues, specifically in saving Ecuador’s expansive rainforest, the Yasuni.
This led him to take his cameras into the jungle on several occasions, sponsored by the Ecuadorian Government and The United Nations, to photograph its
indigenous community, the Waorani tribe.
This project resulted in the award winning documentary, Yasuni, which he also co produced and which made its debut at this years Miami International
Film Festival.
Juan Fernando divides his time between New York City, Miami, and South America, where he works on commercial and Art projects. His clients include
international newspapers and magazines and recent ad campaigns include Coca Cola, Remy Martin and Verizon.
Known for his portraits and his ability to find the soul of his subjects, he has photographed athletes, celebrities and Presidents.

TORERO
Torero, is a project that summarizes several of my passions- bull fighting, portraits and fashion.
The bull fighter, the mythical figure about whom Hemingway wrote, men that live on the brink of life and death, their faces are the canvas of a thousand
emotions. Their suits of lights “traje de luces” are real master pieces of fashion and art. Handmade with silk and golden thread, they help give a mysterious aura to the already intriguing figure of the bull fighter.
I had the opportunity to photograph José Antonio Bustamante, a young and upcoming bull fighter. He sat for me in Quito on the eve before his departure
to Spain to begin his 2013 campaign in the land of Manolete.
The images of this collection search for the soul of the man, while sharing the art and beauty of the traditional costumes worn by the bullfighter.
Inspired on the classic images of Goya, I used a mix of a dark background and sharp illumination in the bull fighter in order to isolate him from the surroundings, in order to appreciate the perfect harmony between the man and the bull fighter.
The images of this collection are printed in Metallic Paper with a 14 color printer and mounted in PlexiMount with Dibond and framing grade aluminum
bars.
