PIONEER COURTHOUSE SQUARE HOLIDAY SONGBOOK DEAR FRIENDS, NEIGHBORS AND SUPPORTERS OF PIONEER COURTHOUSE SQUARE, We are delighted to welcome you tonight to the heart of downtown Portland for the 30th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, held every year the day after Thanksgiving. Each year our Portland community gathers with friends and family in Portland’s Living Room for this official kick-off of the holiday season. We are thankful to the thousands of partners, donors and citizens who make this evening possible and whose support of the Square make it one of Portland’s most successful and celebrated community treasures. Tonight’s performance and sing-a-long features members of “Oregon’s Own” 234th Army Band of the Oregon National Guard under the direction of Chief Warrant Officer Ashley Alexander, members of Pacific Youth Choir under the direction of Mia Savage Miller, the Northwest Community Gospel Choir under the direction of Gary Hemenway and members of Pink Martini. As we sing together, we hope to unite the Portland community in an evening of celebration, music and winter cheer. We invite you this evening to lift your voices and sing-a-long to the nearly 25 seasonal and joyful songs included in this songbook tonight and throughout the holiday season. With warm wishes this holiday season from Portland’s Living Room to yours, Stephen V. Schneider Thomas M. Glo-ori-a In excelsis de-o Shepherds, why this Jubilee? Why your joyous strains prolong? What the gladsome tidings be Which inspire your heavenly song? Glo-ori-a In excelsis de-o Come to Bethlehem and see Him whose birth the angels sing; Come, adore on bended knee Christ, the Lord, The newborn King Glo-ori-a In excelsis de-o See Him in a manger laid Jesus, Lord of heaven and earth! Mary, Joseph, lend your aid, With us sing our Savior’s birth. Glo-ori-a In excelsis de-o 5 6 7 AWAY IN A MANGER Attributed to Martin Luther Away in a manger, No crib for His bed, The little Lord Jesus Laid down His sweet head; The stars in the heavens Looked down where He lay, The little Lord Jesus Asleep on the hay. The cattle are lowing, The poor Baby wakes, But little Lord Jesus, No crying He makes. I love Thee, Lord Jesus; Look down from the sky And stay by my cradle Till morning is nigh. Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask Thee to stay Close by me forever And love me I pray! Bless all the dear children In Thy tender care, And fit us for Heaven To live with Thee there. Away in a manger, No crib for His bed, The little Lord Jesus Laid down His sweet head; The stars in the heavens Looked down where He lay, The little Lord Jesus Asleep on the hay 8 9 Pioneer Place THE CHRISTMAS SONG Pioneer Place 700 SW Fifth Avenue Portland, Oregon 97204 503-228-5800 700 SW Fifth Avenue Words & music by Mel Tormé & Bob Wells (1944) First recorded by the Nat King Cole Trio in 1946 Portland, Oregon 97204 www.pioneerplace.com Chestnuts roasting on an open fire Jack Frost nipping at your nose Yule-tide carols being sung by a choir And folks dressed up like Eskimos. 503.228.5800 www.pioneerplace.com Everybody knows a turkey And some mistletoe Help to make the season bright Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow Will find it hard to sleep tonight. Nowell Nowell Nowell Nowell! Born is the King of Israel! They looked up and saw a star Shining in the East beyond them far, And to the earth it gave great light, And so it continued both day and night. Nowell Nowell Nowell Nowell! Born is the King of Israel! And by the light of that same star Three wise men came from country far, To seek for a King was their intent And to follow the star Wherever it went. Nowell Nowell Nowell Nowell! Born is the King of Israel! This star drew nigh to the northwest Over Bethlehem it took its rest, And there it did both stop and stay Right over the place where Jesus lay. Nowell Nowell Nowell Nowell! Born is the King of Israel! Then did they know assuredly Within that house the King did lie: One entered in then for to see, And found the Babe in poverty: Nowell Nowell Nowell Nowell! Born is the King of Israel! Then entered in those wise men three Full reverently upon their knee, And offered there in His presence Their gold, and myrrh and frankincense. Nowell Nowell Nowell Nowell! Born is the King of Israel! Then let us all with one accord Sing praises to our heavenly Lord, That hath made heaven And earth of naught And with His blood Mankind hath bought. Nowell Nowell Nowell Nowell! Born is the King of Israel! 20 22 23 Stimson Lumber Co. FROSTY THE SNOWMAN Words & Music by Steve “Jack” Rollins & Steve Nelson (1950) First recorded by Gene Autry & the Cass County Boys 520 SW Yamhill Avenue, Suite 700 Portland, Oregon 97204 (800) 445-9758 www.stimsonlumber.com Frosty the snowman was a jolly happy soul, With a corncob pipe and a button nose And two eyes made out of coal. Frosty the snowman is a fairy tale, they say, He was made of snow but the children Know how he came to life one day. There must have been some magic in that Old silk hat they found. For when they placed it on his head He began to dance around – Oh Frosty the snowman was alive as he could be, And the children say he could laugh and play just the same as you and me. Thumpetty thump thump – thumpety thump thump, Look at Frosty go. Thumpetty thump thump – thumpety thump thump, Over the hills of snow. Frosty the snowman knew the sun was hot that day, So he said, “Let’s run and we’ll have some fun Now before I melt away.” Down to the village with a broomstick in his hand, Running here and there all around the square, saying “Catch me if you can.” He led them down the streets of town Right to the traffic cop. And he only paused a moment when He heard him holler “Stop!” – For Frosty the snow man had to hurry on his way, But he waved goodbye saying “Don’t you cry, I’ll be back again some day.” (chorus) 24 25 22 21 26 27 The Oregonian 1500 SW First Avenue Portland, OR 97201 866-726-0809 wwworegonlive.com 23 28 29 HARK! Still through the cloven skies they come, Love’s banner all unfurled; And still their heavenly music floats Over all the weary world. Above its sad and lowly plains Old echoes plaintive ring, And ever over its Babel sounds The blessed angels sing. Yet with the woes of sin and strife The world has suffered long; Beneath the Angel-strain have rolled Two thousand years of wrong; And man at war with man hears not The love-song which they bring; O! hush the noise, ye men of strife, And hear the Angels sing. O ye, beneath life’s crushing load Whose forms are bending low, Who toil along the climbing way With painful steps and slow; Look now! for glad and golden hours Come swiftly on the wing; O rest beside the weary road And hear the angels sing. For lo! the days are hastening on, By prophets seen of old, When with the ever-circling years Shall come the time foretold, When the new heaven and earth shall own The Prince of Peace their King, And the whole world send back the song Which now the angels sing 42 31 43 JINGLE BELLS Words & music by James Lord Pierpont (1857) first recorded by the Edison Male Quartette in 1898 on an Edison cylinder Jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way, Oh what fun it is to ride In a one-horse open sleigh, o Jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way, Oh what fun it is to ride In a one-horse open sleigh. Dashing through the snow In a one-horse open sleigh O’er the fields we go Laughing all the way. Bells on bob-tail ring Making spirits bright What fun it is to ride and sing A sleighing song tonight. Chorus A day or two ago I thought I’d take a ride And soon Miss Fanny Bright Was seated by my side; The horse was lean and lank Misfortune seemed his lot, We got into a drifted bank And then, we got upsot. Chorus A day or two ago The story I must tell I went out on the snow And on my back I fell; A gent was riding by In a one-horse open sleigh He laughed at me as I there sprawling laid And quickly drove away. Chorus Now the ground is white, Go it while youre young, Take the girls tonight And sing this sleighing song. Just get a bob-tailed bay, Two-forty as his speed, Hitch him to an open sleigh And crack! you’ll take the lead. 44 33 45 JOY TO THE WORLD Words by Isaac Watts (1719) Music by George Friedrich Handel Joy to the world! Long lay the world In sin and error pining, Till He appeared And the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope, The weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks A new and glorious morn. Fall on your knees, O hear the angel voices! O night divine, O night when Christ was born! O night divine, O night, O night divine! Led by the light of Faith Serenely beaming, With glowing hearts By His cradle we stand. So led by light of a star Sweetly gleaming, Here came the wise men From Orient land. The King of Kings lay thus In lowly manger, In all our trials Born to be our Friend! He knows our need, To our weakness no stranger; Behold your King! Before the lowly bend! Behold your King! your King! Before Him bend. Truly He taught us To love one another; His law is love and His gospel is peace. Chains shall He break For the slave is our brother And in His name All oppression shall cease. Sweet hymns of joy in Grateful chorus raise we, Let all within us Praise His holy name! Christ is the Lord, Oh praise His name forever, His pow’r and glory evermore proclaim His pow’r and glory Evermore proclaim. 56 b ˙. & b bbb j œ œ œ œj œ. 4 shi bb & b b b ..
