President’s Message
Welcome to our brand new/ old look to the newsletter of the Manotick Classic Boat Club. After much thought, a decision was
made to return to the original format so we proudly present the June 2010 first edition of The Brass Binnacle. Special thanks to
Dave Tilley for restoring the masthead and for also finding a “brass binnacle” to accompany the header. Frankly, I had no idea
what a brass binnacle was and can now boast that it is a device to hold a ship's compass in place. How fitting that our newsletter is
taking us in the right direction to upcoming events, news and other boat related topics.
In this edition, you will find articles on some of our well-attended Social events of the last few months. We also feature
information on boat auctions and sales. For a list of boat shows that are taking place this Summer, please see the ACBS Rudder
for a detailed agenda. Plan trips around the Thousand Island show, A.C.B.S. at Clayton, N.Y. and the Toronto show in Muskoka,
ON. This is a great way to see old friends and make new ones.
Our boat show is rapidly approaching. This year we are excited to host our 35th Ottawa International Antique and Classic Boat
Show at Long Island Locks, Manotick, ON. Mark the dates of Friday, August 6 for a Welcome Reception and then Saturday,
August 7, 2010, for the main event. Your registration packages are in the mail. Thank you to John and Susan Richardson for all
their work putting together and assembling the packages. Please return your completed forms early. We are planning a Birthday
Bash with prizes throughout the day and special treats at our delicious dinner at the Manotick Legion. Your committee is
working hard to make this event one of the highlights of your Summer. We look forward to seeing you there.
Cruise nights are rolling right along. Join us by boat or by car on Wednesday evenings along the Rideau. More information on
these informal events follows.
We welcome your comments and suggestions. Happy boating and stay safe.
Dinah Scholfield, President.
Note from Communications and Newsletter Editor
Once again, thank you to the contributors of this Newsletter, particularly Don Segall for his pictures and coverage of the Spring
Shop Tour and photographers David Brisco and Dinah Scholfield for pictures of the Cruise Nights.
Thank you especially to Dave Tilley for putting the Newsletter together.
We continue to encourage your submissions of manuscripts, articles and photographs or requests/suggestions of topics of
interest to the membership. Particularly, as we are celebrating our 35th Anniversary this year we are looking for pictures and
stories of those early years and boat shows to include in our September Newsletter.
A card sized advertisement is available in the Newsletter for Manotick Classic Boat Club members at $25 per issue. ($50 for
non-members) a quarter page advertisement is available for $100 per issue. Advertisements for boats and boating parts is
available free of charge for the benefit of our members in our Marketplace section
Please submit to Judy Saunders, Communications Chair at: [email protected] or Jean Beveridge, Newsletter Editor at
[email protected]
Thank You
The Manotick Classic Boat Club would like to thank
Sheldon Beveridge for his beautiful job adding a new base
to the Best Canadian Boat award. This award was created
by Ross Therrien and features an exquisite carving of a
loon. Many wonderful Canadian boats have won this
prestigous award. You can see it, along with all the rest of
our permanent trophies, in the second floor display case at
Watson's Mill in Manotick, Ontario.

2010 MCBC Shop Tour
By Don Segall
th
April 17 was a rainy, wet, cool day in the region, which meant the annual shop tour was a most welcome diversion for our
group of enthusiasts. Let me begin by extending the gratitude of our club and the participants to those who opened their
doors to us this Saturday. Additional thanks to Stephen Fox for adding his marvellous facility to the list of sites which we
were able to access.
Quite frankly, the weather was fit for neither man nor beast this day. Testament to this fact is the photo below we captured
of an animal seeking refuge from the conditions, thanks to a Chris Craft Aquahome which just happened to be nearby.
Despite these conditions, it was good to see such a positive turnout for our event. Over the years this activity has
proven to be a successful kick-off for each new season and a good excuse to draw our members together to official end
the dark days of winter. The refreshments provided by many of our hosts were also greatly appreciated as we took
shelter at each stop along our route. Thanks again for your hospitality.

Spring Social
Twenty members of the Manotick Classic Boat Club ventured forth on a cool and rainy April evening to the Marlborough
Pub in North Gower. Social chair Heather welcomed all the “Busy Bees” who took time out from readying boats for spring
launch to socialize and partake of the fare at this rustic pub.
Door prize winners were Rich Vickers, Jack Hughes and Marion Beaudry but everyone went home with a “Busy Bee” to
plant in the garden or to possibly decorate a boat???
MCBC at Manotick’s Dickinson Days
MCBC was represented at Dickinson Days by Ray and Judy Saunders. The display featured ----“Florence”, the Jelleys' 1917
disappearing propeller boat (“Dippy”) renowned for its ability to navigate shallow waters and its slow speed---and drew
attention to the advertising poster designed by Dave Tilley to remind people of our upcoming boat show.
Many visitors wanted to confirm when the boat show is, some just admired the simplicity of old engines and boats while
others had specific questions about restoring or selling an old boat on their property. It was a great opportunity for us to not
only advertise the boat show, but our club as well. Who knows - we may gain a new member or two.

First Cruise Night 2010
By Jean Beveridge
th.
The weather could not have been more cooperative for the first Cruise Night of the season on May 19 Sunny
skies, and a balmy 21 degrees made for a most enjoyable gathering on the Scholfields' patio. Most of the group
arrived by road (most boats getting last minute touch ups before launching) but thanks to Skipper Dave Tilley
with Crewman Ian Wyllie, the evening was authenticated by their arrival in the lovely “One of 3” his 1968
Wykes runabout.
Good conversation, tasty treats, and beverages were shared by all. Special entertainment was provided by the
marine unit of the fire department, practicing water rescues.

Cruise Nights 2010
Cruise Nights are scheduled every Wednesday evening, from May to September. They are a unique feature of the
Manotick Classic Boat Club. They are an opportunity to cruise with your fellow antique boaters (or is that antique boat
enthusiasts) on the beautiful Rideau River, tie up at a hosting members dock and socialize by the water. In addition to
sharing boating stories, one can also get tips on boat restoration, ask advice, source parts and more. The conversation is not
always about boats, one overheard discussion at a recent Cruise Night concerned the pros and cons of 'spray tanning' and it
wasn't for a boat!!!
Please join your fellow members for an enjoyable evening. Bring your preferred beverage and a small snack to share.
Docking is available, rafting if necessary, many hands will be ready to assist. You are also very welcome by land.
The following pictures were taken at the Jelleys', Macleod-Abramova's, and Scholfields' on recent Cruise Nights. Please
revisit the schedule on the following page and plan to come.
8
2010 Cruise Night Schedule
Here is your schedule for the Cruise Nights of 2010. The usual time of
arrival is 7:00PM. Bring your own liquid refreshments and a snack to
share. You are welcome by water or by land. You are also welcome to
bring a guest or two especially if they are interested in old boats and
possibly joining the club. We are rarely rained out, except in the event of
'thunder and lightening', in which case we recommend travelling by car.

Coming Events
The organizers of the Deseronto Waterfront Festival have
contacted the Manotick Classic Boat Club in that one of the
attractions the festival committee is hoping to organize for
participants is an opportunity to participate in various
boating activities and displays during the festival. They
have asked that our members consider attending our festival
rd
on the afternoon of July 3 and display their classic/antique
boats to the public and possibly offer charter tours to
participants (the display is really the desired option – public
tours was just a thought).
Those who are interested in participating should contact
Dana Valentyne by email at [email protected] or by
phone at 613-396-2440 mon-fri 8:30-4:30 or 613-354-8135
after 4:30pm. The festival committee greatly appreciates
your consideration of this request.
