Chair’s Report
memories made
Clayton Barry, Board Chair
It is hard to believe my second year as Board Chair with Habitat for Humanity Saskatoon is
coming to an end, as is my time with the Board of Directors. My time with Habitat has been
extremely satisfying and had exceeded all expectations. I have had the benefit of meeting,
and learning from, many new people from all walks of life. It has been a pleasure to unite
with these people towards achieving the common goal of quality affordable housing for local
families.
As I reflect, it is clear to me that my favorite part of this organization is the many stories
that make up the Habitat culture and which make peoples’ experiences and interactions
with Habitat unforgettable. There are stories about our volunteers (local, national, and
international), stories about our donors and their remarkable generosity, stories about our staff
and their unwavering commitment to Habitat, and, of course, stories about the families that
Habitat serves and which motivate our entire organization to keep working to get better and
stronger in an effort to serve even more families.
Some of the most important work that we as Habitat members can do is to tell our stories and
to motivate others by sharing Habitat’s stories. The best way to ensure the long-term health
and viability of our organization is to tell our stories, and to connect with other members of
our community who will be inspired to become involved with, and contribute to, Habitat once
they experience the infectious nature of the spirit that is Habitat for Humanity.
This year Habitat for Humanity Saskatoon had the pleasure and privilege of being a part of the
story of 6 families who purchased houses from Habitat. This past year Habitat for Humanity
Saskatoon provided affordable housing to a total of 25 men, women, and children and became a
part of their individual stories and collective family stories. This is very exciting and extremely
humbling to be a part of.
One of the most memorable days in my term as Chair was the key turning ceremony for
the four homes located on Avenue S. The key turning ceremony occurred on a typical
Saskatchewan winter day, which meant that the 50, or so, people who attended needed to
comfortably “cram” themselves into the living room, together with all of the usual media and
apparatus that accompanies a key turning ceremony. The room was filled with the families and
their friends, government representatives, corporate sponsors, volunteers, Habitat staff, Board
Members, and vibrant energy.
Two of the groups in the room stood out for me on this particular day. First, was the group
of high school students from Walter W. Brown High School in Langham, and their teacher,
Graydon Stebanuk. These students worked on the home on site in Langham as part of their
regular school curriculum. Without their work and dedication to the project it would not have
been possible. I will never forget watching them experience first-hand what the build
meant to Saida Sultana and Mohammed Uddin and their family who would be living,
30
Chair’s Report
and raising their children, in the home. I can think of no better educational exercise than to develop
construction skills while contributing to the community and the quality of life of a well deserving
family.
I also noticed Mr. Stebanuk as he watched the family receive the key and his students getting
recognized for their work. This was a man filled with pride. He appeared to me to be proud of his
students, proud of the work product, and proud that they achieved their goal.
Second, was the group of nursing students from the Nursing Students Association with Saskatchewan
Polytechnic. Habitat for Humanity Saskatoon’s relationship with the nursing students is new, and
the support, energy and positivity that they have brought to our organization has been absolutely
fantastic. Apart from working on the builds, they have held two fundraisers over the course of the
past year and have donated well in excess of $10,000. They have contributed in every possible way to
our organization.
The profession of nursing has a long history of caring for people and making our communities
healthy. What better way to provide care than by playing a role in ensuring families have adequate
(and in the case of Habitat for Humanity – excellent) and affordable housing. Research shows that
Habitat families are healthier, that their kids do better in school, and that they are overall happier as
a result of home ownership.
On behalf of the Board, I would like to express a special thanks to the students at Walter W. Brown
High School and to the Nursing Students and faculty that assisted us with the Avenue S Build.
Habitat for Humanity Saskatoon has more work to do and more stories to live out and to tell. The
next chapter will start with the construction this spring of our two-phase condominium development
located on Slimmon Road in the Rosewood Neighbourhood. The Board, and staff, have been
working hard planning and preparing for this exciting new project, which will ultimately serve 12
families.
To all of our volunteers and sponsors this part year I would like to extend a great big thank you on
behalf of the Board and our entire organization. We cannot say thank you enough for what you do
for Habitat and what you mean for us. Our work would not be possible without your contributions.
I would also like our volunteers and sponsors to know that our staff and our Board takes your
contributions seriously and that our Board and our staff is always working to find new ways to
maximize the time, energy and money provided by our volunteers and sponsors. Please feel free to
contact our Board Members at any time to discuss anything pertaining to our organization for it is
only through dialogue amongst our members that Habitat will become stronger and better and more
able to serve families.
Although there are always ways to improve, after being a part of Habitat for Humanity for 7 years I
have tremendous faith in the efficacy of our organization. At the national, provincial, and local level,
Habitat for Humanity is comprised of hundreds of passionate and caring people who are dedicated
to expressing their passion for housing and humanity on a daily basis. This is what makes our
organization strong and why we are one of the best charities in the world.

Chief Executive Officer’s Report
together we are able
Barb Cox-Lloyd, CEO
Thank you to the wonderful staff, board, volunteers and partners that make up the Habitat for
Humanity Saskatoon family. As Habitat Saskatoon grows, so does the commitment from all of
those who help make this a wonderful organization. From the staff that come every day with
a drive to make us better, to the Board of Directors that provide a dedicated leadership, to the
volunteers and partner families who ensure that we can move forward in our ambitious build
program. Thanks to everyone for your hard work and support.
A special thanks to our partners who have made building homes for working low income families
a reality in 2015. We were able to complete our semidetached homes on Avenue J and the
fourplex on Avenue S. The students at WW Brown School in Langham built the modules for the
fourplex which were moved on site in February. Four families received their keys so they could
move in before the end of the year. Without these supporters, we would be unable to do our
work. Thank you to all of our community partners who assisted with volunteer time, funds and
materials for the builds.
The City of Saskatoon also contributed a 10% grant reflecting the cost of construction once the
builds were completed. Without these partnerships Habitat Saskatoon would not be able to grow
and increase our number of homes for families.
We also started a build outside of Saskatoon. The Battlefords Chapter came together and began
building a duplex for two families in North Battleford. The commitment shown by the steering
committee, the working committees, the donors, and all the volunteers will these two families
realize their dream of home ownership.
The ReStore had another terrific year with revenues greater than $800,000. Thanks to the staff
and volunteers, the ReStore has grown and succeeded in providing increasing revenues. Revenue
from the ReStore funds the administration costs of Habitat for Humanity and helps build homes,
so that 100% of our donations can be used for building homes. Thank you to everyone who
has donated materials for sale at the ReStore. We very much appreciate our partnerships with
individuals and businesses in the community. Also, thank you to our customers who are a great
support without whom we would have fewer resources to build homes for Habitat families.
A special thanks to our partner families who are the reason we are here. Your 500 hour sweat
equity provides a portion of our volunteer workforce, helps us get to know you, and gives you
a better idea what goes into building a home. We enjoy our partnership and hope that you
continue to enjoy your home during the building and for many years thereafter.
We couldn’t do the work we do without the commitment of the many volunteers who work
on our build sites, in the ReStore and with our office. These volunteers are the workforce that
ensures that we can provide affordable homes to our partner families. Thank you to all these
volunteers; some who spend 4 hours and others who spend 1,000 hours with us. We really could
not do this without you.
Finally, a big thank you to the community for helping make 2015 a great year for Habitat for
Humanity Saskatoon. Our purpose is to build community and through your efforts and those of
our partners we will have greater successes each year.

ReStore Report
fresh beginnings
Jessica Kyle, ReStore General Manager
What an exciting year it was!! With a slow start to the year we were able to kick things into high
gear and finish strong at $830,262.00!!! Only $20,000 under budget but almost $70,000 over last
year. WHOOHOO!!
We started the year off with a complete renovation, which has made it easier for our customers
to find exactly what they are looking for. As well as made things easier for our volunteers to
assist in stocking shelves, as now they are actually clean and organized! We also started a ReStore
Committee. ( Board members Cody and Bruce, as well Mark from All Weather Windows). It has
been amazing to have a devoted group of people to bounce ideas off, of as well as, help in the future
planning of the ReStore!
We continue to benefit from our partnership with the Urban Camp program, as well as helping
individuals with barriers get back into the work force through Partners With Employment, the
Lighthouse, and the English program through Siast. In 2015 we had 111 volunteers who did 934.5
volunteer hours! Many of who were return volunteers.
We also welcomed a few more corporate donators to our list! A huge Thank You goes out to our
full time Procurement Manager, Brenda Polley for the amazing job she has done bringing in these
donations and keeping the ReStore full!!
Seeing what amazing team work and excellent customer service we do, we expect nothing short of
an EXCEPTIONAL year in 2016!!

Build Report
partnership and planning
Marta Lieb, Project Manager
2015 has been a flourishing year and we can proudly say that we have finished 6 units. Changes
were made in the construction and administration department which have made us stronger.
The Ave J project was completed at the beginning of the year. One of these is an accessible unit
thanks to our donors , dedicated workers and volunteers. This unit was designed to suit the unique
needs of the family who lives there.
Ave S is an ready-to-move four-plex built with the help of the high school students in Langham.
These units were placed on ICF basements constructed at the site. Thanks to Neufeld movers the
RTM was moved and put in place in early February 2015. The project was completed and final
inspected in fall of 2015.
Langham High School started a new RTM duplex that will be moved to Ave W South, This move is
planned for next winter.
Slimmon road is starting on spring of 2016. Development of the site projected for spring. Thanks for
HAMM construction for their generous donation the site will be serviced before construction starts
in spring
There was no building over the winter this year. This break in construction allowed our team to plan
and regroup for spring.

Volunteer Report
leadership from within
Shannon Durand, Director of Volunteer & Family Services
Thank you to all of the volunteers who joined us on the build sites, in the ReStore and at special
events. This year we welcomed over 360 new volunteers on to our sites and in our ReStore compared
to 230 in 2014.
On the build site 310 volunteers put in over 2300 hours in order to build homes for families right
here in Saskatoon. Thank you to all of our staff who welcome and teach our volunteers onsite. In
2014 we introduced a Crew Leader Program; we have 6 amazing volunteers, in that program Norm
McDougall, Dale Rawluk, Darrell Eakett, Leonard Bernns, Larry Rempel, Rodney Muzyka, and
Robin San Juan. Crew leaders are volunteers with the experience to help other volunteers as well
as help with Group builds. We still have a lot of work to do with the program, but we are looking
forward to expanding it and making it even better in 2015. Thank you to all the volunteers!
The ReStore management and staff have done a great job to make the ReStore a great place to
volunteer. In 2015, the Restore welcomed 111 volunteers who put in over 944 hours. Thank you to
all of the staff and volunteers for making the ReStore such a great success!
We had 31 different groups join us for a total of 53 days of group builds. Superior Cabinets, Graham
Construction, Con Tech, LaFarge and Home Depot all came out this year to lend us their expertise.
Several companies and organizations joined us as well including RBC, Delta Bessborough, Pepsi
Co. and many more. We also partnered with many teaching programs including The Prairie Spirit
School Division, HCAP, The University of Saskatchewan, Partners in Employment, The Saskatoon
Open Door Society, The Saskatchewan Intercultural Association, SIAST, The Canadian Mental
Health Association, the University of Regina Nursing program, as well as their Social work program.
EBSS and JDC West did a great deal of work this year not only on our job sites but in fundraising,
special events, and helping us with our Gala on the prize committee.
We have several volunteers that work behind the scenes that do an amazing job. We would like
to thank the Board of Directors, as well as the many committee members that work very hard to
ensure that Habitat for Humanity Saskatoon is successful.
Thank you to everyone who volunteers and supports Habitat for Humanity Saskatoon!

Resource Development Report
building stability
Mark Soloway, Resource Development
The fund raising focus in 2015 was to build up a funding base of foundations, corporate partners
and granting organizations. This would allow for more consistent fund raising revenues to be
generated in the near and long term. This approach started with seeking out granting organizations
that Habitat Saskatoon could tap into. One of the first groups to receive an application was
the Newman’s Own Foundation; suggested by Federated Co-op, a long time partner of Habitat
Saskatoon. The Newman’s Own Foundation provided a grant of $10,000 to use for general
operations and the building of Avenue S South.
Shortly after the Newman’s Own grant was approved, we hosted the 5th Annual Tombola at the
Bess. The Tombola at the Bess is Habitat’s largest fundraising event, in 2015 it generated about
$50,000 in revenue. Hundreds of people attended the Gala, which had awesome prizes that could
be won and incredible food provided by the Bessborough’s amazing culinary team. The funds raised
from the Gala 2015 were used to continue the building of Avenue S South and to further the builds
on Avenue W South and the Slimmon Road Project.
To further expand Habitat Saskatoon’s ability to reach out to foundations, it was decided that
specialized software could be utilized to assist in the task. Grant Advance, a database and interface
of Canadian foundations, public trusts and granting organizations has given Habitat Saskatoon
the powerful ability to contact Foundations, that we would not have been able to develop a
relationships with.
Edward’s Business Student Society selected Habitat Saskatoon as their Charity of Choice for 2015.
This generated a lot of interest in the organization as hundreds of people, who had never really
worked with us in the past, got to hear about Habitat Saskatoon and everything we do. The group
volunteered on our build site and in the ReStore. Throughout the year they held 3rd party fund
raising events. To date over $15,000 has been generated by their hard work.
Another partnership was developed in 2015, which provided huge benefits for Habitat Saskatoon
and generated resources for our builds. Nursing students in the Collaborative Nursing Program
from Sask Poly Tech and University of Regina partnered with Habitat for their Community
Health Practicum. They planned and executed the Grassroots Gala - A Casual Gala for the Whole
Family. This Gala was able to raise over $6,000 dollars for Habitat Saskatoon, while providing the
nursing students with a unique perspective on the workings of a charity, fund development and the
Riverdale and Pleasant Hill communities.
From working with new partners to developing a system which will allow for a much more robust
granting processes and foundation funding requests, 2015 has been a growth year for Fund
Development. 2016 is slated to grow even more with full time staff activities working to increase
revenue, build relationships and find ever more areas to expand fund development.
