Editor’s Note
Dear Friends,
It’s Summer! Although I love all the seasons of the year, I do enjoy summertime,
especially in Garrett County. Our little mountain enclave comes alive with theater performances, renowned orchestral concerts, festivals, and an abundance
of live music. There are so many options to celebrate not only Independence
Day, but every day of the summer. Check out our Calendar of Events and Live
Music Directory for information. Some of the funner events this month include
the Garrett County Artists Studio Tour, the Dog-Gone Fund-raiser and, my favorite, Chautauqua. Don’t miss our feature story on the Deep Creek Lake Lions
Club and their revival of a Deep Creek classic...the boat parade!
This month, we’ve also featured some of our most established businesses and
friends. Check out the Spotlight story on Funland Arcade, celebrating their 45th
summer bringing smiles to their customers. We also feature Clutter Realty, specializing in Alpine Lake Resort real estate and rentals since 1974, and FunTime
WaterSports, renting Jet Ski’s and Pontoon Boats to help you make the most of
your time on the water.
Whether a long term local, or day-tripper to the area, we hope you find all the
information you need in the pages of our magazine. Thanks for reading!

Deep Creek Lake Lions Club
Leaders in Community Service
For almost 100 years, Lions Club International has been a leading force in
uniting people and resources to help fight eye related illnesses and provide
community leadership. Founded in 1917, members of the Lions Club have
traditionally looked for service projects to help those with impaired sight. In
1925 Helen Keller spoke at the annual Lions Club convention and challenged the
members to become “Knights of the Blind” and to make lives of the blind more
worthwhile everywhere.
The Deep Creek Lake
Lions Club not only
follows in this tradition
but has created a few of
their own. For the past 30
years, The Deep Creek
Lake Lions Club has help
ed to set forth the national
mandate by utilizing one
of Garrett County’s most
unique resources -- Wisp
Ski Resort. For a few
weeks each winter, the

from the Maryland School
for the Blind to the Deep
Creek Lake area to enjoy activities that most of us take for granted.
These students ski at Wisp with the assistance of special equipment and local
high school and adult volunteers. They also enjoy hearty breakfasts prepared
by the Lions Club and pizza dinners where they trade stories from the slopes.
But the fun doesn’t end there. During the summer the club brings them back
to the area for a few nights of camping at Deep Creek Lake State Park, where
they spend time enjoying all our area has to offer. Lions Club members work
with local attractions to provide fun experiences to these students. Locally, they
assist vision-impaired citizens with eyeglasses and doctor’s bills.
Of course, these programs need to be funded, and the Lions Club has a variety
of fund-raising activities they hold each year. One of the most popular was the
revival of the annual Deep Creek Lake Boat Parade. Scheduled for Saturday,
July 2nd, this fourth annual event will begin from the Deep Creek Marina

Lakeside Club in McHenry and end at Dutch’s at Silver Tree. Registration will
start around 6 PM and the parade will get underway around 7 PM with vintage
(wooden hulled) boats in the first wave and decorated / lit boats in the second.
They will proceed in single file past a number of judging stations located along
the route. Prizes
will be awarded
for the boats that
raise the most cash
donations and will
include customdesigned Winner’s
Pennant and
trophies. Entries
in the parade must
pay a minimum $25
registration fee and
entries are limited.
Participants can get sponsors for the boat to help raise funds. Businesses are
welcome to join as well for a $100 entry fee for a boat with advertising.
The boat parade is a revival of an event that used to be popular on the lake
in the 1960’s and 1970s. It has been well received and organizers are thrilled
to have it back as an annual lake event.
In August, the club will be hosting their 2nd annual Poker cruise. You start
your hand at the Boardwalk, then proceed to each of the next lakeside businesses
(by boat or by car) to get your next card. At the end point of Dutch’s Silver Tree,
everyone will play what they’ve been dealt and the best hand wins the prize
package. A “Go Fish” tournament will be available for kids along the route,
too! Your $50 registration fee gets you in along with a t-shirt and goody bag.
Other upcoming events benefitting the club include Guest Bartending night
at the Sand Trap lounge at the Oakland Golf Course where members of the
local club will serve your drinks. The third annual “Bark in the Park” 5K race
will take place on Saturday, September 24th at 8 AM. This fund-raiser benefits
the Lions Club Off-Leash Dog Park on Bumble Bee Road.
All proceeds from these two events go to fund the blind-skiing program and
other programs of work. The Deep Creek Lake Lions Club meets on the 2nd
and 4th Tuesdays of each month on the lower level of Uno’s from 6 to 8 PM.
Visitors are always welcome. For more information on any of these events or
more about the club, contact Chris Nichols at 301-616-7881 or via email at

Skip Around Town
...by Skip “Ol’ Two-Stents” Carr
I’m writing this about a week before
Caitlin and Scott’s wedding. You are
reading this after the wedding. So, on
some level, due to modern technology, you will know how the wedding
turned out before I do...feel relieved
and comfortable with yourself if you
don’t understand what I just said.

With a traditional Irish name like
Caitlin, you should have a last name

I had a chat with Jodi Refosco of

Clutter Realty
As our world becomes more connected, we often find ourselves longing for
a place to just unwind and get away from it all. Just such a place exists -- nearby
Alpine Lake, located just 20 minutes from Deep Creek Lake in Terra Alta, West
Virginia.
Located in the mountains of West Virginia, Alpine Lake is a full service resort
area with amenities including a restaurant, indoor pool, bar, exercise room, a proshop, 148 acre lake, private beach and boathouse. With these many conveniences,
you’ll never get bored here. Alpine Lake also boasts an 18-hole golf course, tennis
courts, mini golf, fishing, a
playground area for kids,
and over 30 miles of nearly
traffic-free road for walking
or biking. If you decide to
stay during winter months,
you can cross-country ski
here as well.
And nobody knows
Alpine Lake real estate like
the folks at Clutter Realty,
a full service real estate
firm specializing in Alpine
Lake sales and rentals. Tom
Skylar Freeman, Dave & Robin Clutter
Clutter first started selling
real estate in 1974. He was
joined by his son Dave in 1979 and daughter-in-law Robin in 1998. Although Tom
passed away last summer, his legacy of hard work and customer satisfaction lives
on. You’ll even find Tom’s granddaughter Skylar Freeman working the desks on
weekends during the summer.
Alpine Lake Resort continues to grow as a destination. Some renovation work
has been done on the pool which is now re-opened and they are in the process of
building a miniature golf course. Their annual Summer Music Festival, slated for
July 9th, brings in people from all around the region to enjoy good music and the
beautiful ambience of Alpine Lake.
According to owner/broker Dave Clutter, Alpine Lake is also a great place to
buy a second home or full-time residence. “If you need a place to unwind and
recharge, this is it. Regulations are in place restricting gasoline operated motor
boats on the lake, no hunting is permitted, and you can feel safe with 24-hour
security.” He adds, “Only street legal vehicles are allowed on the roads, only
electric motors, canoes, rowboats and sailboats up to 17’ long are allowed on the
lake, which creates an atmosphere of quiet and tranquility.”

Clutter Realty offers several homes for sale listed at under $100,000 and a
very nice selection of homes up to $299,900. “We attract clients here from the
metro area,” says Dave. “Many may have priced properties at other resort areas
and found that those places were
too overgrown for their interests or
were out of their price range.”
In addition to home sales,
Clutter Realty also offers a nice
selection of rental homes for groups
of all types and sizes. You can
plan a weekend getaway or a
weeklong retreat in one of twentytwo vacation rentals, starting at
just $100 a night or $550 a week
for a home that sleeps six. Robin,

Salesperson, Property Management
to Alpine Lake Resort in nearby Terra Alta, WV
and Rental coordinator, explains,
“Homes are simply amazing for
what you get here. Use of the lake and hotel facilities are included in the rental
fee. Our larger homes are perfect for groups. We get a lot of knitters and scrapbookers that just like to get together for the weekend.”
48 -The Lake-FrontTM - July, 2016
Clutter Realty can also work with
larger groups to rent several nearby
homes for weddings, family reunions
or golf outings. It’s also a great place to
stay to enjoy some of the area’s festivals
including the Buckwheat Festival in
Preston County, WV or Autumn Glory
Festivals in Oakland, MD. “We are a
family owned business and we really do
try to treat people the way that we would
want to be treated,” says Robin. “We’ve
definitely grown as a business but still
meet the individual needs of our clients.”

FunTime Watersports
Featuring Top Notch Water Sport Experiences
Summer at Deep Creek often means one thing – enjoying the beautiful, clean
waters of Deep Creek Lake. FunTime Watersports offers a variety of ways for
families to do that…with rentals of personal watercraft, pontoons, boat sales and
service, along with Lake Tours to discover more of what our area has to offer.
Owner Bill Meagher opened FunTime in the summer of 2012 to fill a need
he saw in the community. He started just renting personal watercraft (Jet Skis)
but with the addition of sales and service, has slowly expanded to become a full
service marina.
When Bill
decided to offer
pontoon rentals
as an option for
customers, he did
a lot of research.
He purchased some
Godfrey Sweetwater
Pontoons, the
number one
manufacturer of
pontoon boats, to
offer for Lake Tours
and client rental.

them to become
their area representative. He now offers a full line of Godfrey Boats, including
Sweetwater, Aqua Patio and SanPan pontoon boats for sale.
Godfrey has been manufacturing boats for over 50 years. “What I love about
these boats is that even after 3,000 hours of use, they still look amazing. They
are so well built and rock solid…they offer a high level of customer satisfaction.
We are so excited to offer this service to our customers, to give them even more
choices for boat sales and rentals,” explains Bill.

In The Spotlight
Funland Family Fun Center
One of the most popular destinations for area locals and visitors for the past
45 years has always been Funland Family Fun Center. Operated by locals Tom
and Sarah Kuhn, along with their
nephew Doug Knotts, Funland has
been a long time favorite for people
of all ages. The three are proud to be
celebrating their 45th year as one of
the longest continuing businesses at
the lake. and to have served as that
all important “first job” for many of
Garrett County’s youth.
In the 1960’s, the state of
Maryland decided they needed
a better road for Rt. 219 than the
one that traveled along the lake
(now called Deep Creek Drive), so
they built a new road from the Rt.
From Left to Right: Tom & Sara Kuhn,

McHenry.
Tom Kuhn had always dreamed of owning his own business and thought that
somewhere along this new road might be the perfect location. Being a Physical
Education & Recreation Major from WVU, he felt that a mini golf family center would
be a good attraction for the burgeoning lake
area. He and his wife Sara found the perfect
four acre parcel of land on the east side of the
new Route 219 and in 1971 started Funland
Arcade. Their first amusements were a GoKart track and an open air arcade building
with a mini golf course added the following
year. For twenty years, the Kuhn’s operated
Funland as a summer business, with no
indoor restrooms or air conditioning, but as
the lake grew so did their business.
In 1992 with the expansion of the lake
sewer system, the Kuhns decided to tear
down the old arcade building and replace it
with a larger one that would include pizza
sales and ice cream. The new enclosed
building would also house indoor bathrooms

the comfort of their guests and
to expand their season.
In 1994 Tom and Sara added
bumper cars and a climbing
wall. The old mini golf course
was removed to make room for
a more modern one with water
falls, streams, lakes and a cave
highlighting some of Garrett
County’s natural beauty as well
as Deep Creek Lake history.
Today Funland is the second
longest continually owned
business at the Lake. Current
attractions also include Water

as well as their popular minigolf course. Young and old alike enjoy the large arcade which features a variety of

of that “first job”. As a consequence, he and Sara have hired many local high school

offer hours of fun for the entire family.
Tom, Sara and Doug are
always working to provide fun and that “something new”. Every year, they add the
newest and most exciting arcade games for their customers. Deep Creek Pizza also
operates onsite serving delicious pizzas, sandwiches, and ice cream. Last summer,
Glazed and Confuzed Donuts opened a coffee shop, food truck and bakery on
site at Funland, serving delicious fruit smoothies and warm, fresh donuts. Open
seasonally from 8 AM to Noon, it’s a perfect “pick me up” for a summer morning.
This combination of food and fun makes Funland a popular place for birthday and
other community parties. Remember, there is no admission charge and day passes
are available.
Says Sara, “We promote a family friendly atmosphere. We want you to be glad
you’re here and hope you leave with a good feeling so that you’ll want to come back
again.” Tom, Sara and Doug are proud of their employees and the good, friendly
service they provide. “We work hard to keep what we have,” says Sara. “We do try to
maintain each season and spruce up
so everything looks fresh and new.”
For great family fun and friendly
service, be sure to visit Funland
today. Located in their original
location at 24450 Garrett Highway

daily at 10 AM during the summer

Artistically Speaking
Pop-Up Gallery Shop in McHenry
Submitted by the Garrett County Arts Council
Garrett County Arts Council has opened another Pop-Up Gallery Shop. After the
success of two temporary holiday pop-up galleries in late 2015, the new McHenry pop-up
will be a continuation of GCAC’s commitment to both local visual artists and the public.
A pop-up shop, or in this case a pop-up art gallery, is a retail space that only remains
in operation for a few days to a few months. As the board of directors of GCAC works
though strategic planning and evaluates the future permanent home for The Gallery Shop,
the pop-up location allows regional artists to continue to have their artwork available for
sale to the public. The Arts Council supports the large artist community of Garrett County
and the surrounding areas by providing the space and the staffing for the retail storefront.
The Pop-up Shop features one-of-a-kind, handcrafted gifts and works of art. Items
available include jewelry, apparel, accessories, paintings (watercolor, oil, acrylic, & mixed
media, both originals and prints), photography, glass, basketry, woodworking, furniture,
and much more.
The Pop-Up Gallery Shop is located at 25227 Garrett Highway, McHenry, next to
Archie’s Barbeque and will be open every day from now through Labor Day. Monday
through Saturday hours are 10:00 am - 6:00 pm. Sunday hours are 11:00am - 4:00pm.
The shop will remain open throughout the fall and Christmas holiday season with projected
closing date of December 31, 2016. Fall and winter hours will be announced. The phone
number is 301-914-1378.
The McHenry Pop-Up location is made possible by a generous donation of the building
space from Stuck Enterprises of Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. Stuck Enterprises is the parent
company of Jacobs Petroleum and Oakland Oil & Propane.
In addition, the artwork will be displayed on antique furniture on loan from Carriage
House Antiques, located at 257 N. 3rd Street, Oakland.
A retail storefront has been a project of Garrett County Arts Council since 2000. GCAC
has been active with various other programs since 1976. As stated above, the Arts Council
has undertaken an extensive branding and strategic planning process, which will evaluate
all of its programs and projects.
The Council expects to open a
permanent gallery/retail venue
sometime in the future. Until then,
GCAC’s temporary Pop-Up Gallery
Shop will help serve the artists and
the community.
Garrett County Arts Council’s
operations and programs are
supported by an annual grant
administered by the Maryland
State Arts Council. Additional funding is provided through Garrett County government,
membership support, and community contributions. To become a supporting member
of Garrett County Arts Council, contact us at 301-334-6580 or visit our website www.

TELESTROKE AT GARRETT
REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER ED
Garrett Regional Medical Center has applied for stroke certification from the
Joint Commission of hospital accreditation. The certification was developed by
the Joint Commission’s new Disease-Specific Care Advanced Certification Program for Acute Stroke Ready Hospitals. “This distinct certification is not required,
however it is very important to demonstrate to the community the competence
with which care is rendered at Garrett Regional Medical Center,” explained Mark
Boucot, president & CEO.
While strokes are fairly
low volume for the region,
they’re high risk to patients
that suffer a stroke. According to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC), stroke
is the fifth leading cause of
death in the United States
and is the leading cause of
serious long-term disability.
Pictured is Richard Perry, MD, Chief of
Emergency Services at Garrett Regional
Medical Center with Rich Ford, (patient)
consulting with neurology services at WVU
Medicine using telemedicine through MDTV, a
state-wide telemedicine connection.
Stroke certification eligibility requirements include
a dedicated program that
has effective Performance
Improvement monitoring;
care by qualified medical
professional; treatment of patients within 15 minutes; transfer protocols with a
Primary Stroke center for continuation of care and telemedicine consults with a
neurologist. “Every nurse at Garrett Regional Medical Center has received their
stroke certification,” said Kendra Thayer, vice president of patient care services.
“The Hospital meets or exceeds each standard recommended by the Joint Commission to support better outcomes for stroke care.”
An FDA-approved drug is available that can help some patients by reversing
the disability or long term effects of stroke if given within the first 3 hours of onset
of symptoms. The drug, tPA, often called a clot busting drug, can be administered
provided specific diagnostic protocols are met. This drug can improve the patient’s chance for recovery.

What’s Happening Continued
In response to these startling statistics, the Garrett Regional Medical Center’
emergency department has enhanced services by initiating a more comprehensive approach to stroke response using newly acquired telemedicine technology,
called telestroke. “This is the first phase of telemedicine between Garrett Regional
Medical Center and WVU medicine,” explained Mark Boucot, GRMC president
& CEO. “The emergency department has been hardwired and is able to connect
to specialty physicians in a matter of a few minutes.”
In stroke telemedicine, also called telestroke, emergency room physicians
communicate remotely with neurologists to determine diagnosis and treatment
options. Telemedicine allows consulting physicians to speak face to face with patients as well as the emergency clinical staff. Within minutes, the stroke neurologist, along with the emergency department staff, can determine the appropriate
plan of care. WVU neurologists are available, on-call, 24 hours a day to consult
when needed.
“This technology allows real-time dialogue between our physician and the
neurologist at WVU Medicine. The neurologist can view the patient, medical
records and the patient’s CT scan while connected,” explained Jeff Hinebaugh,
RN, director of emergency services. The emergency clinical staff can assist the
neurologist by helping with the patient’s physical exam during the connection.
The neurologist can then make recommendations to the emergency physician for
ongoing care or possible transfer of patient.
“Recognizing the symptoms of stroke quickly and getting the patient to the
Hospital as soon as possible is an important first step,” said Hinebaugh. “Time is
critical when it involves a possible stroke patient.”
F.A.S.T is an acronym used by the American Heart Association to create awareness and quick response when symptoms of stroke occur. Face drooping, numbness or an uneven smile; Arm weakness or numbness; Speech difficulty or slurred
speech; Time to call 9-1-1. When signs of a stroke become evident, acting FAST
is important for a greater chance of survival. “Telestroke allows stroke patients to
seek emergency care close to home and ensures that they will receive rapid, evidence based treatment. Our protocols also ensure fast initial treatment and rapid
transfer when appropriate,” said Boucot.
Additional information about signs and symptoms of stroke can be found online at www.cde.gov/stroke or www.strokeassociation.org.

Chautauqua to feature
Local Talent Performances
Garrett Lakes Arts Festival (GLAF) has been very busy growing and evolving
with Chautauqua Local Talent Performances for 2016.
The Garrett Lakes Arts Festival will sponsor the annual Chautauqua on July
5th, 6th, and 7th. Preceding the historical interpreters at 7:30, some of Garrett
County’s finest local talent will be showcased at 7:00.
Bluegrass and folk music will be performed by the Wally Weeks family. July
5th will be their evening to be the warm up for this year’s Chautauqua Festival.
Wally’s son and daughter, Timothy and Olivia, play a variety of instruments, including upright bass, guitar, mandolin, and fiddle. In the 2015 Maryland State
Fiddle Championships, they each placed third in their divisions.
Southern High School band members and 2016 graduates Anna Callis and Annika Naylor will be singing on July 6th. During high school Anna was a member
of the drum line, and Annika played trumpet. These girls furthered their cultural
arts education participating and having lead roles in several high school plays.
This year’s production of “The Little Mermaid,” in which Annika played the title
role, Ariel and Anna played Sebastian the crab, Ariel’s trusty companion.
Also on July 6th, Scout and Addie Best, ages 17 and 15, and 2016 winners
of 4th place in the state competition for National History Day, will share their
performance. Both girls are homeschooled students who live on a farm in western Pennsylvania. Scout is interested in international studies, and Addie enjoys
history, historical costuming, and art. Their interests in these areas led them to
the National History Day program--a year-long academic competition in which a
half million students from the United States and from a number of international
schools do extensive research on a topic of their choice related to the assigned
theme. Individually or together, the sisters have placed first at the regional or state
levels four times in the five years of their participation, and have twice placed
fifth in the nation. For the 2016 NHD competition, they wrote and acted in a
ten-minute Chautauqua-like performance describing the encounter between photographer Dorothea Lange and Florence Thompson, the subject of her famous
“Migrant Mother” photo. The photograph is the most widely reproduced and
recognized photo in history, but the subject of the photo was unknown and her
story untold until 40 years after the photo was first distributed by the Farm Security
Administration. Both Florence Owen’s life and Dorothea Lange’s photographs
make a compelling story.
On July 7th, Garrett County’s High School FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition (FRC) Team 1629, the
Garrett Coalition (GaCo) will present the history of the team, which just finished

its twelfth season. The team of about 20 students is represented about equally by
Northern and Southern high schools, and is about 40% girls. Since the team’s
rookie year in 2005, it has grown into a leader in STEM education in and about
Garrett County, as well as the FIRST community which consists of 3,500 similar
teams from around the world. FIRST Robotics is about more than robots. In addition to building very competitive robots, Team 1629 has been recognized at the
regional and world levels for its success at inspiring and preparing future engineers
and STEM professionals. Each year Team 1629 builds a new robot to rally behind
as its champion. Meshach 12.0, the robot Team 1629 built to play this season’s
game, will personally tell his story and the history of his team, its achievements,
and the vision Team 1629 hopes to bring to pass.
Chautauqua 2016 marks the 22nd summer Maryland Humanities has brought
this dynamic, free event to Garrett College. In previous years, the Chautauqua
at Garrett College has engaged audiences with exciting presentations by
such famous visitors from yesteryear
as Babe Ruth, Frida Kahlo, Jefferson
Davis, Woody Guthrie, Malcolm X,
Sacagawea, Cesar Chavez, George Orwell, and Clara Barton.
This year’s trio of visitors includes
Duke Ellington on July 5, Gwendolyn
Brooks on July 6, and Ernest Hemingway on July 7. The program each evening is free and starts at 7:00 pm in the
College auditorium with warm up acts
by young performers of Garrett County, followed by the main speaker at
7:30 pm.
“Put it before them briefly so they
will read it, clearly so they will appreciate it, picturesquely so they will remember it, and above all, accurately so
they will be guided by its light.” With these words, American publisher Joseph
Pulitzer articulated a set of standards that have inspired journalists, writers, artists
and musicians in their creative endeavors for over a century. This year, we are
celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Pulitzer Prize as three Pulitzer winners
come to life on the Chautauqua stage. Duke Ellington, the incomparable showman, was one of the greatest composers of the twentieth century with a career that
spanned over fifty years. Gwendolyn Brooks, the first African American to win
a Pulitzer Prize, captured the black experience in America through her poetry.
Ernest Hemingway, one of the greatest American literary figures of the twentieth century, continues to influence modern literature with his trademark style of
simple yet perceptive prose.
