Presidential Inauguration of Dr. Zvi Szafran
Presidential Inauguration
of
Dr. Zvi Szafran
Fourth President of the State University of New York at Canton
April 10, 2015
Dr. Zvi Szafran
Dr. Szafran comes to SUNY Canton after previously serving as
Vice President for Academic Affairs and Professor of Chemistry
at Southern Polytechnic State University in Georgia since
2005. He earned his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University
of South Carolina and his bachelor’s degree in chemistry
from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He served as the Vice
President for Academic Affairs at New England College in New
Hampshire from 1998 to 2005 and held several positions at
Merrimack College in Massachusetts.
SUNY Canton Medallion
This presidential medallion was created through a
collaboration between a student, a staff member,
and the President. The medallion is cast with
the College’s seal on the front; on the back is a
new design representing SUNY Canton’s drive
to always move forward while appreciating
our past. The medallion will be stored in a
specially crafted box with engraved name
plates to recognize each President from this
point forward.
Special recognition is given to Austin Rdzanek,
Graphic and Multimedia Design student; Lorette
Murray, Public Relations Manager; and Dr. Zvi
Szafran, President.
Leaf and Parallelogram
The College emblem consists of a green leaf and blue parallelogram. The leaf
represents life, growth, and sustainability. The parallelogram symbolizes the
symmetry and exactness of technology.
The Mace
The mace is a symbol of dignity and authority that the senior-most faculty member carries
at formal ceremonies, convocations, and commencements.
President Emeritus Earl W. MacArthur inspired the College’s current mace. Professor
Emeritus John G. Boyden and Dale G. Fockler worked with students to design and construct
it in 1981. Area companies, including Alcoa and Corning, donated the materials.
Each portion of the 29-inch tall scepter is symbolic of SUNY Canton. The arch at the
top represents the overriding authority of the College president. The crystal inset bears
the College logo, consisting of a leaf and parallelogram. The chrome studs inset into the
beryllium bowl represent the academic departments of 1981.
It is said that the mace is a mobile time capsule and that students may have inserted
materials into the hollow shaft when it was being assembled. Those contents will only be
revealed if the mace is ever dismantled for service or redesign.
Dr. Nancy Zimpher, Chancellor
In June 2009, Nancy L. Zimpher became the 12th Chancellor
of the State University of New York, the nation’s largest
comprehensive system of higher education. Since that time,
she has been a vocal advocate for groundbreaking legislative
reforms that ensure SUNY can provide broad access to higher
education in an environment of declining state support, while
maximizing its impact as an engine of economic development
throughout the state.
Dr. Zimpher is active in numerous state and national
education organizations and is a leader in the areas of teacher
preparation, urban education, and university-community
engagement. Prior to coming to SUNY, Dr. Zimpher served as President of the
University of Cincinnati, Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and
Executive Dean of the Professional Colleges and Dean of the College of Education at
The Ohio State University.
Dr. Theodore Long
Theodore E. Long served as President of Elizabethtown
College (PA) from 1996 to 2011, and since 2004, has served
as a Trustee of Capital University, where he chairs the
Academic Affairs Committee and leads a task force on
“sustainable excellence.” He has broad experience in the
governance of independent colleges, especially on issues of
effective presidential leadership, board-president relations,
strategic planning, institutional transformation, and the
board’s role in leading change. Since leaving Elizabethtown,
Dr. Long has focused on building effective presidential and
board leadership for transformative change in colleges and
universities. As a Senior Consultant for the Association of Governing Boards, he
has assisted more than 25 college boards with such issues and has also coached
several presidents. He remains active in national initiatives to support engaged
liberal education, promote civic and democratic learning, enhance global education,
foster transformative educational experiences for students, and rethink the higher
education’s business model. Dr. Long holds degrees from the University of Virginia
(Ph.D.), Duke University (M.A.), and Capital University (B.A.), all in sociology.

SUNY Canton all praise to thee
We will ever sing thy dear name
And though we go out from thy care
We’ll be loyal and spread thy fame

SUNY Canton, honor is thine
We’ll always revere thy spirit so fine
SUNY Canton, ever we’ll sing
`Til the world with our echoes ring
Verse 2
We’ve spent many happy days
`Neath the shelter of thy dear walls
We’re preparing for life’s long trails
