The Heart of Catskill Association/Catskill
Chamber of Commerce is a local, not-forprofit corporation. The purpose of this
corporation is to facilitate non-partisan
discussion and action to continue to
revitalize and improve Catskill’s traditional and historic business districts.
Since the social and economic well-being
of our community affects all of us, we do
not believe it should be left in the hands
of government alone. Our goals are to
foster an atmosphere that will encourage
business development and expansion,
and to raise funds for the implementation
of revitalization.

ABOUT OUR ART...
This issue’s cover was created by Enrico Scull while wearing one of his many talented
hats as a graphic and fine artist. In addition to his two dimensional works, Scull is also
well-known around the region for his assemblage art pieces, his hand-made instruments,
and his homey ways with the blues as a popular local folk artist. His work as an
illustrator has included the visual side of the classic Dar Tellum: Stranger from a Distant
Planet.
The inside images are from the new project, Murals of Catskill’s Historical Buildings
is a joint project of the Catskill Central School District, Greene County Council on
the Arts, the Arts in Education Program of the New York State Council on the Arts
(NYSCA) and Ruth Leonard, artist and teacher. Ms. Leonard worked with students of
4th grade teachers, Charles Daly, Matt Luvera, Lara Polcovar, Kimberly Scali, Heather
Schindler and Annie Sirago, with aid from the teachers, to understand, appreciate,
and take pride in the incredible diversity and beauty in Catskill, ultimately creating a
15-section mural of Catskill’s historic buildings. Additional support for the project
came from the Bank of Greene County, Hudson River Bank & Trust Foundation,
Stewart’s Holiday Match, Trustco Bank, and the Windham Chapter of the Catskill
Mountain Foundation. Talk about our town’s myriad talents!

A Town To Face All Challenges...
Catskill’s Future Feels Brighter Than Ever!
I know everyone’s talking these days about the economic challenges we’re
facing, but looking back at some last year, when Catskill found itself named
one of the coolest towns in the country, I can’t help but feel optimistic about
what the future has in store for us. And proud that, as always, ours is a town
with the sort of gumption to keep itself steady during hard times.
Have you checked out the new Buy In Greene initiative and how perfectly it
fits with the ideal of sustainable communities? It’s working, with our local
stores maintaining steady business, and new ones still opening up in the last
months, even in this downturn.
Even better, take a look at the Village of Catskill’s new Downtown and Waterfront Revitalization Plan,
which has come a long way already with last fall’s release of the first part of a multi-year planning
process. It looks at ways of making our creek and riverfront properties a key to our future, just as they
were all important to our past.
We’re now putting together a wish list of everything we’d love to see done to make our town even better,
and asking all our membership to please contact us with suggestions. Remember, when the Town &
Village Greenway Committee did this a decade ago, they came up with a final list of 45 “To Do” items,
33 of which have been completed to date. Not bad, if you ask me…
Augmenting the continuing growth of Main Street, with the continuing success of Snap Fitness in
the former First Baptist Church and the River Street Bakery’s expansion from their seasonal Farmer’s
Market location to Brandow’s Alley behind the Bank of Greene County, among other developments, we
feel this new waterfront push will make us a unique Hudson River destination at a time when people are
again interested in the river’s history and promise. Talk about perfect timing!
All in all, we’ve had a good year, and are looking forward to an even better one ahead. Sure, there’ll be
some messy bits, just like with the facelift our magnificent courthouse is getting right at the center of
everything. But by the end of it all, I suspect this will be one of those times we’ll be looking back and
celebrating 200, even 400 years hence.
After all, we are amongst the coolest!

Forging Ahead By Looking Back...
REMEMBER WHAT RIP LEARNED: A WELCOME TO ALL!
In the famous Washington
Irving story that has so defined our
area for years, an aged Rip Van Winkle
returns to his hometown to find it
progressed almost beyond recognition.
But gradually, the place’s unchanging
charms re-introduce themselves and
before long, he’s been welcomed back
into a new generation of townsfolk’s
hearts.
That special town, most now
agree, was none other than an earlier
version of our very own Catskill. And
that characterization of the place as
a progressive place with a busy but
friendly air about it has maintained to
this day.
It’s become, we have grown to
realize, what pundits are saying is our
saving grace, and future’s hope, during
the recent economic challenges.
Now, the Town of Catskill
is a mixture of a protected historic
village and an up-and-coming
highway business district filled with
up-to-date shopping possibilities. The
larger township joins together quiet
hamlets, with some such as Leeds
and Palenville being eternally touristrelated, while others such as Kiskatom,
Smiths Landing and Jefferson Heights
remain peacefully working-class and
family-oriented, the sort of bedroom
communities with deep neighborhood
roots so many are searching for in the
region.
Our combined diversity of
real estate, business opportunity, and
community is helping make the area
a key draw for newer businesses and
residents being drawn to the area for
its new green industries, including
solar and biofuel start-ups in the
Catskills and Mid-Hudson regions, the
Capital Region’s promising growth as
a nanotechnology center, as well as
for a growing population of some of
our nation’s top pioneering artists and
writers.
All come, and stay, as much
for the new culture Catskill offers as
its history and welcoming business
climate. They realize the Quality of
Life values inherent in things like the
recently-produced River of Dreams
Hudson River School of Painting. And
for its lively Second Saturday strolls
of Main Street galleries, shops and
restaurants.
For those who have made
neighboring towns centers for antiques
shopping and horse jumping, for second
homes, skiing and golf retreats, as well
as river-centered water sports, Catskill
is an utterly charming community of
musical that defined the spring of 2009,
our parades and fireworks celebrations,
concerts and other regular events at
The Point, overlooking the scenic
Hudson River, and the burgeoning
new WGXC Community Radio effort
and all its special events from poetry
readings and art shows to concerts and
film screenings.
Catskill is now known far
and wide for the annual, and hugely
popular, Cat’n Around Catskill
public art project, and benefit sale
each September. For its increasingly
renowned Thomas Cole National
Museum Site at the birthplace of the
residents and businesspeople who
appreciate the benefits of diversity, the
allure of a good tourist base, strong
institutions with friendly history,
and new blood as committed to the
ageless Catskill dream of progress
and prosperity as that place Rip Van
Winkle came back to after awakening
from his slumber so many years ago.
Talk about a place that learns
from its history, yet keeps an eye on its
future! Things, no matter how the last
decade ended, are definitely looking
up… At least right here in Catskill.

Third Century Good As The First...
Business Built On A Quality Of Life Foundation!
Back in the starting decade
of the 19th Century, Catskill
underwent a growth spurt of over
200 homes in a single ten year
span. It then started, around 1810,
to amplify its reputation as a new
center for commerce and culture
by laying out a townscape of
beautiful streets flanked by new tree
plantings, nestled on a spit of land
punctuated by church spires and
majestic business and governmental
buildings.
100 years later, in 1910,
Catskill was celebrating the
completion of its majestic new
Greene County Courthouse, along
with a wealth of new building of
both businesses and residences that
made the town a shining jewel along
the river. The town was served by
two rail lines, countless dayliner
ferries, and its very own tram
service to help folk get up and down
its hilly terrain. Streets were lined
with beautiful maples, oaks and
elms, and Catskill hotels were the
rival of any in the nearby Catskills,
and far ahead of those in other
communities up and down the river.
Today, at the launch of
the 21st Century’s second decade,
Catskill is awaiting the inauguration
of a restored courthouse, enjoying
the benefits of a revived Main
Street, and reveling in the glories of
so many local homes and storefronts
getting long-awaited facelifts.
The newly-released and
much-talked about Downtown and
Waterfront Revitalization Strategy
is offering further opportunities for
new businesses and industries, and

investment, by increasing tourist
traffic to the village center, and
Hudson River waterfront. Included
are means to attract new hotels
and restaurants, new shops and a
better walking environment back to
town… as well as a modern form
of trolley to carry folks to and from
the river’s edge and all it will be
offering.
There’s even talk of
reshaping Main Street’s business
hours, reconfiguring Catskill from
its earlier focus as a county seat and
market town to a wider-reaching
destination that will once more
take its place as one of the Hudson
Valley’s key communities. People
are looking for more bookstores
and specialty shops, restaurants
and music venues, to match the
region’s new youthfulness, and lend
it greater panache when drawing
people in from the great metro areas
to our south, north and east.
With all this hope for
change, and new progress, buoyed
by new presentation materials, in
print and online forms, it’s now as
though the inner dreams the town’s
been harboring for years have
finally become visual for all to see.
Talk about visions with real
legs, and dreams with real harbors
in which to land.
As it once was, in century’s
starts past, so our town will be once
more… a vibrant landing spot for
those with an eye to the future, as
well as the past.
Catskill’s ready for it all,
once more…
Home For Resilient Independence
Inventive Charm Has Long Been Our Calling Card!
During the challenging years
of the Great Depression, back in
the 1930s, Catskill saw its present
day consolidated Middle School
built, new bridges constructed or
modernized, its hospital expanded,
and one of the state’s most modern
post offices erected. Because of the
trials of one anti-Prohibition county
resident, the renowned gangster
Legs Diamond, the town was the
recipient of major news coverage…
as well as on the lips of anyone
with a penchant for underground
celebrities of the day.
Life was hard in
those days, but the townsfolk
worked hard and built upon the
foundations it had built as a county
seat with strong businesses built
upon its being a long-respected
crossroads, both for travelers and
tourists seeking Hudson River and
Catskills vacation destinations.
It survived because of its historic
institutions, but also from its
ability to constantly remake itself
via the influx of new residents,
business, and investment.
Catskill today is again a
community for all ages, ready to
meet our changing times’ many
challenges.
The town wears its age
well, with more and more of
its key older buildings newly
renovated or being refurbished
for new uses… from old churches
reconfigured to new uses as stateof-the-art health clubs to former
schools reshaped for government
use.
Many of our businesses
are well over a century old, while
even those considered newer have
a steadiness unseen in other towns
our size. Our older residents stick
around, as often as not, because
they understand and appreciate
Quality of Life when they see it.
And everyone else seems ready
to imagine living their lives
out here… Catskill is a place
to stay, a town with history and
steadfastness.
Yet Catskill keeps
heralding its freshness via
our welcoming way with new
residents, coming here from New
York City and other locations
because they want to be part of the
energy they’ve seen here, while
renovating our classic old homes.
Our freshness is visible in our
family-friendly summer events,
our unique way with holidays. It’s
there in the way the community
supports its cultural institutions,
new and old, from the centuriesold Daily Mail to the new start up
community radio station, WGXCFM< expected to be on the air, as
well as online, by later in the year.
The town has a vibrant
restaurant scene, as diverse as
any major city’s in its mix of
Thai, Chinese, Burmese, Sushi,
Italian and good old American
cuisines… with more on the
way as Water Street opens up
to new development. We’re a
hotbed of theatrical premieres and
independent movie nights. Artist
studio tours and more fireworks
than any other town its size along
this great river.
Even the town and village’s real
estate markets seem to be holding
their own, even with corrections
and broker signs sometimes
staying up longer than we wish.
The interest in our great housing
stock is there.
In other words, we’re a
town and village both young and
old… A truly lasting community,
Catskill, for all ages.

A History Of Strong Institutions...
Rewarding Innovation Is The Key To Our Growth!
As the Hudson River gained
international attention entering
its 500th year of never-ending
progress, one of the lessons learned
had to do with the many ways in
which our Empire State cities and
towns taught the rest of the nation
how institutional history matters,
especially when length of service
is intrinsically tied to depth of
community caring.
One of the greatest aspects
of today’s Catskill, and greater
Greene County, is the manner in
which it incorporates longstanding
banking, insurance, business,
manufacturing and educational
institutions with an ever-refreshing
concern for our newer residents. We
welcome change, in other words,
just as we’ve always welcomed
change. But when we reward
innovation, it’s not for its own
sake, but for the ways in which
institutions, and capital, are needed
to build community for the long
haul.
Just think of the ways in
which the early Catskill attorney,
John Van Der Speigle, was also
one of our nation’s pioneering
horticulturalists. Or the manner
by which our town’s first banks,
still with us today, invested in our
nation’s first railroad ventures.
During the 19th and 20th
centuries, Catskill businessmen
were eclectic. They sent ships to the
West Indies for rum and molasses,
traded with Europe, and eventually
built textile factories that shifted to
papermaking and then lingerie.

Even though many of
Catskill’s banks are now owned by
corporations based elsewhere, they
have maintained their small-town
character. They provide a financial
backbone one can count on for a
regional, national, and international
waves of progress.
Remember that vision of
a renewed waterfront and main
street we spoke of earlier? It doesn’t
come to us from elsewhere, but
continuing successful future.
Just as our local churches
reach back and do the same for us
all, spiritually; or our schools, from
local daycares through Catskill
Elementary, Middle School,
and High School, as well as the
Columbia-Greene Community
College across the river, keep our
kids curious, learning, and teaching
us all how to be good citizens of a
changing world.
Catskill is and always
has been a town with visionary
administrators who always look
to capture not only the local, but
from within our community…
from our Greene County Planning
Department, its leading lights all
living here, as well as the Greene
County Industrial Development
Agency, the Greene County
Legislature based here, the Village
and Town of Catskill, and our own
Heart of Catskill Association.
We remain a great place for
the future, in other words. Just as
we’ve always been, and hopefully
will always stay…

foundation of our institutions!
Keeping The Region’s Arts Alive...
Our Cultural Appreciation Adds To Our Attraction
Back before the great author
Henry David Thoreau holed up in a
friend’s cabin to write his epochal
work, Walden, he took a walking
tour of the Catskills, and took ample
time to explore the welcome of the
gateway to its rugged glories in our
town. A half century later, the great
Mark Twain would similarly sojourn
here while making his way from his
home in Hartford to the Catskills
each summer. Now, the place is
becoming known as a home to
some of the world’s top poets, and
is rumored to be a setting for some
of the key new novels coming out in
the coming years.
So it was with literature,
so it’s also been for the visual
arts. The former home of Hudson
River School founder Thomas
Cole is currently home to some of
the international Art World’s key
players. Locally-made films are hits
on the world’s independent cinema
circuits. Native musicians, recording
at home, are taking the globe by
storm, taking with them songs about
Catskill streets, Catskills vistas.
Lectures at Cole’s old home,
Cedar Grove, draw SRO crowds
from throughout the Northeast; the
holograms of the late Rudi Berkhout
have made Catskill a destination for
cognoscenti of this ever-new cutting
edge arts form.
The new lofts being built in
the old Union Mills spaces, on Main
and Water streets, as well as in the
former Washington Irving School
are the envy of other towns seeking
to draw new residents. They’re as
good, and au courant, as anything
offered in SoHo or newly hip-again
Brooklyn.
Cultural tourism has been a
key to Catskill’s draw to the outside
world ever since Cole found
himself drawn to the beauty of the
others open. Music comes and goes.
But then there’s always new blood,
new efforts underway.
Did you hear about the
refurbishing of the old footbridge
starting this summer? Word is it’ll
vistas from our town alongside the
Hudson, and in turn drew not only
more artists, but all those in our
burgeoning nation who cared about
building America into the great
beacon of civilization it is today.
And as it once was, back
when, so it still goes today… albeit
in a fashion distinctly suited to the
more mass tastes of our current
age. Just look at all the cats we’ve
got from our annual Cat’n Around
benefit art shows gracing these
pages…
Sure, as with all things
cultural, there are unforeseen
changes. Some galleries close, but
replace Massachusetts’ Bridge
of Flowers as a horticulturalist
destination. Or the sound and word
festivals that started quietly last
November and are set to continue
into the future?
Something’s in the air. They
say it’s bohemian, yet classic, avant
garde, but with an appreciation of
local history.
A purely Catskill
phenomenon, in other words.
And another passing of the torch,
culturally-speaking, that keeps
our long history at the center of
American civilization, let alone the
world’s, ever-alive. As always…

The Greening Of Catskill’s Future
When Talk Turns To Sustainable & Smart Growth,
It Seems Our Town Helped Write The Book!
“In this age, when a
meager utilitarianism seems
ready to absorb every feeling and
sentiment, and what is sometimes
called improvement in its march
makes us fear that the bright and
tender flowers of the imagination
shall all be crushed beneath its
iron tramp, it would be well to
cultivate the oasis that yet remains
to us, and thus preserve the germs
of a future and a purer system,”
wrote Catskill’s most famous son,
Thomas Cole, nearly 175 years
ago. “American associations are
not so much of the past as of the
present and the future… Where
the wolf roams, the plough shall

glisten; on the gray crag shall rise
temple and tower — mighty deeds
shall be done in the now pathless
wilderness; and poets yet unborn
shall sanctify the soil.”
Catskill has long been,
and continues to be, a business
town known for its home specialty
stores, the fine quality of local
goods, the friendly nature of its
special shopping experience. A
place where day-trippers, history
buffs, art lovers, and a growing
number of international guests
come to enjoy small town life
as it was and as it should be…
energetic, fun, inspirational, and as
the much-blogged magazines have
consistently put it, cool.
It’s a place seemingly
custom-designed to fit the new
buzzwords about Sustainability
and Smart Growth. Because what
Catskill is becoming is what it’s
long been… a place that values
its resources, natural and human.
A community that knows how
important all elements of a diverse
economic base can be, from the
arts and tourism to manufacturing
and retail.
The Catskill life is
bounded by nature. We have a
deep connection to water, with
the mighty Hudson on one side,
connected by canal to the Great
Lakes and points north drawing an
increasing number of boaters from
up and down the Atlantic coast, to
the shelter of our pleasant Catskill
Creek on the other. Then there are
our views of distant mountains,
including both the nearby Catskills
and further afield Berkshires. And
finally, we maintain an agricultural
presence the envy of other places
who’ve paved over their heritage.
Think of Story’s, to the west,
and Black Horse Farms, to the
north. The flatlands along the
Catskill Creek and all the smaller
dairy, livestock, vegetable and
flower enterprises that dot our
map, lending us the promise of
sustenance even when others lose
their produce to the vicissitudes of
modern transportation.
Catskill is also greener
than most other towns its size.
Think of not only our parks,
ranging from Dutchman’s Landing
and The Point to the BeattiePowers House and the many trails
now making our town such a joy to
walk, but also the verdant quality
of our streets, the myriad fine
trees and gardens and pleasurable
vistas.
As it’s been, so we all
hope it always will be. By now
cleaning up those areas that were
polluted in the world’s rush to
industrialize in past centuries,
with the help of state Brownfields
grants. By once again drawing
the town and village’s attention to
our waterfronts, and promoting
healthy fun, from kayaking to
walking, from new health clubs to
active outdoor events throughout
the year.
It is here that the National
Audubon Society and Scenic
Hudson share the heralded
Ramshorn Livingston Sanctuary,
and on our borders that the state
maintains its Kaaterskill Falls and
Inspiration Point trails, and the
Greene County Environmental
Education Center operated in
tandem with the community
college at the increasingly popular
Cohotate Preserve alongside the
Hudson, where the old ice houses
once sat and worked their trade.
Catskill is where
contemporary artists come
to renew our generation’s
connections with the same
landscapes Cole taught us all to
cherish in the first place, as well as
where the last of the truly classic
age-old Catskills hotels of the
golden era still exist, up in the
Kiskatom area.

But then he answered for
all of us, then as for now.
“We are still in Eden,” he
noted. “The only wall that shuts
us out of the garden is our own
ignorance and folly.”
Thank heaven we face the
Greene County, and
Catskill, has a tradition of being
green. Which it will now use to
lead others into our new collected
green future.
