Phone: (518) 523-9625 www.lakeplacidhorseshow.com I Bob Daniels t is with much regret and sadness that we must announce the passing of Bob Daniels, a great friend to this editor and to many in polo and outside of polo. Sustaining injuries from a polo accident on Wednesday afternoon, Bob passed away peacefully at midnight on Friday. Bob made his professional career in the software business and, when discovering the game in the 80’s, he became an enthusiastic polo player. His Pony Express team won the Sterling Cup in 1996 with the late Gonzalo Heguy, Horacio Heguy and Anja Eckbo defeating Isla Carroll in overtime; Isla Carroll played with John Goodman, Gonzalo Heguy, Owen Rinehart and then 16 year old Jeff Hall. When the US Open Polo Championship was played in Florida starting in 1996, Bob mounted competitive teams, and in a stretch of 4 years from 1998 to 2001 was especially convincing. First in 1998, during a time when the Heguy brothers were out of circulation, Bob put together a young, talented team with Pancho Bensadon, Miguel Astrada and the late Javier Astrada. A combination of circumstances kept that team from going to the semifinals. Then, the 1999 campaign was halted in the final by Champion Outback when in a key play late fifth chukker Bautista Heguy (the Heguys were back in action) and Adolfo Cambiaso fought for the ball, Bautista’s mallet broke, Adolfo escaped with the ball and the rest is history, Outback winning again in 2000 and 2001. Both years, 2000 and 2001, Pony Express had a very competitive team, both times unsuccessful in the later stages of the tournament. Bob Daniels had a fondness for horses, his purchase of Silverada in 1995 from Judith Baker, a mare no one wanted to buy, made history in 1996 winning Best Playing Pony and Best type at Palermo played by Gonzalo Heguy. For the first time American Polo Breeders can purchase semen from the Top Stallions in Argentina and get it to their facilities in the United States within 24 hours of purchase. Patrick Simmons, who owns Genetic Leaders International Inc. (GLI) a major export/import company founded in 1978 in the U.S., and Juan Cruz Magrini, owner of Los Pingos del Taita, a multidisciplinary team in Equine Assisted Reproduction since 2006 in Argentina, have joined forces to bring the best products to the United States. Says Juan Cruz Magrini: “This is the best polo genetics in the world,” echoed by Pat Simmons: “We promise rapid, efficient service. The buyer can receive their semen within 24 hours after the order is received.” The facility of Los Pingos del Taita, also known as “The Cradle of Champions” is located in Rio Cuarto in the province of Cordoba, a 5-hour drive from Buenos Aires, and Juan Cruz Magrini and his team welcome everyone to pay a visit. Auction Sales are held the third Monday of November in Buenos Aires. A visit to the website is very instructive: www.en.lospingosdeltaita.com. It is very well organized and deep with pedigree, photos and useful information. Patrick Simmons and Juan Cruz Magrini are present today at IPC for the final of the USPA Gold Cup. In addition to the website, they provide a very instructive and detailed book, written in English, of available stallions in the United States for semen purchase with extensive display of each stallion’s pedigree and career, and a list of their progeny with names attached of players who have played them including the likes of Adolfo Cambiaso, Mariano Aguerre, Pelon Sterling, Nic Roldan, Fred Mannix, Sapo Caset among others. Facundo Sola played a superb 4th chukker scoring three very nice goals for Dubai to lead 8-6. Facundo Sola had a fine run in the fifth for 9-6, Miguel Astrada with a goal back for 9-7. Miguel got Coca-Cola closer early sixth chukker, 9-8, but once again Facundo Sola showed his amazing ability with a superb 240 yard run for 10-8, Dubai winning 11-9. Top, Miguel Astrada and Adolfo Cambiaso. Left, Facundo Sola and Miguel Astrada. (ph David Lominska, Polographics. com) The second game was excellent, both teams very fast with great plays. The score was more or less tied, Orchard Hill each time ahead by a goal and 8-7 to end the third. Early fourth, Rodrigo Andrade had a great backhander pass to Fred Mannix for a run to goal, Rodrigo finishing for 8-all. Fred Mannix had a lovely cut for 9-8 early fifth, Facundo Pieres getting the tie back at 9-all, and from the throw-in Hilario Ulloa had a super run for the lead 10-9, Orchard Hill. Audi opened the sixth with a 40 yard conversion by Gonzalito Pieres, Gonzalito with a nice cut shot next for 11-10, and eventually, late in the chukker jumped on an error in defense to score for Audi’s win 12-10.
