ACTIVITIES UPDATE
ACTIVITY CAMPS
4th of July Parade
A beautiful Saturday morning brought out our biggest parade crowd and group of spectators
yet! Highland Creek families joined Station 31 fire truck for a parade around Prosperity Park.
During the parade, our fantastic judges along with Dr. Jennifer Doriott with ChiroPure had
to make some very tough decisions on who would win each category. A big thank you to Dr.
Jennifer Doriott who sponsored bottled water for the parade
participants and Lisa Crates Photography for the fantastic
pictures! A link to view the photos is available via the
Highland Creek website under past events. Each participant
went home with an American flag, horn and Highland Creek
logo beach ball. Congratulations to the following winners:
Best in Show: 1st place: Barrett & Cadence; 2nd place: Riley;
3rd place: Fuller, Most Patriotic: 1st place: Sam; 2nd place:
Maggie; 3rd place: Magdalena, Most Original: 1st place:
Anna & George; 2nd place: Rose; 3rd place: Reese, Most
Patriotic Family: Worcester Family, Most Patriotic Pet: 1st
place: #28; 2nd place: #27; 3rd place: #65 Pickles.
Another fun-filled summer was experienced by many Highland Creek kids who participated in the several summer camps offered this year.
Lotsa Art Camp
First week of mixed media art camp was a great success! Budding artists worked on self
portraits, abstract collages, Georgia O’Keeffe-ish flowers, sunset silhouettes, styrofoam
monoprints, and more. We used a variety of materials including acrylics, watercolors,
and oil pastels.
Mixed-Media Art Camp - Young artists spent the week creating masterpieces using a
variety of materials. Some of the projects included: Acrylic Sunset silhouette paintings
on canvas, “Surprise” watercolor self-portraits, newsprint collage, Georgia O’Keefe
inspired oil pastels etc...
Cool Paper Projects - These artists focused their attention towards creating decoupage
clipboards, acrylic message blocks, paper mâché and styrofoam mono printing
projects. Hopefully all the kids learned a lot and had
as much fun as their instructor did!
Engineering of Pirates
July Adult BINGO
During this camp campers joined the crew to work together to explore the everyday engineering challenges
that pirates were once faced with. Students explored the ideas of buoyancy and surface area as they designed
their pirate ships, the sails for their ships, and a system to retrieve sunken treasures! Our Engineering for Kids
pirates engineered ways to build their ship, load it up and sail around the world. In this camp, students explored
industrial and marine engineering as they designed their own boat and sails and devised ways to dive deep into
the ocean to retrieve buried treasure.
Adult Bingo this past summer was a night to remember.
With a few new games and a ton of gift cards to win, the
evening was full of excitement. Player’s Grille served
complimentary appetizers and Highland Creek Golf Club
sponsored four rounds of golf as prizes. The evening came
to an end when the last and final game was played.
Charlotte Reading Web
Sponsored by Consuelo Souders, Keller Williams Realty and Brian Souders, Supreme Lending, a
$250 gift card was won in a tie! The two lucky winners, Tania Bravo and Kelly Merges decided to
split the prize and walk away with a $125 gift card each. Thank you to Consuelo for pulling the
numbers throughout the evening. Thank you gift card sponsors: Cathy Staskel & Associates, Allen
Tate Realty; Countryside Montessori School; Dr. Jen Doriott, ChiroPure; Rachael Benson, Norwex;
and Highland Creek Golf Club.
Charlotte’s Reading Web had an awesome time playing reading games and doing science projects with the
preschoolers at Highland Creek Clubhouse! The kids were fishing for letters, writing words in shaving cream,
and playing hopscotch with words! They also participated in two hands-on experiments each day! The teachers
loved spending time with each of these sweet kids.
Mad Science had a BLAST bringing their Destination Earth and Shazam camps to the Highland Creek
community this summer. Campers learned about mother Earth, tsunamis, earthquakes and other things
influenced by the rotation of the Earth and shifts in the ground. They also learned about animals and how they hunt, camouflage themselves for
protection and dietary habits. In Shazam, campers did chemical experiments and watched the reactions before their eyes. They also experienced
optical illusions and different types of movie special effects. On the last day they experimented with heat and enjoyed cotton candy (changing sugar
by adding heat and adding air).
Photography Camp
We had an amazing Photo Camp this year!! We included video this year to make a short movie. Junior
photographers (campers) made a storyboard, built sets, recorded, and learned how hard it is to make a
movie. We also caught and photographed bugs, food, designs, and sports. We had a fashion shoot and
underwater photography to find treasure and lots of funny faces!
Kids Cooking
Aspiring chefs enjoyed an hour of cooking where they could be creative and try new foods. On the menu was breakfast burritos and fruit salad!
The children received their own mixing bowls and whisks where they cracked and stirred eggs and then helped
cook them. Once cooked and put on tortilla wraps they added yummy
ingredients such as black beans, cheese, bacon, sausage, tomatoes and
salsa. After they finished their burrito they received their own mini
cookie cutter to cut fruit shapes for their salad. A few of the items such
as eggs, peaches and tomatoes were purchased fresh from our own
Highland Creek Farmers Market!
Computer Explorers Camp
The second kids’ cooking was hosted by Chef Ed Price. He presented
the participants with a menu full of flavor that each child was able to
assemble on their own and bring home plenty to feed their family. The
menu consisted of fruit salad, Chicken Caesar wraps and summer salad.

SPORTS CAMPS
NATIONAL NIGHT OUT – 2015
All summer long Highland Creek kids took over the courts and fields at Prosperity Park for Sports Summer Camps. Camps included Soccer for Tots,
Soccer for Beginners and Intermediate, Lacrosse, Tennis, Basketball, Cheerleading and numerous Multi-Sport camps.
On August 4th, the Highland Creek Community joined together at Prosperity Park to celebrate National Night Out. This annual event takes place
nationwide to connect neighbors and promote police-community partnerships in order to make our neighborhoods safer and better places to live.
The camps have an exciting and structured atmosphere for the children not only to play and exercise, but to enjoy their summer break and have fun
in the sun!
The Highland Creek event was well attended by the community with over 300+ residents enjoying food, fun activities for children and adults, raffles,
and the landing of a Charlotte Mecklenburg County Police Department Helicopter. Kids Safety ID kits were given out and sponsored by Michelle
O’Connor, O’Connor Insurance Associates. Attendees of event included members of the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office, Charlotte
Mecklenburg County and City of Concord Police Departments and Fire Departments, and Charlotte Mayor pro-tem, Michael Barnes.
Multi-Sport Camp
Coach Doug, Owner of FitKid Sports, has hosted Multi-Sport and Basketball camps in Highland Creek for many years—each year the camp is even
larger and more fun than the last! Throughout his camps there are warm ups and exercises, fun drills for all ages and they even manage to squeeze
in some pool time for the full day campers. The multi-sport camp includes basketball, soccer, flag football and more! The camp has been such a hit
over the years that Highland Creek now offers this camp three times a summer!
Lacrosse Camp
Miner’s Lacrosse hosted their first ever camp with Highland Creek in early August and had a great turn out. Coach Tim Hogan’s firsthand
experience, playing lacrosse starting at his youth and on through college, offered the children a lot of valuable insight on tips and advice to excel in
the game. Many parents were excited to see this new addition to our program in action!
Soccer Camp
Coach Mike Raymond returned for another year with Highland Creek just as enthusiastic as ever! His high energy level always gets the children
excited for the soccer camp no matter their age or skill level. Mike offers camps for tots and older children—some in the evening and some in the
morning. His passion for the game rubs off on all the campers.
Tennis Camp
Highland Creek’s Tennis Director, Mike Conroy, hosted his first camp program with us this summer as he is new to our team. Four weeks of camps
were offered for residents and their guests and each week grew more than the one beforehand. Mike’s on-court presence with the children
brought out the tennis player in each and every one of them.
Special thanks to the members of the Highland Creek Business Association who sponsored this event for our community - providing food, drinks,
activities and raffle prizes: Jeremy Canipe - The Canipe Law Firm, PLLC; Amie Cennamo - Snap Fitness; Janice Crook - Janice Crook CPA, PLLC; Phil
Deppen- Cranial Overdrive; Sandy Endsley - Highland Wealth Management, LLC; Jeff Hamm - Speedway Detail; Valerie Hunter - Hunter & Hein,

The winner was: Erik
Geldbach (Congratulations Erik!).
Cheer Camp
Cheer Camp made
an IMPACT… literally!
Impact One Allstars came
out to host a camp in
Highland Creek this year
and we had an amazing
turnout. On the first and
second day of camp they
learned a cheer, dance
and motion sequence
for the performance to
follow later in the week.
Wednesday they took to
the field for stunt day followed by tumbles on Thursday. Friday was the big finale as
they performed their cheer and dance routine in front of all of their parents. Each child received a camp shirt as well. This camp took off so well,
that in 2016 there will be TWO camps offered! A thank you goes out to Camp Advisor and Head Coach Melissa Schneider, Coach Paige, Brittany and
Tumble Coach Grant.

Management presenting Erik Geldbach

Dog Day’s of Summer
This year, Highland Creek’s four-legged residents took advantage of the Dog Days of Summer Photo Session at Prosperity Park for their own time
to shine :) Thanks to all who came out, a portion of your donation goes to Puppy Charities in the area for adoptions into good homes for lots of
spoiling and love!!
Splish Splash - We’re having a blast!
Swim lessons are vital for every child to master the art of swimming and for parents to have an enjoyable
experience at the pool knowing their child holds these necessary skills. pH Pool Management hosts a
Swim Lesson Program for Highland Creek residents at Clarke Creek Pool each summer. The program offers
group lessons for ages 3 and up, semi-private and private lessons for all other ages ranging from infancy to
adult. The group lessons have four different sessions and each includes a level where the child will learn
and accomplish various skill sets to move forward in graduating from this program. The program starts with
beginner skills in the Jellyfish level and gradually progresses to the Seal level, Swordfish and finally ending with
the Whale class. Each one is molded specifically to your child’s needs by the instructor. This summer dozens
of children participated in the program as well as private lessons. We release this information in March of
each year, so keep a look out for next summer!

each session, prizes were awarded to the lucky winners. Prizes included board games, movies and gift cards. Plus
all kids went home with a Highland Creek frisbee. Congratulations to the lucky grand prize winners! Thank you to
our volunteers: Olivia, Madison, Kennedy and Paige.
The “Send Summer off in Style” End of Summer Pool Party was a huge success! It was held on Saturday, August 29th
at Christenbury Pool and sponsored by Sarah Zdeb and her SmartSavvySOLD Team at Keller Williams Realty. Sarah
and her team provided free food, treats, games and prizes throughout the day. Over 880 Highland Creek adults and
children arrived enthusiastic and ready to PARTY….and they did, ALL DAY LONG!
Movie in the Park – Paddington
It was a beautiful, cooler night in August. A group of residents came out to enjoy Paddington on the big inflatable
screen! Free popcorn was served and Kona Ice was on-site serving tasty ice treats.
Highland Creek Knight: Take me out to the Ball Game!
The Charlotte Knights proudly partnered with Highland Creek on Friday August 21st for the first annual “Highland
Creek Knight!” Residents were able to purchase tickets through a link provided by the Charlotte Knights that was
made specially for the community so they could all sit together during this event. Highland Creek also received a special rate and the opportunity to
enter to be a part of the Charlotte Knights “Dream Team” Fan Experience.
Due to inclement weather, the Charlotte Knights ended up hosting a double header allowing families to enjoy double the baseball! Children
reported to the stadium prior to the game and were escorted down onto the field by the Charlotte Knights dugout. Each child was then partnered
up with a Knight’s player and ran out onto the field with them. Once the players and children took their places, they were able to stay on the ball
field during the National Anthem. Each participating child received a complimentary Charlotte Knights t-shirt and memories they could hold onto
for a lifetime.
This game will be an annual event for Highland Creek! So with that said, we will see you next fall!
“Dream Team” Fan Experience
Flick n’ Float
Over 60 Highland Creek rising and current middle schoolers came out to their own private pool party and movie! The kids voted on the movie to
watch and McFarland USA was the winner. While watching the movie the kids enjoyed pizza, drinks and popcorn. A big thank you to Jets Pizza for
donating pizza and our chaperone Beth Smith.

Highland Creek News.....................................October/November 2015 26
One of the CDOT (Charlotte Dept. of Transportation) nominated our neighborhood, me and Sarah Parker
Zdeb for the City of Charlotte Neighborhood Leadership awards in the category of Moving Charlotte
Forward. Anyone who knows me and Sarah knows how much time and effort we've been putting into
this whole thing. It's like job number 2. Only we're not paid for it! We get our rewards in other ways.
One of which is being able to pull our communities together for the greater good of all. While they
called out me and Sarah, this work would be for naught if people hadn't stepped up and participated.
This nomination is really for everyone in our area. Great work everyone!!
Over the past two years, city staff worked with residents to develop the Prosperity Hucks Area Plan, which was adopted
by City Council on July 27, 2015. This plan is unique in Charlotte because the area contains a “split-diamond” interchange
with I-485. This interchange design was selected to create something that currently does not exist in the city – a grid of
thoroughfares along an I-485 exit from which a walkable, mixed-use activity center can be created by development. The combination
of complete street concepts, an intricate local street grid, and a mixture of well-designed street retail, office and residential land uses called for
in the plan will be instrumental in transforming the area and achieving the vision established by City Council. Sarah Zdeb and Theresa Rosa Corey
made an outstanding contribution to the promotion of transportation choices and neighborhood livability because of their efforts and leadership in
the development process of the Area Plan.
Through the initial planning process, a divided group of residents expressed a varying and often opposing set of views and opinions about how the
area should be developed. Because of the diverse set of opinions, the planning process was extended by over a year in order to have additional
public dialogue. Sarah and Theresa were instrumental in establishing and leading a multi-neighborhood coalition (including residents from Highland
Creek and many other neighborhoods) that helped determine the course of the Prosperity Hucks Area Plan. The group helped organize and
guide the discussion with the City to generate consensus. They worked tirelessly with City staff by attending over a dozen public meetings, design
charrettes and organized a Core Group of multiple neighborhood leaders to provide additional input on many details of the plan. Their leadership
resulted in many changes within the plan, resulting in strong policies and recommendations for incorporating the transportation and land use
concepts needed to achieve the vision for the area; and they converted a deeply divided group of residents into a unified group that strongly
supported the area plan.
Chicken Broccoli Alfredo Stuffed Shells
1 jar (16 oz.) alfredo sauce
2 cups cooked chicken, shredded
2 cups cooked broccoli, chopped
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1/4 cup shredded parmesan
21 jumbo pasta shells, cooked
1 1/2 – 2 cups spaghetti sauce (optional, but I love the combination of
alfredo with tomato sauce!)
Preheat oven to 350°. Use a large bowl to mix alfredo, chicken, broccoli,
and cheeses. Spoon the mixture you have into pasta shells. Grease 13 x
9 baking dish with butter or cooking spray. Spread spaghetti sauce on
bottom of baking dish. Arrange shells in baking pan. Cover with foil and
bake 35 minutes .
TIPS:
1. In case you don’t have time, you can prep all items in advance, right up to the point of baking. You should just keep covered in refrigerator until you are ready to bake.
2. If you have a cookie scoop, use it to easily stuff your shells!

Tree Banding for Cankerworms
Last year was pretty nasty with
cankerworms hanging from our trees and
dirtying our cars, patios, decks, driveways
and us (if you were walking/jogging on
our parkway and trails). Here are the
instructions for doing your tree banding.
The steps involved are as follows:
1. Install a strip of cotton or insulation
around tree at least 3 feet from
ground and below the lowest limb.

2.
Position a band of roofing felt over
the strip and attach it to the trees
with a staple gun. Avoid using staples
on small, young or thin barked trees.
Instead use electrical tape to hold the
bands.
3.
Using disposable gloves and a putty
knife, put a film of Tanglefoot™ (glue)
directly on the band, approximately
1/8” thick. The Tanglefoot™
entangles the caterpillars as they
make their way up the tree from the
ground where they have laid their
eggs.
It is suggested that all trees be banded,
especially the larger ones. It is also
suggested that trees be banded after most
of the leaves have fallen and before the
frost days have settled in. Bands should
be removed during the first week of
February.
In Highland Creek you may have noted
that due to the enormous amount of trees
that we have, we have limited ourselves to
certain trees along the parkway and those
in most need of banding.

Individual & Family Plans
The landscape treatment for Highland Creek is intended to be a unifying element in the design
of the overall community. Highland Creek’s Design Guidelines state that the homeowner is
responsible for landscaping and maintaining all areas on their property as well as the portion on
the street right of way between the property line and the street curb. Many residential properties
throughout Highland Creek battle each year with intrusive Bermuda grass and numerous
broadleaf weeds. Below are some recommendations on how to renovate and care for your
fescue turf. It is important for you to take diligent steps in early fall to restore the health and
attractiveness of your lawn.
GARDENING
Renovation of a Fescue Lawn and Improving Your Yard this Fall
Here are a few tips to remember in the most important time of the year for successful fescue turf
care:
1. Start in Mid-August and start killing the invasive weeds. Use Round-up for Bermuda grass (2 applications, 2 weeks apart), or broadleaf weed killer for other noxious weeds.
2. Next, get a soil test. This is the highest recommendation we can give you. Have that completed by the end of August so you know what nutrients your soil and turf need.
3. Purchase “certified” blue tagged turf-type tall fescue. If you have an un-irrigated lawn, consider certified Kentucky 31 fescue, as it has a thicker blade of grass and is good in the hottest months. Certified means that the majority, about 98%, of the noxious weed seeds have been sifted out.
4. Figure that you will need 3-4 lbs. of seed per 1,000 sq. ft. of lawn. Most residential lawns are from 8,000 to 10,000 sq ft, so buy the 50lb. bag. You can use the extra seed to hit the spots that did not germinate well. You can seed through the end of October successfully.
5. Apply 18-24-12, or similar, starter fertilizer when you aerate. This fertilizer lasts 4-6 weeks and helps the new seed germinate. Fertilize again 4-6 weeks later with a winterizing fertilizer that helps your turf do well and produce root growth over the winter.
6. Depending on your soil test, it is also a good time to lime. Some healthy lawns do not need to lime, as the soil ph is where it needs to be, between 6 & 7. Lime leaches into the soil layer very slowly, so the best time to apply is when the plugs have been removed from aeration. This helps the lime get down into the root zone quicker and more effectively. The only true way to determine if you need lime is to do a ph test of the soil. One, 40 lb. bag of lime per 1,000 sq ft of turf, will generally raise the
ph about 1/2 point.
7. Either rent an aerator or find the guy coming down the street. Either way works well. The guy coming down the street will probably charge you $40 -$60 to aerate only. Have him do it in both directions and he will earn his money. Make sure that you flag all your irrigation valve boxes, irrigation heads and invisible fences before he starts. Remember, it is not his fault if he hits something he cannot see.
8. The seeding and fertilizing can be done by the contractor or you. It only takes 15 – 30 minutes to finish this part out, so it might be a lot more cost effective to do it yourself. Remember, follow the directions on the product label!!! If you are not sure how much to apply, hire it out. Just check to make sure they are using good products as mentioned above.
9. Finally, water. You have to keep the ground moist as soon as the seed gets wet. If you don’t, then you have wasted a lot of time and money. Moist enough to walk on, but not soaked. You will need to keep up the watering for about two weeks and you should be okay.
Spring Tips to Remember:
First of March - apply fertilizer with pre-emergent herbicide (weed & feed)
Unlimited Chiropractic Care
With Monthly Memberships
JoinDrJen.com
(704) 970-7127
First of May - apply a 2nd round of fertilizer with
pre-emergent (low in nitrogen- the first # on the
bag. This is very important - Two applications
in the Spring will keep crabgrass and other
broadleaf weeds out of your lawn until August.
Remember, you cannot seed once you apply
pre-emergent. It is designed to keep seeds from
germinating, even grass seed. Spray breakthrough weeds with a broadleaf weed killer you
can find at most hardware stores.

41 Highland Creek News.............................................October/November 2015
highlandcreek.com
Highland Creek has always taken
great pride in the standard of lawn
care exhibited by the majority of
its residents. Thank you to those
residents who have begun treating
the weeds in your lawn and are
planning to re-seed and fertilize this
fall. Please note that owners are
expected to maintain their yards
at minimal and realistic standards.
These minimal expectations are:
zz Cut the grass on a regular schedule to maintain a maximum height of 5”.
zz Pull or kill the weeds.
zz Trim the grass, weeds and groundcover off the sidewalk and driveway.
zz Mow to eliminate grass seed head growth (sprouting).
zz Mow the grass between the sidewalk and street.
It is important for you to take
diligent steps in the fall to restore
the health and attractiveness of
your lawn. Bare spots are prevalent
in many yards; please plan now to
work on this condition if it exists
on your property. Talk with your
landscape maintenance company,
gather information on the process
for turf restoration or talk with a
professional at a garden center
for guidance. Helpful information
highlandcreek.com
concerning lawn care maintenance/
renovation can also be found on
the HOA website by clicking on
the “Resources” tab and then
“Landscaping”. The Covenants
Committee strongly urges you to
aerate and seed/sod your lawn
in the fall in order to experience
healthy turf restoration. Thank you
in advance for doing your part to
restore the high standard of lawn
care that Highland Creek is working
to maintain.
Association Governing
Documents on Website
If you do not have, or cannot find, a
copy of your governing documents
for Highland Creek, they are posted
on the website (highlandcreek.
com). Click on the “Resources”
tab, and then select “Governing
Documents and Forms”. You
will see a list of choices. The
Declarations, along with the Design
Guidelines, set forth the restrictive
covenants for the community;
the Rules and Guidelines for
Harmonious Living restate
selected restrictions in an “easier
to read” format and verbiage.
Thank you for understanding the
importance of these restrictive
covenants and design guidelines.
They promote an atmosphere of
harmony and establish a unified
and environmentally sensitive place
to live.
Park Hours during Winter
Months
The community parks will close
at 7:30 p.m. during the months of
November through March. Tennis
courts at Prosperity and Clarke
Creek Parks will remain open until
10:00 p.m. Signs are posted in the
parks to reflect the winter hours;
persons in the park after 7:30 p.m.
will be considered trespassing.
Holiday Decorations
It may seem early for this topic,
but holiday decorations were in
the stores before Labor Day. The
governing documents state that,
“Holiday decorations are acceptable
but must not be in place more than
30 days prior to an event and must
be removed 15 days after an event.”
Please be aware of this restriction
and plan your holiday decorating
within this guideline. Also, do not
dispose of your holiday wreaths
and/or trees by dumping them in
neighborhood creeks. The dead
trees block the creeks, resulting
in standing water that becomes
stagnant and causes damage to
property along the creeks. You may
place your holiday trees street side
and the City of Charlotte/Concord
will dispose of them properly at no
extra charge to you.
Removal of Trash Containers
from Curbside
Please be mindful that Charlotte
Mecklenburg Ordinance states
any customer who places solid
waste at curbside prior to the day
before the scheduled collection
date or who fails to remove solid
waste and/or containers from
curbside by midnight on the day
of collection may be issued a civil
penalty in the amount of $50.00.
If you live in Concord, please note
that Cabarrus County Ordinance
states you are allowed to place
your waste curbside after 5:00 p.m.
the evening before your scheduled
collection day, and containers
must be removed from the curb by
9:00 p.m. on your collection day.
Leaving your container at the curb
after your collection day may result
in code enforcement penalties in
Mecklenburg and Cabarrus County.
“Quick” Tips for Homeowners
Some of the Association related
tips below may acquaint you with
amenities and activities; others may
save you time and money. These
are in no way a substitute for your
governing documents.
¾¾ Commercial vehicles, trailers, campers or boats shall be parked only in enclosed garages.
¾¾ Please use the sidewalks and trails to walk, jog, or push baby strollers. It is often difficult to see pedestrians due to vehicles parked on the streets, curves and darkness.
¾¾ Carry your Highland Creek photo card ID with you when enjoying Association ¾¾
¾¾

No artificial flowers or vegetation of any kind are permitted on the exterior of your home.
Burning of trash, leaves, yard debris, etc. is not allowed. If you have dead or dying trees or shrubs on your property, please remove them and dispose of properly (do not throw debris onto Common Open Space).
Yard ornaments must be natural in color, made of weather resistant materials and less than 18” in height;the maximum number of ornaments in one yard is five.
When walking your dog, please carry a “pooper scooper” and bag to clean up your pet’s wastes; this is the responsibility of the pet owner.
