IRS Announces 2016 Filing Start Date and Delayed Tax Day
The Internal Revenue Service has announced
the filing date for the nation’s 2016 tax season. There
will be no delay this year -- the tax season will begin
as scheduled on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2016.
The IRS will begin accepting individual electronic
returns that day. The IRS expects to receive more
than 150 million individual returns in 2016, with more
than four out of five being prepared using tax return
preparation software and e-filed. The IRS will begin
processing paper tax returns at the same time.
“We look forward to opening the 2016 tax season
on time,” IRS Commissioner John Koskinen said.
“Our employees have been working hard throughout
this year to make this happen. We also appreciate
the help from the nation’s tax professionals and
the software community, who are critical to helping

with the Mid-Tex Show and will offer commodity sessions, special meetings and forums.
Topics of discussion will include beef, horticulture and grain; health and fitness with a busy
schedule; cotton, forage and wildlife; and other
training and re-certification sessions.
On Tuesday, January 5, selected McLennan County high school students will be
awarded scholarships for outstanding FFA,
FHA and 4-H members at the Allen Samuels
Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram Fiat Scholarship
Luncheon. These unique and exceptional
students also plan to major in an agricultural
and home economics related field. Scholarships are sponsored by Associated Concrete

The filing deadline to submit 2015 tax returns will
be delayed this year. Tax Day is Monday, April 18,
2016, rather than the traditional April 15 date. Washington, D.C., will celebrate Emancipation Day on that
Friday, which pushes the deadline to the following
business day -- Monday for most of the nation.
The IRS urges all taxpayers to make sure they
have all their year-end statements in hand before
filing, including Forms W-2 from employers, Forms
1099 from banks and other payers, and Form
1095-A from the Marketplace for those claiming the
premium tax credit.
Although the IRS begins accepting returns on
Jan. 19, many tax software companies will begin accepting tax returns earlier in January and submitting
them to the IRS when processing systems open.
Choosing e-file and direct deposit for refunds
remains the fastest and safest way to file an accurate income tax return and receive a refund. The
IRS anticipates issuing more than nine out of 10
refunds in less than 21 days.
Find free options to get tax help, and to prepare
and file your return on IRS.gov or in your community
if you qualify. Go to IRS.gov and click on the Filing
tab to see your options.
The IRS also reminds taxpayers that a trusted
tax professional can provide helpful information
and advice about the ever-changing tax code. Tips
for choosing a return preparer and details about
national tax professional groups are available on
IRS.gov.

The second annual Dinner in the Dark charity event
is being hosted, Thursday,
January 28, by the Waco
Women’s Lions Club at the
historic Waco Hippodrome,
located on Austin Avenue.
You will be served a wonderful dinner, in the dark, for an
enormous perspective into
what it is like to be blind. As
promised, you will enjoy “a
meal like you’ve never seen”
to support a cause with a
vision.

to Leader Dogs for the Blind.
This is a fascinating organization that provides highly
trained service animals for
Blind and visually impaired
people.”

Baylor Senior Awarded Prestigious British Marshall Scholarship
Jacob Imam, a senior University Scholar at Baylor University,
has been selected as one of 32
American university students
– and the only student from a
Texas university – to receive the
prestigious 2016 Marshall Scholarship. The announcement of the
award was made Nov. 30 by the
Marshall Aid Commemoration
Commission, which includes eight
regional committees who select
the recipients.
The Marshall Scholarship was
established in 1953 to express
British gratitude for the European
Recovery Program after World
War II. The scholarship may be
used for study at any university
in the United Kingdom, with most
Marshall Scholars choosing to
pursue an advanced degree
during their two years of British
education.
The premier scholarly award
will allow Imam to fund his studies at Oxford University, where he
will seek a master in philosophy
degree (M.Phil.) in Islamic studies and history. He is a graduate
of The Bear Creek School in
Redmond, Washington, and will
receive his bachelor’s degree
from Baylor in May.
“Jacob Imam is a young man of
immense talent and noble goals,
all focused on fostering religious
liberty and mutual understanding across seemingly intractable
cultural barriers in the Middle
East,” said Baylor President and
Chancellor Ken Starr. “Jacob’s
ambitious and admirable goals
will be reached only by receiving
the finest training possible at the
graduate level. With that education, he will begin a life of service
in pursuit of reconciliation and
restoration among diverse faiths.
The world needs next-generation
leaders like Jacob is poised to
become – those who can provide
guidance and wisdom in an evolving global culture.”
After receiving an email from
the Marshall Commission confirming the scholarship, Imam
said he immediately grabbed his
rosary and headed out for a walk.

languages includes spoken
Arabic, Classical and Ecclesiastical Latin, Greek and
Ancient Hebrew. He is completing an Honors thesis and
has a forthcoming scholarly
publication with additional
articles under revision or
review. He has held summer
research internships at the
Centre for Muslim-Christian
Studies at Oxford and at
Tyndal House at Cambridge.
Baylor professors, including Dr. Alden Smith, Dr. Jeff
Fish and Dr. Ralph Wood,
as well as faculty at Oxford,
where Imam studied during
the spring 2015 semester. All were effusive about
Imam’s scholarly pursuits.

in two winter music performances by 37 performers.
The performances included
violin duets, a piano duet
on the nice grand piano,
vocal solos, violin solos
with piano accompaniment,
piano solos, and fiddle tunes
accompanied by guitarist
David DeBorde, brother
of a fiddle student. A few
of the pieces and songs
included, “God Help the Outcasts”, “Carol of the Bells”,
“Billy in the Lowground”,
Chopin’s “Waltz in a Minor”, “America”, “Snowfall”,
“Energico”, “Kaiser Waltz”,
“Winter Wind”, “Bullfrog
Blues”, “Joyful Bells” and
“Footprints in the Snow”.
Most of the students played
two pieces. One of the residents who was a retired 2nd
grade teacher said, “The
children brought joy to my
heart.”

Dinner in the Dark is a
unique event where each
guest will experience an
evening as a blind person.
We know we can never
fully comprehend what a
blind person goes through
every day, but our goal is
to provide guests a glimpse
into their world. Our night
will benefit Leader Dogs for
the Blind, an amazing organization that per their mission statement is “Empowering people who are blind
or visually impaired with
lifelong skills for safe and
independent daily travel.
Each Leader dog costs approximately $39,000 from
pup to fully trained dog,
and Waco Women’s Lions
club believes this event is
an awesome opportunity
to help offset some of that
cost.”
This year’s venue for
the charity dinner will be
hosted at the Hippodrome,
downtown Waco, and the
details of the dinner will be
“kept in the dark”. This venue allows for more people
to attend the event. There
will only be 200 tickets sold
for the event. Tickets are

“We won’t give away
details of the menu. We
don’t want people to know
what to expect,” Lenamon
explains.
When asked about how
you eat in the dark, Lenamon enlightened, “Our adventurous diners will enjoy
this unique and exciting
menu while blindfolded;
clothing will be protected
by a plastic apron. They will
have instruction from table
guides and will be given
tips about best practices
throughout dinner.”
The focus is on the dining experience. There will
not be a movie showing or
any entertainment. Getting
the food in your mouth will
be entertaining enough.
The Waco Women’s Lions Club is based in Waco
and has many women from
all walks of life, professions, ages and interests.
