President Barry Fitzgerald introduced Lisa Sorin, President of LAS Consulting
Services. Her company does event planning and Barry asked her to speak to the Club
about what she and if she can help us make the President’s Dinner even more successful.
Ms. Sorin was the President of the Bronx Chamber of Commerce for 2 years, during
which time she managed to increase membership and the vitality of the organization.
She told members that she started out working in community relations, marketing
and public relations for private companies in the Bronx and this led her into event
planning. She started in that field in the South Bronx doing community outreach for
2 private organizations. She put together budgets for them and tried to figure out the
best ways in which they could relate to their communities. This led to many working
relationships throughout the Bronx and also in Westchester County.
In the past few years she has worked
closely with the Bronx YMCA to develop

the amount of help needed by the Club.

dependent upon the honorees, the audience and how we target the audience
with the event. She said we must ask
ourselves what the event brings to the
community, to the Bronx, and what does
the organization get in return for it. She
also said that a realistic goal is to increase
income from the event by at least 10%.
While she admitted that honorees are
chosen because they are persons who
deserve the acknowledgement of their
deeds, she advised that organizations
need to focus on those that can also
attract people to events. She also recommends choosing one honoree from each
of the following 3 categories: a foundation or corporate leader, a Rotarian from
our own Club and a person representative of an issue that we provide support
for, ie: health, hunger, education, etc.
Ms. Sorin said that the mission of an
organization is also very important. She
said that elected officials all want to be
associated with something that impacts
their constituency in a meaningful way.
The Club also needs to use its relationship with local newspapers and send
out press releases about the event that
include storylines about major sponsors.
In this way, sponsors can see that they are
getting advertising bang for their buck as
well as acknowledgement of their generous support for good works.
She also said that in developing an
event, the Club needs to specify what each
level of sponsorship actually achieves. For
example, A Gold Sponsorship of $6,500
would pay part of the costs of the event
and pay for Gift of Life surgery for 1
child. A Silver Sponsorship of $4,500
would pay for some event costs and provide 4 scholarships to Lehman College
students, and so on.

Pasteur, a leading provider of polio
vaccine, in ringing the opening bell in
four financial markets in Europe on 23
February, in honor of Rotary’s 106th
anniversary and in support of a polio-

also ring the closing bell at the New
York Stock Exchange in New York
City.
Representatives of the two organizations will take part in openings
in Lisbon, Portugal; Amsterdam;
Brussels, Belgium; and Paris. The
stock exchange ceremonies represent
the first time the bell will be rung for
a single cause in all five markets.
As the largest company in the world
devoted entirely to human vaccines,
Sanofi Pasteur has played a major role
in the effort to push polio to the brink
of eradication.
Sanofi has contributed millions of
doses of the oral polio vaccine to the
Global Polio Eradication Initiative,
of which Rotary is a spearheading
partner, along with the World Health
Organization, the U.S. Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention, and
UNICEF. Since 1988, the company
has donated 120 million doses of oral
polio vaccine for the immunization
of children in war-ravaged Angola,
Liberia, Sierra Leone, Somalia, and
Southern Sudan.
Throughout the week of 23 February,
Rotary clubs and districts will also be
illuminating iconic landmarks around
the world with the End Polio Now
message to raise awareness of Rotary’s
pledge to rid the world of the crippling disease.
The landmarks include the Trevi
Fountain in Rome; the parliament
building in The Hague; the soccer stadium in Cape Town, South Africa; a
gate at the Lantern Festival in Taiwan;
Kanazawa Castle in Kanazawa, Japan;
the government building in Karachi,
Pakistan; the planetarium in Seoul,
Korea; the Globe of the Mall of Asia
in the Philippines; and the Charminar
in Hyderabad, India.

Cheryl Simmons-Oliver for her leadership and all the work that she has done
to make the subset meetings a success.
This brainchild of Cheryl’s began during her term as President of the Bronx
Rotary Club and have gained momentum this year. Each event during the
2010-2011 year has turned a profit for
the Club and members and guests have
been enjoying the new format and fellowship.
Barry also told the Club that Donald
Arthur has sent a written request for a
donation to the Achilles Track Club.
The request will be forwarded to the
Foundation Committee members for
consideration.
Michael Quane from Montefiore
Medical Center who brought speaker
Dr. Christine Walsh to the attention of
the Bronx Rotary Club, has suggested
Latisha Young as a speaker. She is from
the Anguilla Tourism Board. As Barry
said, hearing about someplace warm and
sunny sounds like just what the doctor
ordered after this long, cold winter.
Rotary Leadership Institute will
be held on March 12 in Ossining at
the Ossining High School. So far, Ed
Hicks, Cheryl Simmons-Oliver and Rick
Sherman plan to attend.
Finally, Dr. Arthur Wolstein announced
that our own Cheryl Simmons-Oliver
will be honored at the VISIONS
Luncheon on March 4th at Frankie &
Johnnie’s Pine Restaurant. Tickets are
$80. There will be no regular meeting on March 1st so that members will
attend the VISIONS event as a make
up. The Club has committed to filling
2 tables, so please let Barry know if you
will be attending..
Rotary Leadership
Istitute
What is our mission? The mission
of The Rotary Leadership Institute is to
provide an educational opportunity for
Rotarians identified as potential leaders by their club presidents. Each club
president is asked annually to nominate
club members as potential club leaders
(not necessarily future presidents) in the
years ahead. Courses will be given for the
nominees to foster Rotary knowledge
and leadership skills. It is hoped that
these courses will also motivate the participants to be enthusiastic, creative and
dedicated Rotarians. Those attending the
three course days for their full duration
will receive recognition of completion.
Course methods will reflect the most
innovative and participatory methods
possible. Methods will include discussion
groups, role-playing, problem solving
workshops, group planning exercises, etc.
Lectures are limited.
The Institute offers a leadership development program in three full day sessions
(Parts I, II and III). The courses are
designed to provide Rotary knowledge

All courses start with registration at
7:30am. Classes are from 8:00am to
3:30pm - breakfast, lunch, and coffee
breaks are included. Courses are listed on
the RLI website, where online registration is available.
The Institute believes in course sessions with as much discussion/participation as possible. Discussion breakout
sessions are limited to approximately
10-15 persons. Lectures are strictly limited. Course methods include discussion
groups, role-playing, problem solving
workshops, creating projects and audiovisual presentations. Everyone participates
during one of the Institute’s sessions. A
course workbook containing an Institute
Manual, session program agendas, faculty biographies, and course outlines and
materials, is provided to each attendee.
The faculty members are carefully
selected by the Institute for their teaching
abilities. They are drawn from all areas of
the member districts and occasionally
from outside the member districts. Many
are present and past R.I. directors, present and past district governors, successful
past presidents and those with experience
in special areas. Each new faculty member
must attend an initial full day training
program and various periodic reorientation programs. The results of evaluations
help the Institute to improve the course
content and instruction.
Rotary needs a constant influx of leadership as club officers, etc. change every
year. It is difficult at the club level to
learn enough about the exciting world
of Rotary with its 1.2 million members
in 164 countries. Furthermore, leadership skills in a voluntary organization are
often different from business leadership
skills. It is important that club leaders
have every opportunity for education
because the success or failure of our clubs
depends in large part on the quality of
their leaders.
