Harrell voted Tribune’s Best Teacher by readers
By Wendy Byerly Wood
[email protected]
JONESVILLE — For a number of
youth growing up in a small community,
they want to get away to a large city and
the many opportunities it offers. But for
Tribune Reader’s Choice Best Teacher
recipient Heather Harrell, coming back
home after receiving her degree was the
only option she would consider.
As a fifth-grade math and science
teacher at Jonesville Elementary School,
Harrell said, “I wanted to give back to
the community that gave so much to
me. I attended school here and I feel like
the teachers in my past coming through
were part of my success.”
Harrell, a graduate of Starmount High
School and Jonesville Elementary School
alum, went on to attend Appalachian
State University to earn her teaching
degree in 2008. While she teaches both
math and science, Harrell said math is
her first love. “What got me interested in
math was Mrs. Groce at Starmount who
taught me freshman math.”
And teaching was something she
knew she wanted to pursue from an
early age. “Since I was in kindergarten
or first grade,” she said that was her
interest.
Harrell stuck with education after
graduating, despite a hiring freeze and
difficult budget time which meant no

full-time teaching positions. She served
as a substitute teacher and then a teaching assistant, holding out until a fulltime position opened up five years ago at
Jonesville. “I didn’t want to go to Charlotte or Greensboro, so I hung around,”
Harrell said.
For her, teaching is an important piece
of making a child successful. “I think
it’s important that I make a difference
in the lives of these children, and if I
make a difference in just one, then I’ve
accomplished what I set out to do,” said
Harrell as she sat at one of her student’s
desks in her classroom.
At Jonesville, students beginning in
fourth grade see two academic teachers
during the day, one for math and science
and then another for English and social
studies. Harrell said this set up allows
her to focus more effort on the math and
science lessons she offers, rather than
having to spread her time across four
topics.
“I feel like I accomplish something
when I watch the kids and a light bulb
comes on and they figure it out, and
they teach me different ways of doing
things,” Harrell said. “I like the younger
kids and working with the younger kids.
I really always any time I envisioned
myself being a teacher, it was in an
elementary setting.”
For some people in education, it is a
family affair, but Harrell said she is the
only teacher in her family. She credited
her family for always supporting her and
encouraging her to pursue education as
her career.
“I was excited and humbled,” she said
of learning she’d been voted Best Teacher by Tribune readers. “I was happy the
community thought that much of me to
vote for me.”
One of the things her students enjoy
about her classroom, she said, is the
active weather station which is mounted
outside her classroom and continuously
reports back on weather conditions
for the students to monitor. She said
another piece of the education in her
room includes Kindle tablets, which the
students use daily for math and science
assignments. The Kindles were funded
through Donors Choose, an online forum
where people around the world can find
projects to donate to and support.
“My favorite part of being a teacher
is watching students become successful
with something they were struggling
with. When the light bulb goes on, I
know I must be doing something right,”
Harrell said. “And I like being from a
small town. Everybody knows most
everybody. This is home, this is where
I’m comfortable.”
She said her former students come
back to visit her, some she sees dropping
off or picking up their younger siblings,
and she said the sixth-graders stop by
her classroom for a morning hug before
school starts. Her first students are now
completing their ninth grade year.
Harrell is the daughter of Michael
Harrell of Ronda and Beverly Harrell of
Jonesville.

Teacher Appreciation: Our favorite teachers
Editor’s Note: In showing our appreciation for area teachers, the hard
work, sacrifices and daily efforts they
put into making area children prepared
for their futures, the staff of The Tribune and The Yadkin Ripple wanted
to give our readers the opportunity to
share their stories with the community.
Here are two of those stories, both written by students at Elkin Elementary
School.
My Favorite Teacher
I was three and a half years old and
you had to be four to get into Pleasant
Hill Daycare, they also didn’t have any
spots open. The first time I walked
into Mrs. Hilda’s class room I was smiling and my mom knew that’s where
I wanted to go so In a couple of days
my mom got a phone call saying a spot
opened up. On my first day Mrs. Hilda
was told that she had a new student and
that Zena could not speak any English
or understand it but she said, “I will
take the challenge”. I was really nervous
my first day there even to the point
where I started crying but I stopped
crying because Mrs. Hilda made me feel
so welcome she helped me learn lots of
new words. I can name lots of reasons
why Mrs. Hilda is my favorite teacher
but the most important reason was she
help me by who I am today. Mrs. Hilda
was almost seventy when I was in preschool and now she’s almost eighty and
she still works giving children an amazing experience. Mrs. Hilda has been
teaching more than I can count but she
has the most experience.
By Zena Petrocy
My Favorite Teachers
I have four favorite teachers. The
first is Mrs. Brown she teaches third
grade at Elkin Elementary School. She
was my first teacher when I moved
to Elkin. She was a great teacher and
made me feel welcome in a new school.
She always tells me I need a volleyball
in my hand. Next is Mrs. Swaim she
is the best reading teacher ever. She
gives you candy if you do your work.
I’m all about being bribed. She teaches
reading and social studies in a way I
understand. Third is Mrs. Smith her
class was always fun me and my classmates compete as to who her favorite
student was. Mrs. Henstock is my other
favorite teacher. She is funny and keeps
us interested in what she is teaching. I
have been very lucky to have had great
teachers so far.

Advice for soon-to-be
graduates
Graduation season, an oft-emotional
time of great celebration and reflection, is on the horizon. Though soonto-be graduates are about to have one
set of challenges firmly behind them,
other important life decisions and
experiences are looming in the nottoo-distant future.
Although there’s no magic set of
rules for post-graduation, the following advice can help recent gradates
transition from the classroom to the
ceremony and then life after school.
• Attend the graduation ceremony.
Graduating students may debate
whether or not to attend their graduation ceremonies. Such ceremonies
tend to be lengthy, and outdoor affairs
can be hot and uncomfortable. However, graduation is a milestone moment
that you won’t get to enjoy again.
Attending graduation allows you one
last academic experience, and even
if that may seem like too meaningful
right now, you might regret skipping
the ceremony down the road.
• Enjoy graduation but buckle down
once the dust settles. According to
a survey by the National Association
of Colleges and Employers, the job
market for new graduates is improving marginally. But the Institute for
College Access and Success notes
that many college graduates will be
saddled with around $25,000 in debt
upon earning their degrees. Many
student loans have a six-month repayment grace period after graduation,
so new grads who don’t already have
a job lined up may want to use some
of that grace period to travel, visit
distant relatives or relax and recharge
before their first payment comes due.
Use the time wisely, but be prepared
to buckle down when the time comes
to start repaying loans.
• Join an alumni association.
Regardless of the size of your school,
chances are strong they have a local
alumni association and several chapters across the country. Take advantage of these organizations to connect with fellow alumni, who can be
invaluable sources of information and
provide connections that may help
you find a job in your field.
• Read and learn new skills. If you
have yet to land that first job, use
some of your down time to reacquaint
yourself with reading for pleasure
instead of reading as part of an
assignment. You also can use extra
time to explore new skills, such as
learning certain software or applications that may help you stand out in a
competitive job market.
• Before you decide what you want
to do, you may have to figure out
what you don’t like. Another way to
use free time is to volunteer or apply
for internships in fields you may
want to work in. These experiences
can help you determine your career
options and find a career you find
both challenging and exciting. But
such opportunities can also help you
determine when a given line of work
isn’t for you. Oftentimes, finding the
right career path takes some trial and
error. Don’t get too down if an opportunity doesn’t pan out. Instead, keep
your head up and take advantage of
the next opportunity that comes your
way.
Graduation is a time of mixed emotions. Graduates can not only use
graduation season to make lasting
memories with friends but also to
take the first steps toward the next
phase of their lives.
“For the most important decisions in your life, trust your intuition,
and then work with everything you have, to prove it right.”

How to curtail college costs
Scholarships, grants and work-study programs are a few ways to
keep college costs down.
Education is an expensive investment, costing
many people as much as their homes and far more
than their vehicles. And the cost of a college education only continues to rise. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, for the 2012-2013
academic year, the annual costs for undergraduate
tuition, room and board were estimated at $15,000
for public schools and between $23,000 and $39,000
for private institutions, whether they were for-profit
or nonprofit.
Few students are able to fund their schooling outright, which means they must seek ways to finance
their educations. The following are a handful of
strategies students can employ to curtail college
costs.
• Investigate scholarship programs. Colleges and
universities offer scholarships to incoming students
based on various criteria. Start by speaking with
a school guidance counselor about available scholarships. Consult directly with the schools where
you plan to apply for admission. You may find that
they offer scholarships based on academic merit,
extracurricular activities or athletics. You also can
do a search online. Scholarships.com, for example,
enables you to find available money to pay for college.
• Explore academic grants. Grants are another
form of financial assistance for students to explore.
Unlike scholarships, which are awarded based on
merit, grants are not tied to a specific list of criteria that must be met. Financial need is often given
greater weight when awarding grants than academic
performance. Public and private organizations, professional associations, the government, and even
schools sponsor various types of grants.
• Sign up for work-study programs. Work-study
programs are another form of financial aid. When
part of a work-study program, students work parttime to offset their college expenses. Jobs may be
available on-campus or off-campus, though ones that
are on-campus may be more amenable to your class
schedule.
• Stick closer to home. Many students dream of
attending college away from home and immersing
themselves in a new environment — including dorm
life. However, attending school close to home can
drastically reduce the cost of pursuing your degree.
At public universities, tuition costs for in-state students are typically a lot less than the costs for outof-state students. Room and board costs, which outof-state students who can’t commute to school must
pay, can cost several thousand dollars per year. If
you can find a school close to home and commute to
school, you can save a substantial amount of money.
• Be frugal with food. Food costs can quickly add
up if you frequently dine out. College towns have a
number of attractions and eateries, and it’s easy to
succumb to the draw and convenience of takeout or
sit-down meals at a restaurant. Limit dining out to
special occasions and try to stick to dining halls or
meals you prepare yourself to reduce food costs.
The cost of higher education continues to climb.
But there are ways to make post-secondary schooling more affordable.
“And now go, and make interesting mistakes, make amazing
mistakes, make glorious and fantastic mistakes. Break rules. Leave
the world more interesting for your being here.”
