As we prepare to enter 2015, I
would like to express my deep
gratitude and appreciation to
each of you for your outstanding
commitment to Greater Media

to blaze new trails due to your

your dedication to your fellow

loudly throughout the quarter.
I recently had the privilege of
attending the official dedication
of the Healing Garden at the

BOSTON
Mary Hutchinson
Assistant Business Manager
Greater Media Boston
After 14 years making Greater
Media greater, Mary Hutchinson
will retire in January. Although
quiet by nature, Mary has been
a cornerstone of the Business
Office staff and among our most
knowledgeable and reliable employees
since her arrival in September
2000. Most are unaware of Mary’s
responsibilities, but her work ethic
and commitment to the day-to-day
requirements of her position have
contributed enormously to the
efficiency of our business operation.
Her customer-service orientation
has provided countless employees
with assistance they are unaware has
even occurred—particularly our sales
staff and the everyday challenges
with billing and receivables. “Her
knowledge and management of
our accounting systems have been a
critically important contribution to
managing our operation. She has
been my right arm for the whole
century, and nobody will miss her
more than me!” said Robert Di Salvo,
Controller. Thank you, Mary, for
your outstanding contribution.
CHARLOTTE
Boomer Von Cannon
Traffic Reporter
WBT AM/FM and SkyLink Traffic
Boomer Von Cannon has been a
staple in Charlotte for years and
was the afternoon-drive jock at a
well-known classic oldies station,
MAGIC 96.1, for about 13 years. His
“Cartunes” show, featuring sound
effects and dialogue from cartoons
mixed with great oldies, made the
drive home fun. Callers would give
Boomer real traffic reports from
their cell phones, and in return for
their “on the scene” information,
the listener would get a request
played while stuck in traffic. Now,
WBT AM/FM and WLNK-FM have
the privilege of working with this
legendary voice on the radio as he
delivers traffic reports with style every
day for WBT AM/FM and SkyLink
Traffic! Always smiling. Team player.
Dedicated. Strives to be the best.
That’s Boomer!
Amelia Davis
Interactive Coordinator
WBT AM/FM and WLNK-FM
Amelia Davis is the website and email
graphics specialist. Anything that you
can imagine, she can do. Her attitude
and enthusiasm make everyone feel
confident that the job will get done
right. Since joining Greater Media
Charlotte just three years ago, she has
quickly become the go-to person.
She brings creativity to her designs
that help paint the visual picture of
what we do every day on the air. She
is also a professional photographer,
which comes in very handy, especially
when something needs a little
Photoshop touchup! Amelia is also
an active participant in our station
events. You may find her updating
the website and social media or you
may find her setting up at an event or
managing our Event Team. Every day,
Amelia is helping make WBT AM/
FM and WLNK-FM, Greater Media
Charlotte, greater.
DETROIT
Erik Aratari
Event Coordinator
Greater Media Detroit
With a passion for music and
concerts, it’s no surprise that Greater
Media Detroit Event Coordinator
Erik Aratari found his way to a career
in radio.
Growing up in the Detroit area, Erik
remembers listening to 101 WRIFFM and loving it. Little did he know
back then that he would not only
intern at WRIF-FM but eventually
have the chance to work with many
of the jocks he loved to listen to on
the air.
It was Erik’s family, too, that saw
a path for him and his passion,
and encouraged him to enroll in
broadcasting school. An internship
was part of the curriculum, and Erik
landed a position with Greater Media
Detroit.
Erik smiles as he remembers his
internship with WRIF-FM. “I loved
going to all the events. For me, it was
a lot of firsts. Believe it or not, it was
the first time I had ever been east of
I-75,” Erik shared. He added, “Most
of all it was great meeting all the
people that loved WRIF. That’s still
one of my favorite parts of my job.”
Five years ago, Erik joined the
Greater Media Detroit family full
time. As a member of the Event
Team, Erik has had the opportunity
to do and see things he only dreamed
of. “One of my favorite memories is
when I engineered an interview with
Slash. I couldn’t believe I was right
there. It was so cool.”
Erik added, “It was [WCSX
Promotions Manager] Ben Perez
who really had faith in me and my
abilities. He continues to help me
be the best I can be at my job.”
Erik recently found an outlet to share
his passion for music, metal, more
specifically, as part of the team on
RIFF2, WRIF-FM’s HD2 station. He
began doing a weekend air shift and
then decided to teach himself Pro
Tools editing software so that one day
he would be able to produce his own
specialty show. As a self-starter, Erik
went one step further and reached
out to Chop Shop Host/Producer
Steve Black for tips on how to do
show production.
Shortly thereafter, “Inside the
Circle Pit” was born. Listeners get
two hours of metal madness, band
interviews and insight from Host
and Producer Erik Aratari. When
he talks about the show, you can see
the excitement in Erik’s face and
hear it in his voice. “I love metal and
exploring the different types of metal
music. It’s such a rush when one of
my interviews gets picked up by an
outside publication like Blabbermouth.
This show really lets me follow my
passion for metal music.”
While it may seem like Erik is all
business, he makes sure to leave time
for what’s truly important in life. The
youngest of three, Erik puts family
first. He has been a caregiver for his
brother Chris who has cerebral palsy.
“I really love taking him to concerts
and Tigers and Red Wings games. It
means a lot for us to be able to spend
time together and having fun,” he
said.
Erik also makes time to pursue
another passion, photography. He
often photographs the concerts he
works and attends. Being a Detroit
native, there’s no surprise that Erik is
also a huge Red Wings fan. He shared
with us, “My girlfriend thinks I live
on NHL.com. Sometimes she finds
me checking out stories and stats on
NHL.com while listening to metal.
What can I say? Hockey and metal
make my day.”
It’s interesting how fate works. Erik
told us that about 12 years ago,
when he was attending a WRIF-FM
event, he won a pair of tickets to see
Aerosmith from Screamin’ Scott.
Today you can find Erik working
alongside Screamin’ Scott, and, yes,
he still has the ticket stub from that
Aerosmith concert. Talk about living
your dream.
We are proud that Erik Aratari is on
the Greater Media Detroit team and
proud of what he does each day to
make Greater Media great.

Greater Insights
What Radio Can Learn from the Legacy
of Former Boston Mayor Tom Menino
The passing of longtime Boston
Mayor Tom Menino on October
30 provides some important
insights in the midst of the
sadness of his death at age 71.
These are life lessons that can
have an application in the
business and communities
we serve. The first important
lesson is treating a job not only
as a job but a calling. That was
Mayor Tom Menino.
He was honored to be a servant
for the citizens.
He would have done the job for
free, and he never had aspirations
for other jobs in government.
He never took it for granted and
never forgot where he came from.
The mayor was as authentic as
they come.
The mayor campaigned tirelessly
and was unbeatable because he
had more than likely shaken most
hands in the city.
I had the privilege on a number
of instances to be in his
company, and he absolutely
LOVED being the mayor of
Boston. He adored the city he
governed.
The mayor was not a polished
speaker, but when he spoke, he
always was a man whose core
beliefs and values were never
compromised.
His own words said it with such
clarity: “I know this city. I love
this city. I’m prepared to move
our city forward.”
When there were difficult times,
whether during his own health
issues or during a city crisis like
the marathon bombings, he
showed resilient strength and
leadership to lead and show us
the way. When the marathon
bombings occurred, he was in the
hospital, but he insisted that the
doctors release him so he could
speak at a city religious service.
If you are in the radio business
and you examine closely the
definitions of all the qualities
I’ve described, you can become
stronger.
Radio people who are authentic
cannot be duplicated and are a
tremendously valuable aspect of
our business.
Treating a job more as a calling
produces higher quality work,
whether you’re in radio or you are
an automotive mechanic.
Constantly campaigning for
votes or listeners whenever
possible makes the job of
winning people over much
more effortless. Leading
a community, a station or
listening audience takes
courage and consistency.
Many of us who have been in
and around Boston for Greater
Media have been privileged to
see his legacy at work.
He was a regular guest on
Loren and Wally’s morning
show on WROR-FM.
Mayor Tom, we will miss you
and we won’t forget the many
lessons you taught us.

WCSX-FM Hosts Night of the Rockin’ Dead Bash
WCSX-FM threw the
Night of the Rockin’ Dead Bash
on October 17. This
invitation-only event drew
250 listeners to Petruzello’s

costumes and ready to party!
Guests participated in ScaryOkee, where they stepped on
stage to sing with a live band,
but the scary part was they
didn’t know what song they
were singing until they drew
a song out of a hat. WCSXFM on-air personalities
judged the contestants
and awarded cash prizes.
Also on tap were costume

Classic Rock 102.9 WMGK-FM on July 16. The staff, led by Program Director Bill Weston, surprised her during her shift with
a huge card, a cake, and wishes of many more years to come.
Calton says the celebration was a memorable way to share her
special occasion with the coworkers she holds dear.
This on-air personality is a rarity in radio, managing not only to
stay at one station for two decades, but also to maintain the
midday time slot she has had since 1994, not an easy feat in the
radio industry.
Calton loves music and loves helping people, as evidenced
by her fierce dedication to community and charity, which has
been part and parcel of her work at WMGK. Over the years,
Calton has worked with community organizations such as
Media Theatre in Pennsylvania, Family and Community Services of Delaware County, Girls Night Out for Breast Cancer,
various autism causes, and Big Brothers Big Sisters.
“One of my most cherished achievements was lending my
voice to a Grammy Award-winning project, ‘All about Bullies
Big and Small,’ ” Calton said.
Calton was thrilled to be part of it.
“The topic rang true for me as my son Dustin, now 23, has Asperger’s and was bullied in school,” she said. “I could never have
imagined that I would actually be on stage at the Grammys
helping accept an award.”
Calton said she has never shied away from discussing autism or
Asperger’s with her audience.
“Many days, coming into work was my break and respite from
the constant therapies and school meetings,” she said. “The
best information came from other parents. Over the years, I’ve
worked with fundraisers and charities for autism awareness,
and it’s gratifying to see so much more attention paid to it now.
But the work continues.”

WMGK-FM Promotions Director Dan Fein said Calton
has been a “key component”
of the station’s airstaff for two
decades.
“She is among the most charitable and giving members
of our team,” Fein said. “She
works with multiple charitable organizations year-round
and is a fixture in her hometown of Media. She’s always
using her time and her fame
as a member of the WMGK
staff to help her community
grow and advance. She has
also been very involved in autism-related charities and has
been the key supporter for
WMGK’s Dress for Success
clothing drives.
“She’s also one of WMGK’s
strongest social networkers.
She’s created a wonderful
bond with our listeners.”
Calton revealed she’s been “a
rock ’n’ roll girl” ever since she
can remember. The daughter
of a military dad, Calton, born
in Florida, moved all over the
world. Her dad brought home
a Rolling Stones album from
England before it was released in the United States,
and the rest, as they say, “is
history.”
She still has her original “Introducing the Beatles” record
that she got at the age of 8.
When her dad was stationed
in California in the 1960s, Calton “devoured” any information she could find about the
“hippies” in Haight-Ashbury.
After The Beatles came
Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jefferson Airplane, The
Doors, Cream, Jimi Hendrix
and more. Calton spent her
allowance on albums.
From radio, records and
concerts to decking out her
room with Peter Max posters,
black lights and beads, Calton found her niche, one that
paved the way for her shining
radio career.
She began working in radio at
WRPL-FM in Charlotte, where
she did the morning show
and worked as program director.
She moved on to stations in
Florida, Denver and Chicago,
then moved to Philadelphia’s
WYSP-FM for 10 years. In
1994, when WMGK-FM made
the transition to greatest hits
of the ’70s, Calton came on
board and has been there
since.
In between it all, she married
her husband, Chip, a guitar
player. They just celebrated
25 years together.
Calton spoke about some of
the changes she’s witnessed
over the years at MGK, beginning with technology.
“Everything is now computerized,” she said. “Back then, we
used turntables occasionally,
with most of the music being
played from CDs. We recorded requests and phone calls
on a reel-to-reel and edited
by splicing tape. My favorite
technology to come into the
studio in the last 20 years has
been the VoxPro, a digital recorder/editor.”
Social media has also brought
huge changes, says Calton.
“I’m on Facebook, Twitter and
Instagram. It’s part of my job,”
she said. “It’s been a great
way to connect more personally with listeners who love
to get a glimpse of our lives
beyond what they hear on
the air and is a fantastic way
to promote daily features and
station events.”
Calton recalled memories,
now etched forever in her
mind, beginning with her airtime on September 11, 2001, at
9 A.M.
“Experiencing and conveying the unfolding events that
morning was absolutely the
most intense day I’ve ever
spent on the air,” she recalled.
“Trying to stay calm while
presenting facts as they unfolded and presenting news
on a music station was an
experience I could’ve never
imagined.”
Dustin was in elementary
school at the time, and her
fears and emotions had to
be tempered by the task at
hand. Like many parents, Calton could not reach Dustin’s
school.
home and gather him up
in my arms,” she said. “The
days that followed were just
as emotional as I went out
for live broadcasts to different locations every day that
week. We collected teddy
bears to be given to kids who
lost someone during the attacks. People were looking
for an outlet for their sadness and fears and there were
many tears shed during those
shows.”
But she has many happy memories as well, like
meeting rock icons such as
David Crosby, Little Steven,
John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin and Jack Casady of Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna, to
name a few.
Calton is still surprised when
someone recognizes her or
her voice when she is out and
about.
“When I think of it though, after being on the air in Philadelphia for 31 years, the listeners,
and their children, have grown
up right along with me,” Calton says. “We’ve shared many
life events together and I love
thinking about that.”
Those early years before she
joined WMGK-FM were not
always rosy though.
“I was often told [by some
people in the industry] that
as a girl, I should be grateful
I was even working in radio...,”
she recalled. “I’m proud of the
fact that my longevity in the
business, particularly my time
in Philadelphia and 20 years
at WMGK, has proven their
projections baseless.”

WKLB-FM’s LORI GRANDE
Puts Public Face on MS
Country 102.9 Morning Cohost Discovers Diagnosis Can Open
Doors to Helping Others
When Lori Grande was di-
Lori Grande
agnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2006, she feared
it would alter her ability to
live life as she knew it, including being morning cohost at
Greater Media’s Country 102.5
WKLB-FM in Boston, a job
she has enjoyed for 12 years.
The on-air talent decided
to tell Willis four years ago
because he was not only
her partner, but also a close
friend.
Grande kept her diagnosis
private, but in a brave move
recently revealed publicly that
she has MS. Grande said she
kept her diagnosis hidden because she was afraid of what
might lie ahead.
“I felt total fear when I was diagnosed,” says Grande. “I just
kept thinking, ‘I don’t want
this to be true.’ I thought I
would be in a wheelchair in
six months. All I could think
about was that life, as I knew
it, was over.”
She added that she was also
concerned at first about how
MS might affect her ability to
do her job.
“But the fear was more about
someone finding out,” she
admitted. “In a very competitive business I was worried
that the perception would be
that I would be unable to do
my job and that I would be
in a wheelchair.” As a radio
personality, she makes public
appearances that can involve
navigating steps and a stage.
Grande said she only told one
person at work that she had
MS just in case she ever needed help.
Grande co-hosts “JW & Lori in
the Morning” with John Willis, on WKLB-FM. Her job involves getting up at 3 A.M., as
well as appearances and introductions on stage at concerts. On the show Grande

on Hollywood, country music, and beyond, and keeps
people up to date on “What’s
Trending” in Boston and in the
world.
She noted that she has met
many great country music
artists at concerts. “They are
just so humble,” Grande said.
“I’ve also made friends with
many listeners through appearances and parties.”
It’s a show Grande said she is
truly proud to be a part of.
Her doctor told her that
perhaps in the future, she
would want to talk publicly
about having MS. Indeed, as

she learned more about the
disease, and about living a
healthy, happy life with MS,
she felt the need to let people
know that if they were diagnosed with MS, they did not
need to go through the anguish she did initially because
a “long happy, healthy life is
ahead of them.”
She also wanted to show her
coworkers that although she
experiences fatigue, pain or
numbness from time to time,
she was, and is, living a completely normal life and can do
everything she wants to do.
Taking care of herself includes
getting enough rest, walking
and bike riding to keep her
“I wanted to share this with
him. He was shocked at first,
but again the perception is
about all the struggles we
have seen in the past before
there were so many wonderful treatments and medications,” Grande said. “He was
so amazingly supportive. He
was wonderful.”
Willis told her that if she ever
felt ready to talk about it on
the air, they would.
Part of Grande’s mission now
is to allay the fears of others
diagnosed with MS. “They
need to know they have control and can take steps to have
a wonderful life,” she said.
She is aware that there may
be physical challenges for
her in the days or years
ahead, but that there also
“may not be those challenges,” so in her own words,
“Why not hope for and
expect the best?”
Grande has been involved
with
various
fundraising
events for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society but has
now taken it a step further. By
revealing she has MS, she believed she could show people
she is a healthy person living
with MS and put a face to the
disease other than the “very
public, scary faces” that people may relate to MS.

Addresses Effects of the Connected
By Clare Marie Celano
Car on Radio and Automotive Industries
In October, Greater Media proudly participated in the 2nd
annual DASH Conference in Detroit. The two-day conference
was established as a way of bringing together experts from the
radio and automotive worlds for a summit on connected cars
and the ways the technology is transforming both industries.
Tom Bender, Senior Vice President of Greater Media Interactive, moderated a panel centered on determining a roadmap
for the “Future of Radio.” “Radio is innovating, and progress in
the area is more substantial than most broadcasters know,” he
explained.
Along with Emmis’s Paul Brenner and iBiquity’s Robert J.
Struble, Bender spoke about how traditional radio providers
are struggling to figure out how best to help their consumers,
knowing that HD Radio is a growing resource in new automobiles. He pointed to Emmis’s NextRadio, an FM radio interface
for smartphones that he called “a robust approach to dash
integration,” as one such way broadcasters and automakers
can work together.
Detroit radio legend Ken Calvert emceed the event. Greater
Media was also represented by Detroit Vice President and
Market Manager Steve Chessare and WCSX-FM’s Jim O’Brien,
who were on hand to introduce other panels.
Greater Media Detroit’s attendees were pleased that the
important conference was held in their backyard and look
forward to being involved next year.

Martha’s Vineyard in May. After finishing the ride, Grande
called it one of the “very best
days” of her life.
“I can’t even express the pride
I felt and camaraderie with
the other riders,” she said.
“And I did it with MS, which
was even better.” Grande’s
team included her mother, father, sister, brother, nieces and
friends. “It brought us closer
together, but there’s also that
greater connectedness you
have with the other people
on the ride. It’s just joyful,” she
said.

how serendipitous. I found I
wanted the people in the MS
Society, and especially the
women in the show, to know
what I shared with them so
they could know how important it was for me to be a part
of it. I remember standing in
a room of these beautiful,
amazing women and thinking,
‘I’m exactly where I belong,’ ”
she said. “MS has led me
down many roads and eventually led me to being able
to proudly, happily announce
that I had this disease and
maybe make another woman
feel like she is in exactly the
right place.”
Grande was one of the “brave
and beautiful models,” all living with MS.
Grande said that since going

life will lead you where you

accepting it, it seemed doors
opened for me,” she said.

with her. While an intensely
personal decision, Lori’s willingness to tell her story says
so much about her desire to
help others. Everyone on the
Greater Media team supports
her and is in her corner.”

Join Forces to Fight Hunger in New Jersey
1450 WCTC-AM and MAGIC
98.3 FM recently teamed up
once again with The Federation
of New Jersey Food Banks and
the Students Change Hunger program
to collect food donations and
raise awareness that hunger is
everywhere, even in a wealthy state
like New Jersey. The initiative
challenged New Jersey students,
staff, teachers and parents to think
of those less fortunate throughout
the school year by organizing a
food drive at their school, from
mid-September through midNovember. New Jersey schools
from pre-K to college competed
with each other to collect as much
food as possible for their local
food banks. At the end of the
challenge, schools that collected
the most food were presented
with awards by their local food
bank.
Radio personalities interacted
on the air with food-drive
participants and students from

support and relaying valuable
information about the cause
to the listening community.

WMGK-FM John DeBella Turkey Drop
Raises 10,685 Turkeys to Assist Local Families in Need
Cheers erupted inside the
WMGK-FM studios and
throughout the tristate area on
December 1 when Classic Rock
102.9 WMGK-FM’s morning
host, John DeBella, announced
the final total for this year’s
13th annual John DeBella Turkey
Drop. The station collected
10,685 turkeys, a WMGK-FM
Turkey Drop record. Those turkeys
have been and will be provided
to less fortunate families and
individuals that are in need of a
holiday meal.
The John DeBella Turkey Drop is the
largest, one-day food-gathering
event in Philadelphia. On
Tuesday, November 25, John
DeBella broadcast live from
Love Park (site of the famous
Love Statue, across from City
Hall) and the rest of the MGK
air staff spread out across the
area at nine other collection
locations. The Turkey Drop
benefits Cityteam Philadelphia,
an organization that provides
holiday meals as well as other
services to less fortunate
individuals and families in
the tristate area. Cityteam
Philadelphia has seen a record
number of sign-ups for holiday
meal assistance this year, with
a large percentage of families
seeking help for the first time.
Philadelphia Mayor Michael
Nutter was among the many
guests who made an appearance
at DeBella’s Love Park
broadcast. He urged listeners
to make an on-site or online
donation to the Turkey Drop.
This year’s efforts were assisted
by a huge donation from Parx
Casino. Parx Casino surprised
everyone by having a truck with
more than $10,000 worth of
turkeys pull up to the Love Park
live broadcast site.
This year’s output was helped
by sizable donations from a
variety of sources, including
Freedom Credit Union, Giant
Food Stores, UFCW Local 1776,
Hooters Food & Restaurant,
Always Best Care Senior
Services, 6ABC, Dave Magrogan

Craftworkers Local 1, Mingey
General Contractors, and Bob’s

Listeners who weren’t able to
make it out to one of the nine
collection locations were able to

Greater Media Philadelphia Promotes the Greater Good
Volunteers Lend a Hand at Food Bank and at Animal Shelter
The Greater Media Philadelphia
team opted to do two Days of
Greater Good this year to spread
the love and get more employees
involved. The first day took
place on Thursday, August 14, at
Philabundance, and the second
day occurred on Thursday,
October 23, at Philadelphia’s
Animal Care & Control Team
(ACCT).
During the first Day of Greater
Good, 23 volunteers traveled to
Philabundance, the region’s
largest hunger-relief organization
to sort and pack food for the less
fortunate. Philabundance reaches
75,000 people a week, which
means, on average, each volunteer
packages 150 meals per shift. With
23 volunteers Greater Media
Philadelphia fed approximately
3,450 people in the Delaware
Valley!
The group of 23 headed into the
coolers where they spent three
hours sorting, packing, sealing
and stacking boxes of fresh
tomatoes from several local farms.
The volunteers packed more than
1,500 pounds as a result of great
teamwork!
“It is inspiring to see the way the
company works together for such
an important cause. They did
great work for families in need by
giving their time, and it is greatly
appreciated,” said John Fullam,
Vice President/Market Manager,
Greater Media Philadelphia.
In the weeks leading up to the Day
of Greater Good at Philadelphia’s
Animal Care & Control Team,
Greater Media employees
collected blankets, towels, treats
and leashes for the shelter
animals. ACCT sees more than
32,000 animals a year, and
winter can be one of the most
challenging seasons because of the
extremely cold temperatures.
The Greater Media volunteers
were separated into several groups
throughout the shelter and
worked on a mixture of fun and
helpful jobs. One team was tasked
with sorting food donations and

stocking the pet food pantry,
which functions very similarly to a
food pantry for humans, allowing
low-income families to pick up
pet food and treats free of charge.
Another group washed and folded
sheets, towels and blankets so the
shelter animals can feel cozy and
at home in their cages. Volunteers
also worked in the kitchen to make
homemade treats for the dogs.
One group got down and dirty,
cleaning and sanitizing carriers
for transportation of the animals,
while another group deep-cleaned
Kitty Wonderland, the shelter’s
free-roaming cat room. And
of course there was a lot of dog
walking, cat cuddling and petting
of the shelter animals!
“It’s a rare day that every adoptable
dog gets to go outside for a walk,
fresh air and attention, and the
cats definitely got more love than
they typically see,” said Kelly
Wallace, GMP Director of Digital
& Account Development and a
regular ACCT volunteer. “Our
team does everything with a smile
(even cleaning and laundry), and
it really makes a difference.”
Through busy hands, happy hearts
and two days of service, Greater
Media Philadelphia was able to
give back to the community that
has given them so much.

WDHA-FM and WMTR-AM’s
5th Annual Puptoberfest Draws Huge Crowd
WDHA-FM and WMTR-AM celebrated their annual Puptoberfest at
Horseshoe Lake in Succasunna, NJ, on September 20. The event is
a huge day for listeners and their dogs that included many vendors,
adoptable dogs and live entertainment. This was the fifth year of the event
for WDHA-FM and WMTR-AM, with attendance growing each year.
The event drew more than 5,000 people to the park over the course of
the day. WDHA-FM’s Ultimate Rock Dog contest finals also took place during
the day. The 12 finalists for the contest will be featured in WDHA-FM’s
Ultimate Rock Dog Calendar, which is sold throughout the holiday season and
supports local animal shelters. The Ultimate Rock Dog winner this year was
Tabu, a German shepherd and retired police dog from Wayne, NJ. The
contest was judged by a panel that included record executives, WDHA-AM
on-air talent and the band Pistol Day Parade. After the contest, Pistol
Day Parade took to the stage and performed an acoustic set for those in
attendance.
MAGIC 98.3 FM and WCTC-AM Invite Listeners to
Adopt a Duck to Fight Pediatric Brain Cancer
This fall, New Brunswick
Recreation and the Beez
Foundation brought the
community together to raise funds
for the fight against pediatric
brain cancer. The Raritan River
Festival took place at Boyd Park in
New Brunswick, NJ, and featured
a variety of vendors and activities,
including the foundation’s wellknown Rubber Duck Race on the
Raritan River to close the event.
On Sunday, September 28,
MAGIC 98.3 FM and WCTCAM came together to support the
New Brunswick community and
the Beez Foundation. Promotions
staffers Bob Giaquinto and Justin
Harlow helped emcee the Rubber
Duck Race and draw attention to
the continuing progress of the
Beez Foundation, which raises
money for pediatric brain cancer
research. The Beez Foundation
continued its tradition of raising
the giant egg, filled with rubber
ducks over the river. The ducks
were adopted by individuals and
teams. Once the egg released the
5,000 rubber ducks into the
Delaware and Raritan Canal,
they were on their own to float to
the finish line to see which lucky
ducky would win the grand prize,
an American Express gift card for
$1,000. It was a great and sunny
day filled with good times for a
good cause.
The day included dozens of adoptions and raised money for 11th Hour
Rescue, a local animal shelter.

Healing Garden at Floating Hospital for Children
at Tufts Medical Center Named after Boston’s Country 102.5 FM
Country 102.5 WKLB-FM was
recognized for its ongoing support
of the Floating Hospital for
Children at Tufts Medical Center
in Boston on October 28 when
an outdoor area called the Healing
Garden was officially opened and
named in honor of the station.
“I am so proud of our Country
102.5 team and the work they’ve
done on behalf of Floating Hospital
for Children,” WKLB-FM
Program Director Mike Brophey
said. “The dedication of the
Country 102.5 Healing Garden
represents a wonderful milestone as
we continue our shared mission to
raise money and awareness for our
friends at Floating Hospital and the
children they care for every day.”
The Country 102.5 Healing
Garden is a unique outdoor space
where pediatric patients and their
families can take a break from their
rooms to enjoy the fresh air and
sunshine. In addition, the Country
102.5 Healing Garden will also be
home to country music artists who
visit Floating Hospital to perform
for kids as part of the Country 102.5
Healing Tour, a program created
exclusively for Floating Hospital,
which sustains patients’ spirits and
smiles. The initiative has brought
artists like Carrie Underwood and
Rascal Flatts to interact with the
patients with song and cheer.
Attached to the Ace’s Place
playroom, The Country 102.5
Healing Garden will also give
children the chance to explore
flowers and gardens, while they are
hospitalized for treatment. The
Healing Garden will be a place
where children can feel like kids,
not patients.
Additionally, through WKLB-FM’s
partnership with the Hard Rock
Café and House of Blues in Boston,
which attracts top country artists for
benefit performances, the station
has raised close to $200,000 for
the hospital through that initiative
alone. More recently, a special
show featuring national country
recording artist Hunter Hayes
raised $40,000.

“We are so proud and humbled to
have the Healing Garden named
after Country 102.5,” Brophey
said. “Our logo is on the door.
Funds we helped raise were used to
reconstruct and beautify the area for
patients and their families to enjoy.
It’s a great moment for Greater
Media and Country 102.5.”
Floating Hospital for Children at
Tufts Medical Center has long been
known for many innovations in
pediatric medicine. In fact, the very
beginning of Floating Hospital was
internationally heralded as a giant
step forward in the care of children.
In the late 1800s, the hospital began
its mission as a ship that sailed
Boston Harbor, offering care and
fresh air to the city’s children and
teaching mothers how to participate
in their children’s health care.
WKLB-FM has been striking a
healing chord to benefit young
patients at Floating Hospital for
Children since 2011, helping to
raise more than a million dollars to
support the hospital’s mission. The
station has become part of Floating
Hospital’s extended family, forging
a partnership that brings a host of
benefits to the medical center and
its patients.
Country 102.5 FM helps sustain
Floating Hospital financially
through a variety of music events,
with artists donating their time and
proceeds to support the hospital.
Recently, the station and hospital
joined forces for a new event, Country
Heals: 5 Miles for the Floating Hospital for
Children at Tufts Medical Center.

WMMR-FM Launches YouRock
Social Recap Innovation Project
Thanks to social media, we live
in a world that allows you to be
anywhere and everywhere, all
at once. No ticket or all-access
pass required. 93.3 WMMR-FM’s
Innovation Team saw that as an
opportunity and launched what
is now known as the YouRock
program.
It started with a challenge from
Greater Media Philadelphia
Market Manager John Fullam.
He wanted each station in the
Philadelphia cluster to come up
with innovative ideas that would
engage and connect listeners to
the station and with each other
through the ever-growing world
of digital and social media.
While attending a Pixies concert
at a local venue, WMMR-FM
Innovation Team member Nick
Murphy did what the vast majority
of concertgoers do. He snapped
a picture and tweeted it out to
his followers. The next day, he
received a direct message from
a website that saw his photo and
added it to an album along with
other concertgoers’ pictures. That’s
where the idea of YouRock was
born.
Through the power of social media,
WMMR-FM can now recap every
concert, event, festival, etc., without
leaving the building. Steve Meyers,
Greater Media Director of Digital
Strategy and Innovation Team
member, set out to find a service
that can help collect, record and
curate albums using fan images.
Cue in Livefyre.
Livefyre allows station staff to
tap into the endless number of
photos and videos being shared on
social media platforms. By utilizing
hashtags, keywords and location
searches, the program is able to
effortlessly find and record any
post within the parameters set. An
album is then curated and shared
with the station’s followers to
check out the story that they have
inadvertently contributed to.
WMMR-FM saw this as the perfect
way to say thank you to fans, while
also inviting nonlisteners to the
party.

WMGK-FM’s John DeBella Hosts Concert for Teen Cancer America
Classic Rock 102.9 WMGK-FM
morning man John DeBella had
the honor of hosting a night of
nonstop hits from Roger Daltrey,
the legendary Who frontman,
and Joan Jett with her band, the
Blackhearts, on July 28. The
concert was held at the Verizon
Hall at the Kimmel Center in
Philadelphia, and the goal was to
raise money for the Who’s charity,
Teen Cancer America. Roger and
the folks at Teen Cancer America
delivered compelling speeches on
stage that really brought home the
reason they do what they do—teens
in the U.S. who have cancer have
no place that caters to their agespecific needs and they need one
to help them have a better chance
of a positive outcome.
Joan Jett and Roger Daltrey
turned in awesome performances,
bringing so much energy into the
venue. At one point, Joan even
joined Roger and his band on
stage for a rousing performance
of “Summertime Blues.” Tickets
and VIP packages were offered at
varying price levels, and allowed
for unique up-close-and-
personal opportunities with the
iconic Woodstock alumni. The
cause for such a celebration was
the creation of a Teen Cancer
wing at CHOP (Children’s
Hospital of Philadelphia). The
show raised more than $250,000
for the Teen Cancer America
cause.
WMGK-FM and Teen Cancer
America have been able to build
a great relationship over the past
two years. Roger Daltrey was the
honorary chairperson of the
2013 Classic Rock Art Show, and a
portion of the proceeds from all
art sales that year went to Teen
Cancer America. WMGK-FM
also worked together with TCA
for the first MG5K Walk and Run,
which also raised money for the
cause. WMGK-FM relishes the
opportunity to join forces with
such a great organization, and
hopes that TCA continues to
reach its goal of helping hospitals
meet the specific needs of teens
with cancer, giving them the very
best chance of a positive outcome
both physically and emotionally.

WRAT-FM Joins Jersey Shore Community to Aid Longtime Friend of the Station
By Doug Sjonvall Promotions and Marketing Director, WRAT-FM
Working in radio is awesome. I
love what I do at The Rat here at
the Jersey Shore. I get to award
trips to listeners, and every trip
has a backstory. Recently we gave
away a trip to New Orleans for the
Voodoo Fest, featuring Foo Fighters.
In conversation while making the
arrangements, the winner told
me how timely the trip was. In the
course of one year she got divorced
and lost her job. This trip saved
her year and gave her a muchneeded opportunity to escape.
That is just one example, but it’s
winners like that that make what I
do worthwhile.
Of course we do so much for
the entire community. Raising

and clothes for the needy, and
being a part of committees for
black-tie fundraisers—it’s all very
heartwarming and rewarding.

But here’s what I love best—the
ability to make a visible difference
in someone’s life. Twelve years
ago we coordinated a volleyball
tournament to raise money to help
a little boy in Asbury Park get a
liver transplant; in my first month
here, P.M. Driver Steve Hook and I
spent four days and three nights on
top of a 50-foot billboard to raise
$20,000 to keep a women’s shelter
open.
More recently, we got to help out
a friend. Local restaurateur and
friend of the station Tracie OrsiGodier has been affiliated in some
way with WRAT-FM for 17 years.
Whether she was challenging one of
our jocks to an étouffée cook-off,
providing us with gift certificates
to her Rajin’ Cajun restaurant for
giveaways, or simply hanging out
with the staff, she was always there.
On a personal note, she is one of
the first people I met when I first
started working here 18 years ago. I
was helping out on the late shift one
Sunday night. Not too familiar with
the area and being quite hungry,
I dug through the desk drawers in
the studio looking for a takeout
menu. I found one for Rajin’
Cajun in Belmar, NJ. One of the
items sounded yummy so I called to
order. When a woman answered,
I gave my order and she paused
... “What menu are you looking
at?” she asked, “What color is it?”
Continued on next page
I said, “It’s green.” “We haven’t
had that dish in a long time, that
menu is 5 years old. Hang on, I’ll
bring you something.” Next thing I
knew, she showed up at the station
with a takeout container. When I
offered a tip, she refused, saying
she was the owner and there was
no need to tip. She hung out for
a little bit as we chatted in between
switching CDs from Metallica to
Aerosmith, and a friendship was
born. Through the years we at
the station remained customers
(best Cajun food I’ve ever had).

as qualifier prizes for several New
Orleans trip giveaways. She got to
know the staff well, even publicly
challenging our resident “certified
chef,” southerner Steve Hook,
to an étouffée cook-off. (It never
happened—Steve Hook didn’t want
to risk his ego!)
We fell out of touch for a while. Life
gets in the way ... family, work, etc.
Then I got a call from her husband.
Tracie had been diagnosed with
stage-four cancer and a benefit,
Creole Girl Gala, was being organized
for her on November 2 at one
of the biggest clubs on the Jersey
Shore, The Headliner. The Rat
jumped on board immediately,
donating prizes, running PSAs to
help get the word out and having
the majority of the full-time
personalities attend.
Upon arrival, we were amazed:
The line wrapped around the club!
For $20 at the door, patrons got
live music and a buffet of food
donated by the biggest restaurants
in town. After finally making our
way in, we realized, we can’t move!
When you walked in and saw the
sea of people, a majority of them
familiar faces, all coming together
in support of this one individual,
you couldn’t help getting choked
up. Anyone and everyone in the
community surrounding the station
and beyond was there: business
owners, dignitaries, local residents,
but no other radio station. And as a
local station in the community that’s
a part of all this, it solidifies the
reason why we do what we do. There
are MDA benefits, MS benefits, and
March of Dimes benefits probably
every day—all great charities, all
raising money for research. And
we support as many as we can. But
when it’s hyperlocal like this, seeing
this kind of turnout, seeing where
the money is going, this is why I
enjoy doing what I do.
We play a game called Plunk for
Prizes at our happy hours, street
fairs and festivals to raise money
for charities. People try to drop
a quarter into a shot glass that is
submerged in a fish tank filled with
water. All the money is donated
to a local charity. For Tracie, we
managed to raise almost $1,000
within four events. The day after
I spoke with her husband (and at
that time they still hadn’t finished
counting or collecting all the
donations), they were up to just
over $36,000!
From touching lives like Tracie’s
to a simple thank you and a smile
from a listener picking up a prize
at the station is, again, why I love
what I do.

WCSX-FM’s 2014 Stone Soup Project
Cruises to Finish Line
The name “Stone Soup” is often attributed to a fable about a hungry
soldier who started with nothing more than a pot, some water and a
stone, and with a little help from other hungry folks was able to create
something more substantial that everyone could enjoy.
This year, WCSX-FM along with Advance Auto Parts, Holy Cross
Children’s Services and other sponsors restored a 1970 Firebird, whose
color scheme was voted on by listeners. The project started with a shell
of a Firebird in January and was started up for the first time in August
at Vinsetta Garage restaurant for the big cruise on Woodward.
Raffle tickets were sold at $10 each (8,200 tickets were sold).
Throughout the restoration the Stone Soup Project Firebird made
appearances at sponsor locations and at major events, including the
Detroit Grand Prix, Arts Beats and Eats, and all the summer cruises. On
September 4 Pat Devries from Ira, MI, was selected as the lucky winner.
She won this amazing 1970 Firebird with just one $10 raffle ticket!

WRAT-FM Searches for
2015 Rat Rock Calendar Cover Girl
The search was on again
for 12 lovely ladies to grace
the pages of the 2015 Rat
Rock Girl Calendar and one
ultimately to win the title of
Rat Rock Calendar Cover Girl.
More than 100 girls submitted
photos in hopes of being
selected for the public-voting
round. Judges selected
35 entrants, who then had
their pictures posted on
the WRAT-FM website. For
two weeks listeners were
encouraged to go to ClubRat
at WRAT.com and vote for
their favorites. This helped the
station’s database jump by
600 members in the process.
Once the voting was closed
and the votes were tallied,
the 12 calendar girls were
announced on October 14.
Each girl who made it to the
final 12 had a photo shoot.
Listeners were encouraged
once again to vote for the one
they feel should be crowned
Rat Rock Calendar Cover
Girl. In addition to being on
the cover, the winner also
gets $5,000 and another
professional photo shoot.
Kim, the
2015 Rat
Rock Calendar Girl,
makes an
appearance at
the Jersey
Shore’s
legendary Stone
Pony.
2015 is the third year for the
calendar. The idea originated
from the Rat Rock Girl Search,
which generated so many
great entries that the station
decided that rather than
picking just one girl, why not
12? Layer in multiple sponsors
and someone in-house to
design it (Annie Rodriguez),
and the Promotions Team
has a great giveaway for
events, the station has a
great spokesperson, and the
website statistics see a great
jump.
The calendar was kept
relevant by sending out Rat
Rock Calendar Girl e-blasts
twice a month. The blasts
touched on upcoming station
events, drove people to one
of the girls’ web page at the
Rat website, and included the
sponsors’ links and logos but
always included a picture of
the girl of the month that may
not be in the calendar, nor on
the web page.

2014 Radio 92.9 FM Copley
Concert Series: Bigger and Better
RADIO
92.9 FM brought its Copley Concert Series to life this
summer. The series consisted of three free shows, each taking place
on a Thursday evening in Copley Square Park. Thousands of Boston’s passionate music fans flocked to the park for each night of free
music.
The crowd waits to see Dirty Heads at Copley Square.
July 17 marked the kickoff of the series, headlined by Tennessee
rockers J. Roddy Walston & The Business. The band’s third album,
Essential Tremors, has had great success with the alternative format
with both the first and second singles, “Heavy Bells” and “Take It as It
Comes.” Acclaimed Boston artists Sarah Blacker and Air Traffic Controller, both currently receiving national attention, opened the show.
On August 21 Dirty Heads took the stage. Offering a perfect vibe for
the summer, Dirty Heads have made waves in alternative music. With
multiple top 20 alternative songs and with the reputation of being
a great band to see outdoors on a summer night, the show drew a
record number of attendees to Copley Square Park. Popular Boston
act the Adam Ezra Group warmed up the stage for Dirty Heads.
Vance Joy closes out the night in Copley Square.

Australian singer-songwriter Vance Joy closed the series on September 11. “Riptide,” his current single, has quickly grabbed the attention of tastemakers and consumers, especially after appearing in
a national television commercial for GoPro. The song was glued to
the top of the alternative charts and has now crossed over to AC.
Local acts A.J. Edwards & the List and The Naked Stills opened for
Vance Joy.
Sponsors for the 2014 Copley Concert Series included Dunkin’ Donuts, Massachusetts Air National Guard, Polar Beverages, Matlaw’s,
Heineken, Sports Authority, Xfinity, Boston Magazine, The Boston
Globe, Parkway Cycle Boston, Smart Car, Vivint Solar, Spot Parking
and more. This marks the second year that Radio 92.9 FM presented
free shows at Copley, after finding great success in 2013 when Panic!
at the Disco performed. Radio 92.9 FM is eager to expand the series
even more next year.

COUNTRY 102.5 FM
WKLB-FM’s Rockin’ Country Music Series Continues
with National Country Recording Artist Hunter Hayes
Country 102.5 FM’s Rockin’ Country Music Series made history on
Wednesday, October 1, at House of Blues Boston, where country star
Hunter Hayes took to the stage to headline a very special benefit show
that raised more than $40,000 for Floating Hospital for Children at
Tufts Medical Center. This was a record-setting amount in the series’
four-year history, and benefitted a terrific local cause.
The night began with some very entertaining artist interviews with John
“JW” Willis from the morning show. Hayes and show opener Dean
Alexander hung in the private Foundation Room with JW to talk about
music, life on the road, and playing this show for the kids at Floating
Hospital for Children. Some lucky listeners were treated to a meet and
greet with the artists, including very special meetings between Hayes and
a couple of Floating Hospital patients. The all-ages show that followed
was full of energy from Country 102.5 FM listeners all enjoying an
electric country show in the heart of Boston!

For the second time in under two

Philadelphia Area Doctors Rock Keswick Stage with WMGK-FM
Five bands, each containing at
least one local doctor, rocked the
stage at the Keswick Theatre on
Thursday, October 16, for the 3rd
annual WMGK-FM Rock MD Finals
presented by Cancer Treatment
Centers of America (CTCA) in
Philadelphia. The five finalists
competed to win a $2,000
donation to their charity of choice,
free recording time at Philly Sound
Studios, and the illustrious title,
Rock MD Champion.
Classic Rock 102.9 WMGKFM’s Andre Gardner hosted the
festivities and a panel of three
celebrity judges scored each band
on three different criteria. The
band with the highest score on
the judges’ scorecards was deemed
Rock MD Champion. The five
finalists played to an enthusiastic
crowd and a panel of three celebrity
musician judges (drummer David
Uosikkinen of the bands The
Hooters & In the Pocket; Dave
Kinchen, reporter, Fox 29 News;
and Philly’s blues rock legend
Tommy Conwell) at the Keswick
Theatre in Glenside, PA.
The Rock MD competition was
created to unite like-minded
physicians who share the belief that
the power of music can uplift and
inspire, even in the most difficult
circumstances.
“There are several great parallels
between music and medicine,
including the ongoing desire to
nurture a skill, push yourself to
be better, and work with a team in
creative pursuits—whether on a new
song or management of a complex
case,” said Dr. Steve Standiford,
a pianist and Chief of Staff and
Surgery at CTCA in Philadelphia.
“During the three years that CTCA
and WMGK have partnered on the
Rock MD competition, it has become
clear that Philadelphia is not only
a hub for health care innovation,
it is home to many physicians with
incredible talents beyond the exam
room and hospital.”
WMGK-FM and CTCA put the
following call out to doctors in the
tristate area: “If you’re a doctor
and you play an instrument or if
you’re in a band, we want to hear
your music and we want you to
enter the WMGK and Cancer
Treatment Centers of America
Rock MD competition.” After
receiving scores of online and
mail-in entries, WMGK-FM and
CTCA staff members narrowed the
submissions to five finalists.
In addition to hearing the roar
of the crowd on October 16,
the bands also heard their voices
and their music in commercials
running on WMGK-FM. After
being selected as a finalist, a doctor
from each band was able to record
a commercial featuring their
band’s music as well as information
about the Rock MD Finals event at
Keswick Theatre.
Rightback, headed by Dr. Jeremy
Jaffe, played an awesome set and
emerged victorious. The band
donated their $2,000 winnings
to two charities, Juvenile Diabetes
Research Foundation and
American Heart Association.

all of their biggest hits.

culture.
A main focus for Riff2 is
supporting local musicians,
artists and products. Riff2’s
first major event took place
in November 2013 when they
teamed up with former Detroit
Lion Nate Burleson to help
support his Detroit-based
clothing line LionBlood.
Burleson hosted an autograph
signing at Bonnie & Clyde,
a local boutique, for Small
Business Saturday, and Riff2
hooked up a listener with a free
LionBlood T-shirt.
In 2014 Riff2 gained even more
exposure locally and across
the nation by covering some
of the biggest music festivals
around. The station was an
official partner for Detroit’s
Movement Electronic Music Festival on
Memorial Day weekend, where
they gave listeners the chance to
win tickets, and the Riff2 logo
was featured in the weekend
guide and on the Movement
banner in front of more than
107,000 people. The station
was also granted access to cover
the festival—shooting photos
and hosting interviews with the
performers. But Movement was
just the beginning. In June
some of the Riff2 staff traveled
to Manchester, TN, to cover the
Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, and
later that month they hooked up
listeners with tickets to the Electric

Things didn’t slow down during
July. The station covered the
Common Ground Festival in Lansing,

and wrapped up the summer in
August at Perry Farrell’s annual
Lollapalooza festival in Chicago. The
final summer hurrah for Riff2 was
hooking up another lucky listener
with tickets to Chicago’s Riot Fest and
Carnival.
After a busy summer, Riff2 went
a step further with the addition of
two local talk shows. NerdRadio
and The Reveal began in October.
NerdRadio is hosted by Riff2 DJs
Chuck Bean and Jefferson Moore
every Wednesday night; they talk
about anything and everything
nerd related—from comic books
and video games to sci-fi and
more! They’ve already managed
to cover one of Detroit’s biggest
Comic-Cons and are rapidly gaining
listeners. The Reveal takes talk
radio in another direction on
Thursday nights with WRIF-FM’s
midday host Anne Carlini and
weekend/Riff2 DJ Jade Springart.
The ladies meet each week to
give their views and opinions on
everything from music news and
celebrity gossip to pop culture and
sports.
2014 was a great year for WRIF’s
HD2 station, and with HD radio
becoming standard in new cars, the
staff is very excited to see what 2015
will have in store. Riff2 is quickly
becoming Detroit’s Number 1

MAGIC 106.7 FM Supports Breast Cancer

MAGIC 106.7 FM Helps Raise Awareness
for Suicide Prevention
On Sunday, October 5, MAGIC 106.7 FM’s Candy O’Terry
and Kim Khazei from 7News hosted the 22nd annual Making
Strides Against Breast Cancer walk at Boston’s Hatch Shell.
The attendance this year was amazing, with more than 40,000
walkers; an estimated $3 million was raised in a single day to
benefit the American Cancer Society.
Morning Magic’s David O’Leary is chair of the Boston chapter
of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. He hosted
one of the seven area walks to raise awareness about suicide
prevention and mental health issues. These events, held in
Boston during October, brought together 2,500 walkers and
raised $300,000 to benefit this very worthy cause.

WMMR-FM’s Preston & Steve’s Zombie Wake-up Call Is the Real Deal
Halloween brings goblins and
ghouls, hayrides and haunted
houses. Millions of people
each year voluntarily get scared
out of their wits for the thrill
and excitement of the holiday.
At least they have some control
over the matter, right? After
all, they’re choosing to be
frightened. What would be
scarier? Maybe an unexpected
nightmare where you lack the
power to fight back or run?
What about waking up from
that deep sleep and being
fooled into thinking those
monsters under your bed are
real?
To test the hypothesis, on
October 2, 93.3 WMMRFM joined forces with Terror
behind the Walls at Eastern State
Penitentiary, a top-ranked
haunted attraction situated
in a real abandoned prison
in Philadelphia that many
believe to be haunted. (If you
listen closely, you can hear Al
Capone enjoying a sandwich.
Capone’s cell reportedly
boasted oriental rugs, fine
furniture and a cabinet radio.)
WMMR-FM’s The Preston and
Steve Show solicited listeners
to nominate their oblivious
friends, family members
or significant others to be
awakened by zombie prisoners
(actors from Eastern State
Penitentiary) live on the air.
While waking “anti-morning
people” in the past with bands
playing loud instruments or
even with beautiful women,
Preston and Steve’s Zombie Wake-up Call
was the most intense.
above, WMMR-FM’s Preston and Steve Show teamed up with actors from
Terror behind the Walls at Philadelphia’s Eastern State Penitentiary,
a popular haunted house attraction, to awaken unsuspecting sleepyheads
with zombies at their bedside!
The initial annoyance of being
awakened was followed by the
horror of not knowing what
was happening or what was real.
Some froze, others tried to run
to freedom, while one poor
soul was handcuffed to a zombie
prisoner. There was no time to
think or do anything, not even
to change clothes or put on
clothes! Eventually, the victims
realized that their “friends” had
planned for this intrusion. A
sick joke? Maybe. But it was also
very entertaining for the entire
Delaware Valley.

LOOK WHAT’S HAPPENING at BEN-FM
“10 on BEN from NBC 10”:
95.7 FM Teams Up with NBC’s
Philly Affiliate
In early October, the local
marketing director for WCAU
(NBC 10), the local NBC
affiliate, tasked the local radio
stations of Philadelphia to come
up with a unique program to
help their 4 P.M. newscast
become Number 1 during
November. A creative idea and
brainstorming meeting with
95.7 BEN-FM PD Chuck
Damico, APD/Personality Rich
DeSisto, LSM Jaime Frankel,
GSM Jim Brown, Promotion
Director Mark Vizza and a
number of BEN-FM players
focused on the client’s task
and developed a unique Idea
… a 3 P.M. “takeover” hour
of 95.7 BEN-FM every day in
November, called “10 on BEN
from NBC 10. Count on it!”
Every weekday at 3 P.M., a
different NBC 10 anchor’s
voice launched the sweep of 10
songs in a row. Specific imaging
was then placed multiple times
during the sweep of music,
reinforcing the partnership
of BEN-FM “Playing Anything
We Feel Like” and 20 minutes
of nonstop news at 4 P.M. from
NBC 10. Count on it! The sweep
of music then concluded with a
90-second NBC 10 News update
by incorporating the personality of
BEN-FM’s Rich DeSisto and the
headlines from NBC 10’s Renee
Chenault-Fattah. There’s no more
live and local branding than that!
The client loved the idea, which
led to the ad agency’s purchase
of the program along with an
NBC buy … a great win for both
Programming and Sales!

magazine and BEN-FM have been
partnering on events for a few
years and have had much success
in cobranding to reach a huge
number of people in the area.
Ladies Night at the Design Home is one
of Philadelphia magazine’s signature
events, and Marilyn always loves
being a part of it.
Catered by Di Bruno Brothers,
and featuring mixology
demonstrations and exclusive
prizes and giveaways throughout
the evening, Ladies Night was a huge
success. The 7,450-square-foot
home features state-of-the-art
amenities, a massive eat-in
kitchen, sauna, nine bathrooms,
fully equipped gym, an elevator
and a third-floor “kids room,”
plus so much more. The Design
Home opened its doors to the
public with all proceeds going to

Philadelphia area that prepares
and delivers free, nourishing
meals to neighbors battling
serious illnesses such as cancer,
HIV/AIDS, diabetes and kidney
disease. To each of its thousands
of recipients MANNA delivers
three meals a day, seven days a
week, and provides hope and
nourishment to the Greater
Philadelphia area and southern

BEN-FM Takes the Show on the Road
Over the past few months
BEN-FM has been barraging
its listeners with Disney cruise
vacations, trips to Jamaica
as well as trips to Universal
Orlando Resort, and everybody,
including the jocks, has been
reaping the benefits. For
each giveaway, the station had
pre-promoted by doing live
broadcasts on-location from the
resort or cruise ship.
Production Director/On-Air
Host Kristen Herrmann spent
four days in beautiful Runaway
Bay, Jamaica, riding horses by
the ocean, climbing a waterfall,
zip-lining, bobsledding through
the rain forest, and eating
amazing local food. The only
thing she didn’t do was rest!
Morning Show Host Marilyn
Russell cruised for four days
aboard the Disney Dream as it headed
to Disney’s private island, Castaway
Cay, before making a stop at the
Bahamas. While on the ship,
Marilyn took full advantage of their
luxury spas, incredible food and
Broadway-style Disney shows like
The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast.
She also relaxed in the adults-only
pool, and of course let herself
be a kid again at the character
meet-and-greets. Only a few days
after her return, Marilyn hopped
back on a plane and headed back
to Florida for a stay at Universal
Orlando Resort to experience
the new Diagon Alley at the
Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
Of course Marilyn purchased an
interactive wand and lived out
her secret dreams of wizardry
while she experienced the hyperrealistic world of Harry Potter that
Universal Orlando Resort has
created.
But these trips weren’t all play,
Marilyn and Kristen both worked
hard to ensure that the BEN-FM
listeners experienced through their
broadcasts, interviews, pictures
and videos, what they were able
to experience in person while on
their trips. “It’s a tough job, but
somebody’s gotta do it … and I
can’t wait to do it again and again!”
Marilyn said.

WLNK-FM: Inside Look at the Creation of a Successful Promotion
By Jessica RoBards
Executive Assistant
Greater Media Charlotte
How Do We Get It?
The Promotions and
Programming Team at 107.9
FM The LINK meets every
Tuesday—an eclectic bunch
of creative people who are
almost like family.
WLNK-FM’s Kelly McKay with
friends at Beaches Negril in Jamaica
How Do We Do It?
We brainstorm every week,
focusing mainly on our
listeners and trying to figure
out what they want. What do
they want? We pitch ideas
every week just to come back
and do it all over again. We
learn by trial and error.
Program directors speak up
with numbers and ratings.
Promotions coordinators talk
about contesting statistics.
Interactive interjects with
email open rates, click-through
numbers, page views and
social media stats. Marketing
directors spout new ideas.
And account executives
confirm what their clients
want from it all. But something
that has come back as
successful almost every time is
a vacation!
A Beaches Negril concierge reads a
bedtime story to WLNK-FM’s Kelly
McKay.
Next step, how do we get it?
Promotions directors start
by just making cold contacts,
sometimes landing on a good
contact who wants to work
with us, in the same way
that we want to work with
them. Now we have found a
reliable contact and business—
Sandals, Beaches and Clear
Results Marketing. We work
on calendars and available
promotion dates, and even
go as far as offering to send
our talent on these luxury
vacations to further translate
a “been there, done that”
experience to our listeners.
This strategy works, and it’s a
direct connection from host to
listener, who have such an indepth relationship with each
other.
Finding a Theme
WLNK-FM’s Kelly McKay snorkles in
the clear waters of Jamaica.
After we received
confirmation about the trip
giveaway, we brainstormed
more on the value of what we
were giving them versus the
value of what they were giving
us. The client was actually
providing us three trips to
multiple islands. One team
member suggested Island
Hopping with The Link as a
theme for the multiple trips.
Creating Digital Platform
From there, we worked with
the client to provide the digital
platform that is now our
internal standard. We make
these our P1 contest for these
weeks, including a custom
landing page before the entry
page that can include custom
elements from the client and
a luxury feeling for the listener
entering. We go even further
to provide a live and on-site
page that features in-depth
host experiences with photo
galleries, interviews with
clients and guests, and videos.
They are all fun, inviting,
and paint the picture for the
vacation, like no other radio
station can do. The client has
even been quoted as saying,
“No other radio stations do it
like you do!”
Our online elements, along
with the live, on-air experience,
end up being a success in
ratings, revenue and client
relationship—so much so that
the client has come back to us
three years in a row with talk
about next year as well.

100.1 WJRZ-FM rocked the Southern Ocean County Chamber

chowder than with dressing up as your FAVORITE superhero, or
as the locals would say “souper hero!” WJRZ-FM held a costume
contest with the grand-prize winner scoring a family four-pack
of tickets to Six Flags Fright Fest in Jackson, NJ. But it wasn’t
all about the costumes: The focus of the day was the 16 local
restaurants that were competing to become the Chowderfest
Champion for 2014! All day, the restaurants sampled their best
Manhattan and New England clam chowder to a crowd of more
than 12,000!

Attendees were able to meet
the MGK air staff and rock
out to MGK’s house band,

delicious offerings from
food trucks as well as cold
beers from the outdoor bar.
Additional activities included
free games for children and
adults, as well as fire and
rescue demonstrations from
Upper Salford Volunteer
Fire Company, including
opportunities for children and
adults to use the fire hose and
don firefighter gear.
Two of the day’s main
attractions were Morning
Man John DeBella’s Pumpkin

com as well as on the day of
the event.
A desire to improve and
add to this year’s Wife Carry
actually spawned the creation
of the Big Bad Bonfire. DeBella
asked listeners what he could
do to make this year’s Wife
Carry “au-taw-some,” or an
awesome, autumn celebration.
Listeners suggested a bonfire.
Upon hearing that suggestion,
DeBella immediately began
searching for a location,
assistance from a local fire
company, and additional
entertainment and activities
to add to the experience. Rick
Buckman, president of Spring
Mountain Adventures, called
the show and volunteered
Spring Mountain as the
location. DeBella called Upper
Salford Fire Company, and
they agreed to assist in the
building, maintenance and
extinguishing of the bonfire.
Although the event was free,
MGK accepted donations
using the “firefighter boot,”
with 100 percent of the
donations going to Upper
Salford Fire Company.
Because it was the event’s
fledgling year, MGK and all
those involved in the planning
and execution of the bonfire
expected about 500 people
to attend. However, by the end
of the first hour, attendance
was estimated at more than
2,000. The event was deemed
“sold out,” and word went
out over the MGK airways
that if you were not already
in attendance, you would
have to turn back, because
Spring Mountain had reached
capacity. The success of the
event has already spawned
discussion and planning for
2015, making the Big Bad
Bonfire a new MGK yearly fall
tradition!

Christmas Music Comes Early
on Detroit’s Oldies 94.7 HD2
On Friday, October 31, at
5 P.M. Detroit’s Oldies 94.7
HD2 kicked off the holiday
season a little early by playing
Christmas music. The first
song was “It’s Beginning to
Look a Lot like Christmas”
by Perry Como. Christmas
music continued throughout
the holiday season. Listeners
heard their favorite Christmas
songs like Bobby Helms’
“Jingle Bell Rock,” Bing
Crosby’s “White Christmas,”
Burl Ives’ “Holly Jolly
Christmas,” Nat King Cole’s
“The Christmas Song” and
Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ around
the Christmas Tree.” Listeners
had three ways to listen: tune
in their HD radio to 94.7 HD2,
stream online at WCSX.com,
or listen on their mobile device
via the WCSX-FM app.

“We interrupted our normally

and The Beach Boys to bring
Michigan the best Christmas
music experience over
several modern platforms,”
said Detroit Oldies 94.7

in the metro Detroit area we

WRIF-FM’s Sin City Takeover
Another Huge Success
When fall hits Detroit,
WRIF-FM once again begins
the search for a group of
listeners who think they are
ready to invade Las Vegas
with the entire Riff Crew!
This year was the 5th annual
Sin City Takeover. For four
weeks beginning September
11, listeners had their shot
every day to head off to Las
Vegas with air personalities
Dave & Chuck the Freak,
Anne Carlini, Meltdown and
Screamin’ Scott. This year’s
trip included three nights
at Bally’s along with tickets
to the Jubilee showgirl
production and the chance
to see Five Finger Death
Punch and Volbeat perform
in Las Vegas. Plus each
winner was able to double
down, as they also scored
tickets to see Five Finger
and Volbeat again in Detroit
at WRIF-FM’s Rocktober
Throwdown. And once in
Vegas, the listeners had the
chance to hang out with
the WRIF-FM personalities
as they did their respective
shows, from morning
through evening, live from
Bally’s.
This annual promotion
uses several elements to
make it a strong ratingsdriving promotion on the
air along with providing
several sales opportunities
for the company. For more
than five weeks, on-air
promotional announcements
drive listeners to tune in
for their chances to win,
while also directing them
to www.wrif.com for details
and for the opportunity to
join the WRIF Cybercrew.
Cybercrew members have
the advantage of seeing
the hour each day that the
daily giveaway happens.
Additionally, the station
worked with MJR Theaters
to award a trip through an
onsite registry. All of these
elements added up to yet
another successful Sin City
Takeover, with listeners
already asking, When will we
have the chance to win next
year?

retired... but reinspired
Some parting words from
Tony Baglio, Creative Services Director, Greater Media Boston
By the time you read this, I will have left Greater Media Boston, after 24 years, eight months and five days,
but who’s counting. Technically, I’ve retired. In reality, I’ve merely turned the page, eagerly anticipating life’s
next chapter.
I’ve spent over 40 years in broadcasting, most of that time in Boston radio. Over the years, I’ve worked with
some great people, including one of the best production guys in the business, Bob Spicer, who convinced
me to join him at MAGIC 106.7 FM, ending my eight-year hiatus from radio, during which I was a full-time
freelancer and musician. It was the best decision I ever made.
I’ve worked in all media, but radio has always been—in my opinion—the most creative medium, especially
from an advertising standpoint. My mantra has always been: The most effective radio advertising entertains AND informs. You don’t write a piece of copy; you craft it. And even though I’m humbled to have
won my share of industry awards, the best reward has always been seeing a spot or campaign work for a
client. Greater Media Chairman and CEO Peter Smyth (whom I’ve known since his first day in radio!) always
provided us with the best tools and technology available to help us create informative and entertaining
advertising. I know Greater Media Boston VP/Market Manager Rob Williams will continue the trend!
Tony Baglio
What’s next? Well, after some R&R (relaxing and recharging) in New Orleans with my wife, Roseanne, I plan
to aggressively pursue freelance copywriting, voiceover, and audio production projects. I’m really looking
forward to the new challenges! To my Greater Media family, past and present, I wish you well. To Greater
Media Boston … thanks for a great run. And … some great memories!
