With Florida’s recent financial education mandate for high school seniors to learn personal finance, demand for Junior Achievement’s (JA) programming has been unprecedented. Already the twelfth largest JA franchise in the United States, JA of Tampa Bay experienced a 2.07% student enrollment increase during the past school year. Demand for JA’s programming is showing no signs of slowing in the near future. As our local economy, population and need for qualified workers increase, so does the need for the JA programs. Junior Achievement efficiently and effectively builds the bridge between business and education. Our volunteers engage students in lessons related to jobs, personal finance and free enterprise – the engine that drives our economy. During the 2014/2015 school year, 9,507 volunteers engaged students in nearly one (1) million hours of activity-based lessons. These interactions enabled young people to have unique experiences to help them: • • • • Realize what drives economic success, so they can perpetuate it in the future Plan for the vast job opportunities being created and know how to compete for them Acquire the skills necessary to manage personal finances for their short and long term benefit Experience by example how the soft skills are critical to achieving success This past school year, 94,579 Tampa Bay area students from all grade levels and every demographic imaginable, benefitted from you, thousands of teachers, volunteers and funders, thank you! Sincerely, Judy Genshaft 2014-15 Chair of the Board Richard George President Junior Achievement of Tampa Bay Annual Report 2014-2015 3 Impact by the Numbers 2014-2015 OPERATIONS AND REACH Geographic Footprint Tampa Bay Volunteers 9,507 Total Students Served 94,579 Elementary Students Served 70,093 Middle School Students Served 12,316 High School Students Served 12,170 Classes Taught 4,772 Instructional Contact Hours 911,188 About Junior Achievement of Tampa Bay, Inc. Founded in 1965, Junior Achievement of Tampa Bay serves 12 counties including the entire Tampa Bay Area. Junior Achievement is a volunteer driven, non-profit organization. This year more than 3,100 business professionals, parents, retirees and college students will enter our schools to teach Junior Achievement programs. These volunteers use their personal experiences to make the Junior Achievement curricula practical and realistic. Providing children with positive adult role models, who illustrate ways to build self-confidence, develop skills and find avenues of success in our free enterprise system, is a hallmark of Junior Achievement. Last academic year, JA of Tampa Bay inspired 94,579 students in our 12 county reach. Our success through the support of our investors, is due to our JA volunteers, who donated 911,188 instructional contact hours this past year. 4 Junior Achievement of Tampa Bay Annual Report 2014-2015 FINANCIAL STATEMENT OF OPERATIONS Junior Achievement of Tampa Bay, Inc 2014-2015 REVENUES TOTALS % OF TOTALS Corporations $275,164 8% Individuals $251,152 8% Foundations $333,718 10% Government Funding $612,140 19% Special Event Revenue $229,684 7% Contributions Derived – Special Events $1,540,235 47% Less Direct Costs – Special Events ($581,391) -18% Program Revenue $359,578 11% Interest, In-kind and Other $80,361 2% Unrealized Gains (losses) on Investments (8,596) 0% $210,793 6% Net Assets Released from Restrictions TOTAL REVENUE $3,302,838 EXPENSES TOTALS % OF TOTALS $2,933,789 87% Fundraising Expenses $253,338 8% Management and General Administrative $167,769 5% Program Expenses Total Operating Expenses $3,354,896 Junior Achievement of Tampa Bay Annual Report 2014-2015 5 JA Finance Park Virtual The JA Finance Park Virtual program provides high school students with an effective and innovative way to learn money management and financial decision-making skills. At the end of this program, students put into practice what they have learned about economic options and the principles of budgeting. Assisted by their teachers and trained volunteers, they have the opportunity to actually develop and commit to a personal budget. Nearly 90% of educators surveyed believe students should be required to take a financial education course or pass a financial literacy test before they graduate. Unfortunately, fewer than 20% of teachers feel they have skills or knowledge to teach this information. - National survey of K-12 teachers, Journal for Financial Counseling and Planning education, 2009 Junior Achievement of Tampa Bay Annual Report 2014-2015 6 What is JA BizTown? Imagine a city where young consumers rush to the bank to deposit their paychecks. Sales clerks create merchandise displays and reporters interview local business leaders to get the most up-to-date story. Across the way, the restaurant prepares for the lunch hour and the mayor meets with business managers to get an understanding of current economic trends. This could be any city in the country, but it is this image that perfectly describes a day at Pam and Les Muma JA BizTown. “JA BizTown is a quality experience for our kids. I am so impressed with the variety of jobs and businesses represented. My daughter has been anticipating this for weeks, including picking out her outfit and researching her job. I have learned from being a part of it too! The place buzzed with excitement from the moment everyone arrived. What a fantastic experience.” JA BizTown parent Bill Poe Family JA Center Home of Muma JA BizTown 13707 N. 22nd Street ∙ Tampa, FL 33613 (813) 631-1410 Junior Achievement of Tampa Bay Annual Report 2014-2015 7 STEM TEC (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) This program, recognized internationally for innovation, has continued to grow, and highlights the depth of Junior Achievement programming while providing hands-on experiential learning. JA Entrepreneurial Academy JA Entrepreneurial Academy prepares students for the workforce by teaching the skills and values they will need to make important education and career choices. 8 Tournament Chair and Board Member Mike Robertson presents the first Annual Michael D.
