history
“Garden of Manitoba” is often used to describe the
region between the Souris River and the Turtle Mountains
in which Boissevain is located. Eons ago, as the Lake
Souris glacier retreated northward it left behind a sand
loam which is well suited for farming.
Human occupation of this region goes back 10,000
years. In more recent centuries, the Dakota and
Assiniboine First Nations have called this area home.
La Verendrye was the first European explorer to enter the
region. He was followed in 1806 by Alexander Henry.
Between 1872 and 1874 the Boundary Commission
marked the international boundary. They followed a trail
that had originally been a native travel route and Metis
bison hunting track. The Boundary Commissioners were
followed by a trickle of settlers coming west from Ontario
who were looking for good land, good water and wood.
In 1881 the first of several parties from Britain arrived in
the area, not waiting for the railroad which was slowly
extended to Boissevain by 1885.
boissevain.ca
The community known as Boissevain was originally
called Cherry Creek. The name was changed in 1889 in
honour of the Dutch financier Adolphe Boissevain. It was
Boissevain’s banking firm that introduced CPR shares
for sale in Europe to increase the speed of the building
of the railway. The motto on the Boissevain family crest
has now adopted by the town. It reads “No fear of the
future nor regrets of the past”.
6
The rural area around Boissevain is called Morton
Municipality. It took its name from an early settler,
George Morton. He was an energetic entrepreneur who
built a store and grain warehouse in the area, these
were only two of his many business ventures.
No fear of the future,
no regrets of the past.
welcome
Boissevain is a community alive with
vibrancy and spirit. Locals are proud of
their past and its people, and this is amply
demonstrated by the town’s “Outdoor Art
Gallery”, floral displays, arts park, museums
and celebrations.
There is an abundance of recreational
activites offered in the area. The Turtle
Mountain Provincial Park is a haven for
outdoor enthusiasts. Camping, swimming,
biking and fishing at one of the park’s
many lakes are popular recreational
choices. In winter there are snowmobile
trails, cross-country ski trails, toboggan runs
and an outdoor skating area.
On the U.S. and Canadian border, in
a symbol of friendship, lies a “One of a
Kind” International Peace Garden. Water
fountains and dazzling displays of over
150,000 flowers splash across the grounds
of the Formal Garden’s terraced walkways.
Just a few minutes to the west is
Whitewater Lake, a globally significant
Important Bird Area providing habitat for
over 110 species of birds.
For those who are visiting ... enjoy!
For those who have made the
Boissevain area your home ...
welcome!

see our beauty
Boissevain has reaped rewards through
participating in the prestigious Communities
in Bloom competition. The community has
received the honour of being named a
winner at both national and international
levels over 17 years of involvement. It
has been rewarding for Boissevain to see
community members take pride in their
yards, gardens and the town.
All sectors of the community – public,
private and industrial – have brought
changes to improve upon gardening,
landscaping, tidiness and volunteerism.
Citizens have dedicated hours of planting,
weeding and watering all in pursuit of
achieving Boissevain’s beautification goals.
This hard work has flourished because of
many green thumbs and big imaginations.
Noteworthy of special mention are the
town’s hanging baskets numbering over 250
throughout the community and two large
petunia trees.
Communities in Bloom is more than
flowers. In particular, the efforts of the
Boissevain Recycling Committee in their
work to create a better environment, has
won many points and individual awards
with Communities in Bloom.
Come and visit Boissevain, as it continues
its beautification journey. It is a trip well
worth it.
ARTS PARK
One very important piece of Boissevain’s
beautification journey has been the Arts Park. An
ordinary empty lot in the heart of the community
was transformed into an oasis of colour and
beauty. Walk along the brick pathways or take a
moment to smell the roses while sitting under the
shade of the large gazebo. The Arts Park is a true
testament to what can happen when volunteers
get together with an idea and hands ready to
work. Volunteers have maintained and improved
upon the garden as it is continually developing.
Communities in bloom
2013 - Boissevain receives
5 bloom rating in

Boissevain also recognized for
Community Dedication to Beautification.
2006 - Winner of the Individual World Challenge
2003 - Winner of the International Challenge
1999 - Winner of the National Challenge

TOMMY TURTLE
Tommy Turtle, 8.5 meter (28 ft) tall, 4.5 tonne (10,000
lb) stands proud watching over Boissevain. He is the
town’s mascot, its international representative, its
biggest fan.
Forty years ago, on Thursday, July 18, 1974, Tommy was placed onto his home at the corner of
Mountain Street and #10 Highway, where he has
etched himself into Boissevain’s past, present and
future. The turtle was erected as a symbolic icon for
the community and the historic summer Canadian
Turtle Derby. In 1972, Boissevain held its first annual
Turtle Derby, and spectators enjoyed the excitement generated by the festivities surrounding the
turtle racing competitions. The growing enthusiasm
of turtle racing became a major tourism attraction
for Boissevain. However, in 2001 the community
ended the Turtle Derby, but “Tommy” still warmly
greets visitors.
This summer the community will
celebrate Tommy’s 40th birthday.

Historical Tour
Heritage Tree
Tour a replica of a one
room log cabin that Irvin Goodon lived in as
a youth with his family
in the 1920s. Show your
kids what life was like
without electricity, TV,
running water, and how
families made do in
small spaces. Located
next to Turtle statue.
A self-guided walking tour
features some of the distinctive heritage buildings
in Boissevain including
St. Paul’s United Church,
which was built from local
fieldstone in 1893 in the
Gothic Revival style. Booklets to guide you on the
tour are available at the
Boissevain Visitors Centre.
Located behind the Ag Office, stands a piece
of pioneer heritage. In the 1800s this site was
once the residence of William Venables, and it
is believed the tree at the back of the lot had
been planted from a willow stick, which had
served as a walking stick during a trip back to
town from his homestead. Tree measurements:
Height - 16m (52 ft tall),
Crown Spread - 23m (76 ft)
Diameter at breast height - 3m (9.5 ft)
Circumference - 7.5m (24.5 ft)

art is big in Boissevain
Come and see a visual testament
to the history of the area on the
outdoor art gallery throughout
Boissevain. The project started in
1992 with three murals and today
17 murals narrate the story of our
community’s history in living colour.
Over the years the murals are
restored to keep them fresh and
clean, but the original artist’s
theme remains. Anne Boychuk
has refurbished seven of the
murals in recent years. Self-guided
maps and guided mural tours are
available at the Boissevain Visitor
Center.
Green Meadows Farm
By Hubert Theroux, 1992
Redone 2013 at new location
86’w X 18’h
Location: Boissevain Fire Hall
Green Meadows farm known locally as the home of Manitoba’s
former Lieutenant Governor Errick
F. Willis (1960-65). Prize Hereford
cattle were raised here. The old
fashioned farm scene is one of the
artist’s specialties.
The Red Coats
By Hubert Theroux
1996 / redone 2010
31 1/2’w X 13 1/2’h
Location: Red Coat Inn
Seated at his grandfather’s feet,
10-year-old Dominick French hears
of the adventures experienced by
his great-grandfather, Commissioner George Arthur French, as he led
the first troop of North West Mounted Police across Western Canada
in 1874. Dom was so fascinated by
the stories he became a member
of the RCMP himself and is pictured
in the mural.
Schools Out
By Hubert Theroux 2000
36’h X 18’h
Location: Boissevain School
This one room schoolhouse is representative of many that dotted
the countryside. This brings back
memories of the times when many
of us walked to school, lunch pail in
one hand and books in the other.
10
Royal Canadian Legion
Boissevain Branch #10
First painted by Ken McEwan
1995 / redone 2011
31’w X 15’h
Location: Legion Hall
This mural is a tribute to those who
gave their lives in both World Wars
and Korea as well as the veterans
who returned.
A Tribute to Pioneer Men and Women
By Ernie Bereti 1993
40’w X 10’h
Location: Beckoning Hills Museum
Here on the Tripp farm is seen the era
of progress in agriculture from the “sod
busting” days. Steam engines do the
heavy work and substantial buildings
replace shanties that once dotted the
prairies.
Boundary Commission/NWMP Trail
By Gus Froese 1999
64’w X 12’h
Location: Boissevain & Morton Library
This mural shows the evolution of the
historic trail which runs parallel to the
US boundary. Originally indented into
the prairie sod by buffalo, it became
more distinct with the travel of natives,
explorers and settlers. It was a route for
the survey crews and the North West
Mounted Police in 1874.
A Salute to Boissevain’s
Medical Profession
First painted By Ken McEwan
1997 / redone 2009
27’w X 10’h
Location: Former Medical Clinic
Doctors, nurses, veterinarians, dentists
and midwives are all paid tribute in
this mural. This mural is testament to
the dedication and professionalism
of the caretakers of Boissevain and
Morton. From Dr. F.V. Bird with 62 years
of service to Nurse Halladay who ran a
nursing home in the community.
Ethnic Mosaic
By Stephen Jackson
1994 / redone 2010
4 panels, 4’w X 12’h
Location: Royal Bank
Here the artist has created a colorful
patchwork quilt with each patch revealing something of the ethnic heritage of the community with scenes
of the workplace and samples of
traditional women’s needlework.
Many are copies of special crafts
which were brought to this country
by new settlers or made by native
women.
Main Street Saturday Night
By Jim Jordan 1993
10’w X 10’h
Location: Hazlewood Drug Store
Remember Saturday nights in
the 1950’s when the whole family
packed into the car and went to
town to shop and socialize? Young
people flocked to the theatre to
see the weekly show, while mom
and dad got caught up on the
latest news (or gossip).
General Store
By Brian Romagnoli 1998
32’w X 11’h
Location: It Makes Cents
The mural depicts the George King
“General Store” circa 1922, that was
located in the current library building.
The mural is a tribute to all general
stores which were the centre of each
rural community.
Bushing in the Turtle Mountains
By Hubert Theroux 1995
49’w X 13’h
Location: Boundary Co-op Hardware
In the days when wood was the only
fuel to keep homes cozy against winter’s
icy blast, keeping up a constant supply
was an ongoing task participated in by
all the family members with occasional
help from neighbours.
Morton Sawmill
By Gus Froese
1994 / redone 2009
25’w X 9’h
Location: The Hand Crafter
The sawmill, built in 1879 at Lake
Max in the Turtle Mountains, was
purchased in 1883 by George Morton, an entrepreneur who planned
a large scale dairy farm and
cheese factory. The municipality
was named after him in 1890 and
he presided at the first election.
Romance of the Railroad
By Stephen Jackson 1992
69’w X 14’h
Location: Romance Railway Park
This locomotive arrived in Cherry
Creek around 1886 as a result of
Adolphe Boissevain selling shares in
Europe to raise funds. Later the town
was renamed in his honor. A teenager, Chris Musgrove saw it arrive
and also witnessed the departure
of the last passenger train in 1958.
Manitoba Pool Elevator
By Stephen Jackson and
Gus Froese 1995
49’w X 60’h
Location: On elevator at corner of
Stephen Street and South Railway
The left-hand side of the mural is a
cutaway in the silhouette of Mother
Earth revealing the interior workings
of an elevator. At the bottom, lifesized wagons are going up the
ramp into the cleaning bin.
Pioneer Kitchen
By Carol Ramsay 1994
32’w X 7’h
Location: Turtle Mountain Appliances
The artist’s respect for pioneer women is
reflected in her depiction of the “heart of
the home” where so many of the homemaker’s handmade products are on
display and the family gathers in the lamplight for their various evening activities.
Reflections of Whitewater Lake
By Hubert Theroux 1994
60’w X 12’h

WHITEWATER LAKE – CANADIAN IMPORTANT BIRD AREA
The International Adventure
Trail is a network of fifteen
notable birding sites situated
on both sides of the US and
Canada border, in and
around the Turtle Mountain
region. The trail takes you
through North Dakota and
Southwestern Manitoba
providing beginner and avid
bird-watchers with plenty of
opportunity to experience
our beautiful and unique
prairie landscape.
Bird watchers can explore the detailed nature and wildlife of Whitewater
Lake. The lake’s shallowness and large size (6,070 hectares/15,000 acres
on average) as well as abundance and variety of vegetation combine to
make the region ideal grounds for the nesting and staging of more than
110 species of birds.
As a result of such biodiversity as well as its high concentrations of
waterfowl, shorebirds and Tundra Swans, Whitewater Lake has been
recognized as a Manitoba Wildlife Management Area, a Priority Bird
Habitat of Canadian Importance and designated an Important Bird Area.
Whitewater Lake is located 15 minutes west of Boissevain. For more

Whitewater Lake
Bird Festival
May 30 – June 1, 2014

Boissevain & Turtle Mountain with emphasis on
Whitewater Lake. Many of Manitoba’s over 300

hunting & fishing
The abundance of cropland and large
bodies of water provide spectacular
waterfowl hunting opportunities in the region.
Whitewater Lake, located just 15 minutes
west of Boissevain, is a globally significant
Important Bird Area (IBA). The Lake’s
shallowness and large size (6,070 hectares
/ 15,000 acres on average) as well as
abundance and variety of vegetation
combine to make the region ideal grounds
for the nesting and staging of more than 250
species of birds. During the fall migration, it
is estimated that as many as 190,000 snow
geese, 500,000 ducks, 23,000 shorebirds, and
up to 20,000 tundra swans visit the lake.
Turtle Mountain has some great fishing spots
which have produced master angler sized
fish for many years. Stocked waters at Bower
Lake and William Lake are popular for brown
trout, rainbow trout and smallmouth bass.
Adam Lake is good for pike.
20
Turtle Mountain Provincial Park is an oasis of
rolling forested hills and small lakes fifteen
minutes south of Boissevain. This park features
miles of mountain biking trails, canoe routes,
horse riding trails, self-guided hiking and
fitness trails, a large painted turtle population,
migrating waterfowl and a substantial moose
population.
Campgrounds with beaches, playgrounds and
picnic shelters are located at Adam, Max and
William Lakes. To book camping in the park go
to www.manitobaparks.com
Turtle Mountain Provincial Park
Turtle Mountain Provincial Park
Winter does not shut down the Provincial Park
– it just changes the focus. The park is home to
miles of groomed and ungroomed snowmobile
trails, which gives the rider a unique look at
winter life in the Turtle Mountain.
Exercise enthusiasts will enjoy the groomed
cross-country ski trails that encompass Lake
Adam. Four novice trails spread out from Adam
Lake, distance range from 4 km/2.5 miles
to 15km/9.3 miles. The James Lake Cabin is
available for overnight ski trips. The cabin can
be booked by contacting the park office at
204.534.2028.
Regardless of the activity, and regardless of the season,
you can make a trip to the Turtle Mountain ‑
truly nature’s playground.

International Peace Garden
For more than 70 years, The
International Peace Garden has
been an unique tribute to the
peace and friendship between the
people of Canada and the United
States of America. The garden
annually attracts a quarter million
visitors.
More than 150,000 flowers are
planted each summer in brilliant
and ever-changing displays.
970 hectares / 2, 399 acres of
beautiful forest surround the
garden. The park holds picturesque
picnic areas and fully modern
campgrounds, adventurous hiking
trails and winding bike paths.
Visit the Interpretive Centre and Botanical
Conservatory at the Peace Garden. The
conservatory reveals 40 years of a 6,000
specimen collection of succulents and
cacti. Africa is home to many of the over
one thousand plants displayed in the
3,000 sq. foot conservatory.
24
“To God in his Glory we two
nations dedicate this garden
and pledge ourselves that as
long as men shall live we
will not take up arms against
one another.”
Twisted girders, rescued from
the devastation of the World
Trade Center in New York, now
rest in the Garden, a symbol of
peace and democracy.
Etched in fossil embellished
Tyndall walls, the Peace Chapel
features quotes, from “People
of Peace”. Inside the chapel
lies a book of remembrance,
displaying the names of the
victims of the 9/11. A vivid
reminder of how we all must
work together for peace.
Every fifteen minutes the
lovely tones echo faintly from
the fourteen bells in the Carillon
Bell Tower. Flower potted
Peace Poles presented from
the Japanese Government are
inscribed, “May Peace Prevail”
in twenty-eight languages.
In the distance, the
majestic 120 foot Peace Tower,
symbolizing people coming from
the four corners of the world
to form two similar but distinct
nations, the United States and
Canada.
The International Peace
Garden is home to the
International Music Camp and
the Legion Athletic Camp. Near
the Wild Rose Campgrounds
is the Historic Doric Lodge, the
first main construction built in
1937 by American workers in the
Civilian Conservation Corps. The
lodge consists of spruce from
Duck Mountain northwest of
Dauphin, Manitoba and granite
from North Dakota. On the
sprawling front lawn, a gift from
the Fraternal Order of Eagles of
South and North Dakota and
Manitoba is a monolith inscribed
with the Ten Commandments.
Charlton Heston, an American
actor, playing Moses in the Ten
Commandment Hollywood
movie, attended the 1956
dedication.

live in Boissevain and the Turtle Mountain
region, think it’s the greatest place in
the world. Residents enjoy healthy small
town living, greeting each other on the
street and doing business with a smile and
handshake. Business people, families and
retirees continue to discover and pursue
the rural lifestyle of the area.
There are many possiblities for finding a place to
live in Boissevain. Whether you prefer the character of a historic house, a new home built on an
acreage, or an apartment, you’ll be pleased with
the choices available. Buyers will discover property
values more affordable for young families to build
their dream home, and because we are a small

The agriculture industry continues to be the cornerstone of the area’s economy, with oil production
expanding rapidly in the region. Boissevain also has
three large manufacturing companies: Goodon
Industries, Border Town Metal and Western Archrib.
Tourism, health care, education and the service
industry provide many other job opportunities.
If this is the kind of place you would like to
establish roots ... welcome home,
there is a place for you in Boissevian.
