Room Honor Initiative Launched
Through the generous contributions of our members, The Center Club is proud to announce the Room Honor Initiative which
recognizes prominent individuals who influenced our City. When you walk around the 15th floor, you’ll notice a number of rooms
now named in honor of these individuals. We graciously thank the following individuals and companies who provided support
to dedicate these rooms in honor of these exceptional influencers. Here is a glance at some of their accomplishments.
We encourage you to visit each room when you’re next in the Club.
BGE, an Exelon Company | Cecil E. Flamer, Morgan State Class of ‘69 | Brown Capital Management, Inc. | Johns Hopkins Medicine
Miles & Stockbridge, P.C. | The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company | University of Maryland School of Medicine
Willard Hackerman Business Center
Dr. John Beale Davidge Room
An accomplished engineer, builder, developer and
philanthropist, Willard Hackerman was the founder and
president of Whiting-Turner and a charter member of
The Center Club. This space will be renovated with the
latest technology for members to conduct business.
Dedicated by The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company.
Trained as a medical doctor in Scotland, Dr. John Davidge
set up practice in Baltimore and taught students from his
home. He successfully lobbied the Maryland legislature to
establish a medical college and was the founding dean of
the first public medical school in the United States at the
University of MD. This room was formerly known as Room 5.
Dedicated by University of Maryland School of Medicine.
Rembrandt Peale Reception
A famous portrait painter and Baltimore museum owner,
Rembrandt Peale had the idea of lighting his exhibits with
carbureted hydrogen gas which in turn led to its use for
street lamps …and the formation of the first gas utility in
North America. This area was formerly known as the 15th
floor lobby. Dedicated by BGE, an Exelon Company.
George Russell Jr. Room
A charter member of The Center Club, George Russell, Jr.
is a man of many firsts. The first African American…to sit on
the Supreme Bench in Baltimore, Circuit Court and Appellate
Courts in Maryland, City Solicitor for Baltimore and president
of the Maryland Bar Association. This room was formerly
known as Room 3. Dedicated by Brown Capital
Management, Inc.
Clarence Miles Founders Room
A lawyer by training, Clarence Miles became one of the most
influential men of his day and spent his life working on social
and civic issues to better Baltimore and Maryland. He was
one of the founders and first president of The Center Club.
This room was formerly known as Room 4 and the President’s
Room. Dedicated by Miles & Stockbridge, P.C.
2
Dr. Martin D. Jenkins Wine Room
A distinguished 20th century educator and scholar whose
pioneering research in educational psychology focused on
African-American children of superior intelligence, Dr. Martin
Jenkins served as Morgan State College’s 7th president and
was a charter member of The Center Club. This room was
formerly known as the Wine Room. Dedicated by
Cecil E. Flamer, Morgan State College Class of ’69.
Mary Elizabeth Garrett Room
A philanthropist and one of Johns Hopkins University’s
first trustees, Mary Elizabeth Garrett led a nationwide
fundraising campaign to establish its School of Medicine.
As the largest single contributor, her donation was given
with the stipulation that the medical school establish a
rigorous, unprecedented set of admission requirements,
and that women be accepted on the same terms as men.
This room was formerly known as the Federal Hill Room.
Dedicated by Johns Hopkins Medicine.
FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER
There’s something about September mornings that
takes me back to Loch Raven Boulevard. It’s like time
travel: I feel like the same kid getting ready for the
first day of school, just as the Orioles and Colts were
both in season for a glorious few weeks just down the
road on 33rd Street. We were all dressed up for a fresh
new start at Saint Matthew’s School, but our hearts
were at Memorial Stadium. Poor Sister Margaret Mary
never stood a chance.
It’s happening all over again, but even better, with a
stadium for each of our city’s grand teams. The “first
day of school” feeling still conveys a surge of energy that can power us (and the
teams we love) through the days and weeks ahead. And that spirit is definitely in
the air here at The Center Club, where most of us can get the clearest views of
where we’ve come from, appreciate what’s around us, and look forward to what’s
ahead.
So pull out your calendar, invite some friends, and come on up to the Club.
These are just a few of the things that many of us might rather have been doing
back on that first day of school!

Dues by Proposing
New Members
You, as a member of the Club, are the best link to a new
member. This is your Club and by sharing it with others along
with your personal knowledge of the benefits of being a
member, you make an enticing picture for others to consider
membership. Who do you like to spend time with that isn’t
currently a member? Do you have a colleague or friend that
could benefit from expanding their professional network?
Our new member referral program allows you to earn
Club Credits that can be used towards food & beverage,
events, IntraClubs, even annual dues.
As you know, membership gives access to our 5-Star Platinum
Club for dining, hosting events, attending Club events, joining
our IntraClubs or using our reciprocal clubs…and right now,
new members can enjoy all these benefits by joining with our
best promotion yet. They’ll pay a one-time reduced initiation
fee plus dues for 2017 (at 2016 rates) and we’ll waive dues for
the remainder of the year. Plus we’ll give them Club Credits
(see below) good for their first 6 months as a member.
To register a candidate for membership or for more
information, contact Nancy Sloane, Director of Membership
& Marketing at [email protected] or 667-217-3542.
The next Open House for Prospective Members is Tuesday,
September 13th from 5-7 PM.

AROUND THE CLUB
A Strategic Plan
Dear Members:
In an effort to improve the Club for today’s members and
prepare for the next generation, the Board of Governors has
authorized the formation of a Strategic Planning Committee
to study important issues that affect our Club operations.
The strategic planning process will be a comprehensive
analysis of the Club’s mission, vision, and long term goals.
The goal is to provide a strategic plan for the Club’s long term
approach to club facilities, finance, governance, management,
membership, communications, etc. with associated action
plans to measure our progress.
To facilitate this process, the Club has engaged Chambers
(www.chambersusa.com), a nationally recognized planning,
architecture, and design firm headquartered in Baltimore
with extensive experience performing similar exercises
with hundreds of private clubs around the globe.
We expect to develop the strategic plan throughout the
fall and winter. During the next several months, there will
be a number of opportunities for members to provide
input through surveys, focus groups, and other opportunities.
Your feedback will be an important element of the
planning process.
We have a very special Club. With a plan for the future, we
can be assured that as we move forward, we will be respectful
of the Club’s traditions while embracing the needs of our
current Members and preparing the Club for generations
to come.
Best regards,
David H. Nevins
Board President

The challenge is how to effectively manage internal and
external pressures without compromising our well-being.
Johns Hopkins Medicine psychiatrist Dr. Karen Swartz
discusses strategies to manage stress, minimize anxiety
and identify when symptoms may signal a more serious
underlying issue.
