During the New York festival, many of the questions raised in Pesaro will continue to be investigated: What is an ItalianAmerican film language? What are the elements of its style, its recurrent visual motifs, the poetics of its images? How does Italian-American cinema find its place among other hyphenated American cinema? What are its specific and shared themes? Please join us in exploring these topics with directors, actors, scholars, and film aficionados, and in viewing this series of fresh and revealing cinematic works. John D. Calandra Italian American Institute Queens College/CUNY 25 West 43rd Street, Suite 1700 New York, NY 10036 In September 2008, the Calandra Institute and the Pesaro Festival of New Cinema will present an updated version of the retrospective in New York City. The Calandra Institute will publish an English translation of Quei bravi ragazzi. Film scholar Giuliana Muscio of the University of Padua curated a selection of films made after the so-called “new Hollywood” generation of Italian-American filmmakers such as Michael Cimino, Francis Ford Coppola, Brian De Palma, and Martin Scorsese. In addition to feature films, the festival presented short films and documentaries. Scholars presented on Italian-American history, culture, and cinematic artistry during the conference component of the festival. A volume of critical essays addressing Italian-American cinema and its contribution to American cinema, Quei bravi ragazzi, edited by Muscio and Spagnoletti, was published in Italian by Marsilio Editori.
